        True to Life.

Flying Fish Press, Berkeley, CA 2005 - First Edition, limited to 100 copies, each signed and numbered by the author / artist, Julie Chen. The book is printed letterpress using a combination of pressure plates, woodblocks, and photopolymer plates. It was assembled and bound at Flying Fish Press with assistance from Macy Chadwick. The book is a tablet that sits on its own easel, housed within the box holding the book. The tablet, covered in deep red silk, fastened with brass in each corner, has an opening 10-1/2 inches x 6-7/8 inches covered with plexi, through which is viewed the text. Along each vertical side of the box are wooden "arrows" each numbered in turquoise on an orange ground, reading 2-12, each representing a page. The box measures 14-7/8 inches x 8-1/4 inches. To view the pages, the reader must push up both the "arrows" marked "2" or "3" etc. The colophon is printed on the inside of the tray case holding the book, with the easel on the back. The box folds out on each side, to reveal images printed in green and yellow in a very organic abstract design. The name of the press is on the left fold-down, printed in back on a strip of tobacco-colored Japanese paper. On the right fold-down is text relating to the book in the form of six strips printed on the same tobacco-colored Japanese paper in black. The text reads Page 1: In times of transition / there is an irresistible urge to look back / touch the wound again and again Page 2: Try to pinpoint the precise moment of error / Admit to yourself that you knew you were making a mistake before you even began / Relive the pain of knowing you were wrong Page 3: Turn events into a story that you can tell yourself and others / change the words ever so slightly with each telling / play up the drama / give the dialogue more dignity than it had at the time / omit shameful scenes of humiliation Page 4: Leave out certain painful exchanges that play over and over in your mind / tell yourself that you are preserving the truth / even as you reinvent the details one by one / allow the story to replace your actual memories and so on. Each page alternates from an orange ground to a celadon ground. Each page is illustrated with abstract images, very organic in nature, as well as a partial view of a long, continuous visual timeline. The covers - right and left - fold open and there is an onlay image, 6-7/8 inches x 1- 7/8 inches in shades of green on board with title and author printed in black on tobacco colored paper the same width of the image. The left cover has a cutout that fits over the onlay image on the right cover, acting as a fastener for the book. Once again, Julie Chen has pushed the boundaries on the definition of a book and created a provocative meditation on time and space and how life interacts therein. [Attributes: First Edition]

THE EPIC/DRAMATISTS AND DRAMAS/SHORT STORY WRITERS AND SHORT STORIES/ESSAYISTS AND PROPHETS/POETS AND POEMS/NOVELISTS AND NOVELS: BLOOM'S LITERARY CRITICISM 20TH ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION

Philadelphia, PA: The Chelsea House, 2005. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. Philadelphia, PA: The Chelsea House, 2005. Hardcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 2057 pages. Retrospective collections of essays on literature. One of the greatest literary achievements of our time. The Complete Set. Each volume is the First Hardcover Edition in its First Printing. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published by The Chelsea House in first print runs as hardcover originals only, each individually released volume is part of Harold Bloom&#39;s Literary Criticism 20th Anniversary Collection. Individually and collectively, The Collection celebrates literature and just as important, the epochal role that Harold Bloom has played as its most formidable and authoritative champion. The Uniform-Edition design by Takeshi Takahashi beautifully presents each volume as the integral part of a larger whole: Regular-sized volume format. Glossy pictorial hard boards with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. A brilliant drawing of Harold Bloom by various American cartoonist/artists, notably The New York Review of Books&#39; David Levine, is reproduced on the cover of each volume. Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ&#39;s, as issued. Presents Harold Bloom&#39;s Literary Criticism 20th Anniversary Collection, all six volumes, 2, 057 pages in all. Prolific and indefatigable, inhumanly and therefore genuinely so, the insomniac, workaholic Genius of Yale is the critical intelligence behind every piece. The volumes are "The Epic"; "Dramatists And Dramas"; "Short Story Writers And Short Stories"; "Essayists And Prophets"; "Poets And Poems"; and "Novelists And Novels". The greatest living literary critic turns out to be nothing more, and nothing less, than the greatest living reader. He has read more than anybody else: More completely, more intelligently, and more humanely. Harold Bloom does not subscribe to any extrinsic, ideologically motivated "theory" (unless intelligence, insight, and ecstasy constitute theory), but he does believe in three intrinsic standards: Aesthetic splendor, cognitive power, and wisdom. One can read the volumes "straight-through" over a period of several (sleepless) weeks or dip into them from time to time. Either way, one will surely go back to them over and over again for the rest of one&#39;s reading life, for illumination, enlightenment, and pleasure. Bloom reminds us above all, and we need to be reminded in a time of easy "gizmo" distractions, that reading is not oppressive but liberating, perhaps the most significant personal act a human being will make to assert his or her freedom. An absolute "must-have" set for Harold Bloom and literature reader/collectors. <b><i> These titles are classics. As far as we know, this is the only Complete Set of the First Hardcover Editions/First Printings available online and is in especially and uniformly fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, pristine beauties. A rare set thus. </b></i> The greatest living literary critic. A fine collectible set. (SEE ALSO OTHER HAROLD BLOOM TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).

Thesaurus Laurentii a Brundusio : Pars I: Opera theologica et exegetica : Series A: Formae

Turnhout: Brepols Publishers. Very Good with no dust jacket. 2005. Hardcover. 2503516564 . Top edge foxed, text edgewear near microfiche holder, otherwise light wear. Crisp oversize hardcover. ; Word lists and concordances in Latin; introductory matter in Italian and French. Accompanying microfiches housed in plastic pocket sleeves inside back cover.

        Geryon's Country

[Leonia, NJ]. 2005. One of 25 artist's books in form of tunnel , each containing a three- dimensional accordion-file bucolic scene of Geryon's red cattle, as well as three stand-alone cut-out figures, one of Geryon himself, with legs, arms, and wings grommeted so all 6 legs and arms and 2 wings move, and he can be inserted in the panorama with his herd and his red dog, jaws grommeted so that he can bear his teeth or not, and one figure of Geryon WITHOUT wings but with his six arms and legs gromted so that he can be inserted in the panorama with his herd. The artist's statement is Gocco- printed and color penciled onto digital color supreme glossy recycled Arches text wove paper and appears on each side of the "tunnel.". The figure is handcut and assembled from Fabriano Tiziano lava red paper. The text on the left side of the panorama recounts one of Hercules' twelve labors - the stealing of Geryon's cows - during which Hercules kills the six-armed, six-legged giant. The text on the right side of the panorama refers to an alternate version of the mythy, citing Anne Carson's AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF RED in which she portrays a far more vulnerable Geryon, who had a red dog that was also killed by Hercules during his theft. The artist captions her panorama without words "Believe what you will." Another two-sided story - provocatively and beautifully told through visualization. Size: 5-3/8 inches x 9 inches opening to 4 inches; colophon on back of panorama within foldout case that also houses cut-out figure, the whole book housed in custom-made printed gold and red cloth case, lined with red silk, fastened with white buttons, fine.

GOODBYE, COLUMBUS & FIVE SHORT STORIES, LETTING GO (NOVELS AND STORIES 1959-1962) - Rare Signed Copy of The Library of America Slipcased Edition/First Printing - ONLY COPY ONLINE

New York City, NY: The Library Of America, 2005 - 1st Printing. Signed. 913 pages. Published in 2005. Volume One of The Library of America's definitive Collected Works of Philip Roth. The First Slipcased Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a Slipcased Edition for distribution to libraries and LOA subscribers only. None of the copies were sold to the public. The Slipcased Edition has the same ISBN as the regular trade edition. The Slipcased Edition is now rare. Philip Roth is only the third living American writer to be so honored by The Library of America. Published in chronological order, the entire oeuvre consists of nine volumes in all and will surely be regarded as one of the "high spots" in The Library of America Series. Printed to absolutely the highest standards on acid-free paper, utilizing sewn binding, closely woven rayon cloth boards, satin bound-in ribbon marker, and a page layout that is both readable and elegant, each volume is guaranteed to last for several generations of readers and collectors (despite frequent and regular use, the estimated life span of Library of America Editions is 1000 years; un-used, they will last forever). Each volume is scrupulously edited and annotated by Ross Miller. The first volume presents the two books that inaugurated the author's long, productive, and stupendous literary career. "Unlike those of us who come howling into the world, blind and bare, Mr. Roth appears with nails, hair, teeth, speaking coherently. He is skilled, witty, energetic, and performs like a virtuoso" (Saul Bellow). "One knows when one is reading something that will permanently enter the culture" (Cynthia Ozick). "Our foremost novelist since Faulkner" (Harold Bloom). Philip Roth famously announced in 2012 that he has permanently stopped writing. Volume Eight and Volume Nine appeared in late-February 2013 and complete the Series. A "must-have" edition for Philip Roth collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Philip Roth. The First Slipcased Edition was distributed to libraries and LOA subscribers only. None of the copies were sold to the public. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the First "Library of America" Slipcased Edition/First Printing available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. Roth has not made public appearances or done signings in a very long time so signed copies of The Collected Works are now highly collectible. A very rare signed copy thus. "Goodbye, Columbus" won the National Book Award in 1959, the first of numerous major awards the writer has received. Six of Philip Roth's novels were selected as among the Top 20 works of American fiction of the last 25 years: "American Pastoral", "The Counterlife", "Operation Shylock", "Sabbath's Theater", "The Human Stain", and "The Plot Against America". One of the greatest living writers. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER PHILIP ROTH TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 1931082790. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince - SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR.

Bloomsbury, London 2005 - HARDBACK - A very fine book that has been boldly signed by the author to the title page. The dust wrapper is in fine condition, and has not been price clipped. There is a copy of the original letter from J.K Rowling's P.A that accompanies this book. The previous owner wished to keep the original letter but was kind enough to print off an exact copy. The Half Blood Prince is probably, the hardest book to acquire signed by the author, as J K Rowling did not appear at any publicity, or signing events upon the books release. Bloomsbury did distribute a number of Signed Book Plates. Some of these book plates were sent to certain bookshops, some were given as competition prizes. An unread, signed book with excellent provenance. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Incendiary (Ltd)

Chatto & Windus, 2005. 1st printing 1st. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Signed by Author. SIGNED LIMITED EDITION. A superb copy of the UK first edition, first printing hardback - in a fine dustjacket - "A massive terrorist attack on Arsenal&#39;s new stadium - a woman grieving for her husband and son - a unique, twisted powerhouse of a novel. Angry, funny, heart-rending and subversive, few first novels are as compelling as this one. From the first sentence of her open letter to Osama Bin Laden, Incendiary&#39;s unforgettable narrator won&#39;t let you go, and her cry of raw outrage at the murder of her family rapidly develops into something very unexpected. Part thriller, part satire, part memorial to a dead child, it shows us an East End woman trying every way she can to climb out of despair, and a society in the grip of fear and self-interest. It is a story in which everyone is compromised - where personal betrayals reflect national ones, and Britain&#39;s class system is a ticking bomb. Shocking but tender, brutal yet hopeful, Incendiary forces us to see what we&#39;d rather not see, yet never fails to entertain. The writing moves from horror to humour with terrifying ease. The power of the storytelling is mesmerising. Cleave has pinned a generation down on the mat and refused to allow it up till it admits it&#39;s rotten" - SIGNED & DATED BY THE AUTHOR

Each portfolio also includes the catalogue of broadsides, an essay by Nina Schneider, and a curatorial statement by Roni Gross, artist member and project organizer. Nancy Loeber, Barbara Mauriello, Benjamin Rinehart, and Peter Schell each designed a unique portfolio (edition of 25 each) to house the contributions; this one was designed by Peter Schell.

Using the relevant sheets of the 1:25,000 Ordnance Survey maps, the Architect&#39;s staff hand-coloured the maps according to the degree of damage suffered by each building. The sheets also indicated the impact points of the German V1 flying bombs and V2 long-range rockets of 1944 and 1945, together with the extensive devastation that they caused" (introduction).         Thesaurus Laurentii a Brundusio : Pars I: Opera theologica et exegetica : Series A: Formae

Brepols Publishers, Turnhout 2005 - Top edge foxed, text edgewear near microfiche holder, otherwise light wear. Crisp oversize hardcover. ; Word lists and concordances in Latin; introductory matter in Italian and French. Accompanying microfiches housed in plastic pocket sleeves inside back cover.

        Arthur & George

Jonathan Cape, 2005. 1st. Hardcover. Fine/n/a. Signed by Author. Fine, First Edition, cloth boards. SIGNED by Author to title page. Issued without DJ. Wraparound band is complete and attached. 2005 Man-Booker short-listed. Synopsis: Arthur and George grow up worlds and miles apart in late nineteenth-century Britain: Arthur in shabby-genteel Edinburgh, George in the vicarage of a small Staffordshire village. Arthur becomes a doctor, and then a writer; George a solicitor in Birmingham. Arthur is to become one of the most famous men of his age, George remains in hardworking obscurity. But as the new century begins, they are brought together by a sequence of events which made sensational headlines at the time as The Great Wyrley Outrages. George Edjali?s father is Indian, his mother Scottish. When the family begins to receive vicious anonymous letters, many about their son, they put it down to racial prejudice. They appeal to the police, to no less than the Chief Constable, but to their dismay he appears to suspect George of being the letters? author. Then someone starts slashing horses and livestock. Again the police seem to suspect the shy, aloof Birmingham solicitor. He is arrested and, on the flimsiest evidence, sent to trial, found guilty and sentenced to seven years? hard labour. Arthur Conan Doyle, famous as the creator of the world?s greatest detective, is mourning his first wife (having been chastely in love for ten years with the woman who was to become his second) when he hears about the Edjali case. Incensed at this obvious miscarriage of justice, he is galvanised into trying to clear George?s name. With a mixture of detailed research and vivid imagination, Julian Barnes brings to life not just this long-forgotten case, but the inner lives of these two very different men. The reader sees them both with stunning clarity, and almost inhabits them as they face the vicissitudes of their lives, whether in the dock hearing a verdict of guilty, or trying to live an honourable life while desperately in love with another woman. This is a novel in which the events of a hundred years ago constantly set off contemporary echoes, a novel about low crime and high spirituality, guilt and innocence, identity, nationality and race; about what we think, what we believe, and what we know.Julian Barnes has long been recognised as one of Britain?s most remarkable writers. While those already familiar with his work will enjoy its elegance, its wit, its profound wisdom about the human condition, Arthur & George will surely find him an entirely new audience.
