Tender Buttons. Etchings by Susan Weil.

Vincent FitzGerald & Co., New York 1999 - One of 50 copies, all on hand-made papers, each signed by the artist, Susan Weil. 76pp; page size: 11-1/2 inches x 13-1/2 inches. Bound by Zahra Partovi and Priscilla Spitler: peach Dieu Donne hand-made paper with 5 chine colle original etchings by Susan Weil that are Cubist portraits of Gertrude Stein (recognizable features, some set askew, title in red in calligraphy by Jerry Kelly across front panel purple silk spine, binding signatures sewn Coptic style with additional structural feature of extended hollow attached to text spine and to the separate spine piece of the cover allowing the book to open completely flat, housed in two color purple silk clamshell box, title in gold gilt on spine in calligraphy by Jerry Kelly, new. Susan Weil's first book with Vincent FitzGerald, EPIPHANIES by James Joyce (1986) is a joint effort that succeeds completely. Her fascination with words and word-play, incorporating them into visual images that have a sense of motion that is more than simply turning pages, was further explored and polished with publication of GIACOMO JOYCE (1989). It seems inevitable that she would rise to the challenge of Gertrude Stein's TENDER BUTTONS, first published in Paris in 1914, in which Stein attempted to verbalize with prose poems the cubist art of her circle in Paris. According to Weil, Stein, with this work, "invented verbal cubism." In this edition, beautifully printed by Daniel Keleher in Meridien type designed by Adrian Frutiger, the text is shaped by the placement of Weil's etchings, often in the reverse when the plate marks leave "cubes" as a residue on the verso. The etchings were pulled by Aleksandar Duravcevic, Kelly Driscoll and Vincent FitzGerald. As with all books from Vincent FitzGerald & Company, this is a subtle book. At once immediately accessible, appreciation for its complexity grows with opening and reading / viewing this work of art. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The New York Times Acrostic Omnibus Volume 5

New York: Random House, 1999 New York: Random House, 1999. First Edition. Quarto, illustrated wraps, 200 pp. with 200 puzzles, + solution pp. As New; flawless. Remarkably, there is even barely any toning to the newsprint pages, in the years that have passed since publication. Likely the best copy you'll ever see - if you ever see another at all - of this exceedingly scarce opus of the incomparable Thomas Middleton. Though Cox & Rathvun occasionally come out with very admirable smaller collections of "acrostics" (more correctly, "anacrostics"), there is still no match for Middleton's works, copies of all of which are now getting so scarce. Every puzzle is a true treat, and one of the best brain-preservers and strengtheners you will ever find - especially his cryptic anacrostics. If only there were an infinite source of THOSE. True first edition; a very rare piece for the puzzler, in any condition - and this one is in museum-quality shape. LANAC

New York City, NY: Harcourt Brace, 1999. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. New York City, NY: Harcourt Brace, 1999. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 51 pages. The author&#39;s illustrated tale. The Signed First Edition. Precedes and should not be confsued with all other subsequent editions. Removable "Signed By Author" sticker pasted on the DJ spine. Published in a very small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The Signed First Edition is now rare. A tenderly ironic little book as only Saramago could have written it, it is beautifully complemented with illustrations by the Caldecott Award-winning artist Peter Sis. Presents Jose Saramago&#39;s "O Conto da Ilha Desconhecido" in a felicitous English translation. "A man went to knock at the king&#39;s door and said, Give me a boat. The king&#39;s house had many other doors, but this was the door for petitions. Since the king spent all of his time sitting by the door for favors (favors being offered to the king), whenever he heard someone knocking at the door for petitions, he would pretend not to hear. Why the petitioner required a boat, where he was bound for, and who volunteered to crew for him, the reader will discover in this delightful fable, a philosophic love story worthy of Swift or Voltaire" (Publisher&#39;s blurb). The man travels with a cleaning woman, and with the most delicate touch, Saramago has given us a parable of Christianity: The king is God, the man is Jesus, the woman is Mary Magdalene, and the island is freedom. An absolute "must-have" title for Jose Saramago collectors. <b><i> This copy is one of the Signed First Edition, indicated as such on the removable spine sticker, and it is very prominently and beautifully signed in black fountain pen on the title page by Jose Saramago. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page or bookplate. This title is a modern classic. This is one of very few signed copies of the First American Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Among the Nobel Laureates and other great writers of our time, Saramago&#39;s signature was probably the most difficult to get because he rarely left Lanzarote, the island he moved to at the height of his fame. Now that he is dead, he isn&#39;t signing any more copies. And yet, signed copies of his books, while not exactly cheap, remain under-priced as compared to those of say, Gabriel Garcia Marquez or Cormac McCarthy. While they are great writers, Saramago will be regarded by posterity as a greater writer than both of them, and there is no British or American novelist of the last fifty years, living or dead, who comes close to Saramago&#39;s achievement (except, according to Harold Bloom, for Philip Roth at his best). A rare signed copy thus. </B></i> Regarded by Harold Bloom as one of the two greatest novelists of our time (the other being Philip Roth), Jose Saramago will be read as probably the greatest European novelist of the last fifty years. Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1998. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER JOSE SARAMAGO TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0151005958.

Large Mass Hierarchy from a Small Extra Dimension" in Physical Review Letters 83 Issue 17, 25 October 1999, pp. 3370 - 3373 and "An Alternative to Compactification" in Physical Review Letters 83 Issue 23, 6 December 1999, pp. 4690-4693

FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF TWO OF THE MOST CITED PAPERS IN THE HISTORY OF PHYSICS. In these papers, Randall and Sundrum show that infinite extra dimension and weakness of gravity can be explained with an extra dimension. "String theory extra dimensions have traditionally been considered to be small and unobservable. Randall and Sundrum introduced an alternative in these two papers in which one of the additional dimensions is "warped." In their approach, the strong, weak, and electromagnetic forces are confined to three dimensions (on a 3-brane, a three-dimensional "membrane," at a specific location in the other dimensions), but gravity propagates in the warped space as well. Their work differs from most of the rest of string theory in that they predict quantum effects due to gravity that may soon be testable by the LHC. To parse the theoretical disunification of physics in disparate gravitational force-strength Lisa Randall and Raman Sundrum posited the existence of extra-dimensional brane-layers actively leaking energy fluctuations into our own universe; with mathematical supports, Randall and Sundrum illustrated their idea&#39;s compatibility with existing cosmological valuations and astrophysical data. Lisa Randall was the first tenured woman in physics at Princeton, as well as the first tenured theorist at Harvard and MIT. Additionally, she is the most cited theoretical physicist in the world. CONDITION & DETAILS: Maryland: The American Physical Society. Physical Review Letters 83 Issue 17 pp. 3370 - 3373, 25 October 1999 and Physical Review Letters 83 Issue 23, pp. 4690-4693, 6 December 1999. Quarto (11.25 x 8.25 inches; 281 x 206mm). Two entire issues in original wraps. Near fine except for some minor rubbing and scuffing to the front wraps of each issue. Both volumes are tightly bound and very clean throughout.

Published on the occasion of the 1999 exhibition Peter Beard: Fifty Years of Portraits, curated by Peter T. Tunney, at the Fahey/Klein Gallery, Los Angeles. Out of print. CONDITION: Fine. A Near Mint copy. From the publisher: "Throughout his remarkable life, photographer, naturalist, and raconteur Peter Beard has befriended and photographed some of the most prominent figures of our times. Portraiture is woven into the fabric of all of Beard's work, yet to date this relationship has never been carved out and explored. From his earliest attempts at expression as a child to the mania for travel and adventure that overtook Beard as a young man, and onward to Beard's most recent work on assignment, portraiture is a central thread of Beard's career. Beard's 'portraits,' however, rarely conform to the traditional format of this genre. Instead, they embody spontaneity, the moments shared with intimate friends, and the adventurous lives and experiences to which he has long been attracted. A vital chronicler of our times, he has created memorable images of such icons as Picasso, Francis Bacon, Karen Blixen, Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Salvador Dali, and Mick Jagger, along with the last great safari hunters, such as J.A. Hunter, Phillip Percival, and Cape-to-Cairo Grogan." Signed by Author [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Zuidervaart, "Early quantification of scientific knowledge: Nicolaas Struyck (1686-1769) as a collector of empirical data". In: The statistical mind in a pre-statistical era: The Netherlands 1750-1850 (2002), pp. 125-148. First and only edition of the first of Struyck's major works, full of mathematical, geographical and astronomical information, published in 1740, presenting the results of some 20 years of scholarship, together with the first and only edition of its continuation from 1753. Although the title of the 1740 Inleiding names geography first, it devotes much more space to astronomy, including extensive sections on comets, which are the main subject of the 1753 Vervolg. The Amsterdam mathematician Nicolaas Struyck (1686-1769) is "perhaps the first great researcher of comets ... his 1740 book included some of the first well-researched accounts of comets. His follow-up (of 1753) - greatly expanded our knowledge of well-observed comets seen up to the time of this publication" (Kronk)."[Edmond] Halley produced both the first scientific mortality table and the first table of cometary elements. Struyck followed in his wake and complemented or improved on Halley's work in both areas. Struyck was the first scientist who recognized the difference in mortality between and women in the mortality table that he published in his Geographie of 1740. In the same book Struyck made the first attempt to supplement Halley's cometary research" (Zuidervaart). Each volume with the modern bookplate of J.K. Leeksma on paste-down. With some waterstains in the margins and one leaf with some smudges. Sides of the binding heavily rubbed. In good condition and wholly untrimmed.

Ad 1:ADB 24, pp. 445-6; Bircher C 3719; VD17 12:189286H; cf. Apponyi 747 (Dutch translation); Atabey 882 (first edition); BLC German (17th cent.); O-45 (idem); ad 2: Bircher D797; ad 4: cf. Rill, Kaiser Matthias. Bruderzwist und Glaubenskampf (1999). Complete text of a highly important historical work in 4 separately published volumes - here bound together - on the military history of the Austro-Hungarian region, including Transylvania, during the years 1395 -1612, describing all the wars, sieges of cities and fortresses, battles with the Turks and other noteworthy events in Hungary, written and assiduously recorded by Hieronymus Ortelius or Oertel (1543-1614). Nothing like this was ever printed before. Especially the period 1592-1612 is treated in great detail since the author included eyewitness reports on the Turkish invasions in the region. The author, a notary at the imperial court, was encouraged to write the work by his brother-in-law, Johann Sibmacher, a Nuremberg engraver and publisher, who was also responsible for the engraved plates in the first volume which includes a large engraved folding map of Hungary, Transylvania, and Moldavia (28×51 cm). This chronicle on Hungary was published in 4 separate volumes. The first volume, here in its third edition, is divided into 3 parts, and treats the period 1395-1602. The preliminaries contain notes on the Hungarian kings (pp. 1-8), notes on the Turkish sultans and emperors (pp. 9-12), and a note on the original name of Hungary (pp. 13-14). At the end there is a list of all the cities and fortifications mentioned in the chronicle and appearing on the large folding map showing the Austro-Hungarian region, together with their co-ordinates. The 30 double-page plates show a.o. the sieges and the fortifications of the following cities: Vienna, Zolnoch, Tocaky, Guyla, Zigeth, Sysegk, Palotta, Villeck, Raab, Comorra, Gran, Vizzegrad, Tergovist, Temeswar, Hatwan, Petrina, Tottis, Papa, Waitzen, Budapest (Ofen & Pest 2x), Tolna, Stulweisenburg, Canisha, the execution of count Hardeck and an execution at Canisha. The cities were either besieged by the Turkss or the Turkish cities by the Christians. The 26 full-page portraits show the Turkish sultans and the Hungarian military commanders and rulers. These first 3 parts were followed by the Continuatio (ad 2), here in the second edition, describing the events from January 1603 until December 1603, followed by the Viertter Thail (ad 3) on the period 1604 till February1607.The Appendix to the fourth part (ad 4) here in its second edition (1622). It describes the life of King Matthias of Austria (1557-1619) from June 1608 to his election and coronation as Roman Emperor in July 1612.
