        JOSEPH SZABO: TEENAGE

(SZABO, JOSEPH). Szabo, Joseph. Introduction by Cameron Crowe. JOSEPH SZABO: TEENAGE. Los Angeles: Greybull Press, 2003. First Edition. Square 4to. Pictorial Boards. Photography Monograph. Very Good/No Jacket - As Issued. np (168pp), profusely illustrated in b&w. Designed by Lorraine Wild. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. Joseph Szabo's seldom-seen first book "Almost Grown" has become a photographic cult classic. An inspiration for the look of Sofia Coppola's "The Virgin Suicides", its matter-of-fact snaps of seventies Long Island teenagers captured at school and the beach are keenly telling of that time in our lives when social acceptance and what clothes we wore meant nearly everything. In "Teenage", his first anthology of work since 1978, here again are the students of Malverne High School (where Szabo taught photography from 1972 to 1999) along with a charming introduction by director Cameron Crowe, whose teens of "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" occupied a fictional, yet parallel universe. The photographer's intimacy with these kids is uncanny - he still seems like a fly on the wall even when his subjects are staring straight into the lens. A handsome example showing just a bit of overall wear and handling. Maureen O'Hara Ure: "What an extraordinary gift, the time to travel alone in the winter in Italy, drawing 10 hours a day those three weeks in Rome and Florence, Siena and Venice. Returning to my studio, I set out using the stronger fragments from my sketchbooks to build a series of black and white paintings on panel. During this phase, Katharine Cole and I met frequently to discuss our works-in-progress, particularly her drafts of the piece which appears here as the title poem. Before turning the pages over to the binder, I watercolored 15 of the books."

Grosses Handbuch der Chinesischen Phytotherapie, Akupunktur und Diätetik (Gebundene Ausgabe)von Stefan Englert (Autor)

Verlag f. Ganzheitl. Med., 2003. 2003. Hardcover. Good. 31 x 22,4 x 4,4 cm. Depression Dog. Illustrated by Jim Lee, Henrik Drescher, Peter Sis, David McLimans.

The Perishable Press, Mount Horeb, WI 2003 - One of 107 copies, this copy one of nine hors commerce copies, so inscribed by the printer / publisher, Walter Hamady, in pencil on the front flyleaf and, although not called for in the colophon, it is signed by the artist, the late David McLimans, below his double-page image. The text of each copy in the edition is on five different mouldmade papers. Page size: 10-1/2 x 7-1/4 inches, 44pp. Bound by Walter Hamady and Scott Kellar: tan cloth with darker tan printed design of dog's head that is used as a backdrop - with stunning effect - for some of the printed pages. This is the 128th volume from The Perishable Press and the 11th collaboration of the author and printer. Taken from an as yet unpublished novel by Toby Olson, this text will appear as Chapters Four and Ten. The story's narrator is the "depression dog" of the title and the images certainly have elements of the narrator as well as the bleak American rural landscape of the Great Depression. The printer tells us that "the author's 'segmented looping' shown in his book, READING, became the aegis- engine and raison d'etre of this one." The ten images were hand-printed from unmounted eleven-point dies. The printer used five typefaces hand- set in five sizes and imprinted on/into five differing mouldmade papers, four German, one French, in several colors. A haunting book, beautifully made, and a joy to read and savor. Selected as one of "Fifty Books of the Year" 2003 AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Art, New York City).         Perfect

San Francisco, California:: Gustavo Ramos Rivera,, c 2003.. One-of-a-Kind. 7 x 7"; 14 pages. Double-sided accordion structure. Images and text employ ink, colored pencil, paint, and pastels. Green paper-covered boards with matching raffia ties. Roberto Trujillo, "Unique and Limited-Edition Artists' Books" in Gustavo Ramos Rivera (2006), the first comprehensive catalogue of the artists' work: "This series of unique books was first created by Ramos Rivera in 2003. Using the traditional codex format, Ramos Rivera begins many of these books with long strips of colored construction paper, to which he adds ink and colored pencil drawings, painted and pastel images, and collage element that include pieces of printed papers with stamped or written lines of text. On the covers, which are fabricated by Kathryn Kain, Ramos Rivera adds hand-stamped or hand-written title with drawing and bits of collage." With child-like drawing and snippets of text Perfect juggles grand questions across its pages. In "a world dreams invented but no one should own … is there anything more perfect than fresh water & song?" "What do animals & things know that philosophers don't?" "How come poets are unhappy if they only play with words?" (As if he had to ask.)

        East Broadway Breakdown

Berlin: Holzwarth Publications, 2003. Fine in white wrappers, black dust jacket, card enclosure.. Deluxe Edition. Quarto in special box. Number 134 of 160 copies issued with an original black and white photograph, 4 X 6 inches, SIGNED, stamped, and dated. The book itself is neither signed nor numbered, but bears the publisher's "special edition" stamp, and is housed in a drop back cardboard box created for this edition, as issued. Each photograph in the deluxe edition corresponds to a different page in the book, so no copy is the same. Furthermore, the original photographic portfolio of East Broadway Breakdown was executed in an edition of only four copies, so these books likely provide the only opportunity to acquire an original Christopher Wool photograph from this series. East Broadway Breakdown is Wool's mid-90s paean to the Lower East Side, and certainly ranks as one of the greatest New York photobooks of all-time, despite its relative obscurity. That Wool's photography has been almost completely overshadowed by his painting only adds to the the mystique of these relentlessly romantic images, hidden behind the bleak and grainy nightscape of a still rundown New York. No American photographer better exemplifies the greatness of the Japanese ideal than Christopher Wool; it has gone largely unnoticed that Wool is the natural heir to the Provoke school - the American Moriyama.

DON VAN VLIET: RIDING SOME KIND OF UNUSUAL SKULL SLEIGH - DELUXE SLIPCASED EDITION WITH A SIGNED ETCHING

(VAN VLIET, DON aka CAPTAIN BEEFHEART) (CORBIJN, ANTON). Van Vliet, Don, Jan Van Vliet, Anton Corbijn & Ben Watson. DON VAN VLIET: RIDING SOME KIND OF UNUSUAL SKULL SLEIGH - DELUXE SLIPCASED EDITION WITH A SIGNED ETCHING. Signed by the Artist - with an Etching. Los Angeles: Artist Ink Editions, 2003. First Edition 1/1500 Deluxe. 4to. Linen Over Boards, Slipcased. Artist Monograph. As New/No Jackets - As Issued. 88 + 96pp, 1 audio CD + 1 DVD, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Designed by Tim Eames. "Don Van Vliet aka Captain Beefheart was a visual artist before he was a musician. As a young child he drew serious accolades for his animal sculptures and was offered a scholarship to study in Europe. His parents declined; and while continuing to create in the visual medium, he turned his attention to music, within ten years forming the first incarnation of the legendary experimental outfit Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band. The following fifteen years are music history. But in 1983 Van Vliet retired from music to pursue painting and drawing, the focus of this extraordinary boxed set. "Riding Some Kind Of Unusual Skull Sleigh" (named after a painting the artist completed in 1987) provides an opportunity to own one of his original, signed color etchings. Executed on paper and cataloged as "Untitled (Self-Portrait)", the work measures 6 5/8 x 9 1/2". The paper itself measures 7 7/8 x 10 1/2". Van Vliet produced only 1,500 copies of the piece, one for each individually numbered copy of this Artist Ink Edition. A deluxe 9 1/4 x 12 3/4 x 2 3/4" slipcase carefully houses the etching as well as two museum-quality books, a CD, and a DVD. The first book, entitled "Riding Some Kind Of Unusual Skull Sleigh" (88 pages), is a monograph of sorts, containing an essay by art historian Ben Watson and full-color reproductions of sixty of Van Vliet's paintings and drawings - some of them previously unpublished. The second book, entitled "Splinters" (96 pages), features portrait photos of the artist by Anton Corbijn, along with a selection of personal archival material supplied by Don and Jan Van Vliet - including family snapshots, newspaper clippings, drawings, and sketches. None of this material has heretofore been seen. The CD features the artist reading eleven of his previously unreleased spoken-word pieces spanning 1977-1999, which are also reprinted in the Splinters book. The DVD features "Some YoYo Stuff", a 1994 filmed observation by Anton Corbijn. "Riding Some Kind Of Unusual Skull Sleigh is available only as an individually numbered limited edition of 1,500 copies". A pristine example of this remarkable package, now out of print, still sealed in the publisher's original shipping carton.         Requiem for Dionysos

San Francisco:: Art Hazelwood,, 2003.. Edition of 20. 24 x 19" closed, 24 x 90" extended; 7 pages. Accordion fold .A continuous image print assembled from five mixed linocut and woodcut prints bound together. Each of the five images was made with four separate plates measuring 24" x 18" printed on Rives BFK paper. Bound in red and cream paper covered boards. Signed and numbered by the artist on the title page. Edition of 20: copies 1 -10 bound as accordion fold book format; 11 - 20 unbound. Hazelwood and his work stand proudly and boldly in the tradition of artist as social critic. Requiem for Dionysus addresses the US's early response to 9/11. Taking inspiration from Euripides' The Bacchae, this accordion of large vibrant images comments on the folly of US policy. Art Hazelwood: "Requiem for Dionysos is inspired by Euripides' play The Bacchae and uses it as a launching point for a treatment of the current US war on terrorism. In the play the king of Thebes suspects a foreigner is inciting the people to madness and in his zeal for control he vows to uproot the evildoers. Like the current regime in the US the king believes the only logic the enemy understands is force. The king's own hubris in the end leads to the destruction of himself and his empire. "The five panels of the print are titled individually - Prophet, Tocsin, The King, Sanctimony and Requiem. A quote from The Bacchae accompanies each. While no attempt has been made to tell the story of The Bacchae in pictures the accompanying text does have resonance with the images. "In Prophet ?- 'I have come here from the east, veiling my godhead in human form' ?- a headless man holds a television with a screaming head inside. Our source of information ?- headless man. But the message of the text is ambivalent and points to several interpretations. The prophet is at once a metaphor for mass media and also a prophet like John the Baptist calling out for attention. And again 'veiling my godhead' suggests the secrecy of terrorism. "Tocsin carries the theme of torture and detention with the pointed message from the text: 'You are a man to make men fear. Fearful will be your end.' "In The King ?- 'Reports have been brought to me' ?- he listens to the news brought to him by victims and sycophants. He clutches the olive branch of peace in one hand and the bundle of sticks of fascism in the other. He exists in an armed camp surrounded by a fortress while his army carries out his missions. "In Sanctimony ?- 'This Bacchic arrogance encroaches on us like a rising tide' ?- three world religions bound together with a rope argue and point in opposite directions while a woman stands with head bowed pleading for help. Fighter Jets fly overhead. "In Requiem ?- 'I now cover your head, your torn and bloodstained limbs' ?- the results are seen. A stadium half destroyed stands as a metaphor for culture, while a violinist plays a tune for a half buried audience. This book was completed before the war in Iraq began but the ramifications of cultural destruction continue. "Dionysos the god of wine and joy is also the bearer of chaos and madness. He has two faces. Without him humanity is locked in a joyless life of drudgery. He reveals the depths of the soul through madness and ecstasy. Reason unrestrained by humility is madness. The irrational untethered to the ritual of tradition is chaos. Rationalism received its greatest impetus in Ancient Greece, but the limits of rationalism were also explored in the great literature of that period. In this print I have used the text of Euripides as a touchstone for our own battling dualities.

        Trout Fishing in America

2003. THIEBAUD, Wayne. Trout Fishing in America. By Richard Brautigan. Preface by Ron Loewinsohn. xxi, 98, [4] pp. With a photograph of the author by Edmund Shea and an original signed lithograph by Wayne Thiebaud. Small folio, 300 x 230 mm., bound in publisher's blue and grey cloth with black lettering and design. San Francisco: The Arion Press, 2003. |~||~||~||~| One of 400 copies, this being one of the 200 with the Wayne Thiebaud lithograph, which bears his signature on the facing page. A minor classic of counter-culture literature, Brautigan's "Novel" reads more like a book of poetry, using surreal prose to tell an American coming of age story. A simple yet effective production by the Arion Press, printed with Bookman type on Mohawk superfine paper. As new. The copies with the Thiebaud lithograph are very scarce.

WILLIAM T. VOLLMANN: RISING UP AND RISING DOWN - COMPLETE IN SEVEN SLIPCASED VOLUMES

(VOLLMANN, WILLIAM T.). Vollman, William T.. WILLIAM T. VOLLMANN: RISING UP AND RISING DOWN - COMPLETE IN SEVEN SLIPCASED VOLUMES. San Francisco, CA: McSweeney's Books, 2003. First Edition. Small 4to. Gilt-Stamped Cloth in Slipcase. Literary Monograph. Near Fine/No Jackets - As Issued. 282 + 332 + 558 + 496 + 340 + 624 + 672pp, no illustrations. "This massive, unprecedented book, begun in the early '80s and mostly completed by 1998 is nothing less than "a critique of terrorist, defensive, military, and police activity," along with an attempt to construct a moral calculus for the human use of violence. Focused on political violence - or force used to realign the ways in which power is distributed among and within groups and states - the book emerges out of several related questions that Vollmann answers with historical and ideological analysis, phenomenological and physical description, reportage and quotation: when do people use violence for political ends, how do they justify it, and at what scale do they undertake it given differing situations and ideas about them? Although Vollmann does not deal with the events of September 11th or their aftermath, the book could not be more timely, and, within certain limits, it is almost as successful as it is ambitious". A most handsome example of the uncommon 2003 first edition whose seven cloth and gilt-stamped volumes are still bright in the publisher's gilt-stamped buckram over boards slipcase showing a touch of light wear along with slight dents to three of its corners. It has been priced accordingly.       Portland, Maine:: Rebecca Goodale,, 2003.. Edition of 10. 5.5 x 11" with hand colored silkscreen prints. Two section binding with French folds and Japanese lace paper. Linda J. Docherty, exhibition catalog, 2004: "Goodale also uses words to place threatened and endangered species in relationship to other living things. In Beach Plum ... she describes a community of species that share a protected natural area, Beach Plum Farm, along the coast of Maine. Complementary colors - red and green, yellow and purple - visually reinforce this verbal image of a diverse yet balanced natural harmony. The final line alludes to the recurring cycle of the seasons and also to the imminence of change. When the 'old women who still make jelly' no longer come to harvest the beach plums, another tradition uniting humans and nature will be gone.

        Bud-Bloom-Burst

Santa Ynez, California:: Pamela Zwehl-Burke,, 2003.. Edition of 15. 6 x 5.5" closed; 28 pages. Horizontal accordion structure. 26 zinc etchings. Pamela Zwehl-Burke: "Etchings record the cycle of the rose providing images of the frowsy 'blown' beauty and the unpetalled rosehip to complement the more conventional bud and bloom...."This is in some ways a typical artist book in that it is without a text and it means to tell a story by a movement through a series or sequence of images….It means to be a meditation on aging."We tend to love roses when they are in their premature state. We are usually less interested in them as they begin to loosen and begin to lose their profile, as it were. Which is kind of true of other things in our world especially women moving from nubile to mature and post-mature. But the drawing of them is an extraordinary pleasure. Careful attention to them is enormously rewarding because there is beauty in the change of form that we ought probably to pay more attention rather than less attention.
