        One Hundred Years of Solitude.

Norwalk, CT: Easton Press, 1998. First edition of Easton press edition of the Garcia Marquez's masterpiece. Octavo, original full leather, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, front and rear panels, all edges gilt, ribbon bound in. Translated from the Spanish by Gregory Rabassa. Signed by both Gabriel Garcia Marquez and signed by the translator, Gregory Rabassa on the half-title page, who has added the classic quote from this novel, "It's enough to know that you and I exist at this moment. Gregory Rabassa." In fine condition. Illustrated by Alan Phillips. A unique example. "One Hundred Years of Solitude chronicles the life of Macondo, a fictional town based in part of Garcia Marquez's hometown of Aracataca, Colombia, and seven generations of the founding family, the Buendias. He creates a complex world with characters and events that display the full range of human experience. For the reader, the pleasure of the novel derives from its fast-paced narrative, humor, vivid characters, and fantasy elements. In this 'magic realism', the author combines imaginative flights of fancy with social realism to give us images of levitating priests, flying carpets, a four-year-long rainstorm, and a young woman ascending to heaven while folding sheets" (NYPL Books of the Century 31).

The letter was originally drawn to represent the head of an ox and given the name aleph (Phoenician "ox"). In Greek this became alpha. The shape of the letter changed gradually as it passed into the Hebrew, Greek, and Roman alphabets. Our capital A is based on the Greek form. The lower-case a was first used in medieval manuscripts.       (GOSSAGE, JOHN). Gossage, John. JOHN GOSSAGE: THE THINGS ANIMALS CARE ABOUT, AND. - DELUXE LIMITED EDITION WITH A SIGNED PHOTOGRAPH. Signed with an Original Photograph. Tucson, AZ: Nazraeli Press, 1998. First Edition 1/32 Deluxe. 4to. Loose Contents in a Wooden Box. Photography Monograph. Fine/No Jacket - As Issued. Thirty-seven individual 10 x 8" cardstock sheets, 32 duotone illustrations. John Gossage's "The Things That Animals Care About, And." is a unique book cum object that presents thirty-two views of nature as they might appear from the perspective of an animal. The images are for the most part mundane and undistinguished to the human viewer, but perhaps integral to the daily life and well-being of a different species. Each is presented as a duotone black and white plate affixed to the recto of a matte cream-colored cardstock sheet that has an irregular horizontal pencil line that references perhaps terrain - or the horizon - drawn across it. These are accompanied by one blank sheet, two title pages uniquely lettered by John Gossage, and a hand-letterpressed colophon that are all housed in the publisher's 11 x 9 x 2" ramen wood display box (that doubles as a frame) with a Plexiglas face and sliding wooden closure with Gossage's hand drawn title silkscreened across it. A most handsome example of the exceedingly uncommon deluxe first edition limited to thirty-two copies containing an additional 4 ½ x 3 ¾" black and white silver gelatin print of two trees and a cloud that is reproduced in the book mounted on a 10 x 8" sheet of board SIGNED "John Gossage / 12" in pencil on the verso, as issued.         Box of Ku

Tucson, Arizona: Nazraeli Press. Very Good. This edition of Masao Yamamoto's "A Box of Ku" includes two softcover books, both artist's proofs and signed on first endpaper, three signed original prints, and housed in a clamshell box. Also included are two prospectuses from Nazraeli Press. All items are in very good condition. Three b&w prints are of the same image of a cat facing two doves; all measure 4 1/4" x 2"; all are signed in black ink and have a red rubber stamp on verso; all are in very good condition with all prints having a crease down the middle and two prints have yellowish tones. Artist's proof books are both copyrighted to 1998, are large 8vo 9"-10" tall and are unpaginated; both are signed in black ink on first end paper; one book has very light soiling but otherwise both are in very good condition. Purple and black clamshell box has light sunning to top edge. The two books are a selection of Masao Yamamoto's small, yet extraordinary prints. His photographs "remind one of postcards or snapshots, records of intimate moments that are both fleeting and eternal, private and universal. Bent, frayed and stained, the jewel-like prints - most of which are small enough to fit into the palm of a hand - transcend their medium and become more than their subject" (Nazraeli Press). Image depicts the front and back of one of the prints. Due to weight of item shipping may cost extra. .
