THE STONES OF MANI: Views of the Southern Peloponnese

Sacramento: Stalwart Press, 1999. Sacramento: Stalwart Press, 1999. First edition, signed, limited. Hardcover. Fine. Minor crease to photo mounted on prospectus. 2 volumes (text volume and portfolio of plates); quarto, [72] pp.(text volume); portfolio contains a cover sheet and 12 platinum-palladium photographic prints, each with separate descriptive sheet. Text volume and portfolio covered in grayish-tan natural linen cloth with text volume title printed on blue Hahnemuhle Bugra paper inset on front board, both volumes housed in matching slipcase together with publication announcement/prospectus with mounted photograph on prospectus front wrapper. Beautifully conceived and executed paean to this region of southern Greece. The platinum-palladium prints are contact printed on Crane's 90-pound business card stock, each signed and numbered by the photographer.         The New York Times Acrostic Omnibus Volume 5

New York: Random House, 1999. New York: Random House, 1999 New York: Random House, 1999. First Edition, third printing. Quarto, illustrated wraps, 200 pp. with 200 puzzles, + solution pp. Very Good Plus to About Near Fine; small-scale curling at top right of cover and first few pages, otherwise no salient flaws to point out, and only exceedingly faint toning to the newsprint-stock page margins. With the exception of the sister copies listed by us under stock #001423 and #001422, likely the best copy you'll ever see - if you ever see another at all - of this exceedingly scarce opus of the incomparable Thomas Middleton. Though Cox & Rathvun occasionally come out with very admirable smaller collections of "acrostics" (more correctly, "anacrostics"), there is still no match for Middleton's works, copies of all of which are now getting so scarce. Every puzzle is a true treat, and one of the best brain-preservers and strengtheners you will ever find - especially his cryptic anacrostics. If only there were an infinite source of THOSE. True first edition; a very rare piece for the puzzler, in any condition - and this one is in handsome, collectible shape. LANAC

        Macchu Picchu Suite

New York: Limited Editions Club 1999. New York: Limited Editions Club 1999. First edition. Publisher's velvet-lined green cloth clamshell box, inlaid brown morocco label titled in gilt on front board. Box lightly rubbed else a fine copy. Leaves 43.5 x 36 cm. (17 x14 1/4 inches). Illus. with 11 photographs. One of 60 numbered sets (plus 14 proofs). Three leaves of letterpress and eleven photogravures, each numbered and signed by the photographer. Ten of the prints originally appeared Pablo Neruda's Heights of Macchu Picchu, (Limited Editions Club, 1998). Printed at the press of John Goodman Photogravure, on Arches cover. "Ranney belongs to a tradition of landscape photographers that includes Frederick Sommer, Paul Caponigro, Aaron Siskind, Wynn Bullock, and Minor White. What Ranney shares with this distinguished if loose-knit bunch is the resolve to make photographs whose meaning transcends what you see in the picture. Imagery is important for him, but only insofar as it conveys deeper, frequently spiritual themes and ideas. Mr. Ranney's photographs of Machu Picchu exemplify his efforts to make the medium speak of things beyond what you and I can see. Deceptively simple in appearance, pictures such as ''Machu Picchu (Intihuatana),'' 1971, and ''Machu Picchu (Lower Machu Picchu and the Urubamba Valley),'' 1975, strive to convey the intimate connections between Inca monuments and the awesome setting with its shapely mountain peaks. Photography, for Mr. Ranney, is all about capturing the character and natural flavor as much as the look of a place," Benjamin Gennochio, 'Going further than the eye can see, 'The New York Times, March 13, 2003. OCLC locates only one copy at Univ. Texas, Austin).

        An Interlunar Sunder

The Iron Star Press, New York 1999 - Fine condition - never opened or taken out of the bottle. Kept in a protective plastic case since published. ; Bound in a bottle. First and Limited Edition, 1999. Art by Lucas Kolasa. ISBN-10: 1891763091. Ultra rare.; 4to - 11" to 13" tall; 107 pages; An Interlunar Sunder comes in a bottle due to the DRUNKEN NARRATOR, a sea captain that sails off in the novel's close. The only way anyone could receive this book is if the narrator made it from his ship's materials (simulated parchment as the sails, copper ring binding as the sail ringing.), put it in a bottle, and threw it overboard. The enclosed novel is comprised of one novella, three short stories, several poems which shaper the narrator's character, and illustrations to give lines to the narrator's eyes. The novel's design is to compete with modern media - meant to be read in three hours, and re-read several more times, inspiring the imagination, invigorating hope. A story begins, then several pages along the narrator stops it with a fair good night, he may be drunk, needing of a walk, etc. this same story will pick up exactly where left off perhaps 20 pages later, in the mean time other stories having begun, poems, illustrations, and journal entries. This all makes for an extremely adventurous read, in the drunken narrator's true pirate spirit. Editorial Reviews: "This is the Book of the Century" This book is a fantastic find, incredibly original, and establishing a new genre of fiction- Literary Artistic. The reader is drawn into the world of the book immediately, and finds quickly that it is very difficult to let go. The book manages to compete, rather successfully, with modern forms of entertainment, like TV, or movies, because it can be read in three hours straight, yet affords the reader more depth and understanding with each re-read. -- Panes of Black Writers' GuildAbout the AuthorWilliam Kolasa graduated from St. Bonaventure University in Olean, NY, with a degree in English, and a minor in Justice, Peace and Conflict studies. He has written 9 novels, of which An Interlunar Sunder was the first to be published. He has also written 2 screenplays, and written and directed 3 Off-Broadway plays. He takes an active interest in all facets of his books, including the production and design, which he feels are integral to the completeness of the "Literary Artistic" model. Because of this, he himself came up with the design of the book and of the bottle for An Interlunar Sunder, and hand-made each one. When not writing, he swims, plays clarinet, hikes, and reads. A rare copy of the true first edition. Signed by Fusco, in silver marker pen, to the title page. Limited edition of 350 individually numbered copies (with 9 variant covers). This is no. 56/350. Softcover. Stiff photographically illustrated wrappers. No dust jacket, as issued. Photographs by Paul Fusco. Introduction by Norman Mailer. Design by Cartlidge Levene. Small oblong octavo (17cm x 25cm), pp.148 (unpaginated), 68 full bleed colour xerographs printed on a Xerox Docucolor 100 Digital Color Press. Cited in Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, The Photobook: A History, Volume II (London and New York: Phaidon, 2006) p.46-47. From Parr & Badger: "The first edition of Fusco's brilliant book is also notable for its method of production. It was first produced by The Photographers' Gallery, London, in 1999, as a 'print-on-demand' book to accompany an exhibition of the work in the same year. It was basically a set of bound xerographs with nine different covers in an edition intended to be 350, but which the photographer was not able to realize. Nevertheless, the book proved so popular it was republished by Umbrage Editions in 2001 using more conventional book-making techniques." [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Faksimile Verlag, Luzern / München - 1999. THE MORGAN CRUSADER'S BIBLE - The picture bible of King Louis IV of France * * * The Crusader's bible was created around 1250 in a Parisian workshop. It represents the biblical scenes from the Old Testament - but the protagonists wear contemporary clothes of the 13th century. Since it served the then King of France Louis IV. as picture bible, surely the enormous scenes reflect the way of thinking of the sovereign. * * * Title: Morgan Crusader's Bible * Owner / Shelf mark: Ms M.638 Morgan Library & Museum (New York, USA), Ms Nouv. Acq. Lat. 2294 Bibliotheque nationale de France (Paris, France), Ms Ludwig 16 83. In 1604, the Pope dispatched a delegation to Abbas, the Shah of Persia, to discuss the possibility of joining forces against the Turks, and the bishop sent the bible along as a gift.
