Who Knows What Constitutes Life [Signed by Ashbery and Murray]

Calais, VT: Z Press, 1999. First edition. Wrappers. Fine/fine. A Fine copy of the first edition in the Publisher's original sewn blue wrappers and green paper dust jacket, SIGNED BY JOHN ASHBERY on the Limitation Page and SIGNED BY ELIZABETH MURRAY on an original seven-color linoleum cut frontispiece, issued in a Limited Edition of 200 unsigned copies and 26 Lettered copies signed by Ashbery and further signed by Murray on an original seven-color linoleum cut frontispiece. This copy is marked "hc" (for "hors de commerce" -- meaning "out of trade") and thus would have been one of a very few extra copies printed in case any of the 26 lettered copies were flawed. Even the unsigned 200 copies are quite scarce to the market and, of course, the 26 signed lettered copies with the original frontispiece are scarcer still. Hors de commerce copies, as offered here, would be the scarcest of the three. A Fine copy, SIGNED BY JOHN ASHBERY on the Limitation Page and SIGNED BY ELIZABETH MURRAY ON HER ORIGINAL ART. QUITE SCARCE.

Fine, pristine. With an intense and beautiful sci-fi mood, Salwowski's cover far exceeds those of several other editions of the famed novel. Please see scans (note that the scan of the book itself is provided for reference. The book is not part of this item). Two small scratches (see scan). Another wow by Salwowski. Big and striking, a room-center eye-catcher hanging on the wall - it is, in fact, hanging on mine right now, with another Mark Salwowski piece. Frame is not included, though.         Cryptonomicon (with decoder)

New York: Avon Books, 1999 New York: Avon Books, 1999. First Edition, with decoder key. Octavo, 918 pp. Fine book in a fine jacket. Probably the most collectible form of the singular Neal Stephenson's fourth genre novel. The rare decoder key is present here. It has been (as per design) detached along the perforations, and the original owner did attempt pencil guesses in the circles. These are erasable, if you desire to do that. Otherwise the key, the template and the little folder-with-rune to enclose it are in fine condition, as is the book itself and the jacket. Another uncategorizable tech-adventure from the master of what it is he does, in a handsome and, with the decoder, very rare form. L31 n

CORNELIS CORNELISZ VAN HAARLEM, A Monograph and Catalogue Raisonné

Aetas Aurea,Vol. XIII . Cloth bound with dusjacket, as new !! 1999. in 4to. 600 pp. of text, 468 illustrations, including 32 color plates. The monograph of Cornelis Cornelisz van Haarlem (1562-1638) is presented as an adherent of sixteenth-century artistic theory, in particular as taught by Karel van Mander in the so-called Haarlem academy. According to this erudite Flemish immigrant, Dutch artists were shamefully backward with respect to mastery in rendering the nude, the great accomplishment of the modern Italian masters. He must have viewed the art of his younger friend - who had taken his advice and overcome these shortcomings by pursuing a lengthy period of intense study 'from life' - as the ultimate fulfilment of his ambition to elevate Dutch history painting to the level of Italian art. Eight chapters are dedicated to the biography of Cornelis Cornelisz, his triple training as an artist, his artistic development, his training of pupils, his influence on the art of his time, his reputation among contemporaries, and the appreciation of his art through the centuries. A ninth, concluding chapter treats the iconographical aspects of two exceptional commissions which the artist received from the Amsterdam poet Hendrick Laurensz Spieghel, and the programmatic underpinnings of his greatest performance, the decoration of the Prinsenhof in Haarlem. Six appendixes contain original transcriptions of seventy-five documents concerning the artist and his family, including the unique list of art left by Cornelis Cornelisz, as well as other relevant sources. Five catalogues list the complete oeuvre of Cornelis Cornelisz, which comprises 303 paintings, either preserved or known from contemporary sources, a mere thirteen drawings, seven works in oil on paper, five models for prints, and twenty-three prints after his inventions. The catalogues are ordered iconographically, whereas the thirty-two colour plates and 365 plates in black and white are arranged in chronological order.Extensive indexes enhance the accessibility and usefulness of the volume.

Invisible Cities. Text by Italo Calvino. Translated from the Italian with a new introduction by William Weaver

San Francisco: Arion Press, 1999. Large 4to, 164pp. Illustrated with twelve drawings of sites and artifacts by Wayne Thiebaud. Bound by Paul Sheet in an anodized aluminum ring binding with U-posts, allowing the leaves to be turned over in sequence. As new. Limited to 400 copies numbered and signed by Wayne Thiebaud. ÒItalo Calvino first published this work in 1972 as Le Citta Invisibili. A tale mixing fantasy, reality, and philosophy, it recounts a long conversation between a young Marco Polo and an aging Kublai Khan. The artist Wayne Thiebaud contributed twelve drawings, with the idea that the images of cities and objects remain almost invisible until the reader takes action. To realize this concept, Andrew Hoyem designed the book with the drawings printed on clear plastic in different ink colours, each matching the colour of the following sheet. The images are revealed only when the transparent sheet is turned back onto the preceding page, a white sheet with printed text. The paper, both coloured and white, is Italian Tiziano, mouldmade at Fabriano mill. The types are Veronese (Monotype and handset) and Twentieth Century (handset). The type (on paper) and the photopolymer plates for the drawings (on mylar) were printed by letterpress.Ó (Ursus Books catalogue).

Paul Williams (1948-2013), American music journalist and writer, "created the first national US magazine of rock music criticism CRAWDADDY! in January 1966 on the campus of Swarthmore College with the help of some of his fellow science fiction fans (he had previously put out some science fiction fanzines) ... He was also the author of more than twenty-five books, of which the best-known are OUTLAW BLUES: A BOOK OF ROCK MUSIC (1969), DAS ENERGI (1973), and BOB DYLAN: PERFORMING ARTIST (1990; 1992; 2004), the acclaimed three-part series. Paul Fusco, then a staff photographer for Look, was on that train, and the pictures he took of people who lined the tracks along the way fill this moving book. These emotional photographs, many never-before-seen, remember the urgency and tragedy of Bobby Kennedy's assassination and the moving farewell from hundreds of thousands of people who stood patiently in the searing heat along roadsides down the east coast to watch his funeral train pass slowly by just as Abraham Lincoln's had one hundred and three years before".         Patrick Oliphant, suite of Six Etchings: Mea Culpa, Billy The Kid, Second Time, Cell Phone, The Hollow Man, A Millennium Story

Milwaukee: Landfall Press. 1999. First edition. Loose in Folder. Fine. Suite of 6 etchings (Mea Culpa, Billy The Kid, Second Time, Cell Phone, The Hollow Man, A Millennium Story), loose in elephant folio cloth folder. Each plate is signed by Oliphant, with the title written in hand by him, and "TP" in the corner, which we think marks this set as one of 10 artist proofs. Either way, only 45 sets were printed before the plates were retired. Plates in Fine condition. The sheets measure 16 x 19 inches (40.5 x 48 cm) , and the images 11 x 14 inches (28 x 35.5 cm). The cloth folder is soiled and scratched, and its front cover has a slight bend. The highlight of the suite is "The Hollow Man," which shows President Bill Clinton in profile, revealing a smirking face, and a body made up of little more than scaffolding and some dancing nude lovelies. "The Hollow Man" is in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Oliphant is a Pulitzer Prize winning political cartoonist whose work can be seen in periodicals and museums all over the world.

Magnum Photos & Umbrage Editions, London 1999 - np (138pp), 63 color illustrations. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. "On June 8, 1968, Robert Kennedy's coffin was put on a train twenty cars long in New York and taken slowly to Washington, D.C. for burial in the Arlington Memorial Cemetery. A bright, most handsome copy of the exceedingly uncommon 1999 Magnum Photos true first edition (cited on pages 46-47 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume II") of this supremely moving volume limited to three hundred and fifty numbered copies (#067/350) in wrappers printed on a Xerox Docucolor 100 Digital Color Press (with one of nine different front covers) BOLDLY SIGNED by Paul Fusco in silver marker on the title page. An announcement for the 2001 Leica Gallery New York exhibition of Kennedy images by Paul Fusco and Jacques Lowe has been laid in.         Manuscript and Correspondence Archive

[c. 1990s]. Copies of various pieces of writing by the noted mystery writer (and poet), who is, among many other things, the author of the story, and later the novel, that were the basis for the well-reviewed film Drive. The materials here belonged to Sallis's friend Robert Skinner, of Xavier University Library, himself also the author of a highly praised series of mystery novels. A notable association, made all the more so by the fact that both Sallis and Skinner have written mystery series that feature non-white protagonists -- Sallis an African-American, Lew Griffin; and Skinner a Creole, Wesley Farrell, who has been passing for white -- and they also each have written books on Chester Himes, the expatriate African-American mystery writer whose novels laid the foundation for mystery series featuring black detectives with his books that featured Harlem cops "Coffin" Ed Johnson and "Gravedigger" Jones. Sallis wrote a biography and Skinner edited a book of interviews and compiled a bibliography. The Sallis archive includes: • the typescript (printout) of "George Pelecanos," which was published as the introduction to the 1999 St. Martin's paperback edition of Pelecanos' The Big Blowdown. With a few minor changes between this version and the published one. 4 pages. • the typescript (printout) of "Introduction," published in the 1994 Avalon paperback edition of Chester Himes' A Case of Rape. 7 pages. • the typescript (printout) of "Career Moves." 4 pages. Six vignettes about looking for work. Published in Potato Tree, 2007. • the typescript (printout) of "Day's Heat." Fiction. 20 pages (plus a blank, numbered 21st page), 4170 words. Published in Sallis' collection A City Equal to My Desire, 2000. • the typescript (printout) of "Uncles and Fireflies." An essay that pays tribute to his uncle; possibly unpublished. 4 pages. • the typescripts (printouts) of three poems, one page each: "Dawn in the Country's Still Heart," "Our Drive into the Country's Still Heart," and "Reading the World." • a typed letter signed to Robert Skinner, dated August 27, 1992. Touches on his own writing and on Skinner's work on Himes's unfinished novel Plan B (which Sallis calls Plan A). With mailing envelope. • a holiday invitation, 1993, hand-addressed; a signed birthday card, undated, with envelope; an autograph postcard signed, 1995, from New York; a signed holiday card, undated; a signed holiday card, with added sentiment, 1995, with envelope; a signed holiday card, 1997, with envelope. • a flyer announcing the publication party of Sallis' Black Hornet, a Lew Griffin novel; a flyer for a 1995 Sallis reading, which prints his poem "Art of Biography"; an unused promotional postcard featuring the cover art for Moth, another Lew Griffin novel; photocopy of a promotional flyer from No Exit Press, with mailing envelope; 3 promotional flyers from 1997; a 1999 printout of Iain Sinclair's review of Sallis' Eye of the Cricket, again a Lew Griffin novel, from Waterstones website. • Approximately 75 pages of printouts of emails from Sallis to Skinner, May 1996 to October 1997 (plus one page from 1999), and one printed email signed, 2000, that Sallis had to mail when it kept being bounced back to him. With envelope. ¶ All items fine. .
