Décret sur la translation des cendres de Voltaire à Sainte-Geneviève, précédé du Rapport fait par M. Gossin, au nom du Comité de Constitution, le 30 Mars 1791.[Paris], by order of the Assemblée Nationale, [1791]. 8vo. Modern red half morocco.

De Baecque, Glory and terror (2001; French ed. 1997), pp. 40-52; WorldCat (5 copies); not in Sudoc. Rare first edition of an official decree of the French Revolutionary government declaring that Voltaire "est digne de recevoir les honneurs décernés aux grands-hommes" (is worthy to receive the honours awarded to great men) and that his remains are therefore to be transferred from the Abbey of Sellières, first to the local parish church in Romilly-sur-Seine and then to the Basilica of St Geneviève in Paris. Three days after the present decree, the Assemblée Nationale ordered St Geneviève transformed into a secular temple of French genius, now the Panthéon, where Voltaire was buried alongside Descartes, Rousseau and many others. Finely bound in a simple and elegant style for and with the bookplate of Jankarel Gevers (1944-1998). In very good condition, with only some reinforcing in the fold and some very faint marginal stains, not approaching the text. The binding fine. A fascinating document of Voltaire's symbolic role in the French Revolution.

Lackner et al., eds., New terms for new ideas: Western knowledge ... in Late Imperial China (2001), pp. 306-307 & 322-326; WorldCat (9 copies). Rare first Chinese edition of Elements of analytical geometry and of the differential and integral calculus by the American mathematician Elias Loomis (1811-1889). The translation, nominally by the British Protestant missionary Alexander Wylie (1815-1887) but with much help from Li Shanlan (1811-1882), who was to become "the greatest Chinese mathematician of the 19th century" (O'Connor & Robertson), is a landmark in the introduction of Western mathematics into the Far East in general and China in particular, setting the stage for advances in Chinese technology. Wylie gives the English title in a heading as Algebraic geometry ... but in the text more correctly as Analytical geometry .... After the English-language preliminaries (1 page of text, a 5-page English-Chinese lexicon of technical terms and a 1-page table of Chinese names for Latin and Greek letters and mathematical symbols, all with the Chinese in both Chinese characters and transcribed in the Latin alphabet) and Chinese preliminaries, the book is divided into 18 numbered parts bound in 5 volumes.         Album with drawings and watercolours of Batavia].[Batavia, ca. 1850]. Oblong folio (25.5 x 33 cm). Album with 14 pencil drawings, 5 watercolours and 1 grisaille, all in a similar style. The first two watercolours inscribed "Batavia 1850 | Ernest Hardouin". Contemporary blind- and gold-blocked green morocco, gold-tooled turn-ins, watered silk endpapers, rebacked with original backstrip laid down.

      - On Hardouin: Bastin & Brommer, pp. 30-33 & 318-320; De Loos-Haaxman, De Franse schilder Ernest Hardouin in Batavia; Scalliet, "Beelden van Oost-Indië", in: Bulletin van het Rijksmuseum, 49 (2001), no. 4, pp. 371-372. Interesting album with pencil drawings and watercolours, by the French artist Ernest Hardouin. These drawings show various types of inhabitants of Batavia, capital of the Dutch East Indies, including several Javanese women, a European sailor and various members of the Chinese community. Other drawings, including sketches of what appear to be musketeers and a highly finished watercolour of a Greek brigand or klepht, have nothing to do with the Dutch East Indies but can perhaps be related to Hardouin's work for the theatre. His finished watercolours show a fine control of the medium and a wonderful eye for details, as can be seen in the watercolour of a standing Javanese woman and the fine batik on her kebaya and sarong.Ernest Alfred Hardouin (1820-1853), born in Versailles, arrived in Batavia in 1837 as a decor designer with the French theatre. After the dissolution of the theatre company in 1843, Hardouin chose to remain in Batavia, working as a painter, draughtsmen and decor designer until his death in 1853. In the early 1850s this "artist of genius" made a number of drawings "exuding a joyousness and spontaneous good humour often underlaid by serious social comment" (Bastin & Brommer), which were reproduced in W.L. Ritter's Java: tooneelen uit het leven (1854). Watercolours by Hardouin can be found in the collections of Leiden University and the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. With the album seller's ticket on flyleaf. First two leaves with some small restorations along the extremities; paper browned and slightly soiled in the margins, with a few spots; in good condition. Binding with a couple small restorations along the extremities and rebacked, otherwise good and still attractive.

Rubricated throughout with the blank spaces for initials left open. Including the last blank leaf. Modern calf in period style.

Nijhoff & Kronenberg 1217 (5 copies, incl. 2 lacking final blank); Tiele, Bibl. 480 note; USTC (9 copies, incl. the 5 in N & K); S.D. Westrem, Broader horizons: a study of Johannes Witte de Hese's Itinerarius and medieval travel narratives (2001). Rare third Deventer edition, in the original Latin, of a popular account of the fictitious travels supposedly made by one Johannes Witte de Hese, a cleric from the diocese of Utrecht in the Netherlands, often compared to the classic account of the travels of Sir John Mandeville. It was first published at Cologne ca. 1490, but Jacobus de Breda published the second edition at Deventer in 1497. Witte de Hese's travels start in Jerusalem in 1389 (in this edition actualized to 1489) when he departs for Egypt, observing many curiosities, including monstrous flying fish in the Red Sea, a hermit feeding on manna, and a unicorn detoxifying a stream poisoned by desert serpents. From Damietta, Egypt, he boards a ship to Ethiopia ("interior India"), meanwhile observing pygmies fighting against storks, one-eyed cannibals and a sea of sand, and he is briefly taken captive. Six weeks later he and his entourage arrive in Prester John's capital of Edissa, and marvel at his enormous palace. During their stay they visit the city of Hulna, with the Church of Saint Thomas, which is a four-day walk from Edissa. Before returning to Jerusalem, Witte de Hese spends more than a year roaming the remotest parts of the seas, during which he visits Purgatory and even catches a glimpse of Eden. The main text is followed by a treatise on the ten nations of Christianity, a letter from the putative sultan of Babylon "Joannes" -- here addressed to Pope Pius II (1458-1464) but actually written at least a century earlier --, a brief papal response to that letter, the popular 12th-century letter of Prester John and an account of his visit to Rome, and two geographical treatises on "India".Some spots on title-page and minor thumbing in the foot and right margins throughout, otherwise in very good condition.

Le miroir des plus belles courtisannes de ce temps. [Engraved title-page:] Miroir des plus belles courtisanes de ce temps. Spigel der alderschoonste courtisanen deses tyts. The loocking-glass of the fairest courtiers of these tymes.[Utrecht?, Crispijn de Passe the elder], 1630. Oblong small 4to (14 x 18.5 cm). With letterpress title-page in French, engraved title-page (plate size 11.2 x 15.1 cm) in French, Dutch and English and 40 unnumbered oval portraits (8 x 6 cm), 2 to each leaf, including (as usual in this edition) 1 repeat, each of the 40 with a 4-line French verse printed letterpress below. 17th-century limp sheepskin parchment. In a modern green morocco box with the spine faded to brown.

Colas 2288; Franken, Van de Passe, 1369, ed. I; Hiler p. 690 note; Hollstein XVI, p. 143 (Crispijn de Passe II, no. 183, ed. I); Veldman, Crispijn de Passe and his progeny (2001), pp. 297-299 (2 copies) and figs. 163 (engr. title) & 164 (2 numbered portraits from other ed.). Extremely rare first edition (in French) of a series of portraits of courtesans from France, the Dutch Republic, the Spanish Low Countries, England, Italy, Spain, Bohemia, Denmark, Poland, the German states and probably elsewhere, engraved by Crispijn de Passe the younger and published by his father. The majority of the "femmes de joye" (as the note to the reader calls them) are fashionably dressed ladies of the courts, but there are also servants and simply dressed Dutch women (from Purmerend and Wormer for example). Many show décolletage and one blatantly displays her bare breasts. Each portrait has the title (the courtesan's name or description) in the plate above and a four-line French verse printed letterpress below, giving further information about her. Many appear to be real people, some referred to only by their first names or initials. The verse sometimes adds enough information that a reader might have been able to identify or find them. A trilingual edition - French, Dutch and German - also appeared in 1630 using the same plates, but the portraits have had numbers added, some have had their titles revised and they appear in a different order. The content of the Dutch and German verses differs from that of the French ones, so none is directly translated from another. With an early owner's inscription at the head of the letterpress title-page, an early manuscript note in English on the back cover, and modern engraved armorial book plates of John Harrison and Hermann Marx. In very good condition, with a marginal stain in last 7 plates (crossing the plate edge in 1, but not reaching the printed image) and a marginal tear repaired.

Alice Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There - Signed Limited edition Nr 33 of 48 with the Additional Prints

Oxfordshire: Inky Parrot Press, 2001 Book. Fine. Hardcover. First Edition, 2001, Very Good Condition: Green Leather Spine Discoloured, 8vo, 270 x 180 mm, 10½ x 7 inches, Hardcover Quarter Leather Original Publisher's Black Boards in Slipcase, 122 pp + 8 Prints in Blue Folder Limited Edition of 420 Copies; THE FIRST 48 COPIES HAVE AN ADDITIONAL SET OF PRINTS, as does this one. This is Nr 33 of the 48. Foreword about Franciszka Themerson's drawings by Jasia Reichardt. Afterword by Graham Ovenden, both have signed the book on the limitation page at rear of book. The book is typeset in Sabon by Charles Hall and printed litho by BAS Printers on Gardapat paper, bound by the Fine Bindery. Franciszka Themerson was born in Warsaw in 1907 into an artistic family. Her father, Jacob Weinles, was a painter of large-scale tragic-heroic scenes from the life of the Jewish community, her mother was a pianist. Her sister also became an artist. Franciszka first studied music at the Warsaw Academy of Music and then, from 1924 to 1931, painting and graphic design at Warsaw Academy of Fine Art. Franciszka's drawings of the post-war period, the middle to late 1940s, reveal the effect that the hostilities had had on her work. She explored a diverse range of styles while she sought her own personal way of artistic expression. The drawings for her Looking-Glass, for instance, are more controlled and precise than her looser but more biting illustrations for Jarry's Ubu Roi, first attempted only two years later. Looking-Glass has the studied inventiveness of line that one finds in the work of Paul Klee: Ubu Roi owes more to the political invective of Georg Grosz. Alice is portrayed in black line referring back directly to Tenniel's engravings, contrasting with the flat, two-dimensionality of the other characters in the story, printed in soft red or blue outline (to depict the red or white of the chess pieces). Unexpectedly, the hard, precise line and cross-hatching of Alice makes her appear softer and more vulnerable against the almost pastel hues of the other cast members. Although the drawings appear childlike, this deceptive simplicity is based on consummate draughtsmanship. The drawings are designed to complement the text, the perspective and viewpoint carefully chosen to fit and extend the page. Care has been taken in the design of the book and the presentation of the images. Alice climbs through the mirror from one page to emerge onto the next, an indulgence seldom recognised in Tenniel's early editions and even less often repeated since. The value of space has been recognised. Although avant-garde for their time, the drawings can now be seen as very much of their time. .

        Nelson Mandela Signed Photograph.

Photograph of Nelson Mandela sparring with Jerry Moloi, a professional featherweight, at Moloi's boxing gym in Orlando, Soweto. Boldly signed "N. Mandela, 10.2.2001." The photograph measures 8 inches by 10.5 inches. Double-matted and framed. The entire piece measures 15.25 inches by 18 inches. Rare and desirable. Nelson Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary and politician, who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the country's first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election. His government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid by tackling institutionalized racism and fostering racial reconciliation. In 1962, he was arrested for conspiring to overthrow the state and sentenced to life imprisonment in the Rivonia Trial. Mandela served 27 years in prison, initially on Robben Island, and later in Pollsmoor Prison and Victor Verster Prison. Amid growing domestic and international pressure, President F. W. de Klerk released him in 1990. Mandela and de Klerk negotiated an end to apartheid and organized the 1994 multiracial general election in which Mandela led the ANC to victory and became President. Mandela and deKlerk were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.

Taschen, 2001. 2001. Hardcover. 34,8 x 25,2 x 4,8 cm. OBLIQUE STRATEGIES: Over One Hundred Worthwhile Dilemmas

[London]: [Brian Eno and Peter Schmidt], 2001. Fifth edition. Very good. Original black box (4.25" x 3.25" x 1.75" approx.) with gilt titled lid housing [105] cards, each 2.75" x 3.75" approx. Complete. From an unnumbered edition inconsistently described as 1000 or 2500 copies. Fine. A handsome example. Fifth edition (2001) of this influential artists' publication offering a series of gnomic pronouncements intented as stimuli for rethinking one's creative "working situation." Schmidt, a German artist who also worked with Dieter Roth and David Toop, had been pursuing a project he called "Thoughts Behind The Thoughts," which was a forerunner of Oblique Strategies, when he and Eno first came in contact. Eno later wrote of Schmidt that he was pursuing the idea of "not doing the things that nobody had ever thought of not doing" [A YEAR WITH SWOLLEN APPENDICES, p. 178]. The cards challenge unconscious assumpions of the creative process, a representative example being the card "Do something boring." The set has been published in at least seven printed editions (each slightly updated and revised), and all are uncommon.
