        The Memoirs of Benjamin Franklin

2006. FRANKLIN, Benjamin. The Memoirs of Benjamin Franklin. 188 pp. Illustrated with frontispiece portrait of the author. 8vo., bound in publisher's full brown morocco. Printed on all-cotton fiber English mouldmade paper. San Francisco: Arion Press, 2006. |~||~||~||~| Limited Edition of 400 copies produced to celebrate the tercentenary of Franklin's birth. While this work is commonly known to today's readers as the Autobiography, Franklin used the term Memoirs in reference to his own writing, hence the above title. It was printed using Aiken, a new digital typeface designed by Andrew Hoyem, Linnea Lundquist, and Andrew Crewdson. Aiken is based on what is believed to be the first American typeface, and is named after the Philadelphia printer Robert Aitken, known as the printer of the American Revolution, and his daughter, printer Jane Aitken. Unlike many recent editions of this work, Arion Press's version regularizes the spelling, capitalization, and punctuation, as Franklin would have expected of a printer of his time. The work is accompanied by a keepsake booklet that details the humorous bibliophilic mystery of the recovery of the lost original manuscript in Paris, 1867. As new.

At Seventy from The Bonnet Series

Durango, Colorado:: Mary Ellen Long ,, 2006.. One-of-a-Kind. Antique bonnet with hand-embroidered of flowers, plus pink ribbons and a pink satin rose. Eight miniature books, attached to the bonnet by thread and ribbon, constructed with various papers, including handmade papers and paper doilies. Books, sized from 1.5 x 1.5" to 1.75 x 2", employ handsewn pamphlet and stab bindings using thread and ribbons. Bonnet and attached books laid in cardboard box for storage. Mary Ellen Long, The Bonnet Series: "This series began when I discovered a cache of antique bonnets in my mother's cedar chest. I will assume that the bonnets were hers and mine as babies. The first bonnet in this series, Childhood Songs and Rhymes symbolized the beginning of my journey through life. The bonnets … speak of the aging process and have become vehicles for memory and story. The miniature books that trail down these bonnets hold remembrances of times past as in Decades - each book dedicated to the decades of my life so far (some of the last books empty awaiting my reviews as I age through my remaining decades!). ..." These miniature books in At Seventy contain quotations from poet, novelist, and memoirist May Sarton.

Svet Publishing House [2006] - ISBN: 80-902986-7-2. A bibliophile edition (in a print run of 300 numbered copies) of the working album with small contact photographs, which assembled Frantisek Drtikol (1883-1961) himself . The album consists of eighty-three pages with 973 photographs, Drtikol's notes and twenty pencil sketches of photographic compositions. Original is in deposit of Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague, it is donation from Anna Farova. The format of the publication is identical to that of the original. Drtikol's notes, made in ordinary and red pencil, are preserved with unchanged charm and elegance.         Building the Times by Annie Leibovitz (Limited Ed.: 4 b&w images from the very large size photo/posters)

New York Times 2005 2006 - With 4 different b&w images from the very large size offset photograph/poster by Annie Leibovitz; photographs were taken between July 2005 and July 2006, and were displayed outside The New York Times Building construction site in Dec. 2005, titled: "Building the Times"; approximately 9 or 10 sets were printed from the total of 83 original b&w photographs that were displayed of various sizes; it is not signed; paper size: 48 x 32in, each image size: 22-1/2 x 14-1/2in; printed on a thick paper-cloth (washable). Famed photographer Annie Leibovitz started documenting (around Dec.2005) the construction of the 52-story, Renzo Piano-designed steel and glass tower with hundreds of arresting images, 83 of which were displayed on the wooden walls constructed around the site on 8th Ave. between 40th & 41st St. on the pedestrian street-level. These walls were covered with 802 b&w photos of varying sizes (the original 83 images where duplicated around the wall), and arranged in a series of posters that stretch 164 ft across the entire block on the east side of 8th Ave. between W. 40th & 41st Sts, over 300 ft. down W.40th St. and nearly 450 ft. down 41st St. As the building was being completed in early 2007 these billboard posters where removed and are now in varying conditions being exposed to the out door elements. CONDITIONS: lots of creases to the borders especially at top right, some creases thru out the images; with dried glue marks on back; also tiny faint invisible dents from the back side's dried glue showing thru out the front image and some of them have turned a little rusty brown but not distracting from it, otherwise in GOOD COND.         Original Painting of Dejah Thoris (Edgar Rice Burroughs' 'Princess of Mars' heroine) By Butch Burcham

No Location: Burcham, F. Newton ("Butch"), 2006 Large, original, ink on heavy art paper ("board") by Butch Burcham. Full color. Subject is Dejah Thoris, Edgar Rice Burroughs' Princess of Mars, who appeared most saliently in five Burroughs novels as the love interest of John Carter. Dejah is looking very fetching indeed in this detailed interpretation, clad in...not a whole lot, lounging and preening on a Martian boulder, giant mushrooms in the foreground, a Martian temple in the distance. Though intended, of course, as an erotically appealing Burcham Good Girl, she has here been given something of a nice royal look by Burcham as well: rather a cross among Katherine Hepburn, Serena Williams and Vampirella. Which is something one doesn't encounter every day. See scan. 22" x 14" , unframed, fine. Signed and dated in 2006 left of image. F. Newton "Butch" Burcham has lengthy credits in comic book and computer game illustration. He is listed at ERBzine as a Burroughs illustrator for his contributions to the body of published Tarzan illustration, and was interior artist for Pinnacle's vidgame titles "Monsters, Muties and Misfits" (1999) and "Horrors of the Wasted West" (2002), as well as "Conan and the Queen of the Black Coast" (1989). Among his comic credits are "Godzilla, King of the Monsters" (Trendmasters, 1994) and the Harlan Ellison comic book "Cameos" (Dark Wolf #2), various issues of Roleplayer magazine, and many others.         Fading Gardens

Dallas, Texas:: A Bee Press,, 2006-2009.. One-of-a-Kind. 51" x 74" five accordion books (8 pages each) laid open, overlapping to form a quilt. Materials: handmade paper (cotton, sugarcane, fig, kozo), plant inclusions (herbs, flowers), rayon paper, cotton printmaking paper, graphite, inkjet transfer, marker. Printing: inkjet transfer and handwriting. Signed by the artist. Alisa Banks: "Fading Gardens features plant material gathered from five family gardens. The delicacy of the paper corresponds to the time of year in which the plants were gathered - a time of the season's waning and fading gardens. "Fading Gardens is constructed from plant material gathered from five family gardens from three states. Each page features plants from a single garden. Some of the plants were pulped with the paper (cotton or kozo for strength), and some were laminated deeply or lightly within the sheets. The resulting paper was very fragile and was sandwiched between thin rayon paper (which lends an encaustic effect) and backed with printmaking paper to stabilize it. The stories are from five generations of gardeners. "Fading Gardens represents the passage of time (ancestral and natural). The form consists of 5 accordion books that overlap to suggest a quilt. Quilting was once a common family activity that has faded in successive generations just as the individual stories from those generations has also faded. The plants and stories are partially obscured just as memories fade with the passing of time.

Typeface is Hofler & Frere Jones?'s Requiem. One continuous line drawing weaves its way throughout the book printed silkscreen. Twenty photographic portraits of the interviewees printed offset. Ebony and figured maple front and back cover boards, inset with pearl dots and a wood purfling strip. Of 216 pages, 180 are printed. Designed and printed by Kate Ferrucci. Soundings" is based on interviews that were conducted, transcribed, and edited by the author from September 2003 to November 2005 in Bloomington, Indiana. The text includes a foreword by Jim Manion, program and music director of community radio station WFHB, and a preface by the author. Kate Ferrucci: "Bloomington, Indiana, is a university town and cultural mecca of 60,000. Not only is the town home to the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music—one of the most renowned institutions for the study of music in the world—but also the town itself is a nexus of musical activity, brimming with exceptionally talented local musicians. This book presents a collection oral history stories from the lives of twenty individuals who have been key figures in Bloomington?'s musical community over the past several decades, including Joshua Bell, David N. Baker Jr., Alain Barker, Cary Boyce, Reverend Marvin Chandler, Al Cobine, Malcolm Dalglish, Lloyd ?"TJ?" Jones, Ron Kadish, Grey Larsen, Freda Love, Paul M.K.S. Mahern, Carrie Newcomer, Karl Schuessler, Janis Stockhouse, Chris Swanson, Carmen Téllez, Camilla Williams, Lee Williams, and Mimi Zweig. ?"In this collection of stories, the narrators remark upon music in Bloomington past and present. They share their personal feelings about their art, their thoughts on the creative process, and their path into music. Their stories are full of wisdom and tradition. These people have a sense of independence and a do-it-yourself spirit that can be likened to that of the 1920s when Hoagy Carmichael took the initiative to host jazz dances on the north side of the courthouse square. The portraits and supplementary photographs capture the sense of place and humble spirit which underlie the text. The book is a tribute to the people involved in this rich musical community, and represents the wide range of musical genres that are present.

San Francisco, California:: Califrisco Press,, 2006.. Edition of 37: 25 numbered, 12 lettered.. 11.75 x 18.5"; 17 leaves unnumbered interleaved with clear overlay pages. 14 Interleaved plates. Printed using K3 pigment inks on alfa cellulose paper. Bound with Chicago screws, masonite covers, aluminum hinges, and archival papers. Sharon Mizota, "A World of Hurt" (introduction): "... This series of photo collages appropriates images from a variety of sources without regard for context or attribution. It freely mixes images of torture, murder, and mutilation with portraits of some of the most powerful and influential men in world history. However, Lisdebertus intends not to obscure the lines of responsibility, but to call for greater accountability. He employs a blunt visual language to postulate the links between unspeakable acts of violence and the high-ranking perpetrators who often get away with them."Through their distinctive visual alchemy, the collages tell buried stories, outline hidden connections, and make scandalous accusations. Although the juxtapositions may feel jarring and random, they generate new meanings, pushing viewers to make their own associations. Lisdebertus's cut and paste approach may seem brash, but its boldness is entirely strategic. The works decisively level historic and academic hierarchies, and cut through the official accounts, circumlocutions, and justifications that lull us into accepting brutality as a necessary part of everyday life. They remind us, forcefully, that violence is inexcusable, and that someone is always responsible.
