        Why Orwell Matters.

Basis Books, New York 2002 - First edition. Octavo, original boards. Signed by Christopher Hitchens on the title page. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Vanity Fair and Nation contributor Hitchens passionately defends a great writer from attacks by both right and left, though he also refutes those fans who proclaim his sainthood. George Orwell (1903-1950), a socialist who abhorred all forms of totalitarianism, was, as Hitchens points out, prescient about the "three great subjects of the twentieth century:" imperialism, fascism, and Stalinism. In all things, Orwell's feelings were every bit as visceral as intellectual, and Hitchens devotes some of his best writing to describing Orwell's first-hand experiences with empire in Burma. It was there that he learned to hate racism, bullying and exploitation of the lower classes. "Orwell can be read," notes Hitchens, "as one of the founders of. post-colonialism." Orwell's insights about fascism and Stalinism crystallized in Spain, while he was fighting in the Civil War. Hitchens offers an excellent analysis of the writer's women, both real (his wives) and fictional, to show that the feminist critique of Orwell (that he didn't like strong, brainy women) may be unfair, though Hitchens also points out what feminists have ignored: Orwell's "revulsion for birth control and abortion."         Ein Hamburger Ulysses [Ulysses in Hamburg] [ARTIST BOOK - Caroline Saltzwedel]; Achtzehn Radierungen von Caroline Saltzwedel nach dem Roman von James Joyce [Eighteen etchings by Caroline Saltzwedel after the novel by James Joyce]

Hirundo Press, Hamburg 2002 - No. 6 of 10 complete sets (plus 2 Artist's Proofs), total edition 25, Folio - over 12" to 15" tall, unbound sheets with 18 etchings, each numbered and signed by the artist, text in German (English translation provided). Caroline Saltzwedel, born in England, has lived in Hamburg since 1995 as a graphic artist and painter; in 1998 she founded the Hirundo Press for artists' books in small editions. Her works are in numerous public and private collections including the Bodleian Library, and are seldom available to private collectors who are not on the Hirundo Press subscription list. Caroline's works are often paired with original, new works of poetry or are based on mythological or other classical figures; this work was inspired by James Joyce. As the short preface to the work states, "One hundred years after the first Bloomsday, 16 June 1904, a present-day Leopold Bloom travels through the Hanseatic City of Hamburg and repeats the adventures related by James Joyce, which in their turn are an elaborate play upon Homer's 'Odyssey'. The scheme is the same as in 'Ulysses': one image per chapter, each with a visual footnote to the source. There are no answers, only cross-references." One of the grandest of Ms. Saltzwedel's creations, with eighteen full-page etchings, each numbered, titled, and signed by the artist in pencil. ***DESCRIPTION: This work opens with a concertina title page containing brief notes by the artist (five pages), followed by eighteen full-page, stunning, multi-colour etchings by the artist, each of the etchings are numbered "6/25" and are signed by the Artist, each etching is also titled by her, all in pencil. The images are approximately 7.75" by 11.75" on Rives Moulin de Gue paper that is approximately 11.25" by 15", and are loosely laid into the box; type is Gill Sans, monotype and hand-set. Edition of 25 copies (plus 2 Artist's Proof copies), of which numbers 1 to 10 are presented as a complete series in a Solander box with the concertina title page and notes, the box is covered in sky-blue linen cloth with white embossed lettering on the front and spine, interior is lined with white paper. The title page and notes are all printed in German, accompanying the work is an English translation provided by Ms. Saltzwedel printed on plain white paper. ***CONDITION: All components are fine, as new; all paper is clean and crisp, the colours on the images deep and true, the box without fault. ***PROVENANCE: From a private collector who acquired this work directly from Ms. Saltzwedel. ***POSTAGE: International customers please note that additional postage may apply, please inquire for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.       [London]: Ferret; Ferret; Privately Printed, [1980], [1994], 2002.. Large octavo, three volumes: pp. [i-v] vi 1-246, double columns; [i-ii] iii-iv 1-156, double columns; [1-4] 1-235 [236], double columns, boards. First editions. This private library catalogue is an essential source for information on nineteenth- and early twentieth-century science fiction and fantasy literature, especially British publications. In the first volume, approximately 3100 books are described with full bibliographical particulars, including identification "points" for Locke's personal copies plus other editions, printings, issues and states where relevant. Locke provides notes indicating thematic content of each title, a valuable feature for collectors of "forgotten fantasy" as his collection includes many of uncommon and/or obscure early works not recorded elsewhere in such detail. Thematic emphasis of the collection is interplanetary fiction to 1914, future war fiction, lost race fiction, utopian literature, and supernatural fiction (the latter of special interest as Locke identifies fantasy tales published in single author collections of mixed stories). The second volume includes additions to the collection (1980-1993) together with additional notes on titles covered in the first volume. The third (and George says final!) volume includes bibliographical details of new acquisitions (books, magazines, typescripts, manuscripts, artwork etc), plus numerous appendices, indices and other material, including an index by author, illustrator and title to all three volumes. A major reference tool for collectors and researchers interested in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century fantastic fiction. All three volumes have presentation inscriptions by Locke to a private collector on the front free endpapers. A fine set in fine dust jackets. (#155993)
