Zurich, Switzerland: Scalo Publishers, 2002. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/As New Dust Jacket.. Zurich, Switzerland: Scalo Publishers, 2002. Hardcover. As New/As New. First Edition/First Printing. 200 pages. Landmark collection of nude-cum-landscape color photographs. One of the greatest photography books of the decade. The First Hardcover Edition. Published in a very small and limited print run as a hardcover original only. The edition is now rare. A stunningly beautiful production by Bill Henson, Martin Jaeggi, and Walter Keller: Oversize-volume format in very wide oblong shape. Black cloth boards with black titles embossed on spine, as issued. Photographs by Bill Henson. Except for a brief coda, there is no text. Printed on thick coated stock paper by Steidl in Gottingen, Germany to absolutely the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Bill Henson's sequence of photographs of naked couples making love brilliantly juxtaposed with urban nighttime landscapes (the "lux"/light of the title refers to photography itself). The metaphor of night - for sex and intimacy as well as loneliness and desolation - endows the sequence with a "life-and-death" significance that is very rarely seen in photography. You will not restlessly flip through but carefully linger over each page (the book's design also makes sure that you do). The sequence (it is perfect) is poetic rather than "playful", which almost all other photography books are, and as such, its contemplative effect is truly powerful. "Bill Henson is a passionate and visionary explorer of twilight zones, of the ambiguous spaces that exist between day and night, nature and civilization, youth and adulthood, male and female. His photographs of landscapes at dusk, of the industrial No-Man's Land that lies on the outskirts of our cities, and of androgynous couples are painterly tableaux that continue the tradition of Romantic literature and painting in our post-Industrial Age. The rich chiaroscuro, the oscillating light, and the masterful composition of his photographs map enigmatic states that escape rationalism's iron grip, providing a much-needed antidote to a culture that increasingly loses itself in a numbing vortex of blinking screens and glittering surfaces" (Dennis Cooper). Bill Henson's work is in the Permanent Collections of the Bibliotheque Nationale Paris, the Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum New York, the Museum of Modern Art, and every major Australian museum. Henson has represented Australia (he still lives and works in Sydney) in prestigious international exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale. A "must-have" title for Bill Henson and contemporary art photography collectors. This title is now highly collectible. This is one of very few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and has absolutely no flaws, a pristine beauty. Most of the remaining copies available online were obviously read and have major flaws. A rare copy thus. 125 color plates. One of the greatest living artist/photographers. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER COPY OF THIS TITLE IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 3908247551.

Ancient to modern.& Heavy mass to lacy space.& Stone to steel.& & The Bridge moves.& Vertical to horizontal to diagonal,& joined in a dizzying dance by sweeping lines& inspired by natural grace.& & The Bridge defines.& Bold and practical. A vital invention.& An icon for the nation, built by dreamers.& & The Bridge endures.& She has seen it all.

(SAVILLE, JENNY) (LUCHFORD, GLEN). Saville, Jenny, Glen Luchford & Katherine Dunn. JENNY SAVILLE & GLEN LUCHFORD: CLOSED CONTACT. Beverly Hills, CA: Gagosian Gallery, 2002. First Edition. Folio. Printed Boards. Photography Monograph. Good +./No Jacket - As Issued. 48pp, 15 b&w and 14 color illustrations. Designed by David James Associates. With biographies, exhibition histories and bibliographies. This is the opulently printed hardbound catalogue produced in conjunction with the 2002 Gagosian Gallery Beverly Hills exhibition of collaborative photographs by Jenny Saville and Glen Luchford. Each of the images shown was produced by Saville distorting and/or flattening her naked body against a sheet of glass, with Luchford capturing the result on camera. Originally intended as studies for the artist's large format figurative paintings, they became a body of work unto themselves. "Closed Contact" reproduces these photographs on heavy, ultra-glossy paper, and they are accompanied by an essay by Katherine Dunn. A most presentable copy of this uncommon item (cited on pages 398-399 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book") whose contents and textblock are immaculate, but whose covers show some noticeable wear, soiling and scuffing along with some abrading to the bottom edge of the front board. It has been priced accordingly. (MORIYAMA, DAIDO). Moriyama, Daido. DAIDO MORIYAMA: MEMORIES OF A DOG - DELUXE SIGNED EDITION WITH A SIGNED PHOTOGRAPH. Signed by the Photographer - with a b&w Photograph. Tucson, AZ: Nazraeli Press, 2002. First Edition 1/50 Deluxe. 8vo. Cloth in Dust Jacket, Boxed. Photography Monograph. Fine/Fine. 192pp, 73 b&w illustrations. Text in English. "Daido Moriyama is without question one of Japan's most important contemporary photographers and it is not surprising that this memoir, first published as a series of essays in Asahi Camera twenty-one years ago, is regarded as a classic in photographic literature. In "Memories of a Dog", Moriyama approaches photography through language, and it is difficult to say which is the more evocative medium. His vividly expressive prose is in perfect harmony with the grainy, black and white images that in turn have a poetry all their own. As both reader and viewer one becomes completely absorbed, and photographs that will always be remarkable are given a new, very personal, layer of meaning. This is an eloquent autobiographical account of the artist's progress through life ". Limited to fifty copies only, this is from the deluxe edition that includes a signed and numbered copy of the book housed in a debossed black linen clamshell box along with a signed black and white photographic print. A most handsome copy. (PRINCE, RICHARD). Prince, Richard & Bruce Hainley. Foreword by Bernard Mendes Burgi, Beatrix Ruf & Gijs Van Tuyl. RICHARD PRINCE: PAINTINGS / PHOTOGRAPHS. Basel, SWITZERLAND & Ostfildern-Ruit, GERMANY: Museum fur Gegenwartskunst Basel & Hatje Cantz Publishers, 2002. First Edition. 4to. Printed Boards in Slipcase. Artist Monograph. Fine/No Jackets - As Issued. 180 + 192 + 30pp, profusely illustrated in color. Designed by Richard Prince + Kuhle and Mozer. Text in English and German. With an exhibition checklist, bibliography and exhibition history. "Silk Cut smokes, high-end pens and watches, jewelry dangling into cleavage, the Marlboro Man, the very young Brooke Shields in that movie still, bare-chested blondes on bikes - this is the stuff of Richard Prince's photographs. Sexist jokes, Playboy magazine cartoons, and graffitied doodles are the stuff of his paintings. Or rather, all of these icons of mass culture are the materials that Prince recycles and processes in order to make his own artworks. Re-photographed, fragmented, layered, and copied down, their original format irreversibly if subtly altered, they are transformed into works of high art. By appropriating a reality artificially staged by the media, Prince assesses and catalogues everyday life in America through the cool gaze of an archivist. Conceived of and designed by the artist himself, this large-format, two volume publication is the most ambitious presentation of Prince's work to date. One book is devoted to paintings, the other to photographs, and an accompanying booklet offers a radical essay by Bruce Hainley". "Richard Prince: Paintings / Photographs" is the comprehensive two volume hardbound catalogue accompanied by a text booklet published in conjunction with a massive 2002 touring European Museum exhibition. A most handsome copy in the publisher's printed cardboard slipcase still in shrinkwrap. Five Poems [Frameable Proof Sheets from the Limited Edition]

[Las Vegas]: [Rainmaker Editions]. [2002]. Proof sheets, consisting of two frameable leaves, from the limited edition of this collection of five poems by Morrison with illustrations by Kara Walker. Two leaves only: the first carries the third stanza of "Eve Remembering" and is blank on the verso; the second features Walker's art work, with the title page of "The Perfect Ease of Grain" on the verso. "Proof" in pencil in bottom margin. Slight corner crease to the leaf with text; else fine. A notable collaboration between two of the most highly regarded African-American women in their respective arts -- Morrison a Nobel Prize winner in Literature and Walker a visual artist using the silhouette as a form, who was the youngest recipient ever of a MacArthur grant when she received one in 1997 at the age of 28; she was selected by Time magazine in 2007 as one of the 100 most influential figures of our time The original silhouette for one of the images in this collaboration with Morrison sold at auction for over $30,000. The edition for which this is a proof sheet was limited to 425 copies; it seems safe to assume that far fewer proofs were done -- probably a tiny handful. . First Edition.

A Little Flora of Common Plants

London: Eagle Gallery. 2002. One of 12 copies, all on BKK Rives and Tosa Shoji paper, each signed and numbered by the artist. Page size: 11-7/8 inches x 7-3/8 inche; 78pp. All with 9 dry points by Jane Joseph, editioned by Marie Walker and 9 poems by Mel Gooding printed letterpress by Graham Bignell at New North Press on Tosa Shoji, set in Legacy Sans. Bound by Tracey Rowledge: handmade olive green Japanese paper over paper boards with title printed in silver on front cover, housed in publisher's white slipcase, fine.& The 9 dry points perfectly complement Gooding's verse. Joseph's images of common plants such as pussy willow, ragwort, bluebells, and the like are anything but prosaic. Rather she infuses her images with the dignity of all living things and finds beauty in the simple lines. Gooding's verse does the same - "Close garden cousin of wild 'nonscriptus' / 'washes' paler (but not less beautiful)..." - Garden Bluebell. For anyone who loves flowers and gardening, this book will have particular resonance.
See an Image.
Father Junipero

Rare and enriched by a 239 x 450 mm (9.41 x 17.72 inches) Calatrava presentation in pen & blue ink over the front endpapers with a line drawing on the left side showing a running girl portrayed from the side in the nude, a white dove flying above that she has just released, the girl running in the direction of the dove's flight, arms extended, hands open to the sky, the dove gathering thrust, its back feathers exposed, showing a human face in profile with facing eye open, the landscape a single undulating line extending across; the inscription-without recipient name-on the right side, sited New York City, dated Oct. 5, 2002, Calatrava's ebullient signature, personal above family name, wrapping in and around the armature of his printed name like a design for a harp-shaped single span bridge, last letters with long, rising ascenders, his characteristic end dot flourishes rendering them like music notation. Calatrava's winged steel and glass design for the transportation hub at the WTC was inspired by the idea of a child releasing a dove. This original drawing precedes his formal submission. July 31, 03, Port Authority of NY and NJ announced Calatrava was awarded the project: Jan. 22, 04, his designs were publicly released: Sept. 5, 05, Calatrava and daughter released 2 white doves on site, symbolizing the start of construction. The 200 ft. tall canopies of the roof, mimicking wings, are to open every year on Sept. 11. PUBLISHING NOTE: in English, text and illustrations by Calatrava, reputed to be his first illustrated book; the only edition, printed in an unstated but small number of examples, many retained for presentation by Calatrava. PAGINATION: Complete; pages not numbered, but confirmed as 31 leaves (62 pages) with 28 pages of text and 28 full-page color illustrations, reproduced from the original artist watercolors with charcoal, layout alternating 2 pages of text and 2 pages of illustration: 3 preliminary leaves including front endpaper, and half title page, verso with dedication and quotation from Luke 12.27, and first page of text and 27 leaves, the illustrated mission building narrative, leaf 29 with last page of text, verso with thumbnail biography of Fra Junípero Serra, leaf 30 on the origins of the book, noting its adaptation from a stained glass frieze design (done for a 1996 competition for a new Cathedral for the City of Los Angeles ) on the founding of the California missions, verso, publishing info. BACKGROUND: To win the design commission for the new St. Vibiana's Roman Catholic Cathedral in LA, the five finalists, Jose Rafael Moneo (winner of the commission), Calatrava, Frank Gehry, Thom Mayne and Robert Venturi were asked to design a shrine for the statue on Olivera St. of 18th century missionary, Father Junípero Serra. Those drawings have never been made public. The cathedral, damaged during the Northridge earthquake became the subject of a court battle between the Archdiocese who wanted to build a new Cathedral on site and preservationists who wanted the 1885 structure, one of the last remaining buildings from the early period of Los Angeles history, to remain. A 1996 compromise was forged: St. Vibiana became the property of the City and an adjacent site was provided for building the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. FRA JUNÍPERO SERRA [1713-1784]: A major figure in the founding of the Spanish territory that would became the State of California; born Miguel Serra y Abram in Majorca, he entered the reformist Alcantarine Franciscan order, taking the name, Junípero after St. Juniper. In 1749 he was given permission to join the Missionary College of San Fernando in Mexico. After assignment to Veracruz he requested and received a transfer to the Sierra Gordon Indian Missions in Querétaro. After the Jesuits' 1768 expulsion, he was appointed Superior in Baja California and in March 1768, he accompanied the expedition commanded by de Portola, Governor of Baja to convert and administer the Indian tribes of Altas California, and to explore and settle the territory, (in part, to thwart a possible territorial claim by Russia). After founding Misión San Fernando, Velicatá in the Baja, Serra left the expedition in San Diego to start Mission San Diego Alcalá, the first of 9 missions he founded in Altas (also, San Antonio, San Buenaventura, San Carlos, San Francisco de Assisi, San Gabriel, San Juan Capistrano, San Luis Obispo and Santa Clara). "Serra was ascetic and uncompromising in his zeal to convert the Indians and make his missions self sufficient" (U.S. National Statuary Hall) His life is well documented: many letters and his "Diario" from Loreto to San Diego survive. His work was continued by disciple, Fra Francisco Palou, who wrote the first biography of Serra, "Relación Histórica de la Vida del Fr. Junipero Serra" (1787). ADDITIONAL IMAGES: by request.
