EDEN

New York City, NY: Roth Horowitz LLC, 1999. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. New York City, NY: Roth Horowitz LLC, 1999. Hardcover. Fine/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. Unpaginated. Collection of landscape photographs. One of the greatest photography books of the 20th century. Deluxe Slipcased Edition of 50 numbered and signed copies. Published simultaneously but should not be confused with the Limited Edition of 1000 copies. One of the smallest limitations ever, the Deluxe Edition is now rare. The editions have the same ISBN. An austerely elegant production by Robert Adams, Jerry Kelly, and Andrew Roth: Regular-sized volume format. Black hard boards with titles embossed on the cover, as issued. Photographs by Robert Adams. Except for a very brief Introductory Note by Adams, there is no text. Printed in tritone on thick uncoated stock paper by the legendary Stinehour Press in the United States to the very highest standards. The reproductions have an immaculate beauty and purity that are both moving and breathtaking. Matching black hard board slipcase. Without DJ, as issued. Presents images of Eden, Colorado, which was named not after the Biblical place, but a former railroad official. The Garden of Mister Eden is made up of railroad tracks, gas tanks, metal sheds, military salvage lots, and the Westland Truck Stop, captured in "sunny-day" bright, starkly evocative photographs that implant themselves in one's mind. A photographer's photographer, Robert Adams has published indispensable books about the radical (and irreversible) transformation of the American West (his work is the inspiration for Richard Avedon's "In The American West") for more than forty years. A MacArthur Genius Grant laureate, one of very few photographers so honored, Adams is regarded by critics and admirers as the greatest American landscape photographer since Ansel Adams, with whom he ironically shares the same surname, and nothing else. Indeed, Robert Adams is the ultimate anti-Ansel Adams photographer, an artist who evokes our inner desolation and rejects Ansel's majesty and grandeur by exposing the detritus of modern civilization. The latter has done more to destroy both Nature and our natural connection to it than any other "development" in human history. This is a spare and perfect book by "the most restlessly and profoundly interesting American landscape photographer since Edward Weston" (Aperture Foundation). An absolute "must-have" title for Robert Adams collectors. This copy is one of the Deluxe Slipcased Edition, indicated as such on the Back Limitation Page, and it is very prominently and beautifully numbered and signed in black ink-pen by the photographer: "Robert Adams 24". This title sold out before publication and is now highly collectible. As far as we know, this is one of only two copies of the Deluxe Slipcased Edition still available online, is enclosed within protective plastic wrappers, and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 17 tritone plates. Robert Adams' "What We Bought: The New West" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest living American photographers. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ROBERT ADAMS TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1564660680.

Legacy : Selected Paintings and Drawings by the Grand Master of Fantastic Art Frank Frazetta - (FRAZETTA LEGACY/LEGEND - UNIQUE SUPER-DELUXE EDITION)

Grass Valley, CA: Underwood Books, 1999 FRAZETTA LEGACY/LEGEND - UNIQUE SUPER-DELUXE EDITION: Copy 103 of 120 of the DELUXE LEATHER-BOUND TRAY-CASED FIRST COLLECTOR'S EDITION of LEGACY, hand-stamped with Frank Frazetta's signature, autographed by the participants, and foil-embossed with the Frazetta family seal of authenticity, WITH a UNIQUE ARCHIVE containing both black and white and full-color slick-paper proof sheets, a variant Limitation Page, and two different dust wrappers (designed for use with the regular trade and the slip-cased editions) all bearing the original unused title of LEGEND. These, along with a mention in the published book, were a gift to me from the publisher, Tim Underwood, in appreciation of my proofreading this second set of proofs and checking original publication dates of books bearing Frazetta art and for suggesting LEGACY as the book's title, in lieu of the forgotten and unwieldy one which had just been substituted for the original preferred title of LEGEND, which it was found could not be safely used due to legal complications. The archive consists of a LEGEND Limitation Page, using the same illustration as the published one but noting an edition-size of 100 copies as opposed to the 120 actually issued under the LEGACY title, and 53 folded 12 x 18 inch proof sheets representing 106 pages in the finished book, with an additional 5 (cut) single proof pages, one of which is a half-title page, bearing the word LEGEND over a black and white drawing, and one of which is the title-page, bearing the full title, LEGEND/SELECTED DRAWINGS & PAINTINGS by/ FRANK FRAZETTA/Edited by ARNIE FENNER & CATHY FENNER. (LEGEND is printed on every page bearing the book's title.) Of these sheets, the one containing pages 198 and 199 show images designed for use in the Bonus Section of the Slip-Cased and the Deluxe Editions which, however, were jettisoned and not used anywhere. One is a sepia-toned page with a large pen and ink drawing of a leering demon with an unconscious nude over one shoulder, and the other is a color photo of an artist-unattributed diorama sculpture of KING KONG fighting a serpent. There are also present 211 Xeroxed 8 ½ by 11 inch pages of the book bearing notations, layout instructions, and emendations, among the latter of which is one noting that a reference involving HARLAN ELLISON is not only not germane, but possibly actionable, thus ensuring it was deleted from all published versions, and one page instructing that the name printed showing the owner of a Frazetta painting be deleted, which instructions I have followed. A hand-written signed short note on the publisher's letterhead is included, dated 9-25-99 and mentioning that the actual books will be ready in a few weeks. I have noted this archive as unique, based on an included letter from Augusta Cobar at Global Interprint, Inc. detailing that this set of "untrimmed second proofs" is being dispatched to Underwood on 6/25/99 and that "Hong Kong will take a few days to trim the other 2-3 sets" so even if any of those survived, which I very much doubt, they would differ in their being trimmed. The Xeroxed pages are pristine; the two dust wrappers and the slick proof pages show some creasing and wrinkling in places, due to usage as intended, but are still very attractive. The LEGACY finished book and traycase are pristine. This is an unprecedented opportunity to acquire a genuinely unique and important Frazetta item. . First Edition. Hardcover. As New/As New.

        Norman Foster Works 4

A notable, pre-publication presentation copy inscribed by Norman Foster for the celebrated art critic and author, Robert Hughes who has written extensively on Foster (inscription dated June 10: book offered for sale October 30). There are 5 quotes in the text taken from Hughes' April 19, 1999 essay for Time Magazine, written in honor of Foster being named the 22nd recipient of the Pritzker Prize. Foster is among the most influential contemporary architects, known for his innovative and refined environmental building designs that further a practical vision of sustainable urbanism. The independently published volume 4 in English in the projected, definitive 6 volumes series and the second volume issued (following Works 1), printed on acid-free paper in Germany, design by Thomas Manss, with superb production values. PROVENANCE: One of several books and letters obtained from Robert Hughes' library. ASSOCIATION: Quotes from Hughes' essay are used as commentary at pp. 68, 339, 403, 463 and 479. Hughes contributed an essay on Foster's early years for "On Foster - Foster On" and has written often and memorably on his achievements. For example: "There are a few - a very few - other living visual artists who are able to create such structures, in which a marvelous complexity unfolds almost of its own inexorable will and nature from apparently simple premises which, once they are granted and enunciated, generate the form. The most readily apparent of them is the great architect Norman Foster" (Hughes writing on Richard Serra and summoning up the example of Foster. (The Guardian, 6/22/2005)) INSCRIPTION: Penned on 4 short lines on the half-title page in Foster's distinctive, simple, balanced script, "For Bob with much admiration Norman 6-10-04". CONDITION DETAIL: Pages: clean: bump at the foot of gutter rapidly lessens after preliminaries and continues in trace fashion to p. 150: contents foldout leaf with top margin triangular edge chip-text unaffected. Boards: Fine, lower board with 1 light rub. Jacket: clean and attractive, upper panel with top edge crease along half its length, .6 mm at its widest, lower panel with scour mark. Binding: Fine. FORMAT: Publisher's charcoal cloth boards and lettered, gray acetate jacket, transparent at the spine. SIZE: 320 x 247 mm (12.6 x 9.72 inches). PAGINATION: Confirmed complete; [4], preliminary pages, 563 pages, with rear documentation and index and profusely illustrated, including 3 gatefolds and many color illustrations, some double page. Designs include the Commerz Bank Headquarters in Frankfurt am Main, the World Port Centre in Rotterdam, the National Gallery of Scottish Art in Glasgow, the New German Parliament Building (Reichstag) in Berlin, and the addition to the Mendelsohn + Chermayeff House. In summary, an extensive illustrated overview of 32 buildings & projects from the 1990's, a decade that saw the full flowering of Foster's innovative designs for ecological buildings, many in Germany where his designs have been especially welcomed. The book is a joy to use. REFERENCE: Grove Dictionary of Art, "His buildings, particularly in their enclosing outer skin, possess a logical simplicity and extreme refinement". ADDITIONAL IMAGES: by request.

CODEX ARUNDEL (Fine 2 Volume Facsimile Edition W/leather Bound Case)

      Giunti. New. Hardcover.
Leonardo da Vinci. Il codice Arundel. [London, British Library, Arundel ms 263]

Florence: Giunti Barbèra, 1999. 34 x 48 cm, 2 vols, 156 plates (312 facs) , 480 pp.

This notebook is not a bound volume used by Leonardo, but was put together after his death from loose papers of various types and sizes. The first section was begun in Florence on 22 March 1508, but the remainder comes from different periods in Leonardo's life (1452-1519) , covering practically the whole of his career. Leonardo's first intention seems to have been to gather material for a treatise on mechanics, although his relentless curiosity led him into numerous other topics from the movement of water to the flight of birds. The text is written in Leonardo's characteristic 'mirror-writing', left-handed and moving from right to left. The MS was probably acquired in Italy by Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel (1586-1646) , hence its name today, "Codex Arundel". Limited edition, supplied with leather covered clamshell case for the facsimiles and text volume in full leather.
Our Promise to You: ALL OUR DUST JACKETS COME WITH CLEAR BRODART PROTECTIVE COVERS. (Please read listing to determine if this book comes with a dust jacket.) Your order will be CAREFULLY PACKAGED IN A BOX for safe transition. We strive for 100% customer satisfaction! .

Ethics for the New Millennium - 1st Edition/1st Printing

New York: Putnam Publishing Group. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 1999. First Edition; First Printing; Signed by Author. 1/4 Cloth. 1573220256 . An outstanding First Edition, First Printing in unread Fine condition in alike dust-jacket, SIGNED directly on the title page by His Holiness and Nobel Peace Prize winner, the Dalai Lama; Only during a time when we have so little faith in one another, so little confidence in the willingness of others to do what is right, can a strong voice emerge to dispel disillusionment and show us hope. It takes a person of great courage, such as the Dalai Lama, to face these times and say there is hope. There is an argument to be made for basic human goodness. The number of people who spend their lives being violent or dishonest is tiny compared with the number of people-the vast majority we don't hear about-who would wish others only well. According to the Dalai Lama, our survival has depended and will depend on our basic goodness. "Much more effective and important than legislation is our regard for one another's feelings at a simple human level -Here, I refer to the capacity we all have to empathize with one another- to arrive at the inability to bear the sight of another's suffering. " The Dalai Lama presents an ethical system that not only is based on common sense and reason, as opposed to religious dogma or punitive legislation, but has as its goal ultimate happiness for every individual .
