All of the magazine's most glorious moments are in this extravaganza of Playboy nostalgia" (Benedikt Taschen). An absolute "must-have" title for Playboy Magazine and erotica collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the title page by Hugh Hefner. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page or bookplate, as many Playboy books are. Now reclusive, Hugh Hefner launched the book at the Taschen Store Beverly Hills, a rare and one-time-only appearance for the book, during which his signature was obtained. This title is a modern erotica classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 1500 photographic plates and hundreds of illustrations. One of the most influential editor/publishers and popular icons of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. . ISBN 3822839760.

THEN & NOW: HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD, 1973-2004

Gottingen, Germany: Gerhard Steidl Druckerei Und Verlag, 2005. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. Gottingen, Germany: Gerhard Steidl Druckerei Und Verlag, 2005. Hardcover. Fine/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 148 pages. Artist Book. One of the most important art and photography books of our time. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a hardcover original only. The edition is now very scarce. A brilliant production by Ed Ruscha and Gerhard Steidl: Oversize-volume format. As if to make a statement about the "weight" of time's passage, it is a huge book that weighs 7 pounds. Cream cloth boards with titles embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Art by Ed Ruscha. There is no text. Cardboard slipcase with black titles on one side. Printed on thick coated stock paper in Gottingen, Germany to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents one of Ed Ruscha's most stunning Artist Books ever, well worth the 27-year wait. In July, 1973, Ruscha, "loading a continuous strip of 30 feet of Ilford FP-4 black-and-white film into his Nikon F2 and then mounting it on a tripod in the bed of a pickup truck", drove back and forth across the 12 miles of street, shooting both the North and South sides of its entire length. The negatives were developed and the materials placed in storage. Thirty years later, in 2003, a digital record of Hollywood Boulevard was created and it served as a reference guide for a film documentary in 2004. The resulting materials of both shoots have been scanned and digitally composed into four panoramics of the complete twelve miles. The original 1973 North side view is shown along the top of the page and juxtaposed with its 2004 version. The panoramics face each other and they are aligned" (Publisher's blurb). While the sheer size of this book departs from his small, cheaply produced, and now-iconic Artist Books, it remains a continuation of Ruscha's Artist Book aesthetics simply because his whole art is deeply rooted in graphic design. His genuine understanding of and fondness for the singular gaudiness of American culture is also self-evident. "Good art should elicit a response of 'Huh? Wow! ' as opposed to 'Wow! Huh? ' " (Ed Ruscha). When one sees Ed Ruscha's "Then & Now", the response after "Huh?" can only be "Wow!" . An absolute "must-have" title for Ed Ruscha collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen on the front free endpaper by Ed Ruscha. Ruscha's signature on this copy is one of the most beautiful we have ever seen. This title is a contemporary art and photography classic. This is one of very few signed copies still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 4500 black-and-white and 13000 color plates. Four of Ed Ruscha's Artist Books were selected as among the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest living artists. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ED RUSCHA TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 3865211054.

        The Lost Journals of Sacajewea

Berkeley, CA: Editions Koch, 2010. Limited Edition. Leather Bound. Fine. Tight, bright, and unmarred. Full limp leather binding. 4to. 80pp. Illus. Numbered limited edition, this being 30 of 65 copies. The Lost Journals of Sacajewea began as a project during the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark expedition. In the Spring of 2005, the Missoula Museum of Art had two exhibitions running simultaneously that were critical responses to the celebratory afflatus that customarily surrounds such events. I was at the museum to open my exhibition Nature Morte when I saw, hanging in the next gallery, a fragment of a poem that accompanied Native Perspectives on the Trail: A Contemporary American Indian Portfolio. I was introduced to the author, Debra Magpie Earling, and based on that fragment, I proposed a collaboration. Over the next few years we met occasionally and worked sporadically on the concept while we each pursued our own busy and demanding schedules. By 2006 Debra had completed the writing, and in 2009 I collected the last photographs that I wished to accompany the text. Printing began in late 2009 and was completed in January 2010.& & Debra is a member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of the Flathead Reservation. She has been published in journals and anthologies and her novel Perma Red received the American Book Award, the Mountains and Plains Bookseller Association Award, and a Spur Award. She received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2008. [Artist Statement]& & The typeface is a version of the historic Fell types presumed to be the work of Dutch punchcutter Dirck Voskens and interpreted by Jonathan Hoefler in a conscious attempt to reproduce the imperfect image that the Fell types left on paper when printed in the 18th Century. The Fell types have been described as “retaining a retrogressive old-style irregularity” which somehow seems appropriate given our purpose here in this book.& & The text is printed on Twinrocker Da Vinci hand-made paper at Peter Koch Printers and bound at the press by Jonathan Gerken. The smoked buffalo rawhide cover paper was designed and hand-made by Amanda Degener especially for this edition at Cave Papers in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The spine is beaded with trade beads and small caliber cartridge cases. The images were prepared by Donald Farnsworth at Magnolia Editions and printed on Kozo hand-made paper with the assistance of Jonathan Gerken and Tallulah Terryll.

Bolivianos 1900-1963 (1968), p. 37; not in KVK & WorldCat; Medina; Palau. An extremely rare "Novena" prayer book perhaps first compiled in 1714, when the city of La Paz in Bolivia (after surviving an earthquake) made Christ its patron and erected an image under the name "Señor de las Piedades". After a preliminary note on the events of 1714 (pp. 3-4) the book gives orations and prayers for each of the nine days of the Novena. We have located neither another copy of the present Argentine edition nor an earlier edition of the same text, but the title-page indicates that an earlier edition existed. The prayers for the nine days are followed by a closing note with additional prayers, which includes a reference to another book: Juan Gabriel de Contreras, Despertador eucarístico, Madrid, 1786, which is known in the literature. The italic type used for the preliminary note and a few headings was cut by Antonio Espinosa in Madrid, famous for the (slightly different) italic he made for Ibarra's 1772 Salust. Updike, Printing types, figs. 242 and 243, shows italics matching the present one in style but in a larger and smaller size in Espinosa's 1771 type specimen, noting (p. 81) the "extraordinary quality of pen-work. . they are among the most thoroughly calligraphic characters to be found in any existing specimen". The use of this type in Argentina 28 years later is noteworthy.

(KAWADA, KIKUJI). Kawada, Kikuji. KIKUJI KAWADA: THE MAP (CHIZU). Tucson, AZ & Tokyo: Nazraeli Press & Getsuyosha Ltd., 2005. First Edition Thus 1/500. 8vo. Cloth in Pictorial Slipcase. Photography Monograph. As New/No Jacket - As Issued. np, profusely illustrated in b&w. Text in Japanese and English. With a chronology. "Originally published on August 6, 1965 - the twentieth anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima - Kikuji Kawada's "The Map (Chizu)" is a true icon in the history of photographic publishing. Its status as the "ultimate photobook-as-object", coupled with its scarcity, combined to make it one of the most famous and sought-after photographic publications in existence. "The Map" combines powerful graphic design with a masterful photographic narrative exploring recent Japanese history - its imperialist past, western-influenced popular culture, and brutally violent clash with the United States. The photographs, many visible only with the opening of the multiple double-page gatefolds, capture on high-contrast film scenes of places and objects seared with the memory of horrific wartime events, from the atomic-bomb dome in Hiroshima to a trampled Japanese flag. Nazraeli Press in association with Getsuyosha Ltd. is proud to announce a facsimile reprint of this historic book. This edition is limited to only five hundred copies for distribution in the United States and Europe. Each copy is hand-numbered and signed by the artist, who also oversaw production of the project". A pristine copy of the 2005 NUMBERED AND SIGNED Nazraeli Press edition (whose 1965 Bijutsu Shuppan-sha first edition is cited on pages 286-287 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume I" and pages 212-213 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book") still in the publisher's shrinkwrap. The original pages were created by cutting the text from a 1st edition of Young's poem and mounting that text in a panel in the centre of each painting. The cost of the project, and poor sales meant that only 43 of Blake's designs were ever engraved, with almost 500 of the images remaining unpublished. These unpublished pages remained in the hands of private collectors until 1929 when they were dontated to the British Museum. This Folio Society edition is the only time all 537 of Blakes images have been published together and in colour. , Folio 13" - 23" tall, [548] & xx + 362 pp .

        CHIZU ("THE MAP")

Tokyo, Japan: Getsuyosha/Nazraeli Press, 2005. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. Tokyo, Japan: Getsuyosha/Nazraeli Press, 2005. Hardcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. Unpaginated. 40th-Anniversary Edition of the artist/photographer's masterpiece. One of the greatest Artist Books of the 20th century. Limited Slipcased Edition of 500 numbered and signed copies. Published simultaneously but should not be confused with the Japanese Edition of 1000 copies. Both editions are now rare. A stunningly beautiful new production by Kikuji Kawada: Regular-sized volume format. Black cloth boards with metallic-black titles embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Kikuji Kawada. Pamphlet laid into the slipcase. Pictorial hard board slipcase. Printed using digital-reproduction technology by Kawada himself, who considers the results superior to the 1965 Edition: The plates "have a tonal clarity, warmth, and richness that offset lithography in the 1960's could not produce". In publisher's original shrinkwrap. Without DJ, as issued. Presents "Chizu", "the ultimate photobook-as-object", in a definitive new realization. Originally published on August 6, 1965 to commemorate the bombing of Hiroshima, the guiding idea of Kikuji Kawada's memorial is archaeological layering. Using multi-panel foldouts, the "various layers inside peel away like archeological strata. The whole process becomes one of uncovering and contemplating the ramifications of recent Japanese history. Kawada's photographs are a masterly amalgam of abstraction and realism, of the specific and the ineffable, woven into a tapestry that makes the act of reading them a process of re-creation in itself. In the central metaphor of the map, in the idea of the map as a series of interlocking trace marks, Kawada has conjured a brilliant simile for the photograph itself: Scientific record, memory trace, cultural repository, puzzle, and guide" (Martin Parr and Gerry Badger). An absolute "must-have" title for Kikuji Kawada collectors. This copy is one of the Nazraeli Press Limited Slipcased Edition, labelled as such on the slipcase's spine ("NZ") in order to distinguish it from the twice-as-many Japanese Edition of 1000 copies, and indicated as such on the Limitation Page. It is very prominently and beautifully numbered and signed in black ink-pen, kanji style, by Kikuji Kawada. This edition marks the very first time the title has been reissued, mainly in response to the fact that the very few surviving copies of the 1965 First Edition are in fragile, decaying condition yet easily command between $20, 000 and $30, 000. It is highly collectible in its own right. This is one of very few copies of the Limited Slipcased Edition still available online, is still in the publisher's original shrinkwrap, and has absolutely no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 49 plates, 23 foldouts. "Chizu" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest artist/photographers of the 20th century. A flawless collectible copy. . ISBN 4901477161.
