ALBUM. Approximately 2000 items mounted on 91 plates. Oblong folio, 275 x 370 mm, bound in Nineteenth century calf-backed boards. NP. ND. |~||~||~||~| A fine example of a nineteenth century scrap album with almost 2000 images, most of which are hand-coloured. The subject matter ranges from natural history, costume, military, nautical, and genre scenes all neatly cut out and pasted down. The album is significant for the quality of the images selected by the compiler and the imaginative layout. Most such albums have been dismembered, so examples such as this of high quality are becoming increasingly hard to find.

        Dylan In Woodstock.

UK: Genesis Publications, 2000., 2000. SCARCE DELUXE ISSUE, SIGNED by Photographer Elliott Landy. No 72 of 100 such copies, bound in full brown suede and issued with a SIGNED PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINT. The regular copies were bound in quarter suede and issued without the print. The suede material employed in the binding matches the jacket which Bob Dylan wore for the cover shot of Nashville Skyline. Folio, illustrated with photographs throughout, contained in a handsome slipcase silk-screened with an additional image of Dylan. With accompanying text by Landy. A superb production. A fine, unused copy. Fully subscribed upon publication, this is a scarce book. Bob Dylan was among the first musicians to discover the sleepy Catskills town of Woodstock, a name later synonymous with the most famous rock festival ever. Dylan first visited as early as 1963, but it was after his 1966 motorcycle crash that he retreated to this upstate New York hideaway. Here, newly married and freed from the demands of touring which had so nearly killed him, he settled into a more relaxed pace, enjoying family life and making startling music. So began an extraordinary phase of his career, one whose astonishing creativity and air of mystery has always intrigued his fans, the period that spawned the legendary Basement Tapes, John Wesley Harding and Nashville Skyline albums. Elliott Landy was there to capture probably the most striking and intimate photographs of Bob Dylan ever taken, including the iconic cover shot for Nashville Skyline and numerous out-takes from that session, which featured shoots at several different locations including the local bakery. Elliott was invited to photograph Dylan at his home, and created unique informal images of his subject - seated at the piano, bouncing on a trampoline, playing guitar on a garden bench, sitting out on the porch, or just throwing out the trash in the back yard. Dylan's Woodstock musical partners The Band were also the subject of many photo sessions with Elliott, who took the remarkable images that graced their ground-breaking albums Music From Big Pink and The Band, as well as shots of The Band in and around their Woodstock house, named Big Pink - where the Basement Tapes sessions were recorded with Dylan. This book features the best of Elliott's shots of The Band, to accompany the legendary photographs of Dylan, which form the main content of the volume. Having initially relocated to Woodstock to recover, Dylan embraced the tranquil life the area offered him and settled upstate, both he and Landy not moving back to New York for another 4 years!

Mérida, Yucatan: Dante, (2000), but 2013. Limited edition. Softcover. Fine. Oblong folio, softcover, approximately 13 by 17 inches, including borders. Eight full color prints by Castro Pacheco: La Siesta (1992), Los Músicos (1979), Los Amantes (1992), Mujeres Platicando (1992), Mujer en Rojo (1979), Mujer en Blanco (1990), Mujer Recargada (1985), and La Cinta (1992), Text (on rear cover) is in Spanish. Each print is signed in pencil by the artist. One of 500 numbered copies signed by Castro, of which this is No. 342. Fernando Castro Pacheco was a noted Mayan artist, and is especially remembered for the huge "murals" of Mayan history which adorn the walls of the Governor's Palace in Mérida, Yucatan. While this title was obviously published in 2000, it is housed in a publishers box dated 2013, the date of the artist's death. We believe that, of the original 500 copies signed by the artist in 2000, the small number remaining unsold at his death were specially packaged by the publisher, The box is of brown wood and stout board, with an upper cover that slides in two side grooves. The cover is printed with the name of the author and the title, a notation (in Spanish) that the lithographs are signed, and the dates of the artist's life: 1918/2013. Laid in is a printed slip stating that the edition was limited to 500 copies. In fine condition.

STORIA DEL MEZZOGIORNO. 15 volumi in 19 tomi

T. E. Lawrence: Correspondence With Bernard and Charlotte Shaw, 1922-1935 #228 of 475 sets

Fordingbridge, Hampshire: Castle Hill Press, 2000. First and Limited edition. Hardcover. This limited edition set from Castle Hill Press publishes T. E. Lawrence's correspondence with George Bernard and Charlotte Shaw between 1922 and 1935. This four volume set is hand-numbered #228 of 475 sets issued, this set being bound in dark green cloth with front cover blind rules and decoration, gilt top edges and spine print, olive green endpapers, head and foot bands, and pale green dust jackets. These four volumes comprise the first volumes in the T.E. Lawrence Letters series published by Castle Hill Press, the premier editors and fine press publishers of material by and about T.E. Lawrence. Hailed by Lawrence scholars, "The publication by Jeremy Wilson of four expertly edited volumes of Lawrence's correspondence with Bernard and Charlotte Shaw has... dramatically enriched our knowledge of what Lawrence was thinking and doing from 1922 to 1935, and also arouses, in any objective reader, considerable sympathy for him." T.E. Lawrence (1888-1935) found fame as instigator, organizer, hero, and tragic figure of the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War, which he began as an eccentric junior intelligence officer and ended as "Lawrence of Arabia."  This time defined Lawrence with indelible experience and celebrity which he would spend the rest of his famously short life struggling to reconcile and reject, to recount and repress. Lawrence first met George Bernard (1856-1950) and Charlotte Payne-Townshend Shaw (1857-1943) in March 1922. This time found Lawrence in a state of nervous exhaustion following the First World War, his work on the post-war settlement, and writing and re-writing Seven Pillars of Wisdom. Thereafter, the Shaws played an integral role in Lawrence's literary and personal life. As testimony to the complex importance of the Shaws to Lawrence, by early 1923 Lawrence had enlisted in the Army under the name "Thomas Edward Shaw." Lawrence would use, and publish under, his assumed surname until his death in 1935. In George Bernard Shaw - "the unorthodox, testy, argumentative agent provocateur and gadfly of British life and conventions" - perhaps Lawrence recognized a man who, like himself, had created a role that had overtaken the man. In Charlotte Shaw, Lawrence found "a kind of alternate mother figure" and a lifelong correspondent and confidante. With her revulsion toward physical intimacy, Charlotte was perhaps uniquely suited to understand Lawrence's complex feelings of mortification over the infamous incident at Deraa. "Lawrence was more frank about himself with her than with anyone else..." For her part, "there was much about herself that Charlotte hid from her husband, including the sheer volume and intimacy of her correspondence with Lawrence... which shocked the normally imperturbable Shaw when he discovered it after her death." (Korda, p.657) The publisher states that Charlotte "preserved almost all the letters she had received [from Lawrence] - over 300, some very long" and she recovered several she had written to Lawrence. "The correspondence adds up to almost twice the total length of his letters to any other recipient... Lawrence's correspondence with the Shaws between 1922 and 1935 is the most significant series of his post-war letters to survive. It covers an extraordinary variety of topics and, for much of the time, the letters were so frequent that they provide something akin to a diary." This remarkable four-volume set is the only complete publication of these letters. The four volumes of this set were published between 2000 and 2009. Castle Hill press originally intended to issue a total of 702 sets of this edition, but ultimately issued only 475. Of these 475, 225 were bound thus. The set is in pristine, as-new condition. We find no previous ownership marks or blemishes of any kind. The dust jackets are protected in removable, archival quality clear covers.
