        The Mystery of Mars

Crown Publishers, Inc., New York, NY 1999 - Signed on title page in black ink. This book was personally signed by Dr. Ride on March 09, 2002 at Vroman's Bookstore in Pasadena, California USA. Sally Ride, former NASA Astronaut, was born on May 26, 1951 in Los Angeles, California. She graduated from Westlake High School in 1968 and received a Bachelor of Science in physics and a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1973 from Stanford University. She also received her Master of Science and doctorate degrees in physics from Stanford in 1975 and 1978. Dr. Ride was selected for astronaut training in 1978, and reported to NASA in July of that year. As part of her training, she was a member of the support crew for both the second and third space shuttle flights, and worked in mission control as a capsule communicatory (CAPCOM) for those two missions. Dr. Ride flew in space twice. Her first flight was aboard that space shuttle Challenger in 1983. The flight, commanded by Captain Robert Crippen, was launched from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on June 18. During the mission, the five-member crew deployed communications satellites for Canada and Indonesia, performed the first satellite deployment and retrieval with the shuttle's robot arm, and conducted materials and pharmaceutical research. Mission STS-7 was in orbit for 6 days (147 hours), then returned to earth to land on a lakebed runway at Edwards Air Force Base, California on June 24, 1983. Dr. Ride's second spaceflight was also aboard Challenger, on STS-41G (the thirteenth space shuttle flight), in October, 1984. This flight was also commanded by Captain Robert Crippen. During their 8-day mission, the crew deployed the Earth Radiation Budget satellite, conducted scientific observations of the Earth, and demonstrated the potential for satellite refueling by astronauts. The mission lasted 197 hours, and concluded with a landing at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. In June, 1985, Dr. Ride was assigned to a third space shuttle flight. Training for that flight was interrupted in January, 1986 by the space shuttle Challenger accident. For the next six months she served as a memeber of the Presidential Commission investigating the accident. Upon completion of the investigation, Dr. Ride was assigned to NASA headquarters in Washington, D.C. as assistant to the NASA Administrator for long-range planning. In this role she created NASA's Office of Exploration and produced a report on the future of the space program entitled "Leadership and America's Furture in Space."       London Bloomsbury 1999 - First issue of the deluxe edition. With an illustrated titlepage and with letter facsimiles at the end. 8vo, publisher’s original blue cloth lettered and with a colour pictorial pastedown on the upper cover, the spine gilt lettered, a.e.g. and with silk bookmark stitched in. This edition was issued without a dustjacket. 251, [4]. An extremely fine copy, as mint. FIRST DELUXE EDITION OF THE SECOND HARRY POTTER BOOK, in the extremely handsome binding for the edition of full powder blue cloth with a colour pictorial pastedown. The issuance of a deluxe edition so shortly after the initial publication of this, only the second title in the series, clearly shows the impact Ms. Rowling’s books have had on the modern book trade. Almost immediately after the publication of the first title, Rowling’s "Potter" books gained worldwide attention, won multiple awards, and have to date sold more than 400 million copies. Rowling is nearly as famous for her rags to riches story. She wrote the first of the series on a used manual typewriter while living on welfare in 1995. She was rejected by 12 publishers before finding Bloomsbury, who suggested that she should also find a day job as there was no money to be made in children’s books. By 2007 Forbes had named Rowling as the first person to become a U.S.-dollar billionaire by writing books, the second-richest female in an entertainment industry, and the 1,062nd richest person in the world.         The Collected Works of James M. Buchanan.

Liberty Fund, Indianapolis 1999 - First editions of each of volume that comprise the collected works of Nobel Prize-winning economist James M. Buchanan's papers. Each volume is signed and dated by Buchanan. Octavo, original half cloth. 19 volumes. In very good condition, dust jackets were not issued for this set. Buchanan is responsible for the rebirth of political economics as a scholarly pursuit (Boettke, 1998). Buchanan has done more than most to introduce ethics, legal, political, and social thinking into economics. Consequently, he maintains that public policy cannot be considered in terms of distribution, but instead should question rules that engender a pattern of exchange and distribution (Swedberg, 1990). Buchanan distinguishes between politics and policy. Politics is about the rules of the game, while policy is focused on strategies that players adopt within a given set of rules. The Economic Journal noted in 2006 that "Questions about what are good rules of the game are in the domain of social philosophy, whereas questions about the strategies that players will adopt given those rules is the domain of economics, and it is the play between the rules (social philosophy) and the strategies (economics) that constitutes what Buchanan refers to as constitutional political economy".         Das englische Haus, 3 Bde. [Gebundene Ausgabe] Hermann Muthesius (Autor)

3 Bde.: Mann (Gebr.), Berlin, 1999. 1999. Hardcover. Good. 31,2 x 22,2 x 6,6 cm. Patrick Oliphant, suite of Six Etchings: Mea Culpa, Billy The Kid, Second Time, Cell Phone, The Hollow Man, A Millennium Story

Landfall Press, Milwaukee 1999 - Suite of 6 etchings (Mea Culpa, Billy The Kid, Second Time, Cell Phone, The Hollow Man, A Millennium Story), loose in elephant folio cloth folder. Each plate is signed by Oliphant, with the title written in hand by him, and "TP" in the corner, which we think marks this set as one of 10 artist proofs. Either way, only 45 sets were printed before the plates were retired. Plates in Fine condition. The sheets measure 16 x 19 inches (40.5 x 48 cm) , and the images 11 x 14 inches (28 x 35.5 cm). The cloth folder is soiled and scratched, and its front cover has a slight bend. The highlight of the suite is "The Hollow Man," which shows President Bill Clinton in profile, revealing a smirking face, and a body made up of little more than scaffolding and some dancing nude lovelies. "The Hollow Man" is in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Oliphant is a Pulitzer Prize winning political cartoonist whose work can be seen in periodicals and museums all over the world. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
