Faksimile - Buch der Welt . Die sächsische Weltchronik. Faksimile und Kommentarband ( 2 Bde.).

4°, (31 x 22,5 cm) 330 originalgetreu faks. Seitenm 500 farb. Miniaturen., Faksimile: Ganzleder- Rindslederbd. m. 2 Messingschliessen. Kommentarband in OHLdr. Mit beiliegendem Wegweiserheft (30 S.)., Tadell. VERGRIFFEN! Exempl. 23 von 980 arab. Num. Exemplaren.

Les Jardins Disparus Illustrated by Judith Rothchild

Verdigris Octon, France: Verdigris. 2000. Limited Edition of 50 copies, Signed and numbered by author and illustrator. All copies on Hahnemulhe paper. Page size: 8 1/2 x 6 3/4". 12 pages. Rouanet's imaginative story about "Lost Gardens" is illustrated with eight original mezzotints by Judith Rothchild. Letterpress printed by Mark Lintott on an Albion press. Bound by Claude Vallin: leporello binding, tucked into a two-color screen-printed paper sleeve, with slipcase of same design; both by the artist, fine. This generous, quiet story begins with a group of fig-laden trees remind one of the "jardins disparus" (the lost garden); ambles through a liminal space of moths and snails and memory and sun; and ends imagining an elusive and transcendent field of green existing beyond time: "Une epaisseur des taillis, une sorte de verdure, encouragees par l'humidite cachee, se souviennent de l'eau et du jardin longtemps apres la mort des hommes" (a thickness of copses, a sort of green, encouraged by the concealed humidity, recalls to mind the water and the garden a long time after the death of man). Rothchild's faintly luminous mezzotints of snails evoke a world just emerging from the soil, as well as one existing beyond human time. The prehistoric beauty of even these most simple life forms evoke, according to the epigraph, "la Geometrie souveraine qui regit le monde" ("the sovereign geometry which rules the world").         A PORTRAIT OF SHUNKIN [SIGNED] Lbc

N Y: Limited Editions Club. Fine with no dust jacket. 2000. Hardcover. Art; FINE Binding; 10.5" x 14.75". ; 64 pages; limited edition of this work by Junichiro Tanizaki, pencil signed by artists Eikoh Hosoe and Shunkei Yahagi on the colophon page. This is number 228 of 300. This volume is bound in full pale pink silk with inset printed calligraphic title label to front cover. Volume is in excellent condition. This edition was designed, set in Monotype Centaur and printed by Michael and Winifred Bixler. Photogravure plates were made and printed by Jon Goodman from the original negatives of Eikoh Hosoe. Calligraphy is by Shunkei Yahagi. Jun'ichiro Tanizaki was a Japanese author, one of the major writers of modern Japanese literature, and perhaps the most popular Japanese novelist after Natsume Soseki. Some of his works present a rather shocking world of sexuality and destructive erotic obsessions; others, less sensational, subtly portray the dynamics of family life in the context of the rapid changes in 20th-century Japanese society. Frequently his stories are narrated in the context of a search for cultural identity in which constructions of "the West" and "Japanese tradition" are juxtaposed. The results are complex, ironic, demure, and provocative. Velvet-lined gray silk clamshell box with printed calligraphic label to front panel is in fine condition. Case measures approximately 10.5" x 14.75". Howard Hibbett is a translator and professor emeritus of Japanese literature at Harvard University. He held the Victor S. Thomas Professorship in Japanese Literature. Hibbett began his studies of Japanese as a sophomore at Harvard College 1942 before working as a language specialist for the US Army in 1942-46. After graduating from Harvard College in 1947, he went on to receive his Ph. D. , also from Harvard, in 1950. He taught at UCLA before returning to Harvard as a professor in 1958. He was Director of the Edwin O. Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies from 1985 through 1988. Seven Japanese Tales, published in 1963, helped introduce the English-speaking world to Jun'ichiro- Tanizaki and Japanese literature. His publications include studies and translations of Edo and modern literature. He is particularly known for his translations of Tanizaki and works on Japanese language teaching.         Steps to Answer

The Grenfell Press New York City: The Grenfell Press. 2000. One of 20 copies only, signed and numbered by the artist / author. Written, designed, and illustrated with original woodcuts by artist Sarah Plimpton. Page size: 11 x 7 1/2"; 24 pp. Bound: loose folios of Kochi paper gathered in a handmade pulp paper wrapper of pale sea green; custom made clamshell in green cloth by Claudia Cohen. Poem printed at The Grenfell Press in Centaur; title letterpressed on cover of wrapper, and on paper label on box spine. This is a work of simple elegance, almost Japanese in its restraint, and yet exuding a quiet warmth. The woodcut illustrations in pale green and brown work with ample negative space; these white spaces levitate Plimpton's gentle poem. The simple geometric shapes themselves recollect abstract expressionism, without ever feeling stark. The text reads: "You put your eye on top/ and left it there/ running on/ the black struck walls/ the night to run/ inbetween/ taking a breath to stop/ blind steps to answer/ walking back."         Lover Beloved (From the Masnovi) Translated by Zahra Partovi with Etchings by T. Kurahara

Vincent FitzGerald & Company New York: Vincent FitzGerald & Company. 2000. Signed limited edition, one of 50 copies, all on Apta Verge Royal paper by Richard de Bas, hand-numbered and signed in pencil by the artist, T. Kurahara and the translator, Zahra Partovi. Page size: 9-1/2 inches x 6- 1/2 inches; 27pp; + colophon, with four separate suites of etchings by T. Kurahara, each measuring 9-1/2 inches x 38 inches when unfolded (6 folded leaves). Each of the four suites is on paper etched on the reverse - one in gold, one in deep brown, one in lighter brown, and one in brick. These are laid into the bottom of the custom-made blue cloth clamshell box each of the inner trays lined with color-field etch in gold with brick line on brown and reddish-brown with brick line on red. The clamshell box is lettered in palladium gilt on the spine with the title. The book is bound in blue cloth by Zahra Partovi. The binding is a long stitch technique using only one piece of thread - a periwinkle blue, visible on the spine in five different lengths on top and bottom with title stamped in palladium gilt on front panel. There are four original etchings in the bound book as well as the suite. Again, these are color field etchings and the artists has interpreted this part of the MASNOVI by the times of day at which the tale is set: early morning, mid-day, dusk and evening with corresponding colors - moving from light pink to inky blue-lavenders. The text has been printed letterpress by Daniel Keleher at Wild Carrot Letterpress in Aldus by Hermann Zapf in black and in light gray for the Persian calligraphy by Zahra Partovi (from polymer plates). The two color printing is a masterpiece in itself with the moving English translation by Ms. Partovi above and below each line of Persian in gray of Ms. Partovi's Persian calligraphy. The title page is printed in red and black with the blue thread exposed and knotted in the gutter of the title page. Jerry Kelly has accomplished the calligraphy on the title page. The etchings were editioned at D2 Press by the artist. The moving text cannot be summarized but must be experienced - preferably in the profoundly beautiful setting of this book. It is an aesthetic experience to savor.

Included are three working samples of pages created by Ms. Moore to complement Corey Mesler's poems. The edition consisted of 176 numbered and lettered copies, each signed by the artist and poet: 100 copies in Hanemuhle Bugra paper wrappers, 50 copies in quarter-bound Japanese cloth over board with hand-coloring by the artist, Suzanne Moore, and 26 deluxe lettered copies, hand colored by Suzanne Moore and gilded, as well as a few Artist's Proof copies (this copy). Page size: 7-1/2 x 4-3/4 inches; 38pp. Bound by Donald Glaister in half-leather (grey Nigerian goatskin) with handmade intensely colored pastepapers by Ms. Moore. The spine is smooth with the title stamped in gold gilt in a designed pattern using the letters in the title, red and black headbands, brown endpapers, signed in blind on the inside back join by Donald Glaister. The leather and pastepaper copy of the book, together with one of the 100 copies of the edition, as well as the original lettering studies in paper folio are housed together in an elaborate full red morocco clamshell box with rounded spine, the title is a repeat - only larger - of the design on the spine of the book, red box decorated with rounded fillet in silver and grey on edge of front panel, onlays of a hand-colored letterpress print by Ms. Moore covered with Mylar in broken pattern forming rectangular band at foredge, box signed in blind by Donald Glaister with his signature gold dot and dated 2011. This elaborate and beautiful morocco box is housed in a red cloth clamshell box with printed paper label, title, author, and press in black, and hand-painted design by Suzanne Moore. The book contains 12 poems by Corey Mesler and paragrams created by Suzanne Moore to complement each of Corey Mesler's poems. Ms. Moore explains that working with a key concept from each poem, she invented letter-based designs that extend the feeling and content of each poem to where the line between visual and verbal begins to blur. Her work melds, weaves, and plays with visual and verbal messages in her lettering and painting. It is printed, engraved, and for these copies, hand colored in vivid tones with silver and gold gilt. The text was set in Monotype Fairbank Italic at the foundry of Michael and Winifred Bixler and printed letterpress by Terry Chouinard, who designed this beautiful book with Suzanne Moore. A wonderful assemblage - showing the artist working through a project. See an Image.
