Autograph musical manuscript of "Say Thou Dost Love Me. Sonnets from the Portuguese XXI," a work for unaccompanied voices (soprano, alto, tenor and bass), signed and dated Ithaca, 21 January 2012. [Subtitle]: Written "For the 25th anniversary of The New York Virtuoso Singers, Harold Rosenbaum, Artistic Director" and dedicated to Mimi Stillman

6 ff. Large oblong folio (375 x 292 mm.). Notated in pencil on one side of each leaf only on 14-stave Carta No. 25 music manuscript paper. With text by Elizabeth Barrett Browning commencing "Say over, say over, say over again, and yet once over again, that thou dost love me." . Stucky, a major figure on the contemporary American music scene, is one of the most highly regarded and frequently performed living composers. He won a Pulitzer Prize for his Second Concerto for Orchestra in 2005 and has written commissioned works for many of the major American orchestras. Long associated with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, where he was resident composer from 1988-2009, Stucky studied with Karel Husa at Cornell and has been a professor of composition there since 1980. & & "Stucky's style combines rigorous compositional techniques with direct, eloquent expression. This mixture results in colourful, variegated and attractive musical structures that exhibit clear formal patterns and carefully organized pitch arrangements. The influence of Bartók and Lutoslawski lends an Eastern European character to works such as Voyages (1984) and the Double Concerto (1985). Several other works (Boston Fancies, 1985; Concerto for Orchestra, 1986–7; Son et lumière, 1988) refer to Stravinsky in their juxtaposition of blocks of material. In later works, Stucky’s harmonic language develops from atonal aggregates like those of Berio and Lutoslawski towards harmonic complexes that allude to triadic structures." James P. Cassaro in Grove online & & Browning (1806-1861) was one of the most prominent poets of the Victorian era. Her acclaimed "Sonnets from the Portuguese," a collection of 44 love sonnets written just prior to her marriage to Robert Browning in 1846, were first published in 1850.

Mayflies of the Driftless Region [Deluxe Edition]

Stockholm, WI: Midnight Paper Sales, 2005. Hard Cover. Fine. Hard Cover. Number 8 of 50 copies of the deluxe edition, signed by the author. There were also 300 copies issued in the standard edition and 50 copies issued unbound. Includes thirteen entomological identifications of mayfly specimens. For three years fly fisherman (and artist) Gaylord Schanilec became entranced by the mayflies he found fluttering about his favorite fishing spots lining the Mississippi River. He collected countless specimens, which he examined under his microscope and sent to entomologist Clarke Garry for identification. According to the author "to be included in this book, a mayfly had to be of importance to fly fishers - and I also had to catch one." Each specimen is illustrated with a color wood engraving and described with a scientific and at times poetic set of key characteristics. This deluxe edition is housed in a slipcase with a glass window at the top revealing eight fly fishing flies hand tied by David Lucca. The book is accompanied by a portfolio which contains seven proof sheets and an extra suite of the 13 engravings, each titled and signed. It is bound in full brown leather with a gilt fly on the spine, and the portfolio is bound with leather spine and green paper boards. The wood engravings in the book are printed on Gampi Torinoko paper. The type was composed by hand in Bembo Monotype. The slipcase is edged in matching leather with panels covered in green paper; the glass window is held into place with wood and the base is also wood. Winner of a Judges Choice Award at the 2005 Oxford Fine Press Bookfair and of the Carl Hertzog Award for ‘excellence in book design';. The vast majority of the 50 deluxe copies have entered institutional collections, with what appears to be fewer than 20 copies in private collections. 88 pages. & We are offering this set with an additional suite of progressive proofs which are housed in a blue cloth slipcase. Number 12 of 13 copies, signed by the illustrator. The proofs show the separate layers of color that were printed on top of each other to form each finished illustration. Progressive proofs for all 13 illustrations are included. [Approximately 50 loose sheets.].

        The Age of Partial Objects

2005. Fine. 18 of 25 copies. Dean Dass is a noted artist, printmaker, and book artist. There have been many exhibits of his work , which can be found in both public and private collections. He has taught at the University of Virginia since 1985. Until this book, all of his books over the past twenty years have been manuscripts and thus unique. The Age of Partial Objects is his first editioned book. He worked on it for 18 months in order to not compromise his ideas of what is a book. For him the tension between the unique and the reproducible is vital. According to his artist's statement, this book turns Melanie Klein's clinical term "partial objects" into a metaphor for an age consisting of fragments and fragmented knowledge. The result of his efforts is a stunning book that conveys mystery, the incomplete, and the melancoly of existence. On various papers, Dass used gouache, collage, pencil, inkjet, etching lithography, Xerox and Xerox transfer, and letterpress to create this book. Bound in grey and silver paper laminated on cotton with letter press text of title on cover. Quarto in fine condition. 150 pages. ArtistsBooks/110910.

ALEXANDER ANDERSON (1775 - 1870) WOOD ENGRAVER AND ILLUSTRATOR AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY

[New Castle & Worcester]: Oak Knoll Press / American Antiquarian Society, 2005.. Three volumes. Quarto. Heavily illustrated. Custom bound by hand by Gray Parrot in handsome quarter green morocco with marbled paper side-panels and morocco fore-edges, spines gilt extra, with contrasting gilt morocco labels. The whole enclosed in a matching green cloth covered clamshell box, with gilt morocco labels. First edition. This special binding is not an edition binding, but was commissioned specifically by the original owner of the set. "This three volume, comprehensive bibliography focuses on the important American wood engraver, Alexander Anderson; 1775-1870. The author has selected over 1,000 of Anderson's engravings to illustrate this major bibliography. This work begins with a well written and researched biography on Anderson's life. There are over 2,322 entries. Alexander Anderson was recognized by the first decades of the nineteenth century as this country's preeminent illustrator. Called the father of wood engraving in America and one of the masters of American Wood engraving, his prodigious work filled publications of every kind, separate prints, almanacs, fiction, travel, children's books, poetry, Bibles, religious tracts, medical texts, and broadsides. He is noted for his warm and often slyly humorous depictions of children in the large total of juvenile publications that he illustrated. The huge expansion of wood engravers and illustration that followed Anderson owed a debt to his skill and universally acclaimed artistic sense. He set a standard for successors who worked in the medium he had introduced. This study names and analyzes the publications where Anderson's work can be found. There are three indexes provided, one for authors and titles, a second for printers, publishers and booksellers, and a third for artists and engravers. Libraries, museums, book collectors and dealers, and all those interested in graphic arts will be able to identify Anderson's work and add to the history of American nineteenth-century book illustration. No understanding of American illustration is complete without an examination of Anderson's appealing and masterly engravings" - Publisher's blurb. Shipping significantly extra.

        Homage Braccelli

Boston. 2005. Artist's book, one of 10 copies, each signed and numbered in pencil by the artist, Laura Davidson, on the colophon. Page size: 6-13/16 inches x 5- 7/16 inches; 10pp. + frontis woodcut and colophon as endpapers. There are two pages pop-up prints, and 4 other pages of original prints. Bound by the artist: black cloth with title inset on front panel on cream stock printed in gray, fine. The artist states in the colophon that she intends this book to be a tribute to Giovanni Braccelli, who in 1624 in Livorno, created a series of etchings in a book called BIZZARIE DI VARIE FIGURE. She examined one of the two surviving copies at the Library of Congress, and the playful, acrobatic and quite modern figures of Braccelli stayed with her. She has reinterpreted them here as pop-up elements made from original prints accomplished in gray ink, the first two with the added elements of copper links and white string.
See an Image.
General Statutes of New Jersey [With] Table of Statutes

2005. [New Jersey]. [Vroom, Garret D.W., and William M. Lanning, Compilers]. General Statutes of New Jersey. Published Under the Authority of the Legislature, by Virtue of an Act Approved April 4, 1894, and a Supplement Thereto, Approved March 20, 1895. Jersey City: Frederick D. Linn & Co., 1896. [With] Luce, Edward J., Compiler. Table of Statutes Included in The General Statutes of New Jersey 1703-1895. Newark: Soney & Sage, 1900. With a new introduction and new table of contents by Paul Axel-Lute, Collection Development Librarian, Rutgers School of Law Library, Newark. Three volumes. xii, lxxvi, 4098 pp. Reprinted 2005 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. ISBN-13: 9781584776734. ISBN-10: 1584776730. Cloth. * This compilation succeeded the previous edition of 1877. Two-and-a-half times the size of its predecessor, it records the greatest increase in public general legislation between any two consecutive compilations in New Jersey's history. Its bulk pays witness to the state's rapid growth during the nineteenth century and its engagement with the forces of modernity. Such topics as "Usury" and "Militia" in 1877 are redefined as "Interest" and "National Guard"; new additions include laws dealing with labor arbitration, civil rights and occupational safety. Luce's Table of Statutes, an invaluable tool originally published separately in 1900, is included in Volume I. Our reprint also has a detailed table of contents, a feature that was not included in the original work.
