        Takashi Homma: Tokyo Suburbia [SIGNED]

Korinsha Press & Co., Ltd., Tokyo 1998 - First edition, first printing. Signed in black marker (in English) on the last page by Homma. Hardcover. Photographically illustrated laminated paper-covered boards with title printed in black and white on the cover and spine; no dust jacket as issued. Photographs by Takashi Homma. Essays (in Japanese and English) by Momoyo Kaijima and Shinji Miyadai. Includes a key to the plates and a laid-in 20-pp. booklet featuring the essays, an illustrated list of plates keyed to the Tokyo monorail map, a brief bibliography and an exhibition history. Designed by Yasukazu Arai. Unpaginated (96 pp.), with 49 four-color plates printed in Japan as 2-page spreads on board-stock pages by Korinsha Co., Ltd. 11-1/4 x 8-1/2 inches. CONDITION: Fine (very light surface wear and the slightest of wear to the extremities). Tokyo is the most densely populated, largest city in the world. Yet the people remain respectful, civilized, and safe. More than 3 million people commute through Shinjuku station each day, without incident. There is no litter, no graffiti, no sound, except the tapping on cell phones. It is necessary to imagine the enormous patience, accommodation, and conformity required for citizens to navigate such vastness, within a rapidly moving sea of people. People live primarily in apartments in Tokyo. It is prohibitively expensive to live otherwise. It is the most expensive city in the world. To begin to understand Takashi Homma's work, it is helpful to understand the context of where the work is made. In the west, we aspire to own land, to have space, to assert our "individuality." This is in stark contrast to Tokyo. Takashi Homma's photographs are fascinating on many levels. He accomplishes the impossible, remarkable feat of photographing monumental expanses of high rises, exquisite in detail, which exude a sense of buoyancy and celebration. This is juxtaposed with images of individuals in private spaces, in secrecy, in their bedrooms, in repose, children looking directly into the camera, yet not confrontational, rather, patient, almost inquisitive. He photographs the messiness of peoples' lives with a gentle ironic observation. This book is gorgeously printed, and its desperate beauty is at once haunting and comforting. [Cited in Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, The Photobook: A History, Volume II. (London and New York: Phaidon, 2006).] From Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, ".[A]t first glance, we can make the standard response: suburbs are soulless places, the same the world over, deadening, artificial environments to which only airheads could aspire, bland facades behind which lie nothing but stunted lives and unrequited passions. But Homma's suburbs seem also to evince more positive qualities. Like Ebenezer Howard's original vision of the garden city, they seem remarkably well landscaped, luxuriant and well manicured, with little hint of the graffiti and rubbish that accompany the suburbs of the West. The sun seems always to be shining and there are McDonald's aplenty.[T]he tone of Homma's book is ambiguous enough both to intrigue us and keep us guessing."

The iconography of Manhattan Island 1498-1909. Compiled from original sources. N.Y., 1915-28. Reprint.

      - Union, 1998. 6 volumes. Large 4to. Cloth. With numerous maps, plans and plates (some in colours; many folding).* 'The iconography of Manhattan Island represents the result of a two-fold purpose: to collect, to condense, and to arrange systematically and in just proportion, within the confines of a single work, the facts and incidents which are of the greatest consequence and interests in the history of New York, with special reference to its topographical features and the physical development of the island; and to illustrate this material by the best reproductions obtainable of important and interesting contemporary maps, plans, views, and documents; in other words, to produce a book dealing with the physical rather than with the personal side of the city's history, which shall be at the same time useful and interesting to the student of history, the antiquarian, the collector, and the general public' (Preface).         BILL JACOBSON: 1989-1997 - Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition With Original Silver-Gelatin Print - ONLY COPY ONLINE

Santa Fe, NM: Twin Palms Publishing, 1998 - 1st Printing. Signed. Unpaginated. Published in 1998. The artist/photographer's breakthrough debut collection. One of the greatest photography books of the 20th century. Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition of 50 numbered and signed copies. Should not be confused with all other editions. The Deluxe Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Bill Jacobson and Jack Woody: Oversize-volume format. Pale gray cloth boards with black titles on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Bill Jacobson. Short story, "Lost Profile", by Klauss Kertess. Original silver-gelatin print laid into the box. Matching pale gray cloth clamshell box. Printed on thick coated stock paper by EBS in Verona, Italy to the highest standards. In white pictorial DJ, as issued. Presents the artist/photographer's dramatic sequence of images that test the boundaries of the portrait by a singular blurring/effacing technique applied to all of the photographs. The images appear to be eerie at first, but as one moves progressively through the complete series (which are grouped into three suites, "Interim Portrait", "Song of Sentient Beings", and "Thought Series"), one cannot help but be deeply moved by the cumulative and overwhelming power of Bill Jacobson's achievement. Jacobson has accomplished nothing less than a re-imagination of every human being as a presence who is also an absence: We are and we are not at the same time. As Ingmar Bergman once said of "Persona", perhaps the greatest film of the 20th century, it is not so much a question of being or nothing ("to be or not to be"). Rather, it is a question of being-as-nothing. Jacobson has explicitly said that the book is one of loss and remembrance, especially of friends and lovers, that is, nothing-ness. The images are deepened rather than effaced by the unusual blurring technique that the photographer has used. "I started taking photographs nearly twenty-five years ago. Since then my work has been an ongoing meditation around desire, loss, and the role of photography as a vehicle for remembrance. My pictures often function as a metaphor for the way the mind works: Simultaneously collecting images while letting others go, fading in the way memories fade, and alluding to the fact that, historically, photographs have faded as well" (Bill Jacobson). An absolute "must-have" edition for Bill Jacobson collectors. This copy is Number 50, the very last copy of the Deluxe Edition, indicated as such on the Back Limitation Page, and it is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Bill Jacobson. Laid-in is a silver-gelatin print that is mounted, framed, and protected with a glassine paper overlay. It is also very prominently and beautifully signed, titled, dated, and numbered in pencil on verso by the artist/photographer: "bill jacobson thought series # 712 1993 (twin palms) 50/50". Jacobson deliberately used all-lower-case letters for the inscription. This title is now highly collectible. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the Deluxe Edition available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 52 tritone plates, 1 original print. One of the most brilliant living American artist/photographers. A fine collectible copy.         Dream Book and Journal

Octavo blank book. Unpaged, about 80 leaves used, with many items inserted, or affixed to leaves. Moderate wear, very good. A dream book and journal kept by the artist Helen Sadowski. Sadowski was educated at the Philadelphia College of Art but was later institutionalized at the Creedmoor Psychiatric Center in Queens, New York. Creedmoor featured an artists' program called the Living Museum. Sadowski, who has exhibited at a Soho Gallery, was one of six artists profiled in Academy Award-winning documentarian Jessica Yu's 1998 film The Living Museum, which was nominated for a Sundance Grand Jury Prize. The artist has illustrated the cloth covers of the book and embellished the interior with many accomplished drawings, collages, inserted illustrations, poetry, accounts of her dreams, medical prescriptions, and calligraphy. A fascinating and accomplished journal of outsider art that illustrates well the link between art and madness. .

        Taking My Time: Limited Edition

Phaidon, 2012. 2nd Revised edition. Hardback. New. <p>With over 650 pages and featuring nearly 600 images, <i>Taking My Time</i> provides an unprecedented overview and insight into the mind and work of the iconic American photographer Joel Meyerowitz. <br /><br /> Beautifully sequenced and edited with Meyerowitz himself, and including his own personal accounts, this extensive and personal selection charts his complete development as a photographer and creates an unbeatable account of a significant evolution in photography. As an exceptionally diverse and renowned practitioner of his craft, Joel Meyerowitz is best known for pioneering the use of colour photography as an art form, as well as for his witty and subversive ability to capture off-guard moments with humour and affection. <br /><br /> Beginning his photographic career on the bustling streets of New York in the 1960s, Meyerowitz translated the chaos of the city &#8211; alive with lights and cars, businessmen and street vendors &#8211; into images that are both carefully choreographed and wonderfully accidental. This energy and sense of heightened awareness pervade all of his photographs. It was as an early advocate of colour photography that Meyerowitz has had greatest influence, for he was instrumental in changing the attitude towards the use of colour from one of resistance to nearly universal acceptance. One of photography&#39;s most articulate practitioners, Meyerowitz&#39;s career has taken a highly diverse trajectory, to create a unique, intimate body of work, which explores his own life and artistic journey. <br /><br /> Showing the growth and development of Meyerowitz and his photography, <i>Taking My Time</i> is arranged into discrete bodies of work, split over two volumes, which explore the pivotal points of Meyerowitz&#39;s career as his evolution as an observer of human life as it unfolds. The reader is afforded access to his complete oeuvre, from his formative years in 1960s New York, to his travels around Europe, Cape Cod in the 1970s, St Louis and beyond. Meyerowitz&#39;s experiments in both colour and black and white highlight the studied intricacies of his art as he explores themes of human intimacy, architecture, light and space. In later years his sheer persistence and integrity made Meyerowitz the only photographer granted access to the World Trade Center site and his work serves as an official archive and indispensable tribute, not only to the lives lost, but also to the heroism, compassion and solidarity of those dedicated to the clean up process, aligning the work with Meyerowitz&#39;s continued study of great human affection. <br /><br /> <i>Taking my Time</i> also covers his most recent work in Japan, Tuscany and the Legacy series in the parks of New York City, as well as the never-before-published series &#39;The Elements&#39;. In 1998, Meyerowitz produced and directed his first film, <i>Pop</i>, an intimate diary of a three-week road trip he made with his son, Sasha, and his father, Hy, who suffered from Alzheimers. It is both an open-eyed look at ageing and a meditation on the significance of memory and is featured in the book - including a DVD of the original film and in a unique insert as a kind of &#39;graphic novel&#39;, along with another special insert for Meyerowitz&#39;s lesson in colour versus black and white photography. <br /><br /> The book features a newly-commissioned introduction by leading photography writer Francesco Zanot, charting the development of Meyerowitz&#39;s career and setting his work within the broader context of the history of photography. <br /><br /> Uniquely, Meyerowitz himself will contribute short texts to open each section of the book that, in his authoritative and lucid voice, explain the position, relevance and ideas behind the development in his work. Defining images from throughout his career are also investigated with expanded, personal captions written by the photographer. Meyerowitz has always captured moments that would pass other photographers by: noticing the precarious prospects of a child within a crowd, the inadvertent positioning of strangers beside one another and the macabre connotations of a mattress trussed up on a car roof. <br /><br /> While Meyerowitz photographs the everyday there&#39;s often a note of chaos or surprise in his images &#8211; in the way a Parisian man lies sprawled over the pavement while another steps nonchalantly over him, the manner in which a ball of fire hovers over inexpressive passers-by and the absurdly-dressed posturing of his fellow holiday-makers in Cape Cod. <br /><br /> The back of the book will include an index and comprehensive chronology and bibliography of Meyerowitz, including books, shows and awards.</p>SKU: MM-40016650; EAN: 9780714865027

Pastel portrait of Raymond Carver and Richard Ford

[1998]. Large pastel drawing of Raymond Carver and Richard Ford. Image size 33" x 30.25"; and has been framed and glazed to 39.25" x 36.75" in a black wooden frame. Fine. Excellent large portrait of the two allied authors. This image was used as the lead illustration in Ford&#39;s long profile of Carver, "Good Raymond," that appeared in the October 5, 1998 issue of The New Yorker. A finished portrait, the only variation in the published version of the artwork was that Merkin&#39;s signature was digitally moved slightly to one side. Merkin was a highly talented artist who was known for his wide variety of activities and interests: as a fashion horse and beau brummell who wrote a monthly column for Gentleman&#39;s Quarterly, as a noted collector of erotica, and as a scholarly student of early baseball. .

Includes a selected biography and an illustrated list of plates. Designed, edited and produced by Christopher Coppock. Unpaginated (48 pp.), Leporello (accordion-fold), with 16 tritone plates (each are 2-page spreads), beautifully printed on 170gsm Parilux Matt White paper by Leeds Photo Litho. 9-1/4 x 11-1/4 inches. This first edition was limited to 1000 copies. Published on the occasion of a 1998-1999 exhibition at the National Museums & Galleries of Wales, Cardiff, the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Swansea and traveling to other locations. CONDITION: Near Fine (toning to the front cover and to the rear cover near the spine, slight bump to lower left rear corner, else Fine). From the essay by Derrick Price: "From the early 1980s Josef Koudelka was traversing the world in search of man-made and industrial landscapes which personified our uneasy relationship with nature. Memorable projects (as of 1998) include two major bodies of work in France.photographing the remnants of the Berlin Wall in 1990; the war-torn centre of Beirut in 1992; and after he was able to return to Czechoslovakia from exile, he started to photograph one of the most devastated landscapes in Europe, commonly known as the Black Triangle, an area which borders the Czech Republic, Germany and Poland. In 1994 thirty-four large panoramic photographs were published in an accompanying book of the same name, which reveal a fractured, littered, torn land which contains villages that have been shattered by the rapacity of extractive industry. To travel to Cardiff and South Wales to record the aftermath of industry on this landscape was clearly a natural extension for Koudleka's photographic practice; as was the employment of the epic panoramic format which he had developed and refined so successfully from the mid-1980s.Koudelka works as though he is assembling a formal alphabet of derelictions: one which maintains that objects have lost their old, familiar utility and are made strange by being dislocated, stranded, broken, sunk in mud, abandoned. Koudelka has often been praised for his ability to show us the affliction of everyday existence, but these images, grounded in the land itself, take on a monumental quality.Koudelka examines the landscape as though he were searching for its essential elements and the big, panoramic photographs impose an aesthetic order upon the scenes of bleakness and desuetude in a way which lends them both grandeur and poignancy."
