(Seattle, 2004). - 7 1/4 x 6 3/4. There are 3 double-page spreads; and each spread is comprised of three levels. The base level (brown paper, white ink) gives details of Bradstreet's life. Stitched to this is a smaller sheet. Bradstreet's poem "An Author to Her Book", is printed on the pop-up pages. Circling the edges are sayings/proverbs collected by Anne Bradstreet. The embroidery stitches are appropriate to her time. Quarter linen & boards. Fine. No. 26 of 50 copies designed and printed letterpress by Margery S. Hellmann. Letterpress printed in brown, rust, black, and white inks on Canson Mi Teintes papers. "Over the course of many years, I traveled a meandering road on my way to bookmaking. Printmaking led me to papermaking and marbling, then collage, and then on to binding. Among the instructors guiding me along the binding trail were James Brockman, Deborah Evetts, Gary Frost, Hedi Kyle, and Ole Olsen. Eventually, my path turned to letterpress printing where I acquired my skills from Bonnie Thompson Norman at the Windowpane Press. From there the road led directly to limited edition books. Since 1995, I have worked as the Holburne Press. My goal has been to combine unconventional book structures with printing classic texts so as to create a dimension beyond the words Ñ an added visual language." [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        NEON TIGERS

Ostfildern-ruit, Germany: Hatje Cantz Publishers, 2004. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. Ostfildern-ruit, Germany: Hatje Cantz Publishers, 2004. Hardcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 115 pages. Collection of panoramic color photographs. One of the greatest photography books of the decade. The First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a very small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Peter Bialobrzeski: Oversize-volume format in wide oblong shape. Pictorial hard boards with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Peter Bialobrzeski. Essays by Florian Hanig and Christof Ribbat. Printed on thick coated stock paper in Germany to the very highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents photographs of the "mega-tropolis", made possible by the economic miracle of Asia's "tiger economies". The "Neon Tigers" are Shanghai, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok, and Kuala Lumpur. There are shelves of books on the explosive and seemingly unstoppable growth of China, once a "sleeping giant", which nows owns more than $2 trillion in US treasury bonds and growing. Peter Bialobrzeski's eye-opening, visually rich, and resonant photographs were all taken using well, a camera. But the resulting images give new meaning to "futuristic", "larger-than-life", and "absurd", presenting a world-view "that appears as a series of dream-images from an eccentric director or computer-game designer" (Publisher's blurb). Is this Progress, as Western capitalism envisioned it, or is this barbarism, as some critics and scholars have called it? Neither. It is Power Made Visible, as only photography (rather than say, painting) can fully grasp. Bialobrzeski's images are not about fantasies but new realities: While America = suburbia, Asia = the city. The city's most visible art, architecture, and architecture's most powerful invention, the skyscraper, are visible proof that if the 20th was the American century, the 21st is the Chinese century. Bialobrzeski has emerged as one of the leading figures of the inevitable revolt against the influential Dusseldorf School. He is a neo-Romantic who believes that the messiness and rich ambiguities of modern life are the true subject of contemporary photography. Whereas Robert Polidori and Andreas Gursky are clearly awed by the gleaming vistas they photograph, Bialobrzeski is not. He sees painful ironies everywhere. For example, whereas European and American cities still have a center, the Neon Tigers have shopping centers. He asks two crucial questions: What is the cost in human terms Asians have had to pay in their single-minded pursuit of prosperity? Is the idea of the human scale still possible in the 21st century? His photographs represent his attempt at some answers. A "must-have" title for Peter Bialobrzeski collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by Peter Bialobrzeski. This title is a contemporary classic. As far as we know, this is the only signed copy available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 50 color plates. One of the most brilliant living photographers. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ANDREAS GURSKY, ROBERT POLIDORI, AND MICHAEL WOLF TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 3775713948.

Astrolabes, surgical instruments, sundials, and implements for smoking are among the objects exhibited in this rarely displayed private collection.

His pictures reveal compassion and understanding, penetration and a masterly use of the medium" (The New York Times). "Heath photographed his fellow soldiers in the winter of 1953-54, the early months of a tenuous truce producing a suite of introspective portraits permeated with the malaise of war. It is a body of work that defined the young photographer as an artist" (Michael Torosian). Among great photographers, Dave Heath is the least prolific. Birds tells the remarkable story of the development of ornithological art through the ages, from the earliest images of birds in the Renaissance, through the Age of Exploration, to the present day. Brilliantly reproduced original artworks by such renowned artists as Audubon, Gould, MacGillivray, Thorburn, and Wolfe are included. The lively accompanying text tells the story of how ornithological art grew out of the naturalistic tradition of European painting to become a genre on its own, where the artist?s focus on aesthetic appeal was married to the scientist?s need for precision and detail. Many of the works reproduced in this volume have never before been published. The detailed text interweaves science, art history, biography, exploration, and travel to paint a vast and wondrous picture of the bygone world of artist-scientists, exotic birds, and faraway lands. It makes a perfect gift for anyone who loves fine prints and drawings or has an interest in nature or birding.

        SLEEPING BY THE MISSISSIPPI

Gottingen, Germany: Gerhard Steidl Druckerei Und Verlag, 2004. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. Gottingen, Germany: Gerhard Steidl Druckerei Und Verlag, 2004. Hardcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 120 pages. The photographer's breakthrough debut collection. One of the greatest photography books of our time. The First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a very small and limited print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Alec Soth and Gerhard Steidl: Oversize-volume format in oblong shape. Pictorial cloth boards with titles embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Alec Soth. Essays by Patricia Hampl and Anne Wilkes Tucker. Printed on thick coated stock paper in Gottingen, Germany to absolutely the highest standards. In publisher's original plastic wrappers. Without DJ, as issued. Presents one of the most sensational debut collections of our time. The title refers to the recurrence of beds throughout the book. A brilliant fusion of William Eggleston, William Christenberry, and Stephen Shore with a conceptual inflection and dry wit entirely his own, Alec Soth was the star of the Whitney Biennial in 2004, and garnered unanimous acclaim from writers and critics of all tastes: "Clearly working within and expanding on the tradition of the lyrical documentary which his photographs so clearly honor and advance. I know of no other photographer in his age group who surpasses his eloquence and poignant sense of place. His mastery of the medium has always been notable, and his eye for the telling nuance, gesture, and inflection exceptional" (Ted Hartwell) . "We've all seen gritty documentary photography, but no one has ever seen anything like his work. It's gritty for sure, but it's beautiful, really beautiful. With most documentary photography, you look at it, sigh, and pass on, but Soth's work keeps pulling you back to look again because he composes with the skill of the greatest of photographic artists. He's unafraid of humor and irony, which are impossible to leave out of any authentic American vision. He uses color as an integral part of his composition. That is not to say he photographs in color, which is all most color photographers do, but that his colors are as important as the objects, the people, and the things he captures" (John Wood) . Alec Soth's book is about travel-as-journey, place-as-destiny, life-as-pilgrimage. His work is acutely beautiful because Soth handles these otherwise heavy philosophical themes with a light touch, that is to say, as an artist (rather than a philosopher) . A "must-have" title for Alec Soth collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by Alec Soth. This is an Import title and is now highly collectible. This is one of very few signed copies of the First Edition/First Printing still available online, is still in the publisher's original plastic wrappers, and has absolutely no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 46 color plates. Alec Soth's "Sleeping By The Mississippi" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". ALEC SOTH: SLEEPING BY THE MISSISSIPPI - FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER

(SOTH, ALEC). Soth, Alec, Patricia Hampl & Anne Wilkes Tucker. ALEC SOTH: SLEEPING BY THE MISSISSIPPI - FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER. Signed by the Photographer. Gottingen, GERMANY: Steidl, 2004. First Edition, First Printing. 4to. Pictorial Boards. Photography Monograph. As New/No Jacket - As Issued. np (120pp), 46 color illustrations + covers. Designed by Steidl Design. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. "Evolving from a series of road trips along the Mississippi River, Alec Soth's "Sleeping by the Mississippi" captures America's iconic yet oft-neglected "third coast". Soth's richly descriptive, large-format color photographs present an eclectic mix of individuals, landscapes, and interiors. Sensuous in detail and raw in subject, "Sleeping by the Mississippi" elicits a consistent mood of loneliness, longing, and reverie. "In the book's 46 ruthlessly edited pictures," writes Anne Wilkes Tucker, "Soth alludes to illness, procreation, race, crime, learning, art, music, death, religion, redemption, politics, and cheap sex". Like Robert Frank's classic "The Americans", it merges a documentary style with a poetic sensibility. The Mississippi is less the subject of the book than its organizing structure. Not bound by a rigid concept or ideology, the series is created out of a quintessentially American spirit of wanderlust". A pristine copy of the 2004 first Steidl printing featuring a detail from the image "Cape Girardeau, Missouri" on the front cover (cited on page 50 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume II", page 58 of "From Fair to Fine: 20th Century Photography Books That Matter" and page 41 of "From Fair to Fine 3") BOLDLY SIGNED by Alec Soth in black marker on the title page. First Edition/First Printing. 16 pages. Artist Books. One of a very limited number of the Slipcased Set, which includes all of the four variants. Each book is accompanied by one tipped-in, original print by the photographers (hence the Series' name) . An elegant production by Chris Pichler: Small-size volume format. Titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Eduardo del Valle and Mirta Gomez. Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents the photographers' stunningly beautiful and moving documentation, as aptly captured by the title, of the effects of seasonal and linear time on a single structure in Labna, Yucatan over several years. Todd Hido photographed a house in "Taft Street" over four seasons, showing the moody character of the changing of seasons. What Eduardo del Valle and Mirta Gomez have photographed is flux, showing ruin and survival at the same time. The Cuban-born husband and wife team has worked collaboratively for thirty years, receiving international acclaim for their photographs of subjects in a state of flux. They are recipients of Guggenheim, Cintas, and NEA fellowships in photography. Their work has been widely exhibited in the United States and abroad, and is in the Permanent Collections of The Museum of Modern Art New York, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and The Brooklyn Museum. The great photographer Lewis Baltz, who is best-known for his desolate urban landscape work, once referred to the work of photographers like Hamish Fulton, Paul Hill, Capability Brown, Humphrey Repton, and Richard Long as "land artists", photographers who have a genuine connection with the land in a way that their predecessors (like Ansel Adams) did not. These are very different artist/photographers but what unites them all is a love of the land and its structures, whose primary characteristics are flux, change, metamorphosis, and ultimately, evolution (in the artistic sense) . Ansel Adams sought to capture majesty through breathtaking photographs of scenic landscapes and stunning landmarks. What is uniquely and profoundly moving about the "land artists" is a search not for static and immutable Essences but for Reality in all its concreteness, ruin, and beauty. They do not take pretty pictures; they take beautifully honest pictures. Worthy "land artists" in this great tradition, this is a "must-have" title for Eduardo del Valle and Mirta Gomez collectors. This is an Artist Proof of the Slipcased Set, is indicated as such ("A/P") , and is very prominently and beautifully signed in pencil on the Back Limitation Page of each book by Eduardo Del Valle and Mirta Gomez. It comes with four original color prints. This title is now highly collectible. As far as we know, this is the only Artist Proof set available online and has no flaws, pristine beauties. A rare signed set thus. 4 color plates (in each book) , 4 original prints (in the set) . Two of the finest living American artist/photographers. A flawless collectible set. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now very scarce. A brilliant production by HDR Visual Communication: Oversize-volume format. Black hard boards with pale gray titles on cover and spine, as issued. Selected, edited, written, and directed by Martin Parr and Gerry Badger. Photographs by Ian Bavington Jones. Supplemented with archival materials from various sources. Notes, Selected Bibliography, and invaluable Index appended at the end. Printed on thick coated stock paper in the United Kingdom to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ, which is a dazzling collage of selected photobook DJ's, with white and gray titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents the first volume of the most comprehensive history of the photobook, the catchy name the authors have given to the photography book. "While for some photographers the single print is considered the ultimate expression of their work, for many others, the photobook is the most important and accessible vehicle for the widespread communication of their vision" (Publisher's blurb) . As such, Martin Parr and Gerry Badger have not only delivered a long-overdue reference guide but a refreshing, new perspective on the history of photography itself. More than 200 of the greatest photography books are discussed in Volume One as singular achievements and in the larger context of the medium's evolution and history. "All histories are of course subjective. What we have done is to try and start this project without preconceptions. No book or photographer has been automatically included just because the official history dictates it; many key figures have been excluded. And we've omitted a number of great photographers because they've never made a great book". At the same time: "We have gone out of our way to be inclusive, welcoming books from countries beyond the usual European-American axis, which are normally overlooked in other histories" (Martin Parr and Gerry Badger) . A brilliant attempt to establish an authentic photographic canon, this is a provocative, riveting, and indispensable "must-have" title. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the half-title page by both Martin Parr and Gerry Badger. This title has become as collectible as the photobooks in it. Presents the second and concluding volume of the most comprehensive history of the photobook, the catchy name the authors have given to the photography book. "Brings the fully illustrated history of the photobook fully up-to-date. Featuring over 200 photobooks, this lush survey offers a fresh approach to photographic history and is a celebration of the medium's diversity. Broadly thematic in structure, each chapter features an introductory essay followed by detailed discussion of the individual photobooks alongside images of the book covers and spreads. While the first volume stressed the subjective nature of the history of the medium and how that history was molded by the influences of curators and historians, the second volume brings a new perspective from the viewpoint of the photographer and the editor. A secret web of influences and inter-connections between photographers and photographic movements around the world is revealed, producing a global network of ideas" (Martin Parr and Gerry Badger) . "The most important contribution to the field since modern histories of photography began to appear in the early twentieth century. It dwarfs previous publications in both its scope and the information it provides" (Photoeye) . A brilliant attempt to establish an authentic photographic canon, this is a provocative, riveting, and indispensable "must-have" title. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the half-title page by both Martin Parr and Gerry Badger. This title is now as collectible as the photobooks in it. As far as we know, this is the only such double-signed copy of the First Edition available online and has absolutely no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. Hundreds of plates. Two of the most important and influential living photography figures. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER MARTIN PARR AND GERRY BADGER TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0714844330.

Translated from the Japanese by Jay Rubin, Takashima Professor of Japanese Humanities at Harvard University and author of Haruki Murakami and the Music of Words, "Sleep" was originally published in the New Yorker and recently adapted for the stage by Complicite, the London-based theater group, and the Setagaya Public Theater of Japan. Considered by many to be Japan's most popular and influential author, Murakami tells the story of a woman who ignores conventional wisdom by embracing more than two weeks of sleeplessness (with the aid of Anna Karenina). Composed in Dante types by Michael and Winifred Bixler of Skaneateles, New York, the fifty-six pages of Sleep have been printed at Kat Ran Press on handmade Twinrocker papers. The four etchings by John Gibson, whose paintings may be seen at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Museum at the Rhode Island School of Design (among others), have been printed by Peter Pettengill and his exemplary staff at Wingate Studio in Hinsdale, New Hampshire. The entire edition has been carefully bound in full leather and boxed by Claudia Cohen at her Seattle, Washington, bindery." ~ from the publisher Image or additional images available upon request
