ALEXANDER ANDERSON (1775 - 1870) WOOD ENGRAVER AND ILLUSTRATOR AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY

[New Castle & Worcester]: Oak Knoll Press / American Antiquarian Society, 2005.. Three volumes. Quarto. Heavily illustrated. Custom bound by hand by Gray Parrot in handsome quarter green morocco with marbled paper side-panels and morocco fore-edges, spines gilt extra, with contrasting gilt morocco labels. The whole enclosed in a matching green cloth covered clamshell box, with gilt morocco labels. First edition. This special binding is not an edition binding, but was commissioned specifically by the original owner of the set. "This three volume, comprehensive bibliography focuses on the important American wood engraver, Alexander Anderson; 1775-1870. The author has selected over 1,000 of Anderson's engravings to illustrate this major bibliography. This work begins with a well written and researched biography on Anderson's life. There are over 2,322 entries. Alexander Anderson was recognized by the first decades of the nineteenth century as this country's preeminent illustrator. Called the father of wood engraving in America and one of the masters of American Wood engraving, his prodigious work filled publications of every kind, separate prints, almanacs, fiction, travel, children's books, poetry, Bibles, religious tracts, medical texts, and broadsides. He is noted for his warm and often slyly humorous depictions of children in the large total of juvenile publications that he illustrated. The huge expansion of wood engravers and illustration that followed Anderson owed a debt to his skill and universally acclaimed artistic sense. He set a standard for successors who worked in the medium he had introduced. This study names and analyzes the publications where Anderson's work can be found. There are three indexes provided, one for authors and titles, a second for printers, publishers and booksellers, and a third for artists and engravers. Libraries, museums, book collectors and dealers, and all those interested in graphic arts will be able to identify Anderson's work and add to the history of American nineteenth-century book illustration. No understanding of American illustration is complete without an examination of Anderson's appealing and masterly engravings" - Publisher's blurb. Shipping significantly extra.

        Homage Braccelli

Boston. 2005. Artist's book, one of 10 copies, each signed and numbered in pencil by the artist, Laura Davidson, on the colophon. Page size: 6-13/16 inches x 5- 7/16 inches; 10pp. + frontis woodcut and colophon as endpapers. There are two pages pop-up prints, and 4 other pages of original prints. Bound by the artist: black cloth with title inset on front panel on cream stock printed in gray, fine. The artist states in the colophon that she intends this book to be a tribute to Giovanni Braccelli, who in 1624 in Livorno, created a series of etchings in a book called BIZZARIE DI VARIE FIGURE. She examined one of the two surviving copies at the Library of Congress, and the playful, acrobatic and quite modern figures of Braccelli stayed with her. She has reinterpreted them here as pop-up elements made from original prints accomplished in gray ink, the first two with the added elements of copper links and white string.
See an Image.
General Statutes of New Jersey [With] Table of Statutes

2005. [New Jersey]. [Vroom, Garret D.W., and William M. Lanning, Compilers]. General Statutes of New Jersey. Published Under the Authority of the Legislature, by Virtue of an Act Approved April 4, 1894, and a Supplement Thereto, Approved March 20, 1895. Jersey City: Frederick D. Linn & Co., 1896. [With] Luce, Edward J., Compiler. Table of Statutes Included in The General Statutes of New Jersey 1703-1895. Newark: Soney & Sage, 1900. With a new introduction and new table of contents by Paul Axel-Lute, Collection Development Librarian, Rutgers School of Law Library, Newark. Three volumes. xii, lxxvi, 4098 pp. Reprinted 2005 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. ISBN-13: 9781584776734. ISBN-10: 1584776730. Cloth. * This compilation succeeded the previous edition of 1877. Two-and-a-half times the size of its predecessor, it records the greatest increase in public general legislation between any two consecutive compilations in New Jersey's history. Its bulk pays witness to the state's rapid growth during the nineteenth century and its engagement with the forces of modernity. Such topics as "Usury" and "Militia" in 1877 are redefined as "Interest" and "National Guard"; new additions include laws dealing with labor arbitration, civil rights and occupational safety. Luce's Table of Statutes, an invaluable tool originally published separately in 1900, is included in Volume I. Our reprint also has a detailed table of contents, a feature that was not included in the original work.

        The Lost Journals of Sacajewea

Berkeley, CA: Editions Koch, 2010. Limited Edition. Leather Bound. Fine. Tight, bright, and unmarred. Full limp leather binding. 4to. 80pp. Illus. Numbered limited edition, this being 30 of 65 copies. The Lost Journals of Sacajewea began as a project during the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark expedition. In the Spring of 2005, the Missoula Museum of Art had two exhibitions running simultaneously that were critical responses to the celebratory afflatus that customarily surrounds such events. I was at the museum to open my exhibition Nature Morte when I saw, hanging in the next gallery, a fragment of a poem that accompanied Native Perspectives on the Trail: A Contemporary American Indian Portfolio. I was introduced to the author, Debra Magpie Earling, and based on that fragment, I proposed a collaboration. Over the next few years we met occasionally and worked sporadically on the concept while we each pursued our own busy and demanding schedules. By 2006 Debra had completed the writing, and in 2009 I collected the last photographs that I wished to accompany the text. Printing began in late 2009 and was completed in January 2010. Debra is a member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of the Flathead Reservation. She has been published in journals and anthologies and her novel Perma Red received the American Book Award, the Mountains and Plains Bookseller Association Award, and a Spur Award. She received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2008. [Artist Statement] The typeface is a version of the historic Fell types presumed to be the work of Dutch punchcutter Dirck Voskens and interpreted by Jonathan Hoefler in a conscious attempt to reproduce the imperfect image that the Fell types left on paper when printed in the 18th Century. The Fell types have been described as “retaining a retrogressive old-style irregularity” which somehow seems appropriate given our purpose here in this book. The text is printed on Twinrocker Da Vinci hand-made paper at Peter Koch Printers and bound at the press by Jonathan Gerken. The smoked buffalo rawhide cover paper was designed and hand-made by Amanda Degener especially for this edition at Cave Papers in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The spine is beaded with trade beads and small caliber cartridge cases. The images were prepared by Donald Farnsworth at Magnolia Editions and printed on Kozo hand-made paper with the assistance of Jonathan Gerken and Tallulah Terryll.

        NEW WORLD SUITE NUMBER THREE

Center for Book Arts (New York: Center for Book Arts. 2005). 17" x 17", four 8.5 x 11 books, black cloth with paper label. three 28 pages, one at 20 pages.. Edition limited to 75 signed and numbered copies, including five artist proofs, with only 25 copies for sale. This innovative interdisciplinary work intersects at the pinnacle of creative writing, graphic design, book art, and performance. This is a poem for three voices, meant to be read by three people at once. In addition to the poem, the author has written an afterword articulating the evolution of his polyphonic poetry, documenting for the reader a history of this definitive edition. The work is made to be performed, and his essay concludes, "The printed text should be as fine as it can be, but it should never be the final incarnation. A book must be a place where things begin." The display type was set by hand, and the text was printed by the Center's Master Printer, Barbara Henry at their Jane Mead Timken Printshop in three separate colors in Monotype Dante by, with composition by the Bixler Foundry in Skaneateles, NY.The text was then hand word and line spaced at the Center by Ms. Henry to Robert Bringhurst's exacting specifications. Mr. Bringhurst created the typographic design for the book, as well as the text. Hedi Kyle designed the innovative binding structure specifically for New World Suite Number Three. When opened, each volume within the book forms its own lectern. The poetry for each voice has been bound in heavy blue cardstock, while the afterword was done in burnt orange. When closed, the book has a stunning three dimensional architectural presence. It was produced at the Center for Book Arts under the supervision of Master Binder, Mirah von Wicht, who studied traditional bookbinding in Germany, book conservation in the USA, and worked at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and by artists Jennifer Bantz Biddle, Ana Cordeiro, Nancy Loeber and Linda Trimbath. .
