        Transience Book 38

Tucson, Arizona:: Beta Wehr,, 2000.. One-of-a-Kind. 7 x 6.5"; 16 pages. Crinkly pad pages. Found objects. Mixed media. Signed and dated by the artist. Laid in Ghirardelli Chocolate box with Baronie Belgian Chocolate pad protector. La dolce vita! In an impermanent world, the sweet life gives way. And while this book reminds us of that fact, it also encourages us to partake of the sweetness, perhaps at the same moment. Covered in the familiar crinkly (sort-of-corrugated) pads that top boxed assortments to protect the candies, this book retains the inviting aroma of chocolate. The pages depict images of such tray pads with found, rusted objects affixed to them - the simultaneous decay of life. The verso pages show the back stitching which secures the front object, and chocolate stains, reminding us that life is messy.

[Archive of Original Paintings and Art]

[Laurel, MD], (2000-2007). 28 works, ranging from 15” x 12 to 36” x 24, with most 24” x 20” approx. Various mediums, but most pencil, wood-burning pen, and poster paint on plywood. Generally very good or better. Willie Shepperson (1936-2014) was among the original students who on April 23rd, 1951 walked out of Robert Russa Moton High School in Farmville, Prince Edward County, VA to protest conditions there. While the walk-out was not originally intended to address “separate but equal” policies, this action is considered by many to mark the beginning of the school desegregation movement. And indeed, the lawsuit that grew out of Farmville strike, of which Shepperson was a named party, became one of the cases eventually folded into the landmark Brown vs. The Board of Education. The experience had a lasting influence on Shepperson. He went on to a long career as a beloved educator, and was active in local and regional politics. He regularly took part in interviews, panels, symposium, and the like regarding the Farmville protests, the Brown decision, school desegregation, and civil rights. And while he was known to be an avid photographer, unbeknown to perhaps all but those closest to him, towards the end of his life Sheeperson engaged in the creation of a small but striking body of art that boldly expressed his lifelong interests and concerns. These pieces were typically executed with inexpensive materials (plywood or other board, poster paints, store-bought frames) and are almost all African American in subject, whether entertainment (Cicely Tyson, Paul Robeson, Bob Marley, Ray Charles), political (Thurgood Marshall, Mary Bethune), biographical (Mrs. Rawlins, an influential grammar school teacher vividly described in essay penned by the artist and affixed to verso of her portrait), or educational (schoolhouses - below left, both). The artist would usually begin a piece by sketching in pencil, then used a wood-burning pen to carve the portrait into the wood. Pieces were then typically painted, often with textual additions, the wood-burned elements and incorporated frames lending the works an almost sculptural quality. It is unclear whether Shepperson ever intended these pieces for public display. They were apparently discarded by his estate and were brought to us by a scout who rescued them from disposal and dispersal. What is clear, however, is that these are the work of a talented and vibrant artist. His style mixes the brash colors and iconic subjects of Pop Art with the methods and materials of folk. The effect is one of a unique outsider artist utilizing themes of African American history and pride. A collection worthy of preservation and display.

A Bibliography of the Works of Samuel Johnson : treating his published works from the beginnings to 1984 / compiled by J. D. Fleeman. Vol.1, 1731-1759

Oxford : Clarendon Press, 2000. First Edition. Very good copy in the original gilt-blocked cloth. Spine bands and panel edges somewhat rubbed and dust-toned as with age. Remains quite well-preserved overall; tight, bright, clean and strong. Physical description: V1 ; xliv, 999p. ; 24cm. Notes: Volume 1. Includes index and bibliography. Summary: This bibliography by the distinguished Johnson scholar, the late J.D. Fleeman, records Johnson's literary output in chronological order, illuminating not only his multifarious writings but also the development of his career and reputation as a professional writer. It reveals the range of his work and the variety of his anonymous contributions (some of them first identified by Fleeman). Detailed analysis of the works examined sheds light on the practices of the 18th century book trade, and undentified editions, early and late, many of which are valuable and unjustly neglected. The bibliography also lists new editions up to 1984, the bicentenary of Johnson's death, charting the course of his posthumous literary reputation. Subject: Johnson, Samuel 1709-1784 - Bibliography. Dates covered: 1731-1759. Literary studies: 16th to 18th centuries ; Bibliographies, catalogues, discographies. British Isles ; English ; c 1700 to c 1800. LITERARY CRITICISM / Reference / Bibliographies & Indexes / European / English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh.

        ALBUM

ALBUM. Approximately 2000 items mounted on 91 plates. Oblong folio, 275 x 370 mm, bound in Nineteenth century calf-backed boards. NP. ND. |~||~||~||~| A fine example of a nineteenth century scrap album with almost 2000 images, most of which are hand-coloured. The subject matter ranges from natural history, costume, military, nautical, and genre scenes all neatly cut out and pasted down. The album is significant for the quality of the images selected by the compiler and the imaginative layout. Most such albums have been dismembered, so examples such as this of high quality are becoming increasingly hard to find.

        Dylan In Woodstock.

UK: Genesis Publications, 2000., 2000. SCARCE DELUXE ISSUE, SIGNED by Photographer Elliott Landy. No 72 of 100 such copies, bound in full brown suede and issued with a SIGNED PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINT. The regular copies were bound in quarter suede and issued without the print. The suede material employed in the binding matches the jacket which Bob Dylan wore for the cover shot of Nashville Skyline. Folio, illustrated with photographs throughout, contained in a handsome slipcase silk-screened with an additional image of Dylan. With accompanying text by Landy. A superb production. A fine, unused copy. Fully subscribed upon publication, this is a scarce book. Bob Dylan was among the first musicians to discover the sleepy Catskills town of Woodstock, a name later synonymous with the most famous rock festival ever. Dylan first visited as early as 1963, but it was after his 1966 motorcycle crash that he retreated to this upstate New York hideaway. Here, newly married and freed from the demands of touring which had so nearly killed him, he settled into a more relaxed pace, enjoying family life and making startling music. So began an extraordinary phase of his career, one whose astonishing creativity and air of mystery has always intrigued his fans, the period that spawned the legendary Basement Tapes, John Wesley Harding and Nashville Skyline albums. Elliott Landy was there to capture probably the most striking and intimate photographs of Bob Dylan ever taken, including the iconic cover shot for Nashville Skyline and numerous out-takes from that session, which featured shoots at several different locations including the local bakery. Elliott was invited to photograph Dylan at his home, and created unique informal images of his subject - seated at the piano, bouncing on a trampoline, playing guitar on a garden bench, sitting out on the porch, or just throwing out the trash in the back yard. Dylan's Woodstock musical partners The Band were also the subject of many photo sessions with Elliott, who took the remarkable images that graced their ground-breaking albums Music From Big Pink and The Band, as well as shots of The Band in and around their Woodstock house, named Big Pink - where the Basement Tapes sessions were recorded with Dylan. This book features the best of Elliott's shots of The Band, to accompany the legendary photographs of Dylan, which form the main content of the volume. Having initially relocated to Woodstock to recover, Dylan embraced the tranquil life the area offered him and settled upstate, both he and Landy not moving back to New York for another 4 years!

Imágenes del Arte: Images of Art

Mérida, Yucatan: Dante, (2000), but 2013. Limited edition. Softcover. Fine. Oblong folio, softcover, approximately 13 by 17 inches, including borders. Eight full color prints by Castro Pacheco: La Siesta (1992), Los Músicos (1979), Los Amantes (1992), Mujeres Platicando (1992), Mujer en Rojo (1979), Mujer en Blanco (1990), Mujer Recargada (1985), and La Cinta (1992), Text (on rear cover) is in Spanish. Each print is signed in pencil by the artist. One of 500 numbered copies signed by Castro, of which this is No. 342. Fernando Castro Pacheco was a noted Mayan artist, and is especially remembered for the huge "murals" of Mayan history which adorn the walls of the Governor's Palace in Mérida, Yucatan. While this title was obviously published in 2000, it is housed in a publishers box dated 2013, the date of the artist's death. We believe that, of the original 500 copies signed by the artist in 2000, the small number remaining unsold at his death were specially packaged by the publisher, The box is of brown wood and stout board, with an upper cover that slides in two side grooves. The cover is printed with the name of the author and the title, a notation (in Spanish) that the lithographs are signed, and the dates of the artist's life: 1918/2013. Laid in is a printed slip stating that the edition was limited to 500 copies. In fine condition.
