        Prag Um 1968

      1998 - Leipzig 1998, Hardcover, white boards black cloth spine in black clamshell portfolio box, Number 1 of 5 copies, 55,5 x 45,5 x 4,5cm. Texts by Alexander Dubcek, Ludv ík Vaculik and Václav Havel. Photographs by Sylvia-Marita Plath. Each section signed by contributor. 60 Original photographs mounted individually on black card with introduction handwritten in silver pen by photographer. "Impressive photo documentation of the events on 21 August 1968 in Prague and the Prague Spring. Nr. 1 of only 5 numbered copies, signed and dated by the photographer in the colophon. Three copies are today in american libraries / museums. The text is signed by the authors, including Vaclav Havel, later president of the Czech Republic. The extremely rare album documents the invasion of the Russian army in Prague 1968. The pictures were made by a then 18 year old student of the GDR It was not until 1997, when a working group for the future Museum of Contemporary History in Leipzig started to collect material on the Prague Spring that the photographer recalled her photographs. The photographer was of course not allowed to have these photographs and had no chance to publish them in the GDR. She published later photographs in 'pop books' in the GDR, like a book on the Beatles: her photographs show 'fans' of the GDR. Plath is also not known in 'DDR Frauen fotografieren', making this work extremely scarce, little known, but highly important. The Prague Spring was a period of political liberalisation in Czechoslovakia during the era of its domination by the Soviet Union after World War II. It began on 5 January 1968, when reformist Alexander Dubcek was elected First Secretary of the Communist Party (KSČ), and continued until 21 August when the Soviet Union and other members of the Warsaw Pact invaded the country to halt the reforms. The reforms, especially the decentralisation of administrative authority, were not received well by the Soviets, who, after failed negotiations, sent half a million Warsaw Pact troops and tanks to occupy the country. A large wave of emigration swept the nation. A spirited non-violent resistance was mounted throughout the country, involving attempted fraternizations, painting over and turning street signs (on one occasion an entire invasion force from Poland was routed back out of the country after a day's wandering), defiance of various curfews, etc. While the Soviet military had predicted that it would take four days to subdue the country the resistance held out for eight months, and was only circumvented by diplomatic stratagems." -Michael Kuhn Condition: Box, Near Fine, shows some sunning.         Results of Astronomical Observations Made During the Years 1834, 5, 6, 7, 8, at the Cape of Good Hope;

      Overview Details & Condition A rare, large-paper presentation copy of this "monumental survey of the stars" inscribed in Herschels' own hand to "The Geological Society of London by the hand of the Author" following the printed line "Presented by Algernon Duke of Northumberland to", and noted as inscribed on the printed dedication leaf following the title. Inscribed presentation copies of Herschel's atlas are extremely rare. The most recent to appear at auction was sold as part of the Haskell F. Norman collection in 1998. It was the dedication copy inscribed by Herschel to the Dowager Duchess of Northumberland, the widow of the book's recently deceased patron. One other is recorded at Sotheby's in 1980; it was inscribed to the English astronomer and telescope builder William Lassell. John Herschel, astronomer, mathematician, and inventor, was one of the most versatile and respected scientists of the mid-19th century. He was the son of William Herschel, the discoverer of Uranus, who had "pioneered the observational study of nebulous patches and star clusters" and made important contributions in understanding the size and shape of the Milky Way, the nature of nebulae, and how gravitational forces operated on star systems (ODNB). John showed himself to be a skilled mathematician and scientist at a young age, and in 1816 took up astronomy under his father's tutelage. Together they constructed a 20 foot focal length, 18.25 inch aperture reflecting telescope similar to the one that the elder Herschel had used, and John spent much of the 1820s continuing his father's search for double stars. In 1832 he published a method of calculating the orbits of gravitationally linked doubles. "This contribution, which won him a gold medal from the Royal Astronomical Society, was hailed as one of his greatest achievements, a proof of his father's 1803 determination, based on his observations of double stars, that Newton's laws of gravitational attraction rule remote stellar systems as they do our solar system" (ODNB). By the early 1830s the Herschels had thoroughly investigated the skies of the northern hemisphere, but the southern stars, with their enigmatic Magellanic Clouds and Eta Carinae nebulae, remained to be systematically searched. In 1833 John packed the telescope and moved with his young family to Cape Town, South Africa, where he spent the years between 1834 and 1837 completing and expanding upon the great work begun by his father. "He swept the whole of the southern sky, catalogued 1,707 nebulae and clusters, and listed 2,102 pairs of binary stars. He carried out star counts, on William Herschel's plan, of 68,948 stars in 3,000 sky areas" (DNB). Among the many noteworthy aspects of Herschel's efforts in South Africa, his "goal in observing and cataloguing so many thousands of nebulae and double stars systems was, like that of his father, not simply to locate nebulae and double star systems, but also to establish and record their appearance at the time of observation so that future observers could determine the degree to which these massive celestial objects change or evolve. Thus, a major legacy of the Herschels was not only to reveal the richness of the region beyond the solar system, but also to show that its objects should be seen as historical, possibly evolving entities" (ODNB). Upon his return to England in May 1838, Herschel was feted as a scientific hero, though the results of his work would take a decade to write up and publish. "By the end of 1842 he had performed without assistance the computations necessary for the publication of his Cape observations. In September 1843 the letterpress was 'fairly begun,' and after some delays the work appeared in 1847, at the cost of the Duke of Northumberland, in a large quarto volume... Besides the catalogues of nebulæ and double stars, it included profound discussions of various astronomical topics, and was enriched with over sixty exquisite engravings... For these labours he received the Copley medal in 1847, and a special testimonial from the Royal Astronomical Society in 1848" (DNB). Herschel also made significant contributions in mathematics, natural history, the philosophy of science, and the early development of photography, and he corresponded widely and generously with colleagues in all fields. He was undoubtedly one of the most accomplished and beloved scientific figures of the age. But it was these magnificent astronomical efforts which made his name and pointed the way for future generations of astronomers and cosmologists. An important and highly desirable presentation copy of this key astronomical work. Being the Completion of a Telescopic Survey of the Whole Surface of the Visible Heavens, Commenced in 1825. London: Smith, Elder and Co., 1847. Large quarto (315 x 240 mm). Early 20th-century red cloth, titles to spine gilt. Frontispiece and 17 plates of which 4 are folding. Geological Society of London library regulations to front pastedown, small ink stamps to backs of each plate and the title, "presented to the Geological Society of London" ticket to verso of dedication leaf. A few light marks to cloth, small shelf number ticket removed from tail of spine, contents lightly toned but overall clean, a couple of unobtrusive short tears to the folding plates in the gutters with small tape repairs. A very good copy. Bibliography: Norman 1056

        Siamese hymnal.Phetchaburi (in Thailand), Samuel Gamble McFarland, 1876. 8vo. With Western round-head letterpress music notation. Set in Thai type with incidental roman. This copy with the letterpress presentation slip on blue paper tipped in (from McFarland and his wife), for people who contributed to the project. Contemporary half tanned sheepskin, probably bound for presentation.

      Cf. KVK & WorldCat (4 copies of the 2nd issue); not in Cordier, Indosinica; for the history of the presses: J.F. Coakley, “Printing offices of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions ...”, in: Harvard Library Bulletin IX (1998), pp. 5-34, at pp. 26-27. Very rare first edition (first issue) of McFarland's Thai (Siamese) hymnal, one of the first books printed by the mission press at Phetchaburi (Petchabury) in Thailand, with the 86 hymns selected by donors who contributed at least five dollars for the production of the hymnal. Each hymn appears on a single double-page spread (with the music at the head of the left page) except the last, whose text continues on nine additional pages. The texts of the hymns themselves appear only in Thai, but the title, introductory note and hymn titles also appear in English and each hymn gives the name of the person or organisation that selected it in English only. Some of the donors who selected the hymns lived in Thailand (both Europeans and natives) but most lived in the United States. Each hymn also indicates the metre, either with abbreviations for the common, long, short, hallelujah or particular metre, or with an indication of the number of syllables per line. The music was apparently set and electrotyped by J.M. Armstrong in Philadelphia and the electrotype blocks shipped to Phetchaburi for printing, for the Newberry Library copy of the second issue has a manuscript note "Music typography by J.M. Armstrong, Philadelphia, Pa.".With the title-page somewhat browned, water stains in the head margin and occasional minor foxing or small smudges, but generally in good condition. The binding with some scuff marks and stains, the head and foot of the spine damaged and the endleaf with the presentation slip detached, but otherwise good and structurally sound.

First and only Dutch edition of a popular travelogue written in a lively style by Baron Dominique-Vivant Denon (1747-1825), describing his explorations in the Lower and Upper part of Egypt during the campaign of Napoleon Bonaparte (1799-1801). Protected by the French troops, Denon was able to explore the country extensively. As a result, his travel account was the first important scientific fruit of Napoleon's Egyptian campaign. The detailed illustrations primarily depict archaeological sites, ruins and monuments with bass-reliefs and hieroglyphs from the Thebaid region, and prompted the Egyptian Revival in architecture and art.Bindings slightly chafed, one hinge a bit worn, and some occasional minor spots.         15 Kyoto Gardens

      Poestenkill, NY: Kaldewey Press, 1998. Kaldewey, Gunnar. Quarto. 28pp., frenchfold. One of forty copies, signed by the author/artist/printer, Gunnar Kaldewey. This book is inspired by the notion of "nature as art," and was created after Kaldewey spent three months living in a traditional Japanese wooden house in Kyoto, studying the art of the Japanese garden as the seasons changed from winter to summer. The first text page poetically states: "Books are like gardens that one can carry/around; gardens are like books that one can/experience, promenade through or get lost..." Kaldewey has captured the finest details of nature in his prints of lime and silver, with borders in black. Text printed in orange on transparent, smaller octavo-sized sheets, which appear intermittently throughout the illustrations. Bound in green Kozo paper-over-boards, with two little stones from the Japanese game of Go mounted to the cover and surrounded by gold foil and a clear plastic frame. Housed in a paper chemise and matching slipcase. Small stain to bottom edge of slipcase, else very fine. (Von Lucius, pp. 99-101).

        FOUR WOOD ENGRAVINGS MADE BY ERIC RAVILIOUS IN 1933 FOR THE GOLDEN HOURS PRESS' FAMOUS TRAGEDY OF THE RICH JEW OF MALTA

      [West Yorkshire]: The Fleece Press, [1998]. A LIMITED PRINTING OF ONLY 120 SETS. RARE in the marketplace. Four prints pressed from the original 1933 woodblocks by artist Eric Ravilious, and with a leaf of text additional. 10.5" x 8" leaves, laid into a portfolio of cream paper printed in red and black. A pristine set, as perfect and mint. FIRST EDITION AND ONE OF ONLY 120 SETS PRODUCED, PRINTED FROM THE ORIGINAL 1933 WOODBLOCKS FROM THE ESTATE OF THE ARTIST. Ravilious engraved more than 400 illustrations and drew over 40 lithographic designs for books and publications during his relatively short lifetime. His first commission, in 1926, was to illustrate a novel for Jonathan Cape. He went on to produce work both for large companies such as the Lanston Corporation, but less commercially he was noticed by several of the Private Presses and produced small-run editions for publishers such as the Golden Cockerel Press (for whom he illustrated an edition of Twelfth Night),the Curwen Press, the Cresset Press, and the Golden Hours Press, whose RICH JEW OF MALTA was printed in a run of only 250 copies. In 1942, while serving as a war artist, he died when the aircraft he was in was lost in the North Sea.

      - Cf. KVK & WorldCat (4 copies of the 2nd issue); not in Cordier, Indosinica; for the history of the presses: J.F. Coakley, "Printing offices of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions .", in: Harvard Library Bulletin IX (1998), pp. Disorder Incubation Isolation (Autumn/Winter 1999-2000)

      Privately Printed, Antwerp 1998 - 30 x 30 cm, 23 12 x 12" cards housed in record box. Numerous Colour and Black & White plates. Eep. 9th season, the collection is shown in a Filmstudio 'Studio Carr're' on the Avenue du Pr'sident Wilson no. 50 in Paris close to Porte de la Chapelle on Friday 29th January 1999 at 09h30 pm. A little group of teenagers opened the show, with black flags featuring the following words: DISORDER INCUBATION ISOLATION These words are important to describe the image of the collection, and it is also a memorial to Joy Division. The global idea of this collection is to make a reference to the past, specially the first two parts of the show. Fashion goes so quickly that people tend to forget the historical meaning of clothes, especially costumes. This is why the opening of the show was like a procession to create the right atmosphere. The most important part was a group of models wearing black Capes, classical, asymmetric and circle shapes in three quarter length, a variety of design, an other group wearing ceremonial costumes, shirts with cuffs and collar that are removable. The hair was very constructed in sharp lines. The first three groups had black coloured hair. And in the last part the hair changed to blond coloured hair, but still very constructed hairstyles. The colour of the outfit changed from black to grey. Raf Simons likes plain, black and monotone, but also he likes the past in contrast to the future. The music was in this part very fast. The blond group was wearing long light grey and dark grey coats with zippers. The silhouettes are very clean: shirts in classical weaving wool fabrics without collars. Nearly each light grey outfit was with a white 'R' Turtleneck and the dark grey outfits with a red 'R' Turtleneck. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
