Five Poems [Frameable Proof Sheets from the Limited Edition]

[Las Vegas]: [Rainmaker Editions]. [2002]. Proof sheets, consisting of two frameable leaves, from the limited edition of this collection of five poems by Morrison with illustrations by Kara Walker. Two leaves only: the first carries the third stanza of "Eve Remembering" and is blank on the verso; the second features Walker's art work, with the title page of "The Perfect Ease of Grain" on the verso. "Proof" in pencil in bottom margin. Slight corner crease to the leaf with text; else fine. A notable collaboration between two of the most highly regarded African-American women in their respective arts -- Morrison a Nobel Prize winner in Literature and Walker a visual artist using the silhouette as a form, who was the youngest recipient ever of a MacArthur grant when she received one in 1997 at the age of 28; she was selected by Time magazine in 2007 as one of the 100 most influential figures of our time The original silhouette for one of the images in this collaboration with Morrison sold at auction for over $30,000. The edition for which this is a proof sheet was limited to 425 copies; it seems safe to assume that far fewer proofs were done -- probably a tiny handful. . First Edition.

A Little Flora of Common Plants

London: Eagle Gallery. 2002. One of 12 copies, all on BKK Rives and Tosa Shoji paper, each signed and numbered by the artist. Page size: 11-7/8 inches x 7-3/8 inche; 78pp. All with 9 dry points by Jane Joseph, editioned by Marie Walker and 9 poems by Mel Gooding printed letterpress by Graham Bignell at New North Press on Tosa Shoji, set in Legacy Sans. Bound by Tracey Rowledge: handmade olive green Japanese paper over paper boards with title printed in silver on front cover, housed in publisher&#39;s white slipcase, fine.& The 9 dry points perfectly complement Gooding&#39;s verse. Joseph&#39;s images of common plants such as pussy willow, ragwort, bluebells, and the like are anything but prosaic. Rather she infuses her images with the dignity of all living things and finds beauty in the simple lines. Gooding&#39;s verse does the same - "Close garden cousin of wild &#39;nonscriptus&#39; / &#39;washes&#39; paler (but not less beautiful)..." - Garden Bluebell. For anyone who loves flowers and gardening, this book will have particular resonance. <br>See an <A HREF= http://www.bookrouter.com/im/juvelisbks/9313.jpg >Image.</A><br>

        Father Junipero

Rare and enriched by a 239 x 450 mm (9.41 x 17.72 inches) Calatrava presentation in pen & blue ink over the front endpapers with a line drawing on the left side showing a running girl portrayed from the side in the nude, a white dove flying above that she has just released, the girl running in the direction of the dove's flight, arms extended, hands open to the sky, the dove gathering thrust, its back feathers exposed, showing a human face in profile with facing eye open, the landscape a single undulating line extending across; the inscription-without recipient name-on the right side, sited New York City, dated Oct. 5, 2002, Calatrava's ebullient signature, personal above family name, wrapping in and around the armature of his printed name like a design for a harp-shaped single span bridge, last letters with long, rising ascenders, his characteristic end dot flourishes rendering them like music notation. Calatrava's winged steel and glass design for the transportation hub at the WTC was inspired by the idea of a child releasing a dove. This original drawing precedes his formal submission. July 31, 03, Port Authority of NY and NJ announced Calatrava was awarded the project: Jan. 22, 04, his designs were publicly released: Sept. 5, 05, Calatrava and daughter released 2 white doves on site, symbolizing the start of construction. The 200 ft. tall canopies of the roof, mimicking wings, are to open every year on Sept. 11. PUBLISHING NOTE: in English, text and illustrations by Calatrava, reputed to be his first illustrated book; the only edition, printed in an unstated but small number of examples, many retained for presentation by Calatrava. PAGINATION: Complete; pages not numbered, but confirmed as 31 leaves (62 pages) with 28 pages of text and 28 full-page color illustrations, reproduced from the original artist watercolors with charcoal, layout alternating 2 pages of text and 2 pages of illustration: 3 preliminary leaves including front endpaper, and half title page, verso with dedication and quotation from Luke 12.27, and first page of text and 27 leaves, the illustrated mission building narrative, leaf 29 with last page of text, verso with thumbnail biography of Fra Junípero Serra, leaf 30 on the origins of the book, noting its adaptation from a stained glass frieze design (done for a 1996 competition for a new Cathedral for the City of Los Angeles ) on the founding of the California missions, verso, publishing info. BACKGROUND: To win the design commission for the new St. Vibiana's Roman Catholic Cathedral in LA, the five finalists, Jose Rafael Moneo (winner of the commission), Calatrava, Frank Gehry, Thom Mayne and Robert Venturi were asked to design a shrine for the statue on Olivera St. of 18th century missionary, Father Junípero Serra. Those drawings have never been made public. The cathedral, damaged during the Northridge earthquake became the subject of a court battle between the Archdiocese who wanted to build a new Cathedral on site and preservationists who wanted the 1885 structure, one of the last remaining buildings from the early period of Los Angeles history, to remain. A 1996 compromise was forged: St. Vibiana became the property of the City and an adjacent site was provided for building the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. FRA JUNÍPERO SERRA [1713-1784]: A major figure in the founding of the Spanish territory that would became the State of California; born Miguel Serra y Abram in Majorca, he entered the reformist Alcantarine Franciscan order, taking the name, Junípero after St. Juniper. In 1749 he was given permission to join the Missionary College of San Fernando in Mexico. After assignment to Veracruz he requested and received a transfer to the Sierra Gordon Indian Missions in Querétaro. After the Jesuits' 1768 expulsion, he was appointed Superior in Baja California and in March 1768, he accompanied the expedition commanded by de Portola, Governor of Baja to convert and administer the Indian tribes of Altas California, and to explore and settle the territory, (in part, to thwart a possible territorial claim by Russia). After founding Misión San Fernando, Velicatá in the Baja, Serra left the expedition in San Diego to start Mission San Diego Alcalá, the first of 9 missions he founded in Altas (also, San Antonio, San Buenaventura, San Carlos, San Francisco de Assisi, San Gabriel, San Juan Capistrano, San Luis Obispo and Santa Clara). "Serra was ascetic and uncompromising in his zeal to convert the Indians and make his missions self sufficient" (U.S. National Statuary Hall) His life is well documented: many letters and his "Diario" from Loreto to San Diego survive. His work was continued by disciple, Fra Francisco Palou, who wrote the first biography of Serra, "Relación Histórica de la Vida del Fr. Junipero Serra" (1787). ADDITIONAL IMAGES: by request.

        Five Poems

[Las Vegas]: [Rainmaker Editions]. [2002]. Proof sheets, consisting of two frameable leaves, from the limited edition of this collection of five poems by Morrison with illustrations by Kara Walker. Two leaves only: the first carries the third stanza of "Eve Remembering" and is blank on the verso; the second features Walker&#39;s art work, with the title page of "The Perfect Ease of Grain" on the verso.

Vues de Venise. Mezzotints by Judith Rothchild

Verdigris Press Octon, France: Verdigris Press. 2002. One of 6 copies, from a total issue of 50, (8 with an original copper plate and additional mezzotint, 6 with an additional mezzotint, this copy, 36 regular copies) all on Hahnemuhle paper, this special copy with an additional mezzotint not in the regular edition, each signed and numbered by the artist, Judith Rothchild. Text in original French. This book, which is completely reversible has on one side a text on Venice by George Sand and on the other by Emile Zola, each with three Rothchild mezzotints of doorways, bridges and canals. Sand's delightful description of Venice in springtime forms a sharp contrast to Zola's grim portrayal of a decadent city in decay. Like the illustrations themselves, the texts provide a provocative study of contrasts. An extraordinarily beautiful book redolent with the eternal allure of Venice. See an Image.

        Bilboquet. Translated by John Crombie

[Paris]: Kickshaws Press. 2002. One of 220 copies of the first English edition. Hand set and hand printed in Nicolas Cochin by John Crombie who has translated the text from the original French. The title page is in black with the title in red and blue; each page is decorated with a colored ball and string, blue and pink, followed by green and pink, followed by a dark and lighter pink, the letterpress over the colorful balls and sticks and woven string tethers that snake around each page. Page size: 6-7/8 inches x 5 inches; 20 leaves. Bound by Antonio Perez-Noriega: simplified structure of red morocco, with onlays in pink suede in shape of a ball on front panel, title and author stamped in blue on onlay with blue dot in center of circle, blind-stamped line attached to circle representing string (the two elements of the game, bilboquet), the English title, "Cup and Ball" stamped in blue along blind-tooled string line; rear panel with pink suede onlay floating up to top edge (string of game) affixed to "cup" of game represented with blue suede onlay surrounded by pink suede with red dot stamped in circle of blue suede, blue suede guards with onlay of tan suede circle (the ball), matching slipcase and sleeve of blue paper over boards with 1/4 red calf at spine and edges stamped in blue with auther and title separated by gold dot, original white wrappers printed in red and blue bound in, signed on inside front turn-in with blind stamp "antonio / p.n.," fine. & John Crombie tells the reader that this is a translation of a story about bilboquet, better known in the Anglo-Saxon world as &#39;cup-and-ball&#39;, which swept Europe in the sixteenth century, being played alike in royal courts and on the streets. The game&#39;s purpose is to toss the (usually wooden) ball- suitably holed, and tethered to the peg by a string - into the air and catch it either on the spike at one end or in the cup at the other. The word itself, which denotes both the game and the plaything, derives from the French "bille," a marble or ball, and "bouquer" to thrust or impale, as with the horn or a "bouc" (he-goat). Charles Cros (1842-1888), French poet, humorous writer, and inventor, performed many early experiments with color, developing an early color photo process. Surely he would have been pleased with this colorful interpretation of his short story. This is a lovely book perfectly capturing the simplicity and joy of the game.& John Crombie&#39;s Kickshaws Press usually is based in Paris and is known for publishing small, witty, and extremely elegant books. This title reinforces that reputation. <br>See an <A HREF= http://www.bookrouter.com/im/juvelisbks/9664.jpg >Image.</A><br>

        PARIS + KLEIN

New York City, NY: Distributed Art Publishers (DAP) , 2002. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. New York City, NY: Distributed Art Publishers (DAP) , 2002. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 346 pages. Collection of photographs. One of the greatest photography books of our time. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. A brilliant production by William Klein: Oversize-volume format. Black hard boards with titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs and text by William Klein. Afterword by Anthony Lane. Printed on thick coated stock paper in Paris, France to the very highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Published on the occasion of the landmark exhibition in Paris in 2002. Presents William Klein&#39;s sixth and final "city" collection. The photographs by the expatriate American photographer, who is now in his 80&#39;s, represent a significant portion of a life lived in Paris. The first volume in his great Series, "Life Is Good And Good For You In New York", was also first published in Paris, and is now considered a classic. It was followed by "Rome", "Moscow", and "Tokyo" in quick succession, and upon his return to photography, "Torino &#39;90". "Paris + Klein" (the only one in which Klein added his name to the title) took much longer to produce and complete. William Klein said he wanted to do something different (but of course) and also somehow capture the city in all its rich diversity, that is, its often-overlooked earthy vitality as well as its exquisite beauty, William Klein&#39;s Paris (the city as paradox) rather than Eugene Atget&#39;s (the city as pathos). Although it would have been really odd if William Klein did not do a book on his adopted city, a collection of images on Paris has always been another challenge altogether, for him or any other photographer, because there is a whole shelf of great photography books on Paris. It is the most photographed city in the world, with images dating back to the inception of photography itself. The camera was invented there in 1839, and the French were the very first to accord photography the status of art, preceding London, New York, and Tokyo, the other great contemporary centers of photographic culture. Klein inaugurated a revolution in photography by breaking with the medium&#39;s taboos and traditions. He developed a radically new way to take pictures, perfecting his graphic design-based style by incorporating elements of black humor, social criticism, satire, reportage, cinema, literature, and poetry, thereby creating a unique look that has since been so widely copied by other artists, graphic designers, and photographers (without credit being given to its creator) it is now part of our collective photographic vocabulary. A "must-have" title for William Klein collectors. <b><i> This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in metallic-silver marker on the title page by William Klein. This title is now highly collectible. This is one of very few signed copies still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. A rare signed copy thus. </b></i> 241 color, 91 duotone plates. "Paris + Klein" was selected by The New Yorker Magazine as The Best Photography Book of the Year 2002. William Klein&#39;s "Life Is Good And Good For You In New York: Trance Witness Revels" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER WILLIAM KLEIN TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1891024698.
