New York: Phaidon Press, 1999. First edition of the photojournalist's second book. Thick folio. Original black cloth. In fine condition. Signed by James Nachtwey. Illustrated throughout with 382 war-crime photos, Nachtwey calls himself an "antiwar photojournalist", which this volume powerfully demonstrates. American photojournalist James Nachtwey has won several awards, such as the Robert Capa Gold Medal four times since in 1983-1998, the 2002 Dan David Prize, and the 2006 Heinz Award. His work has also been adapted into a documentary War Photographer, which received an Academy Award. Inferno continues Nachtwey's poignant award-winning war photography.

Magnum Photos & Umbrage Editions, London 1999 - np (138pp), 63 color illustrations. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. "On June 8, 1968, Robert Kennedy's coffin was put on a train twenty cars long in New York and taken slowly to Washington, D.C. for burial in the Arlington Memorial Cemetery. Paul Fusco, then a staff photographer for Look, was on that train, and the pictures he took of people who lined the tracks along the way fill this moving book. These emotional photographs, many never-before-seen, remember the urgency and tragedy of Bobby Kennedy's assassination and the moving farewell from hundreds of thousands of people who stood patiently in the searing heat along roadsides down the east coast to watch his funeral train pass slowly by just as Abraham Lincoln's had one hundred and three years before". A bright, most handsome copy of the exceedingly uncommon 1999 Magnum Photos true first edition (cited on pages 46-47 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume II") of this supremely moving volume limited to three hundred and fifty numbered copies (#067/350) in wrappers printed on a Xerox Docucolor 100 Digital Color Press (with one of nine different front covers) BOLDLY SIGNED by Paul Fusco in silver marker on the title page. An announcement for the 2001 Leica Gallery New York exhibition of Kennedy images by Paul Fusco and Jacques Lowe has been laid in. Manuscript and Correspondence Archive

[c. 1990s]. Copies of various pieces of writing by the noted mystery writer (and poet), who is, among many other things, the author of the story, and later the novel, that were the basis for the well-reviewed film Drive. The materials here belonged to Sallis's friend Robert Skinner, of Xavier University Library, himself also the author of a highly praised series of mystery novels. A notable association, made all the more so by the fact that both Sallis and Skinner have written mystery series that feature non-white protagonists -- Sallis an African-American, Lew Griffin; and Skinner a Creole, Wesley Farrell, who has been passing for white -- and they also each have written books on Chester Himes, the expatriate African-American mystery writer whose novels laid the foundation for mystery series featuring black detectives with his books that featured Harlem cops "Coffin" Ed Johnson and "Gravedigger" Jones. Sallis wrote a biography and Skinner edited a book of interviews and compiled a bibliography. The Sallis archive includes: • the typescript (printout) of "George Pelecanos," which was published as the introduction to the 1999 St. Martin's paperback edition of Pelecanos' The Big Blowdown. With a few minor changes between this version and the published one. 4 pages. • the typescript (printout) of "Introduction," published in the 1994 Avalon paperback edition of Chester Himes' A Case of Rape. 7 pages. • the typescript (printout) of "Career Moves." 4 pages. Six vignettes about looking for work. Published in Potato Tree, 2007. • the typescript (printout) of "Day's Heat." Fiction. 20 pages (plus a blank, numbered 21st page), 4170 words. Published in Sallis' collection A City Equal to My Desire, 2000. • the typescript (printout) of "Uncles and Fireflies." An essay that pays tribute to his uncle; possibly unpublished. 4 pages. • the typescripts (printouts) of three poems, one page each: "Dawn in the Country's Still Heart," "Our Drive into the Country's Still Heart," and "Reading the World." • a typed letter signed to Robert Skinner, dated August 27, 1992. Touches on his own writing and on Skinner's work on Himes's unfinished novel Plan B (which Sallis calls Plan A). With mailing envelope. • a holiday invitation, 1993, hand-addressed; a signed birthday card, undated, with envelope; an autograph postcard signed, 1995, from New York; a signed holiday card, undated; a signed holiday card, with added sentiment, 1995, with envelope; a signed holiday card, 1997, with envelope. • a flyer announcing the publication party of Sallis' Black Hornet, a Lew Griffin novel; a flyer for a 1995 Sallis reading, which prints his poem "Art of Biography"; an unused promotional postcard featuring the cover art for Moth, another Lew Griffin novel; photocopy of a promotional flyer from No Exit Press, with mailing envelope; 3 promotional flyers from 1997; a 1999 printout of Iain Sinclair's review of Sallis' Eye of the Cricket, again a Lew Griffin novel, from Waterstones website. • Approximately 75 pages of printouts of emails from Sallis to Skinner, May 1996 to October 1997 (plus one page from 1999), and one printed email signed, 2000, that Sallis had to mail when it kept being bounced back to him. With envelope. ¶ All items fine. .

Peter de Potter writes: "The series of photographs, collected under the banner ÔIsolated HeroesÕ, are the result of the collaboration British photographer David Sims and Belgian menswear designer Raf Simons undertook in the summer of 1999. Featured on the pictures are Raf SimonsÕ models, dressed in his collection for Spring-Summer 2000. Each boy is credited with a serial number and his own first name. ÔIsolated HeroesÕ contains both black and white and colour photographs. This collaboration was not a chance meeting. Both Sims and Simons had been outspoken about their mutual admiration, mostly in press interviews. Although the interest in each otherÕs work developed into a firm friendship, they only decided to work together in the wake of SimonsÕ Spring-Summer 2000-collection. Originally intented as a work-in-progress, SimsÕ photographs of SimonsÕ models soon became a body of work in itÕs own right. The photographs of ÔIsolated HeroesÕ were never intended for mere promotional purposes. They even transcend more traditional fashion photography, as they reach for a timeless quality, devoid of signs of the times or traces of trendiness. The pictures encapsulate both SimsÕ and SimonsÕ vision with clarity and precision. The ÔIsolated HeroesÕ-project deals with beauty, youth, masculinity and the perfect isolation of all these preoccupations." Encapsulates the ethos of Simons perfectly. A stunning and unique project.

Tokyo, Japan: Treville Company Limited, 1999. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. Tokyo, Japan: Treville Company Limited, 1999. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. Unpaginated. The photographer's second collection of celebrity portraits and male and female nudes. The First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with the much more common Second Edition. Volume Two of the landmark two-volume set. Published in a very small and limited print run as a hardcover original only. The edition is now rare. Each volume was published separately, ten years apart from each other, and by different publishers. The reason they nevertheless work perfectly together is that Greg Gorman maintained full creative control over the production of both. A stunningly beautiful production by Greg Gorman and Ulrik Neumann: Oversize-volume format. A tall and thick book. Photographs by Greg Gorman. There is minimal text. Printed on thick uncoated stock paper by Treville Company Limited Tokyo to the very highest standards. Gorman's dramatic use of lighting is reproduced in all its power and beauty as only a Japanese printing company can pull it off. In pictorial DJ, which utilizes a nude portrait of Iman in front and a male nude on the back, and white titles on the spine, as issued. Presents Greg Gorman's finest and most representative images in the two genres that he has excelled in and established himself: The celebrity portrait and the nude. Dramatically lit black-and-white, full-page photographs of celebrities are presented as spectacular, highly erotic nudes. Although it took a decade to get it published, the long wait was well worth it. Includes portraits of Rupert Everett (in his first and only full-frontal nude) , Tony Ward, Michael Dean, and Brigitte Nielsen, among so many others. In Volume One, there was a clear demarcation between the extreme closeup celebrity portraits (which showed the soulful beauty of the human face) and the suite of nudes (which showed Gorman's arresting sculptural approach to the nude) . In Volume Two, what is amazing is how Gorman managed effortlessly to persuade every single one of his male and female celebrities to shed their glamorous clothes and show off their smooth, silky, luminescent skin, the only clothing they really need, in daring, full-frontal poses. An accomplished Hollywood and lifestyle magazine photographer who has done commercial work for HBO, Columbia Pictures, Interview Magazine, Sports Illustrated, Playboy Magazine, LIFE, and Tatler, among others, Greg Gorman's true passions are the charismatic personality of the celebrity and the chiseled perfection of the human form, as only the (his) camera can capture. This follow-up collection offers definitive and ample proof of Greg Gorman's distinctive style and outstanding mastery of his chosen medium. A gorgeous "coffee-table" book, this is a "must-have" title for Greg Gorman collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by Greg Gorman. This is an Import title and is now highly collectible. As far as we know, this is the only signed copy available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Gorman did not sign most copies and many copies available online have major flaws yet command up to $500. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with duotone plates. One of the finest living American photographers. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER GREG GORMAN TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 4845707780.

New York: Harper Trophy, 1999-2006. First editions, first printings of each of Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events. Small octavos, original illustrated boards. Each are signed, dated and embossed by Lemony Snicket. Each of the thirteen volumes are in fine condition. Also included is a signed first edition of "Lemony Snicket: The Unauthorized Autobiography". The A beautiful signed set. Critics have compared the Snicket oeuvre to Edward Gorey, the Brothers Grimm and Roald Dahl. They are melodramatic gothic-style cliffhangers, darkly lighthearted books with a contemporary sardonic wit… The inventive use of irony and language, including defining big words… shows that "kids have a nose for literature that is often underestimated" (New York Times).

THE BAD BEGINNING and THE REPTILE ROOM plus 'Magnets for Misfortune.'

New York: HarperCollins, (1999.) . Advance Reading Copy (trade paperback format. ) . Very near fine - a new and unread book, tight binding, no creases, but a little nick at the top of the spine and another at the upper corner (probably done in the publishing process, since these tiny nicks seem to be endemic to most otherwise fine copies). . An extremely uncommon ARC of the first two titles in the "Series of Unfortunate Events" by Lemony Snicket - THE BAD BEGINNING and THE REPTILE ROOM, bound dos-a-dos, (back to back) in glossy illustrated wrappers. SIGNED (sort of) by the author, with an embossed seal and the trademark handwritten comment 'with all due respect' surrounding the seal, and the date '3.X.2004. written inside the seal. First issue, with the misspelling of 'unfortuante' on the covers. Now that this was the basis of a movie starring Jim Carey, Meryl Streep and Jude Law, even those of you who don't have children in your lives are probably familiar with these books, but for those who might still be languishing uninformed, here is a bit of information: The Lemony Snicket books are possibly even more popular than the Potter books - and for good reason! The resemblance to Edward Gorey's works is not accidental - How could anyone not love a book which contains this 'letter to the reader' at the beginning: 'I am sorry to say that the book which you are holding in your hands is extremely unpleasant. It tells the unhappy tale of three very unlucky children. Even though they are charming and clever, the Baudelaire siblings lead lives filled with misery and woe. From the very first page of this book, when the children are at the beach and receive terrible news, continuing on through the entire story, disaster lurks at their heels. One might say they are magnets for misfortune./ In this short book alone, the three youngsters encounter a greedy and repulsive villain, itchy clothing, a disastrous fire, a plot to steal their fortune and cold porridge for breakfast. / It is my sad duty to write down these unpleasant tales, but there is nothing stopping you from putting this book down at once and reading something happy, if you prefer that sort of thing.' What adult would not enjoy the in-jokes of names like Sunny and Klaus (as in von Bulow) - or the fact that these books actually encourage children to learn from reading, as in this excerpt: 'But although Klaus had read books on outer-space exploration, ice-skating tricks, and good marriage methods, and not yet found much use for this information, he had learned a great deal of information that was about to become very useful indeed.' Or a beginning paragraph that includes a word like 'rife'? The vocabulary is wonderful in these books. As a well-publicized debut, this advance reading copy was presumably printed in relatively generous numbers - but very few are currently being offered for sale! Either all the booksellers who got copies of this are hoarding this treasure themselves or, horrors, actually GAVE them to children! However, not only are we willing to sell this ARC, we will even include the much more elusive ' Magnets for Misfortune' which was produced as part of this original publicity campaign (I have never seen any of these offered for sale). This is the first of the promotional magnet sets done by the publisher: it consists of a small sheet of words (5 3/4 by 4 inches, designed to be cut apart and use to create 'refrigerator poetry'' Still in the original sealed plastic bag with a slip announcing a poetry contest for children.
