THE ROAD - PUBLISHER'S TAPEBOUND GALLEY

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 2006. First Edition. About Fine, with just a trace of minimal edgewear to note. The earliest advance state of McCarthy's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, consisting of publisher's tapebound sheets for the nearly finished manuscript with handwritten notations reproduced throughout. Issued half a year prior to the novel's release (and well in advance of the proof copies in blue wrappers), a small number of these would have been produced - perhaps a dozen copies. Quite scarce, with minor textual variations from the finished novel.

The text is by Mohamed Ali Abdullah the architect on the project which won the Aga Khan Architectural Award for 2010; "The revitalisation project, a unique architectural revival of one of the most important heritage sites in Doha, was based on a thorough study of the history of the market and its buildings, and aimed to reverse the dilapidation of the historic structures and remove inappropriate alterations and additions. The architect attempted to rejuvenate the memory of the place: modern buildings were demolished; metal sheeting on roofs was replaced with traditionally built roofs of dangeal wood and bamboo with a binding layer of clay and straw, and traditional strategies to insulate the buildings against extreme heat were re-introduced" (AKAA website). Just 2 copies located of the English language edition on OCLC - BnF and the Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar - alongside 2 copies of the simultaneously issued French edition, BnF and Rhode Island College.

PETER BEARD: THE COLLECTORS' EDITION - NUMBERED AND SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER WITH THE SIGNED PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINT "965 ELEPHANTS

(BEARD, PETER). Beard, Peter & Owen Edwards. Nejma Beard & David Fahey, Editors. PETER BEARD: THE COLLECTORS' EDITION - NUMBERED AND SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER WITH THE SIGNED PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINT "965 ELEPHANTS". Signed and Numbered with a Photographic Print. Koln, GERMANY: Benedikt Taschen Verlag, 2006. First Edition 1/125 Deluxe. Elephant Folio. Full Leather, Boxed. Photography Monograph. As New/No Jacket - As Issued. np (616pp), profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Text in English, German and French. Art Direction and Design by Ruth Ansel. One of the most lavish books published to date on the work of a single photographer, Benedikt Taschen's sumptuous 2006 monograph on Peter Beard rivals Helmut Newton's "Sumo" in both scale and grandeur. "Photographer, collector, diarist, and writer of books Peter Beard has fashioned his life into a work of art; the illustrated diaries he kept from a young age evolved into a serious career as an artist and earned him a central position in the international art world. He was painted by Francis Bacon, painted on by Salvador Dali, and made diaries with Andy Warhol; he toured with Truman Capote and the Rolling Stones, created books with Jacqueline Onassis and Mick Jagger - all of whom are brought to life, literally and figuratively, in his work. As a fashion photographer, he took Vogue stars like Veruschka to Africa and brought new ones - most notably Iman - back to the U.S. with him. Spilling out over the pages of this massive tome, Peter Beard's collages are reproduced as a group for the first time at the size they have always meant to be seen, some as foldouts. Hundreds of smaller-scale works and diaries fill the remaining spreads - magnified to show every detail, from Beard's meticulous handwriting and old-master-inspired drawings to stones and bones and bits of animals pasted to the page. All color illustrations are color-separated and reproduced in Pan4C, the finest reproduction technique available today, which provides unequalled intensity and color range". This elephant folio sized book is bound in full leather over boards, housed in a velvet-lined shipping crate, and is accompanied by a wooden viewing stand that is reminiscent of an African headrest. Its companion volume: "PB2" contains an image index with captions for all the pictures reproduced in the main book, personal photos and early work of the artist, an interview with the artist by Steven M. L. Aronson, a facsimile reprint of Beard's 1993 handwritten essay from the sold-out first issue of "Blind Spot" magazine, an extensive bibliography, and an exhibition history. A pristine example of the Taschen Collectors' Edition limited to one hundred and twenty-five copies SIGNED AND NUMBERED by Peter Beard containing the SIGNED AND NUMBERED 20 x 16" Gelatin silver black and white photographic print "965 Elephants" unopened in the publisher's original printed shipping carton, as issued.         THE VIEW FROM CASTLE ROCK

Toronto, Canada: McClelland & Stewart, 2006. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. Toronto, Canada: McClelland & Stewart, 2006. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 360 pages. The author's twelfth collection of short stories. One of Alice Munro's greatest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Alice Munro's twelfth collection of short stories. It is one of her most beloved books, for "sentimental" reasons, justifiably so: Twelve is a Chekhovian achievement in terms of sheer quantity and quality, which are one and the same thing in Munro's case. Its publication prompted Munro to announce, prematurely, the end of her writing career, showing how with the greatest writers, fiction is profoundly intuitive, guided by impulse and dictated by the unconscious. Even if she did not know it at the time, she had two more (great) books to go. The back DJ flap sums up Munro's career and achievement by (almost diffidently) stating that "she has been mentioned as a potential winner of the Nobel Prize". Not anymore: "A stunningly precise writer who is often able to say more in 30 pages than an ordinary novelist is capable of in 300. Munro writes about what are usually called ordinary people, but her intelligence, compassion, and astonishing power of perception enable her to give their lives a remarkable dignity, indeed redemption, since she shows how much of The Extraordinary can fit into that jam-packed emptiness called The Ordinary" (Nobel Prize Citation). An absolute "must-have" title for Alice Munro collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in blue ink-pen on the title page by Alice Munro. She signed on top of the page, making her signature even more prominent. Throughout her long career, Munro made very few public appearances, and is a reluctant signer at best. As such, most of her books are signed on a bookplate, which are much less desirable than copies signed on either the title page or tipped-in page. This title is a classic. This is one of very few signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Its value will not only keep but increase over time. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2013. One of the greatest living writers. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ALICE MUNRO TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0771065264.

        The Surinam Album

The Folio Society, London 2006 - 87 p. Large volume unpaginated. One b&w frontispiece in the commentary volume. 91 tipped-in coloured plates. Extra copies of plates 7, 56 and 65 in an envelope at rear. Limited to 1000 copies. Large illustration volume is one quarter leather with paper boards. The Folio Society commissioned David Eccles to produce a cover design directly inspired by Merian's depiction of the hawk moth found in plate 38. Smaller volume is green cloth. In matching green case with a compartment for the smaller volume. Maria Sibylla Merian (1647 - 1717) was a naturalist and scientific illustrator who studied plants and insects and made detailed paintings about them. Her detailed observations and documentation of the metamorphosis of the butterfly make her a significant, albeit not well known, contributor to entomology. As one of the foremost botanical and naturalist artists of all time, Merian's achievements have been recognized with no fewer than six plants, nine butterflies and two beetles named after her. This Folio Society set contains 91 watercolour facsimiles from the Maria Sibylla Merian Collection in the British Museum, never before reproduced. Julie Harvey of the Entomology Library at the Natural History Museum has written a fascinating introduction to Merian's work, setting it in context and providing an overview of her life and times. A truly beautiful collection. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

PETER BEARD: THE COLLECTORS' EDITION - NUMBERED AND SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER WITH THE SIGNED PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINT "965 ELEPHANTS"

Benedikt Taschen Verlag, Koln, GERMANY 2006 - np (616pp), profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Le pompe funebri, overo Aminta, e Clori. Favola Silvestre.

In 4to (cm 18,5); cartonato posteriore; pp. (4) 160. «Cremonini's Pompe is otherwise marked by a spiritual and moral dimension conspicuously absent from [Tasso's] Aminta, though which had been hinted at obliquely in other plays under the veil of pagan mythology. The action of the Pompe is framed by a sacrifice and games in honor of the dead shepherd - lover, Dafni, whose shade recites the prologue, and it features a priest and a minister who note at length the necessity of religion in pastoral life. Even the satyr, Rustico, comments on the importance of piety. More unusually, philosophical and theological ideas are raised independently of the plot, such as the affirmation of the immortality of the soul and of Free Will. The introduction of such questions, and especially of moralizing and pious sententiae, became more noticeable in later pastoral drama, particularly after the publication of Guarini's Pastor fido» (L. Sampson, Pastoral Drama in Early Modern Italy. H.C. Kuhn, Venetianischer Aristotelismus im Ende der Aristotelischen Welt: Aspekte der Werke und des Denkens des Cesare Cremonini, Frankfurt a.M., 1996, passim).Edit16, CNCE13724.
