The entire book is printed on 100% cotton, mould-made paper imported from England. In 1832, Prince Maximilian and his artist, Carl Bodmer embarked on an expedition through North America to compare the Indians and natural history to those of South America which the prince had explored earlier. Their Journey would take them deep into the interior of North America, to Fort McKenzie, near present-day Great Falls, Montana. After returning to Europe in 1834, Prince Maxmilian spent the rest of his life studying his collections. This book is his major contribution to North American herpetology and is illustrated with seven beautifully handcolored plates of turtles and salamanders by Carl Bodmer.

        The End, Montauk, N.Y

Abrams, New York. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/Very Good. DWECK, MICHAEL. The End, Montauk, N.Y., New York: Abrams, 2004. Tall folio, first edition, unpaginated, beige cloth boards with blind-stamped lettering on spine and front, about 150 halftone and color photo plates profiling the free-spirited surfing community at the eastern end of New York's Long Island. The photographer wrote of Montauk: "It's 100 miles from Manhattan, yet almost no one locks their doors and the taco stand extends credit. Everyone knows the freewheeling vibe can't last, they're just determined that it won't disappear on their watch. ... I focused on the subjects I was most interested in, the surfers. By and large these are kids who are the same age I was when I first fell in love with the place. They are beautiful and sexy and tribal in a way no one who hasn't been part of the surf community can understand." Condition of this book: Spine shaken, jacket moderately worn, no tears, remainder mark at bottom edge, double gatefold is wrinkled at opening, images fine. Overall very good. Size: Large Folio (bigger than A3). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. All edges clean, neat and free of foxing. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 2-3 kilos. Category: Photography; United States; 1990s; Sports & Pastimes.         MICHAEL DWECK: THE END, MONTAUK, N.Y.

Harry N. Abrams Incorporated, New York 2004 - 200pp, 201 duotone and 15 color illustrations. Designed by Jeremy Miller. "Published in 2004, Michael Dweck's first major photographic work portrays the old New York fishing community of Montauk and its surfing subculture. "The End: Montauk, N.Y." is an American version of the Arcadian vision. Blending nostalgia, fantasy, and documentation, these striking photographs from the dunes of its secret surfing haunts present a paradisiacal narrative about summer and youth; portraying a compelling portrait of a place in time and a way of life at once fading and being reinvented with each new season. Fueled by its groundbreaking narrative form, and now-iconic images like the cover's nude, "Sonya", the first printing became an instant classic". A brand new, most handsome example of the uncommon 2004 Harry N. Abrams first printing of this stunning tome limited to five thousand copies still in the publisher's printed vellum cover band.         Testament of Cresseid, A Retelling of Robert Henryson's Poem by Seamus Heaney

Enitharmon Editions (2004), (London) - No. 2 of 75 of the de luxe edition (total edition 475), with a signed and numbered original etching. Robert Henryson (ca. 1420-1490) was a Middle Scots poet whose existing work is comprised of three long poems and a few shorter works. This work imagines a tragic fate for Cressida in the medieval story of Troilus and Criseyde which was left untold by Geoffrey Chaucer in his version. Seamus Justin Heaney (1939-2013), a Nobel Prize-winning author in his own right and considered by many as the greatest poet of the 20th century, was also a noted translator (his version of Beowulf was considered groundbreaking in its use of modern language melded with the original Anglo-Saxon "music"). In his introduction to this work, he warns the reader that he "must be prepared to go on a strange journey". The selection of this poem was his, as a fitting complement to the artwork of Hughie O'Donoghue (b. 1953), for, as Mr. Heaney says in the close of his introduction, "this artist has a mastery and gravitas, a combination of detachment and answerability, of intimacy and bigness, that are reminiscent of Henryson" (N.B., above info from Wiki and book's introduction). ***DESCRIPTION: Bound in evergreen cloth, small pictorial pastedown inset to the front board, paper spine label, fore-edge uncut, title page in green and black, six illustrations by Hughie O'Donoghue tipped onto pages bound within the text; text designed and printed by Sebastian Carter of the Rampant Lions Press, types Perpetua and Golden Cockerel Roman, paper Arches Velin, small folio in size (just over 12.25" tall), pagination: (1)-41, blank (42), colophon (43); limited edition of 475 copies total, of which 75 are the de luxe version with a signed and numbered original etching by Hughie O'Donoghue, this no. 2, signed on the colophon page by both Seamus Heaney and Hughie O'Donoghue. The separate, signed print is tissue-guarded and contained within a wallet of heavy ivory cardstock, this number 2 of 75. The matching publisher's slipcase is covered in the same evergreen cloth, paper label on the front. ***CONDITION: Fine, the binding clean and unrubbed and the green colour deep (no sunning), the front pastedown perfect with no edgewear, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, perfectly straight corners with no rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings. The separate signed print and its wallet are also fine, with no edgewear or creases. The slipcase is fine as well, strong and sturdy, the cloth binding unrubbed, the pastedown clean and free of edgewear. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the Abe standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         Imprisoned Words.

San Francisco, California:: Vince Koloski,, 2004.. Edition of 4. 23 inches by 18 inches by 8 inches (closed); 23 inches by 18 inches by 16 inches (open). Neon, Laser-etched Acrylic Sheet, Jail Bars. All of the passages quoted in this piece are from works created while the writers were in prison or while their freedom was denied them. The quotes are from Boris Pasternak, Steve Biko, Martin Luther King, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Adolf Hitler, Mohandas Ghandi, and Nicola Sacco. Vince Koloski: "Making books that use light to create the content marries the symbolic and the practical aspects of light. Light in its role as symbol of knowledge illuminating the symbols which transfer and preserve knowledge is a powerful melding of medium and meaning. The presence projected by a book-like object in which the words and images seem to float in space between the covers is one that appeals to human perception in a way which seems to bypass the rational entirely. This is an irony given that the book is the human invention most responsible for creating the information-based civilization we live in today.

Moderation Is Not a Negation of Intensity, but Helps Avoid Monotony.

Boca Raton, Florida:: Hanne Niederhausen,, 2004.. Edition of 3. 11.5 x 7.25 x 1" closed, extends to 32"; 8 pages. Two-sided double accordion book (that is, two accordions, both using the front and back) with hand pulled etchings. Printed on Hahnemühle. Arial Narrow font. Laid in box covered with Fabriano Ingres with title tipped on cover. This book can be viewed in regular codex fashion or displayed standing upright. Viewed from above the angles of top and bottom accordion form a square. Hanne Niederhausen: "Art for me is pure, steady, and deep, but not excessive, overpowering, or dramatic. For this reason I was drawn to this poem by John Tagliabue which praises moderation and the ordinary blankness of little dramas in every-day life. In the etchings I was striving to complement this concept with details of my quiet and peaceful life in an Austrian hamlet. As quoted from Whitman: 'Lounge and invite the soul.' In the technique of etching the reworking and successive treatment of the zinc plate create nuances and subtleties which cannot be realized in any other medium. The slowness of the printmaking process allows time for ideas to internalize, change and mature. (Last Copy)

New York: Simon & Schuster, 2004. First Edition. First Printing. Octavo (22cm); white and gray paper-covered boards, with titles stamped in silver on spine; dustjacket; [6], 299, [1]pp. Mild wear to spine ends, with a handful of tiny spots to upper edge of textblock; Near Fine. Dustjacket is unclipped (priced $24.00), with corresponding light wear to spine ends and corners; Near Fine. First volume of Dylan's memoirs, this copy from the library of Israel "Izzy" Young," founder and owner of the Folklore Center in Greenwich Village, who gave refuge to a young Bob Dylan when he first came to New York in 1961, and who produced Dylan's first concert there. In Chronicles, Dylan remembers him affectionately on pp.18-22. Extensively annotated throughout by Young, with more than 190 pages annotated and/or with reader's marks by him, providing commentary on Dylan's own observations and other memories of Dylan during his early days in Greenwich Village. This copy bears the following note beneath the first chapter heading: "26 October 2004. This book consists of five parts. I'll read it in five days, not necessarily in order, perhaps in two weeks time - this is my personal copy - with my first thoughts as I read page by page and chapter by chapter. Izzy Young." An additional note in Young's hand on the rear flyleaf states: "October 2004 from Bob Dylan's office." Attempting to weigh the quality of Young's annotations, when read alongside Dylan's words, the reader encounters "a book-within-a-book," the narrative of which vacillates between agreeing and being at odds with Dylan. Facts, dates, corrections, and memories emerge - some clear, others non-linear - all of which serve to provide a unique historical perspective on Dylan and his times from a close friend and insider. Pasted in at the back of the book is Izzy's computer-generated liner notes to the reissue of Karen Dalton's 1968 LP - Karen a blues singer and guitarist whom Dylan had met and performed with in Denver the summer of 1960 (as described in Chronicles on p. 12). Young's annotations end with a 17-line, 160-word note about Karen Dalton, and his upcoming visit to Seattle to see Dylan and Jeff Rosen [Dylan's lawyer]: "Karen Dalton is not noticed in any of the Dylan biographies, and neither is she named in the scholarly books on folk music. So we [i.e. Dylan and Izzy] are agreed on her and we are alone in this matter. Bob Dylan was sent a copy of the article by Jeff Rosen ... I have no insight as to what will happen there [in Seattle] ... There will be many surprises for me, I am sure of that..." Also pasted in at the back is a printed email dated April 7, 2005 from Sam Charters asking Izzy to annotate a copy of Dylan's Chronicles for the Charters Music Archive in Storrs, CT: "The reason I ask you to do this annotated edition for the Archive is that I believe you have a unique contribution to make to our understanding of an important era in the development of American popular culture. Because of the close involvement that you and Dylan had ... I feel your annotated copy of the book will be of considerable use to scholars...
