        Dream Book and Journal

      - Octavo blank book. Unpaged, about 80 leaves used, with many items inserted, or affixed to leaves. Moderate wear, very good. A dream book and journal kept by the artist Helen Sadowski. Sadowski was educated at the Philadelphia College of Art but was later institutionalized at the Creedmoor Psychiatric Center in Queens, New York. Creedmoor featured an artists' program called the Living Museum. Sadowski, who has exhibited at a Soho Gallery, was one of six artists profiled in Academy Award-winning documentarian Jessica Yu's 1998 film *The Living Museum*, which was nominated for a Sundance Grand Jury Prize. The artist has illustrated the cloth covers of the book and embellished the interior with many accomplished drawings, collages, inserted illustrations, poetry, accounts of her dreams, medical prescriptions, and calligraphy. A fascinating and accomplished journal of outsider art that illustrates well the link between art and madness. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Pool of Tears [Alice in Wonderland series]

1998 Gelatin silver print, measuring 22 3/8 x 18 inches (568 x 458 mm). Printed in 1998, number 4 of 30. Titled, dated and signed by artist on recto. Photograph depicts the book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, opened to John Tenniel's illustration of Alice in her pool of tears, with the White Rabbit in the background- the book is in a puddle of water. Fine, matted and framed in black wood frame, protected by UV-resistant plexi, measuring 29 ½ x 25 inches. Abelardo Morell's photography has been influenced by his love of books. In both his Alice in Wonderland and Books and Maps series, he showcases the book-as-object in creative and innovative ways, often as it would be seen from a child's perspective. Of Alice in Wonderland, he states: "When I began to make photographs illustrating this book by Lewis Carroll I had in mind that books themselves should form the architecture and landscape where the story takes place. Because books belong to both the physical and imaginary worlds, I thought that they might serve Lewis Carroll's tale well. Traveling to Wonderland could seem, after all, to be an experience very much like that of walking across the pages of a story- like going deep into a book." His publications include Alice in Wonderland (1998) by Dutton Children's Books and A Book of Books (2002) by the Bulfinch Press. A Book of Books is described as "a bibliophile's dream" by The New York Times, and received this glowing review by Nicholas Basbanes, author of A Gentle Madness and On Paper: "Abelardo Morell's photographs are living proof that books are much more than carriers of information, that they are precious artifacts in their own right, with stories quite apart from their texts to tell. A dazzling performance, arriving, as it happens, in the nick of time. Nicely done." Morell was born in Cuba and immigrated to the US when he was 14. He studied at Bowdoin College and received an MFA from The Yale University of Art. His work has been collected and shown at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Museum of Modern Art, The Boston Museum of Fine Art, The Chicago Art Institute, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Victoria & Albert Museum, and over 70 others. In addition to his photographs of books, he has received wide acclaim for his Camera Obscura series, in which he projects outdoor scenes onto indoor spaces by use of a tent camera he invented. The Pool of Tears was printed using the gelatin silver process, the most common method for making black and white photographs since the 1890s. The printing process, first introduced in 1871 by Richard Leach Maddox, involves creating an image of metallic silver embedded in a gelatin coating. Due to the sensitivity of the materials used to make them, gelatin silver prints are prone to toning and discoloration, increasing the rarity of fine quality prints.. 1st Edition. Gelatin Silver Print. Fine. Illus. by Tenniel, John. 22 3/8 x 18 inches (568 x 458 mm).

AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF RED: A NOVEL IN VERSE

New York City, NY: Alfred A. Knopf, 1998. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. New York City, NY: Alfred A. Knopf, 1998. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 150 pages. The author&#39;s debut novel in verse. One of the greatest books of our time. Review Copy. Review Material laid-in. The number of Review Copies issued by the publisher to selected book reviewers was a handful. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a very small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Anne Carson&#39;s "Autobiography of Red", her breakthrough novel and beloved masterpiece. "Bridges the gap between Classicism and the Modern, poetry and prose, with a volcanic journey into the soul of a winged red monster named Geryon. There is a strong mixture of whimsy and sadness in Geryon&#39;s story. He is tormented as a boy by his brother, escapes to a parallel world of photography, and falls in love with Herakles, a golden young man who leaves Geryon at the peak of infatuation. Geryon retreats ever further into the world created by his camera, until that glass house is suddenly and irrevocably shattered by Herakles&#39; return. Running throughout is Geryon&#39;s fascination with his wings, the color red, and the fantastic accident of who he is. A deceptively simple narrative layered with currents of meaning and emotion" (Publisher&#39;s blurb). Anne Carson has published a sequel-of-sorts, and she has something illuminating to say, about books and sequels in general: "I began to wonder what happened to them in later life. &#39;Red Doc>&#39; (2013) continues their adventures in a very different style and with changed names. To live past the end of your myth is a perilous thing" (Anne Carson). "A spellbinding achievement" (Susan Sontag). "Carson is a wisdom writer" (Harold Bloom). "The most exciting poet writing in English today" (Michael Ondaatje). An absolute "must-have" title for Anne Carson collectors. <b><i> This is a Review Copy, and it is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed (initialled, as is her custom), dated, and inscribed in black ink-pen on the title page by the author: "Respectfully, A C 2008". Laid-in is a pristine copy of the Review Slip. Anne Carson rarely does public appearances/signings, making signed copies of her books quite scarce. This title is a contemporary classic. As far as we know, this is the only signed Review Copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Many copies available online have major flaws (partly because the cream DJ soils easily), but are still high-priced because the First Edition is rare. Fine copies available online command as much as $800. A very rare signed copy thus. </b></i> One of the greatest living poet/writers. A fine collectible copy.       Budapest: Magyar Konyvklub. (1998). The first Hungarian edition of Vonnegut's final novel. Signed by Vonnegut in the year of publication and further illustrated with a smoking self-caricature on the title page, facing Vonnegut's portrait of Kilgore Trout, which serves as a frontispiece illustration for this edition. Fine in pictorial boards, without dust jacket, as issued. In custom slipcase. Probably the only signed Hungarian edition of this title to come on the market, ever, and although Vonnegut was liberal with his self-caricatures, ones that picture him smoking are scarce. .         Snowblind

Edinburgh: Rebel Inc. , 1998. First edition 8vo bound in mirror metal mirror boards and printed slipcase, with facsimile credit card on a ribbon as well as a real $100 bill rolled up and housed into the interior. One of 1000 copies, the entire edition, signed by all three contributors. Overwrought, ridiculous and still somehow sublime reprint edition of the classic account of the cocaine trade. Each of the $100 bills included in the book was obtained directly from the US treasury, and the last three digits of the serial number matched the limitation number of the book. This is a bright and brilliant copy, with the C note still intact and corresponding to the limitation number, and the mirror boards still bright - unlike copies you used to see in New York City which would have the bill missing and the boards scratched to hell, smudged and licked. The slipcase has a short, slight tear to the paper over the boards at one edge, else fine as well.
