Covelo, CA: Yolla Bolly Press, 1998. Hard Cover. Fine in Fine Box. Hard Cover. XVIII of 20 copies. Deluxe edition. Signed by the artist. Includes unbound signed original lithograph of an image by Goodman not printed in the book. An additional 85 copies issued in the regular edition (in slipcase without extra print, in different binding). "This is the last of Gide's fictional works, and arguably, one of the finest ... Unwilling to undertake a simple retelling of the legend, Gide conjures Theseus as the aging monarch and allows him to reminisce about his life. The King of Athens recalls his exploits as a young prince who purges Attica of monsters (and maidens of their virginity). We see him submit to captivity in the Cretan court of King Minos where he wins the heart of Ariadne, the King's daughter, who helps him navigate the labyrinth and destory the fearsome Minotaur. Gide's Theseus is devoid of pretense and disarmingly candid as he recalls his life. Alternately amusing and profound, this is the work of a writer at the height of his power" (Yolla Bolly Press). This deluxe edition is bound in full grey leather with raised patten suggestive of a labyrinth. It is illustrated with seven full page allegorical lithographs by Philadelphia painter and sculptor, Sidney Goodman. Goodman's work is represented in the MoMA, Whiney, Metropolitan Musuem of Art, and many other institutions. Letterpress printed on English Somerset Velvet paper with endpapers handmade in Italy. Housed in a handmade box of Portuguese cork over boards, a unique design with interlocking two-part lid created by Peggy Gotthold of the Foolscap Press. Includes prospectus, order form, photograph of the book, and statement about the artist. 60 pages. PRI/061213.

        The Graves: Srebrenica and Vukovar

New York: Scalo, 1998. First edition of this moving record of the atrocites that befell the Balkans in the 1990's. Thick octavo, original illustrated boards. Signed by all three contributers. Signed by photographer Gilles Peress, Eric Stover and Justice Richard Goldstone. In fine condition. Peress described his art well when he said, "I work much more like a forensic photographer in a certain way, collecting evidence. I've started to take more still lifes, like a police photographer, collecting evidence as a witness. I've started to borrow a different strategy than that of the classic photojournalist. The work is much more factual and much less about good photography. I don't care that much anymore about "good photography." I'm gathering evidence for history, so that we remember" (U.S. News).

The Iconography of Manhattan Island, 1498-1909: Compiled from Original Sources and Illustrated by Photo-Intaglio Reproductions of Important Maps, Plans, Views, and Documents in Public and Private

Martino Publishing, 1998-01. Hardcover. New. Brand new. 6 volume set. Fine. Hardcover in shrink wrap. Reprint edition of Stokes' magnificent and comprehensive illustrated history of Manhattan. This sweeping survey, originally published over the span 1915 to 1928, is divided into two parts, with volumes one and two comprising the first. These initial volumes present historical summaries, followed by exquisite plates and thorough plate descriptions. Part two repeats this pattern in volume three; presents a detailed chronology of historical events and personages in volumes four and five; and concludes with an addenda, bibliography, and index to the entire work in volume six. Interspersed throughout are the maps, documents, photographs, engravings, illustrations, etc. that Stokes and his assistants assembled from countless original sources. The quality and scope of visual representations truly befits its vast subject, Manhattan. Those concerned with the legal aspects of colonial and New York history will be particularly interested in the wealth of material from original sources to be found throughout these six volumes. The historical chronologies and detailed descriptions are enhanced by the facsimile plates which portray records and documents showing charters, ordinances and proclamations, etc.; handbills, broadsides, surveys, plans, portraits and numerous illustrations relating to the legal history of New York from the "period of discovery" through the Dutch and English settlements and the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, reconstruction, industrialization through to the year 1909: the establishment of the municipal government and the New York legislature; court houses and public buildings; abolitionist clubs, meetings and riots; prisons, criminal punishments and court appeals; bank, insurance and financial institutions; various commissions and associations; bills of exchange and credit; the British and Continental Army; the Continental and U.S. Congress; Indian treaties, international treaties; ferry and water rights; laws, duties and licenses relating to gambling, liquor, and the lottery; as well as taxes, patents, trade and shipping; an extensive section covering original land grants and farms with maps and text of grants citing names of land holders; religious rights such as the first legal case of anti-Semitism; numerous cases regarding slavery and negroes; cases about women, such as the case of a woman who was whipped by order of the court; immigration and alien registration, real estate holdings, crime; legal printers such as William Bradford, John Peter Zenger and James Parker; the establishment of law schools and universities; national political personages such as George Washington, Abigail and John Adams, James Buchanan, Benjamin Franklin, Ulysses S. Grant, James Madison, and Theodore Roosevelt; colonial governors such as Petrus Stuyvesant; legal personages such as James Kent; state and city officials and politicians, political parties, committees and elections.

Ottima conservazione.

Santa Fe, NM: Twin Palms Publishing, 1998. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. Santa Fe, NM: Twin Palms Publishing, 1998. Hardcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 102 pages. Landmark collection of sex pictures. Now considered a contemporary erotic art photography classic. Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition of 50 numbered and signed copies. Should not be confused with the Limited Edition of 4000 copies. The Deluxe Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Ken Probst and Jack Woody: Regular-sized volume format in oblong shape. Glossy red hard boards with black titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Ken Probst. "Ballad For the Beautiful Boy Or Why I Like Photography" by A. M. Homes. List of Plates appended at the end. Black cloth clamshell box. 10 X 8 inch original silver-gelatin print mounted on pristine-white boards and laid into the box. Printed on thick coated stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents "behind-the-scenes" photographs of the adult-entertainment stars "in action". Popularly (and aptly) known as The Valley, an actual place as well as the metaphorical opposite of The Heights of Hollywood, American pornography is a multi-billion-dollar industry and one of this puritanical country&#39;s most reliable exports. Ken Probst was hired to photograph film actors for publicity pictures and video boxes. Once on the sets, he began to photograph behind-the-scenes, revealing the absurdity, pathos, and humanity of the business. Despite its ironic stance, it is a highly erotic collection, and provides a remarkable glimpse of the mechanics of manufacturing desire. That is why the original print that the Deluxe Edition comes with is stunning: The cameraman is visible in the foreground but only as a silhouette while the male actors (who are in the throes of anal sex) in the background are brightly lit, reversing the focussed foreground/blurred background photographic convention, in keeping with Probst&#39;s point about the "behind-the-scenes" versus "in action" dynamic of desire. One of the most unusual erotica books ever published, this is a "must-have" edition for Ken Probst and erotic art photography collectors. <b><i> This copy of the Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition is Number 50/50, indicated as such on the Back Limitation Page, the very last copy in the edition, and it is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the page opposite the very first plate by Ken Probst. It comes with an archival 10 X 8 inch silver-gelatin print that is mounted in white boards, also very prominently and beautifully numbered, titled, and signed in pencil by the photographer: "Brad & Corey 50/50 Ken Probst". This title is now highly collectible. This is one of few copies of the Deluxe Edition still available online, is still in the publisher&#39;s original shrinkwrap, and has absolutely no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. </b></i> 48 duotone plates, 1 original print. One of the most brilliant living American photographers. A flawless collectible copy. Number 24 of "100 possible copies" hand-set in 14pt Walbaum, printed on Zerkall mould-made paper and signed by the artist/author on the limitation page. The book is contained in it&#39;s original slipcase. , Miriam MacGregor was born in India, moving to England when she was ten. Her introduction to wood engraving came while at the Central School of Art, where she encountered the engraver, John Lawrence, and marvelled at the speed and fluency with which he worked. Later, while working as a typographer for B.T. Batsford, she began to produce engravings of her own. In 1976, having attended an open day at the Whittington Press, she offered her services as a compositor and, while the press didn&#39;t really need one, John Randle was so impressed by her engravings that he decided to take her on. Working at the press helped her to focus on engraving and in 1977 she illustrated her first book for the press (&#39;Cotswold Days&#39;, 1977). Many more have followed and she&#39;s also illustrated a number of books for the Folio Society. She has produced two major pochoir books for the Whittington Press, &#39;New Castle&#39; (1998) and &#39;A House by the Sea&#39; (2005) and, in these brilliantly colourful books, Miriam Macgregor has taken the art of pochoir illustration to new heights., 4to 11" - 13" tall, 20 pp .

Flat signed by author on title page. First editions/first printings have no mention of any awards on the cover and have the number line ending with a 1 Publisher Notes A novel of angels, wine, and love without boundaries set in nineteenth-century Burgundy. One summer night in 1808, Sobran Jodeau sets out to drown his love sorrows in his family&#39;s vineyard. Drunk, he stumbles on an angel: "Someone had set a statue down on the ridge. Sobran blinked and swayed. For a second he saw what he knew--gilt, paint and varnish, the sculpted labial eye of a church statue. Then he swooned while still walking forward, and the angel stood quickly to catch him." Once he gets over his shock, Sobran decides that Xas, the male angel, is his guardian sent to counsel him on everything from marriage to wine production. But Xas turns out to be a far more mysterious character. A favorite of both God and Satan, he is, unlike other angels, allowed to go freely about the world, collecting earthly roses for his garden. Sobran and Xas agree to meet on this night every year of Sobran&#39;s life, and eventually man and angel fall in passionate love, complicating both their lives. Compelling and erotic, The Vintner&#39;s Luck explores a decidedly unorthodox love story as Sobran eventually comes to love and be loved by both Xas and the young Countess de Valday, his friend and employer at the neighboring château.
