Building the Times by Annie Leibovitz (Limited Ed.: images from the b&w billboard size photo/poster)

New York Times 2005 2006 - With b&w images from the very large size offset photograph/poster by Annie Leibovitz; photographs were taken between July 2005 and July 2006, and were displayed outside The New York Times Building construction site in Dec. 2005, titled: "Building the Times"; approximately 9 or 10 sets were printed from the total of 83 original b&w photographs that were displayed of various sizes; it is not signed; paper size: 63-1/2 x 48-1/2in; printed on a thick paper-cloth (washable); the images can easily be trimmed in several fashions and framed separately. Famed photographer Annie Leibovitz started documenting (around Dec.2005) the construction of the 52-story, Renzo Piano-designed steel and glass tower with hundreds of arresting images, 83 of which were displayed on the wooden walls constructed around the site on 8th Ave. between 40th & 41st St. on the pedestrian street-level. These walls were covered with 802 b&w photos of varying sizes (the original 83 images where duplicated around the wall), and arranged in a series of posters that stretch 164 ft across the entire block on the east side of 8th Ave. between W. 40th & 41st Sts, over 300 ft. down W.40th St. and nearly 450 ft. down 41st St. As the building was being completed in early 2007 these billboard posters where removed and are now in varying conditions being exposed to the out door elements. CONDITIONS: left & right white margins slightly trimmed; some smudges to all the white borders; some faint invisible dents- from the back side's dried glue- showing thru out the front image; also a little of the glue has browned on back; otherwise the front image in GOOD COND. How Opal Mehta Got Kissed, Got Wild, and Got a Life / Signed / ARC / Uncorrected Proof

New York: Little Brown & Company, 2006 New York: Little Brown & Company, 2006. Author-signed ARC and Uncorrected proof; First Edition, First Printing, so stated, but of course as ARC/proof this precedes the trade first edition. No ISBN yet at the time this was printed, but it would become 0316059889. Signed by the author on the second half-title page (in the case of the ARC, this is 2 pages after the title page). Also laid in is a COA from an autograph examiner, but Viswanathan's child-like hand is well-known here in any case. Cover design, though not credited in this ARC, by Marie Mundaca. Fine. Octavo, 312 pp. (two less pages than the later hardcover); fronted by a somewhat gushing introduction letter from Little Brown's Michael Pietsch, which presumably later was something of an embarrassment for him. A very rare signed Advance Review Copy and "proof made from author's manuscript" of Kaavya Viswanathan's controversial expedition into - was it plagiarism ? - of two of Megan McCafferty's neo-chick-lit novels. Passages in in the freshman Harvard prodigy's novel are so similar to parts of McCafferty's "Sloppy Firsts" and "Second Helpings." -in some cases, nearly verbatim- that intentional plagiarizing seemed to many to be beyond credibility, lending perhaps-undeserved credence to apologists' theories. Some of those were rather outre: the possibility that the plagiarism was unconscious, that she had been so pressured to succeed since birth by her success-fixated family that "borrowing" was a learned habit. A "Stepford Plagiarism" variation on that latter even posited that such borrowing is actually psychologically programmed in some children in those circumstances, to the degree that they don't even notice doing it, or at least don't perceive it as an unacceptable action. The reaction was, in fact, far more interesting than a genre book itself could possibly be. Some comparisons between Viswanathan's real-life behavior and that of her in-book doppelganger, Opal Mehta, even go so far as to imply that Viswanathan was, in fact, living her novel intentionally. There hadn't been time for much in the way of organized signing when the publicity hit and Little Brown pulled the title from dealer's shelves, hence - scarce. L64

The Sonnets of Shakespeare (Signed Limited Edition, 11 Signed Platinum Prints)

South Dennis, Massachusetts: 21st Editions , 2006. Limited Edition . Hardcover. Fine. In 2006, fine press photography book publisher 21st Editions released The Sonnets of Shakespeare. Limited to 65 copies worldwide, the hand-bound collection contains 11 original platinum prints (ten bound and one free-standing platinum print entitled, El Mundo, Suiza that is suitable for framing). Each print is initialed by Flor Guarduno with the free standing photograph signed in full on the rectro. This copy, 4 of 65, was presented to Lance Speer, 21st Editions Contributing Editor and Director of Marketing, upon completion of the project. Each signed and numbered copy of The Sonnets of Shakespeare is hand-bound and printed in on hand-made paper. Measuring 16 x 16 inches, this gorgeous handmade volume is bound in hand-made paper with a leather spine and along with the free-standing platinum print is housed in a custom clamshell box. The book is signed and numbered by Flor Garduno, John Wood (who wrote the introduction), and the publisher, Steven Albahari on the limitation page. A Letter of Provenance from Lance Speer is included. The book, clamshell case, and prints are in pristine condition. From the introduction by John Wood, \"Flor Garduño is most well-known for her intense, deeply moving images from Latin America and her elegant but erotic nudes. The most distinctive quality of her work is its genuine freshness. It is the mark of a great artist to be able to look at what we all know and have seen yet give us something new, something we have never seen before. To be able to do it with the nude and with native peoples, two of the most overworked and, therefore, most dif?cult subjects in photography, demonstrates not only genius but an inventiveness seldom encountered. Most photographers do not see through their own eyes but create work that looks like the work of other photographers. They may possess considerable technique and craft, but what is missing is a distinct style, a singular voice, an original vision. Seeing with one\'s own eyes is one of the most difficult tasks for any artist but especially the photographic artist because every photographer\'s head is filled with tens of thousands of photographs she or he has seen. The question is how one can see afresh in the midst of so much visual clutter - wonderful clutter, of course - Le Gray, Le Secq, Watkins, O\'Sullivan, Coburn, Kühn, Weston, Sudek, Hosoe, Witkin, and on and on - but clutter none-the-less. There is, of course, no easy way to discover or shape an original Vision. That is the gift no teacher can give.\"

The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream.

Crown, New York 2006 - First edition Octavo, original black boards with titles to the spine in gilt. Signed by Barack Obama using his full name; not just his usual initials. Fine in a fine dust jacket. The Audacity of Hope is Barack Obama's call for a new kind of politics—a politics that builds upon those shared understandings that pull us together as Americans. Lucid in his vision of America's place in the world, refreshingly candid about his family life and his time in the Senate, Obama here sets out his political convictions and inspires us to trust in the dogged optimism that has long defined us and that is our best hope going forward. The Chicago Tribune explained straightforwardly that it is a "political biography that concentrates on the senator's core values." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The master bookbinder for the twelve bound images was Mark Tomlinson, working with a design by Skolkin and Chickey. As previously stated, the master printmaker for the platinum prints was Stan Klimek of Stan Klimek Studios. The edition features 10 bound platinum prints by Eikoh Hosoe as well as a freestanding, signed platinum print, Man and Woman No. 24 (5.625 x 9 inches), signed in kanji in pencil on the lower right margin by Hosoe, and contained in a separate protective folder. The free standing print is suitable for framing. The book has been signed in pencil on the colophon page by Eikoh Hosoe, John Wood (editor), and Steven Albahari (publisher). As mentioned previously, each of the platinum prints is signed in kanji on the lower right margin by Eikoh Hosoe. This is the only book containing fully signed platinum prints. All other copies are only initialed. BAT is a French acronym for Bon a Tirer (good to pull) a term that is used in the time honored print making tradition. The BAT is created by the Master Printer through the proofing process in collaboration with the artist or estate. Once the artist is satisfied with the print he will sign on the print BAT with his signature or if there was an estate it will be blind stamped. Once all of the BATs are signed these BATs become the reference prints for the edition to match. When the printer is finished printing the edition, the BATs and the completed prints are sent to the artist whereupon the artist will examine each print and compare it to the BAT before signing. The BAT is unique in that it is the genesis of the limited edition through the discovery of the printmaking process with the artist/printer collaboration. There is only one BAT created and it is gifted to the printer from the artist as a time honored way of thanking the printer. Upon completion of the project, 21ST Editions publisher Steven Albahari presented the BAT to Stan Klimek. A Letter of Provenance from Stan Klimek is included with this edition as well as a letter from the publisher Steve Albahari to Stan Kilimek thanking him for his work on the project.

R.O.W. (Right of Way) A Consideration of the Right of Way Rules for Sailboats

San Francisco: Pacific Editions, 2006 San Francisco: Pacific Editions. 2006. One of 12 copies only, all on Rives BFK paper, each signed and numbered by Charles Hobson and Kay Bradner (who collaborated on the design of the linoleum block print). Page size: 18 inches x 9 inches when closed and folded into 8 leaves and when opened fully 7-1/2 feet. There is a title page and page of text and a colophon page as well as the 8-page folded print. Bound: blue cloth spine, coastal map over boards on covers with white label printed in black on front cover, housed in translucent plastic slipcase fastening with cleat and sailing line on foredge, fine. The central image of this book is a three foot square relief print that was created as part of a program at the San Francisco Center for the Book. It was original printed in 2005 by a steamroller at Carolina and 16th Streets, San Francisco. Kay Bradner cut the linoleum block and printed it; Charles Hobson designed the book and assembled it with the assistance of Alice Shaw. The print, at first glance, seems to show a pleasant Sunday afternoon of sailing on the San Francisco Bay. However, the position of the sailboats has been established to illustrate some of the most basic right of way rules. The rules themselves are actually embedded in the image in small window openings cut into the print. As usual with books from Pacific Editions, all is meticulously crafted, disparate elements aesthetically incorporated into a beautiful book. Both artists have a passion for the water and the vessels that move on it. Charles Hobson's extensive output has, as a base, the juxtaposition of word and image. He is a faculty member at the San Francisco Art Institute and at one time raced a Cal 20 sailboat on the San Francisco Bay where he had first hand experience with the application of the right of way rules. As with other books from Pacific Editions, this, too, must be experienced. Turning the pages, opening the "rules" windows, and reveling in the deep blue of the print brings a land-locked person as close to the water as is possible. See an Image.

        12 O'Clock News.

Verdigris Press [2006], [Octon, France] - One of 10 copies from a total edition of 50, all on Hahnemuhle paper, signed by the artist, Judith Rothchild and the printer / binder, Mark Lintott; this is one of 10 deluxe copies with an original copper plate and additional mezzotint, 40 regular copies also were made. In addition 20 suites of prints from the original copper plates were printed. Page size: 11-1/2 inches x 16-7/8 inches. Bound by Mark Lintott: original gray-green paper over boards, paper has been silk-screened with yellow moon and title printed in khaki green with exposed sewing in ivory linen thread, blood red cloth hinges, red paper spine with title printed in black with author and artist's name, blood red endpapers, housed in publisher's matching clamshell box, fine. Illustrated by Judith Rothchild and designed by Judith Rothchild and Mark Lintott, including three original mezzotints, pulled from three copper plates, two full page and the other copper plate cut into eight sections and each of the eight plates separately re-printed and inserted in the text corresponding to the indications given by the author. The text is set in Vendome Romain and was printed on an 1867 Albion press by Mark Lintott, who also made the bindings, slipcases and boxes. The date of publication, according to the artist and printer, was February 5, 2006, which was the third anniversary of Colin Powell's speech to the UN Security Council. Parts of that speech are printed in black on the blood red recto of the rear free endpaper. 12 O'CLOCK NEWS was originally published in GEOGRAPHY III in 1976. Elizabeth Bishop's prose poem, certainly surreal in outlook, with a great sense of irony as well as parody, takes a look at the author's desk top, but isolating images and viewing them as minutia. The results, as detailed in Bishop's "new report," could not be any more wrong. The parallel with the American Secretary of State's speech at the U.N. is devastatingly obvious. See an Image.
