Norman Foster Works 4

A notable, pre-publication presentation copy inscribed by Norman Foster for the celebrated art critic and author, Robert Hughes who has written extensively on Foster (inscription dated June 10: book offered for sale October 30). There are 5 quotes in the text taken from Hughes' April 19, 1999 essay for Time Magazine, written in honor of Foster being named the 22nd recipient of the Pritzker Prize. Foster is among the most influential contemporary architects, known for his innovative and refined environmental building designs that further a practical vision of sustainable urbanism. The independently published volume 4 in English in the projected, definitive 6 volumes series and the second volume issued (following Works 1), printed on acid-free paper in Germany, design by Thomas Manss, with superb production values. PROVENANCE: One of several books and letters obtained from Robert Hughes' library. ASSOCIATION: Quotes from Hughes' essay are used as commentary at pp. 68, 339, 403, 463 and 479. Hughes contributed an essay on Foster's early years for "On Foster - Foster On" and has written often and memorably on his achievements. For example: "There are a few - a very few - other living visual artists who are able to create such structures, in which a marvelous complexity unfolds almost of its own inexorable will and nature from apparently simple premises which, once they are granted and enunciated, generate the form. The most readily apparent of them is the great architect Norman Foster" (Hughes writing on Richard Serra and summoning up the example of Foster. (The Guardian, 6/22/2005)) INSCRIPTION: Penned on 4 short lines on the half-title page in Foster's distinctive, simple, balanced script, "For Bob with much admiration Norman 6-10-04". CONDITION DETAIL: Pages: clean: bump at the foot of gutter rapidly lessens after preliminaries and continues in trace fashion to p. 150: contents foldout leaf with top margin triangular edge chip-text unaffected. Boards: Fine, lower board with 1 light rub. Jacket: clean and attractive, upper panel with top edge crease along half its length, .6 mm at its widest, lower panel with scour mark. Binding: Fine. FORMAT: Publisher's charcoal cloth boards and lettered, gray acetate jacket, transparent at the spine. SIZE: 320 x 247 mm (12.6 x 9.72 inches). PAGINATION: Confirmed complete; [4], preliminary pages, 563 pages, with rear documentation and index and profusely illustrated, including 3 gatefolds and many color illustrations, some double page. Designs include the Commerz Bank Headquarters in Frankfurt am Main, the World Port Centre in Rotterdam, the National Gallery of Scottish Art in Glasgow, the New German Parliament Building (Reichstag) in Berlin, and the addition to the Mendelsohn + Chermayeff House. In summary, an extensive illustrated overview of 32 buildings & projects from the 1990's, a decade that saw the full flowering of Foster's innovative designs for ecological buildings, many in Germany where his designs have been especially welcomed. The book is a joy to use. REFERENCE: Grove Dictionary of Art, "His buildings, particularly in their enclosing outer skin, possess a logical simplicity and extreme refinement". CODEX ARUNDEL (Fine 2 Volume Facsimile Edition W/leather Bound Case)

      Giunti. New. Hardcover.
Leonardo da Vinci. Il codice Arundel. [London, British Library, Arundel ms 263]

Florence: Giunti Barbèra, 1999. 34 x 48 cm, 2 vols, 156 plates (312 facs) , 480 pp.

This notebook is not a bound volume used by Leonardo, but was put together after his death from loose papers of various types and sizes. The first section was begun in Florence on 22 March 1508, but the remainder comes from different periods in Leonardo's life (1452-1519) , covering practically the whole of his career. Leonardo's first intention seems to have been to gather material for a treatise on mechanics, although his relentless curiosity led him into numerous other topics from the movement of water to the flight of birds. The text is written in Leonardo's characteristic 'mirror-writing', left-handed and moving from right to left. The MS was probably acquired in Italy by Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel (1586-1646) , hence its name today, "Codex Arundel". Limited edition, supplied with leather covered clamshell case for the facsimiles and text volume in full leather.
Our Promise to You: ALL OUR DUST JACKETS COME WITH CLEAR BRODART PROTECTIVE COVERS. Ethics for the New Millennium - 1st Edition/1st Printing

New York: Putnam Publishing Group. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 1999. First Edition; First Printing; Signed by Author. 1/4 Cloth. 1573220256 . An outstanding First Edition, First Printing in unread Fine condition in alike dust-jacket, SIGNED directly on the title page by His Holiness and Nobel Peace Prize winner, the Dalai Lama; Only during a time when we have so little faith in one another, so little confidence in the willingness of others to do what is right, can a strong voice emerge to dispel disillusionment and show us hope. It takes a person of great courage, such as the Dalai Lama, to face these times and say there is hope. There is an argument to be made for basic human goodness. The number of people who spend their lives being violent or dishonest is tiny compared with the number of people-the vast majority we don't hear about-who would wish others only well. According to the Dalai Lama, our survival has depended and will depend on our basic goodness. "Much more effective and important than legislation is our regard for one another's feelings at a simple human level -Here, I refer to the capacity we all have to empathize with one another- to arrive at the inability to bear the sight of another's suffering. " The Dalai Lama presents an ethical system that not only is based on common sense and reason, as opposed to religious dogma or punitive legislation, but has as its goal ultimate happiness for every individual .

THE BAD BEGINNING and THE REPTILE ROOM plus 'Magnets for Misfortune.'

New York: HarperCollins, (1999.) . Advance Reading Copy (trade paperback format. ) . Very near fine - a new and unread book, tight binding, no creases, but a little nick at the top of the spine and another at the upper corner (probably done in the publishing process, since these tiny nicks seem to be endemic to most otherwise fine copies). . An extremely uncommon ARC of the first two titles in the "Series of Unfortunate Events" by Lemony Snicket - THE BAD BEGINNING and THE REPTILE ROOM, bound dos-a-dos, (back to back) in glossy illustrated wrappers. SIGNED (sort of) by the author, with an embossed seal and the trademark handwritten comment 'with all due respect' surrounding the seal, and the date '3.X.2004. written inside the seal. First issue, with the misspelling of 'unfortuante' on the covers. Now that this was the basis of a movie starring Jim Carey, Meryl Streep and Jude Law, even those of you who don't have children in your lives are probably familiar with these books, but for those who might still be languishing uninformed, here is a bit of information: The Lemony Snicket books are possibly even more popular than the Potter books - and for good reason! The resemblance to Edward Gorey's works is not accidental - How could anyone not love a book which contains this 'letter to the reader' at the beginning: 'I am sorry to say that the book which you are holding in your hands is extremely unpleasant. It tells the unhappy tale of three very unlucky children. Even though they are charming and clever, the Baudelaire siblings lead lives filled with misery and woe. From the very first page of this book, when the children are at the beach and receive terrible news, continuing on through the entire story, disaster lurks at their heels. One might say they are magnets for misfortune./ In this short book alone, the three youngsters encounter a greedy and repulsive villain, itchy clothing, a disastrous fire, a plot to steal their fortune and cold porridge for breakfast. / It is my sad duty to write down these unpleasant tales, but there is nothing stopping you from putting this book down at once and reading something happy, if you prefer that sort of thing.' What adult would not enjoy the in-jokes of names like Sunny and Klaus (as in von Bulow) - or the fact that these books actually encourage children to learn from reading, as in this excerpt: 'But although Klaus had read books on outer-space exploration, ice-skating tricks, and good marriage methods, and not yet found much use for this information, he had learned a great deal of information that was about to become very useful indeed.' Or a beginning paragraph that includes a word like 'rife'? The vocabulary is wonderful in these books. As a well-publicized debut, this advance reading copy was presumably printed in relatively generous numbers - but very few are currently being offered for sale! Either all the booksellers who got copies of this are hoarding this treasure themselves or, horrors, actually GAVE them to children! However, not only are we willing to sell this ARC, we will even include the much more elusive ' Magnets for Misfortune' which was produced as part of this original publicity campaign (I have never seen any of these offered for sale). This is the first of the promotional magnet sets done by the publisher: it consists of a small sheet of words (5 3/4 by 4 inches, designed to be cut apart and use to create 'refrigerator poetry'' Still in the original sealed plastic bag with a slip announcing a poetry contest for children.

        Mandragora Volume 2

[NP]. 1999. Unique Artist's Book, 6 leaves plus pastedowns, page size: 7-5/16 inches x 5-1/2 inches, hand-lettered in white on hand-painted paper, blue ground with copper colored highlights. The middle page spread consists of shaped text block in Latin with image of purple and yellow crocus on left side and a male torso with roots instead of arms and legs and sprouting green leaves instead of a head. This page is bordered in gold gilt. On the penultimate page, lettered in white, as is the title page, which is also the colophon, is the text, "The mandrakes have / shed a fragrance: - in our hands are all / manner of delicious / fruits, newly gath- / ered as well as old." Bound by the artist, gessoed boards painted to resemble leather in terracotta with dark green geometric design, bordered in deep blue, spine gold gilt, fine. Mandragora, also known as Mandrake and Satan's Apple, is an herb that was the object of many superstitions. In old herbals it was often pictured as it is here, with the body of a man, as the roots fork into two and shoot out at each side. An homage to the ancient herbal brought up to date. See an Image.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

(London): Bloomsbury. (1999). The uncorrected proof copy of the third Harry Potter book. Inscribed by Rowling on the dedication page, where the printed text reads "? dedication" and has been circled by Rowling with an arrow pointing to her words: "To Thomas, with very best wishes, J.K. Rowling." She has also added an "X" under her name. After the third book, Bloomsbury did not issue prepublication proofs. This is the second issue of the Azkaban proof, in green and white wrappers, with 316 pages (although the rear cover states the pagination at 256 pages.) Reportedly there were only 50 copies of the first issue purple proof, and some greater number of the green proof, but the green proof doesn't appear to be any more common on the market. This copy has been read: handling in evidence on rear cover; spine creases; and corner creases to front cover. Very good in wrappers. Uncommon, and especially so signed. . First Edition. Softcover.
