AMERICAN PSYCHO

Picador, London 1998 - First hardcover edition, first impression. Original black textured paper covered boards, lettered silver on spine. In original dust-wrapper. A tight, unread copy that is virtually mint in d/w. D/w has just a touch of fading to spine. It is not price clipped and displaysthe original price of £10 on inner front flap. This shocking black comedy is now recognized as something of a 20th century classic of American literature. However, it excited so much controversy when it was first published in 1991 that its American publishers dropped plans for an intended hardback edition and, instead, issued it only in paperback form. This British hardback edition from Picador was the first and, to date, the only hard cover trade edition of this important work. A lovely copy with clean, white pages and edges, squeaky tight binding and spotless d/w. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Digital Fortress

St. Martin's NY: St. Martin's. (1998). The first book, a well-crafted techno-thriller about the NSA, by the author of the mega-bestselling The Da Vinci Code. While this book has a very different subject matter than his more famous bestseller, it does anticipate the later book in dealing at length with secrets and codes. Still, one can presume a relatively small first printing: Digital Fortress did not achieve great commercial success until after the phenomenal sales of The Da Vinci Code in 2003 and beyond. Signed by the author. Fine in a fine dust jacket with a few surface scratches on the rear panel. A very nice copy of a notable debut. . First Edition. Hardcover.

        Sunrise is Coming After While

NY: Limited Editions Club, 1998. Folio. (i), 23ff. One of 300 copies. Signed by Maya Angelou and the artist, Phoebe Beasley. Illustrated with silkscreens of six collages by Beasley. This collection of poems by Langston Hughes was selected by Angelou, who also wrote the Introduction and Afterword. Although Hughes was a fairly controversial poet in his time, often criticized for the deceptive simplicity of his verses, he "succeeded in his lifetime aim: to create a body of work that would epitomize the beauty and variety of African-American experiences, as well as the diversity of emotions, thoughts, and dreams that he saw common to all human beings." Beasley's collages were chosen by Angelou to perfectly compliment Hughes's eloquent poems. According to Angelou, "She sees human beings, our foibles, frailties and strengths, and she cares about what she sees." Beasley's work is influenced by two of the forerunners of African-American art, Romare Bearden and Jacob Lawrence, and her artwork was twice awarded the Presidential Seal. Extremely fine in purple cloth with a black morocco lettering piece bearing the title in gilt. Housed in a matching purple cloth-covered box. Prospectus and Limited Editions Club Newsletter laid in.

SHAKESPEARE: THE INVENTION OF THE HUMAN

London, England: Fourth Estate, 1998. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/As New Dust Jacket.. London, England: Fourth Estate, 1998. Hardcover. As New/As New. First Edition/First Printing. 745 pages. Massive collection of essays on subject. One of the greatest books of the 20th century. The first appearance of the title in the United Kingdom. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now very scarce. Presents the crowning achievement of Harold Bloom's genius, a 745-page celebration ("commentary" does not quite do justice in this context) of the one writer that he, controversially, regards as the greatest literary artist of all time. The central narrative/theme of Harold Bloom's life-work is the literary (rather than philosophical) struggle between "authority" and "personality". Whether it's specifically between orthodoxy versus heresy, The Holy Bible versus The Book of J, normative Judaism/Christianity versus mystical Kabbalah/Gnosticism, "personality" is triumphant because it is more expressive, more subtle, and more multitudinous whereas "authority" inevitably becomes predictable, rigid, and ossified. The idea of "personality" is not just articulated but sublimely dramatized by Bloom. But he credits Shakespeare with inventing it, and devotes a definitive essay to each of the plays, emphasizing their "personality" and influence on all subsequent literature, feeling, and thought. "Before Bloom is done with us, he has made us wonder whether his vision of Shakespeare's influence on the whole of our lives might not simply be the sobering truth. A feast of arguments and insights, written with engaging frankness and affecting immediacy. Filled with literally thousands of insights" (Daniel Hintzsche) . Bloom is as inexhaustible as Shakespeare. While he has all but turned Shakespeare into his personal vision of God, the one personality-turned-authority he can believe in and revere, only a genius of his stature could engage in such "hero-worship" without ever surrendering his critical faculties. He has made Bardolatry possible again. "The ultimate use of Shakespeare is to let him teach you to think too well and towards whatever truth you can sustain without perishing" (Harold Bloom) . An absolute "must-have" title for Harold Bloom and William Shakespeare collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by Harold Bloom. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page, as almost all other copies available online are. Bloom's signature (which has become unsteady with old age and illness) is one of the most beautiful we have ever seen. This title is now highly collectible. As far as we know, this is the only signed copy of the First British Edition/First Printing available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. While the American is the true First Edition, there is surely no question that a signed copy of the British Edition is very special indeed. A rare signed copy thus. The greatest living literary critic on the greatest writer of all time. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER HAROLD BLOOM TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1841150479.

        Theseus

Covelo, CA: Yolla Bolly Press, 1998. Hard Cover. Fine in Fine Box. Hard Cover. XVIII of 20 copies. Deluxe edition. Signed by the artist. Includes unbound signed original lithograph of an image by Goodman not printed in the book. An additional 85 copies issued in the regular edition (in slipcase without extra print, in different binding). "This is the last of Gide's fictional works, and arguably, one of the finest ... Unwilling to undertake a simple retelling of the legend, Gide conjures Theseus as the aging monarch and allows him to reminisce about his life. The King of Athens recalls his exploits as a young prince who purges Attica of monsters (and maidens of their virginity). We see him submit to captivity in the Cretan court of King Minos where he wins the heart of Ariadne, the King's daughter, who helps him navigate the labyrinth and destory the fearsome Minotaur. Gide's Theseus is devoid of pretense and disarmingly candid as he recalls his life. Alternately amusing and profound, this is the work of a writer at the height of his power" (Yolla Bolly Press). This deluxe edition is bound in full grey leather with raised patten suggestive of a labyrinth. It is illustrated with seven full page allegorical lithographs by Philadelphia painter and sculptor, Sidney Goodman. Goodman's work is represented in the MoMA, Whiney, Metropolitan Musuem of Art, and many other institutions. Letterpress printed on English Somerset Velvet paper with endpapers handmade in Italy. Housed in a handmade box of Portuguese cork over boards, a unique design with interlocking two-part lid created by Peggy Gotthold of the Foolscap Press. Includes prospectus, order form, photograph of the book, and statement about the artist. 60 pages. PRI/061213.

        The Graves: Srebrenica and Vukovar

New York: Scalo, 1998. First edition of this moving record of the atrocites that befell the Balkans in the 1990's. Thick octavo, original illustrated boards. Signed by all three contributers. Signed by photographer Gilles Peress, Eric Stover and Justice Richard Goldstone. In fine condition. Peress described his art well when he said, "I work much more like a forensic photographer in a certain way, collecting evidence. I've started to take more still lifes, like a police photographer, collecting evidence as a witness. I've started to borrow a different strategy than that of the classic photojournalist. The work is much more factual and much less about good photography. I don't care that much anymore about "good photography." I'm gathering evidence for history, so that we remember" (U.S. News).

The Iconography of Manhattan Island, 1498-1909: Compiled from Original Sources and Illustrated by Photo-Intaglio Reproductions of Important Maps, Plans, Views, and Documents in Public and Private

Martino Publishing, 1998-01. Hardcover. New. Brand new. 6 volume set. Fine. Hardcover in shrink wrap. Reprint edition of Stokes' magnificent and comprehensive illustrated history of Manhattan. This sweeping survey, originally published over the span 1915 to 1928, is divided into two parts, with volumes one and two comprising the first. These initial volumes present historical summaries, followed by exquisite plates and thorough plate descriptions. Part two repeats this pattern in volume three; presents a detailed chronology of historical events and personages in volumes four and five; and concludes with an addenda, bibliography, and index to the entire work in volume six. Interspersed throughout are the maps, documents, photographs, engravings, illustrations, etc. that Stokes and his assistants assembled from countless original sources. The quality and scope of visual representations truly befits its vast subject, Manhattan. Those concerned with the legal aspects of colonial and New York history will be particularly interested in the wealth of material from original sources to be found throughout these six volumes. The historical chronologies and detailed descriptions are enhanced by the facsimile plates which portray records and documents showing charters, ordinances and proclamations, etc.; handbills, broadsides, surveys, plans, portraits and numerous illustrations relating to the legal history of New York from the "period of discovery" through the Dutch and English settlements and the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, reconstruction, industrialization through to the year 1909: the establishment of the municipal government and the New York legislature; court houses and public buildings; abolitionist clubs, meetings and riots; prisons, criminal punishments and court appeals; bank, insurance and financial institutions; various commissions and associations; bills of exchange and credit; the British and Continental Army; the Continental and U.S. Congress; Indian treaties, international treaties; ferry and water rights; laws, duties and licenses relating to gambling, liquor, and the lottery; as well as taxes, patents, trade and shipping; an extensive section covering original land grants and farms with maps and text of grants citing names of land holders; religious rights such as the first legal case of anti-Semitism; numerous cases regarding slavery and negroes; cases about women, such as the case of a woman who was whipped by order of the court; immigration and alien registration, real estate holdings, crime; legal printers such as William Bradford, John Peter Zenger and James Parker; the establishment of law schools and universities; national political personages such as George Washington, Abigail and John Adams, James Buchanan, Benjamin Franklin, Ulysses S. Senza titolo (ma Uomini a cavallo nel fiume).

Ottima conservazione.

        PORNOGRAPHIC ("POR'NE-GRAF'IK")

Santa Fe, NM: Twin Palms Publishing, 1998. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. Santa Fe, NM: Twin Palms Publishing, 1998. Hardcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 102 pages. Landmark collection of sex pictures. Now considered a contemporary erotic art photography classic. Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition of 50 numbered and signed copies. Should not be confused with the Limited Edition of 4000 copies. The Deluxe Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Ken Probst and Jack Woody: Regular-sized volume format in oblong shape. Glossy red hard boards with black titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Ken Probst. "Ballad For the Beautiful Boy Or Why I Like Photography" by A. M. Homes. List of Plates appended at the end. Black cloth clamshell box. 10 X 8 inch original silver-gelatin print mounted on pristine-white boards and laid into the box. Printed on thick coated stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents "behind-the-scenes" photographs of the adult-entertainment stars "in action". Popularly (and aptly) known as The Valley, an actual place as well as the metaphorical opposite of The Heights of Hollywood, American pornography is a multi-billion-dollar industry and one of this puritanical country's most reliable exports. Ken Probst was hired to photograph film actors for publicity pictures and video boxes. Once on the sets, he began to photograph behind-the-scenes, revealing the absurdity, pathos, and humanity of the business. Despite its ironic stance, it is a highly erotic collection, and provides a remarkable glimpse of the mechanics of manufacturing desire. That is why the original print that the Deluxe Edition comes with is stunning: The cameraman is visible in the foreground but only as a silhouette while the male actors (who are in the throes of anal sex) in the background are brightly lit, reversing the focussed foreground/blurred background photographic convention, in keeping with Probst's point about the "behind-the-scenes" versus "in action" dynamic of desire. One of the most unusual erotica books ever published, this is a "must-have" edition for Ken Probst and erotic art photography collectors. This copy of the Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition is Number 50/50, indicated as such on the Back Limitation Page, the very last copy in the edition, and it is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the page opposite the very first plate by Ken Probst. It comes with an archival 10 X 8 inch silver-gelatin print that is mounted in white boards, also very prominently and beautifully numbered, titled, and signed in pencil by the photographer: "Brad & Corey 50/50 Ken Probst". This title is now highly collectible. This is one of few copies of the Deluxe Edition still available online, is still in the publisher's original shrinkwrap, and has absolutely no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 48 duotone plates, 1 original print. One of the most brilliant living American photographers. A flawless collectible copy.
