        Mayflies of the Driftless Region

Wisconsin: Midnight Paper Sales, 2005. One of 300 copies. 14 color wood engravings (13 specimen plates plus a microscope) by Gaylord Schanilec. 13 entomological identifications of specimens by Dr. Clarke Gary. Hand-set in Bembo monotype. Printed on Zerkal mould-made paper. Bound in quarter leather by Gregor Campbell with handmade paper by Mary Hark. Issued in a slipcase. Mint. A study of mayflies by an artist: "I began this project with little practical knowledge of mayfly entomology. It was not the information in Halford's Dry Fly Entomology that caught my attention, but rather the detailed wood engravings that illustrated it. While Mayflies of the Driftless Region may provide useful information for fishermen and women of similar naïveté, the essence of the book is art. I have created 13 depictions of mayflies, color wood engravings with each hue printed from a separate block of end-grain maple. These images are the result of careful microscopic study of specimens collected from streams near my home in rural Wisconsin.

MARY ELLEN MARK: EXPOSURE: THE ICONIC PHOTOGRAPHS

London, England: Phaidon Press, 2005. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. London, England: Phaidon Press, 2005. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 288 pages. Massive retrospective collection of photographs. The single most complete and valuable book on the photographic art of Mary Ellen Mark. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the Softcover Edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Phaidon Press and Mary Shanahan: Oversize-volume format. The book weighs 6 pounds. Pristine-white hard boards with metallic-silver titles embossed on spine, as issued. Photographs and Afterword by Mary Ellen Mark. Essay, "Family Ties", by Weston Naef, Curator of The Photography Department, Getty Museum Los Angeles. Chronology appended at the end. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper to the highest standards. In pristine-white DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Published in 2005 to celebrate Mary Ellen Mark's 40th Anniversary Year as a photographer. Presents, in a beautiful edition, the most comprehensive retrospective of Mary Ellen Mark's life-work. She made her first pictures in Turkey on a Fulbright Fellowship in 1960. Her photographs in the 1970's of Bombay brothels were published as "Falkland Road", a masterpiece and (together with "Ward 81"), the collection confirmed her stature as one of the most provocative documentary photographers of our time. "Mark's pictures are a celebration of humanity in its most diverse and eccentric forms. Circuses, gypsy camps, children yearning for adulthood, the poor and destitute are some of her recurring themes. Mark has the unique ability to capture gestures and expressions that translate the intense emotions of her subjects. Compassionate but never literal, her pictures can be humorous, tragic, enigmatic, shocking, and often, all of these simultaneously. Mark's images provide intimate insights into the lives of others, presenting compelling stories of human strength and suffering" (Winston Naef). Apart from the iconic images of the title, Mary Ellen Mark has included a generous selection of photographs that appear in book form for the very first time. Mary Ellen Mark died on May 25, 2015, Memorial Day, at the age of 75, an irreplaceable loss. A stunningly beautiful book. An absolute "must-have" title for Mary Ellen Mark collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the half-title page by Mary Ellen Mark. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 118 duotone, 17 color plates. Voted by American Photo Magazine as the most important and most influential female photographer of all time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER MARY ELLEN MARK TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0714844047.

        KIKUJI KAWADA: THE MAP (CHIZU)

(KAWADA, KIKUJI). Kawada, Kikuji. KIKUJI KAWADA: THE MAP (CHIZU). Tucson, AZ & Tokyo: Nazraeli Press & Getsuyosha Ltd., 2005. First Edition Thus 1/500. 8vo. Cloth in Pictorial Slipcase. Photography Monograph. As New/No Jacket - As Issued. np, profusely illustrated in b&w. Text in Japanese and English. With a chronology. "Originally published on August 6, 1965 - the twentieth anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima - Kikuji Kawada's "The Map (Chizu)" is a true icon in the history of photographic publishing. Its status as the "ultimate photobook-as-object", coupled with its scarcity, combined to make it one of the most famous and sought-after photographic publications in existence. "The Map" combines powerful graphic design with a masterful photographic narrative exploring recent Japanese history - its imperialist past, western-influenced popular culture, and brutally violent clash with the United States. The photographs, many visible only with the opening of the multiple double-page gatefolds, capture on high-contrast film scenes of places and objects seared with the memory of horrific wartime events, from the atomic-bomb dome in Hiroshima to a trampled Japanese flag. Nazraeli Press in association with Getsuyosha Ltd. is proud to announce a facsimile reprint of this historic book. This edition is limited to only five hundred copies for distribution in the United States and Europe. Each copy is hand-numbered and signed by the artist, who also oversaw production of the project". A brand new, pristine example of the uncommon 2005 Nazraeli Press edition (whose 1965 Bijutsu Shuppan-sha first edition is cited on pages 286-287 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume I", pages 212-213 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book", and pages 86-93 of Ryuichi Kaneko and Ivan Vartanian's "Japanese Photobooks of the 1960s and '70s") NUMBERED AND SIGNED by Kikuji Kawada still in the publisher's shrinkwrap.         Of Woodland Pools, Spring-Holes & Ditches

Petersham, Massachusetts: Lone Oak Press, 2005. Rorer, Abigail. Oblong quarto. 89pp. Of a total edition of fourteen deluxe copies and 70 standard copies, this is one of five deluxe copies chosen to be specially bound for the international traveling exhibit "InsideOUT: Contemporary Bindings of Private Press Books," and as such, it does not include the extra suite or block as listed in the colophon. The exhibit, organized by British binding society Designer Bookbinders, married the works of nine private presses with the artistry of 59 binders from the United Kingdom and the United States. The text consists of selections from Henry David Thoreau's journal, which describe the vernal pools of New England that serve as breeding habitats for all manner of amphibians. Accompanying the text are twenty-eight engravings by Lone Oak Press founder Abigail Rorer, some of which are hand-colored by the artist. The detailed drawings brilliantly capture the teeming life and varied textures of these small pools. The book was designed by Michael Russem of the Kat Ran Press and includes an introduction by Thoreau scholar Bradley P. Dean. The designer binding, specially commissioned for the exhibit, is by Mark Esser. Esser developed the curriculum and was the first instructor for the hand bookbinding program at the North Bennet Street School in Boston, and now works as a private binder in Massachusetts. This binding is full brown goatskin with leather onlays and gold and blind tooling, top edge gilt. On the cover, green reeds enter a rippling pool and are cleverly refracted beneath the water's surface. A repeating yellow leaf design frames the image, continuing inside onto the green goatskin doublures. Opposite, the marbled paper flyleaves are reminiscent of stones and pebbles. Housed in a brown cloth clamshell box. As a whole, Esser's work evokes the deep peace found in nature, and of the surprises that lurk just below the surface. Extremely fine.

        Isometria.

2005 - Unique manuscript book and binding signed by the artist.Arc-spine drum-leaf mixed media binding with fully articulated joints and hematite/graphite endpapers. Manuscript frontispiece, manuscript and letterpress title page signed by the artist. One double-page manuscript illustration. 5 leaves total. Housed in a custom clamshell box by the artist. 21cm x 32cm.Artist’s descriptionSome months ago, several books on drawing projection systems came into my collection. Just as with my bookbinding collection, each book contributes some glimmer of insight or a method of describing an object or idea in the 4-D space in which we exist. This is why I collect.I have posed a problem to drafters, engineers and artists on/off for over 15 years- the problem being how to describe lines on a warped surface, a sphere to be specific. No answers were forth coming. Finally, in one of the books, was the answer I sought.Isometria begins to describe the solution. The paper of the book, in places barely apprehensible, locates an isometric expression. Over this,"a warped surface" is delineated and abstraction of an idea is newly formatted.Isometria is part of the TXC* system of experimental tomes. It is made up of essentially one elaborate drawing, housed between carefully articulated endpapers which most aptly demonstrate my theory of dust and its application. The book paper is deep treated with scoring and gelatine chemical preparation before being surfaced with the formal drafting materials of my craft.Timothy C. Ely, Colfax,WA 2005*"TXC" refers to any experiment either in structure or system and usually lies outside the conventions in which I work. These books are usually made to test fly a solution to a vexing problem.         TheComputationofFourierSyntheses with a Digital Electronic Calculating Machine", in Acta Crystallographica, Volume 5, 1952, pp.109-116

      - FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF "THE FIRST PAPER PUBLISHED IN A SCIENTIFIC JOURNAL ON THE APPLICATION OF AN ELECTRONIC COMPUTER TO COMPUTATIONAL BIOLOGY" AND CRYSTAL-STRUCTURE INVESTIGATION (Christies, Origin of Cyberspace Auction, 2005, 139). A brief summary was published in the Manchester Conference Proceedings, but this paper was intended for x-ray crystallographers and is far more thorough. Working together at the Cavendish Laboratory, the English biochemists John BennettandJohn Kendrew"wrote the first program for three-dimensional Fourier calculations" which Kendrewthen ran on the an early British computer, EDSAC (Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Calculator) "in order to solve the structure of the protein myoglobin" (ibid). "During the 1940s the limitation of human calculation ability was reached in solving the structures of molecules with about 10 distinct atoms. The production of electron density maps for structure analysis involves very heavy calculations on large quantities of numerical data, and the state of the art during the early 1940s was such that the limits of human ability in this area were reached at structures containing not more than about 10 crystallographically distinct atoms. "The determination of a 10-atom-type structure involved, in the early 1940s, about six weeks of experimental work followed by anything up to three years of hand computation for a group of human "slaves" and, even during wartime, I [Kendrew] was trying to design equipment to mechanize parts of the crystallographic process" (ibid). The suite of programs that Kendrew and Bennett designed "could perform the arithmetical operations 'of addition and subtraction' in one and a half milliseconds, and 'multiplication in six milliseconds' (Garcia-Sancho, Biology, Computing, and the History of Molecular Sequencing, 75). "Without the speed of electronic computing, the structure of protein molecules that contain thousands of distinct atoms would never have been solved" (Origin of Cyberspace). CONDITION & DETAILS: Copenhagen: Ejnar Munksgaard Ltd. First edition in original wraps. 4to. 10.25 by 7.5 inches (256 x 188mm). pp. 1-156. Meticulously re-backed at the spine with the original spine label. Pristine condition inside and out. Fine.

Certain Topics in Telegraph Transmission Theory" in Bell Telephone Laboratories, August 1928, pp. 1-79

FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST SEPARATE PRINTING OF HARRY NYQUIST'S SAMPLING THEOREM, A FUNDAMENTAL TENET OF INFORMATION THEORY. Note that the 2005 Origins of Cyberspace auction at Christie's also offered only this separate, August 1928 Bell Labs printing (devoted entirely to Nyquist's paper) and not the April 1928 original publication in Transactions of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers. Nyquist is considered one of the "founding father['s] of digital communications" (Maliniak, Electronic Design, Oct. 20, 2005). "Products like cell phones, audio CDs, and iPods are all based on the broad-shouldered foundation of the [sampling] theorem" (ibid). "In a 1924 paper in the Bell System Technical Journal, Nyquist [working at Bell Telephone Laboratories] first referred to what was transmitted by telegraphers as "information." He suggested that two factors determined the "maximum speed of transmission of intelligence." The 1928 paper offered here was Nyquist's seminal work. "In an effort to improve the speed of data transmission over telegraph wires, Nyquist isolated two key factors -- signal shaping and choice of codes. 'The first is concerned with the best shape to be impressed on the transmitting medium so as to permit of greater speed without undue interference either in the circuit under consideration or in those adjacent, while the latter deals with the choice of codes which will permit of transmitting a maximum amount of intelligence with a given number signal elements'"(Nyquist, p. 324; Origins of Cyberspace, 163). "According to the Sampling Theorem, an analog signal must be sampled at regular intervals over time and at twice the frequency of its highest-frequency component to be converted into an adequate representation of the signal in digital form. Thus, the "Nyquist frequency" is the highest frequency that can be accurately sampled. It represents one-half of the sampling frequency. Adhering to the Nyquist Sampling Theorem ensures no lost data upon reconstruction in the analog domain" (Maliniak). Nyquist's work was enormously influential to the communication engineers that followed him. This was especially true of his Bell Labs colleague, Claude Shannon [the other father of information theory]. Nyquist's work was cited in the first paragraph of Shannon's own claim to greatness, the 1948 paper titled "The Mathematical Theory of Communications." Shannon also credits "Nyquist's paper as being one of the foundations of information theory" (OOC 163). "Numerous experts say that Nyquist stated the Sampling Theorem, and Shannon later mathematically proved it. Moreover, many believe that Nyquist and Shannon are responsible for virtually all theoretical advances in modern communications" (Maliniak). CONDITION & DETAILS: American Institute of Electrical Engineers. [9 x 6 inches; 225 x 150mm]. pp. 1-79. Complete issue. Bound in original paper wraps in pristine condition save for a small spot at the inner margin of the front wrap. Three holes punched in the left margin are well outside of the area of text. In fine condition, it is housed in a custom pamphlet case that is gilt-lettered at the spine.

EVANGELIAR DES JOHANN VON TROPPAU - Faksimile CORON
