University of Exeter Press 1998. - FIRST (and only) EDITION. A scarce early essay on Greek mythology from the later author of the popular Harry Potter series, appearing on pp 25-7. It was the author's first non-Harry Potter- related writing to be published and is exceptionally scarce, only intended for circulation at Exeter University. Publisher's printed orange wraps, fine condition. Together with Newsletter No.10 from the Classics department, which congratulates Joanne Rowling on 'her marvellously imaginative children's novel'.         15 Kyoto Gardens.

Poestenkill, NY Kaldewey Press 1998 - Quarto. 28pp., frenchfold. One of forty copies, signed by the author/artist/printer, Gunnar Kaldewey. This book is inspired by the notion of "nature as art," and was created after Kaldewey spent three months living in a traditional Japanese wooden house in Kyoto, studying the art of the Japanese garden as the seasons changed from winter to summer. The first text page poetically states: "Books are like gardens that one can carry/around; gardens are like books that one can/experience, promenade through or get lost." Kaldewey has captured the finest details of nature in his prints of lime and silver, with borders in black. Text printed in orange on transparent, smaller octavo-sized sheets, which appear intermittently throughout the illustrations. Bound in green Kozo paper-over-boards, with two little stones from the Japanese game of Go mounted to the cover and surrounded by gold foil and a clear plastic frame. Housed in a paper chemise and matching slipcase. Small stain to bottom edge of slipcase, else very fine. (Von Lucius, pp. 99-101). [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Guam Flying-fox Pteropus tokudae. Original artwork from A Gap in Nature.

1998. 1998 - Watercolour and gouache on Arches paper, 620 x 470mm, framed, signed and dated by artist. Last Record: June 1974. Distribution: Guam, Marianas Islands, Micronesia. Guam is the largest and southernmost of the Marianas Islands, and once was home to a diverse and unique fauna, including the tiny Guam flying-fox. Evidently it was always rare. It was first recorded in 1931, its obscurity before that time perhaps relating to the fact that it roosted with the larger and much more common Marianas flying-fox. The last specimen collected was a female found roosting at Tarague cliff in March 1967. She was accompanied by a young one that escaped capture. Although a probable sighting was made in June 1974, a survey during 1987 failed to reveal the presence of the species, and local hunters questioned in the 1970s presumed it to be very rare or extinct. Nothing is known of its biology. Hunting or habitat change may have been factors in its extinction. Since the loss of this flying-fox, Guam has experienced a cascade of extinctions brought about by the introduction of the brown tree snake (Boiga irregularis). As a result its forests are now largely silent, the island having lost many of its pollinators and fruit dispersers. The fate of Guam's ecology in the wake of such destruction should be of much interest to biologists, as many regions may come to resemble it in future. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Harry Potter Collection, 12 Volumes [Signed in The Sorcerer's Stone]

(NY): Scholastic/Levine. (1998-2008). The first American editions of the seven volumes of the Harry Potter series. Signed by Rowling on the title page of the first volume, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Together with the first American paperback printings of the first two volumes (Sorcerer's Stone, 1999 and Chamber of Secrets, 2000), as well as the first printings of the U.S. editions of Quidditch Through the Ages, by "Kennilworthy Whisp" (2001); Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by "Newt Salamander" (2001); and The Tales of Beedle the Bard (Children's High Level Group, 2008). The Harry Potter books, starting from a very modest beginning in the U.K., with the first book having a tiny first printing, most of it in softcover, became one of the most successful series in publishing history. The books have sold nearly a half billion copies and each of the titles has sold more than 50 million. The first book was published in the U.S. a year after its initial publication in England, and by that time the American publisher knew that it had a phenomenon on its hands. Even so, the success of the series on this side of the Atlantic surprised everyone, and each successive volume set records for first-day sales -- the final book in the series selling more than 11 million copies in the first 24 hours it was on sale. The American publisher insisted on changing the title of the first book from Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, apparently because they were afraid the U.S. audience would not recognize the alchemical -- i.e., magical -- connotation of "philosopher's stone." The first book was a relatively simple and straightforward fantasy, with a coming-of-age story wrapped up in it. The later books grew increasingly complex, and longer -- the last four all exceeded 600 pages and one of them reached 870 pages in its American edition -- and the themes became both darker and more nuanced. Eventually the coming of age story grew into one that involved a much larger question of identity, and explored the nature of good and evil as well as the meaning of personal responsibility, among a multitude of other themes. Rowling has been credited with restoring an entire generation's willingness to read, and perhaps saving the publishing industry -- at least for a time -- by doing so. Whatever turns out to be the final diagnosis of those issues, it is clear that she created a series of books that have had impact far beyond anyone's original expectations, or imagination, and that impact will be felt for generations, at least. Each of the seven Harry Potter books is fine in a fine dust jacket; the Quidditch and Beasts are fine in wrappers; Beedle is fine in pictorial boards, without jacket, as issued. First Edition.

John Wood writes in his introduction to the book: John Metoyer is one of the great photographic geniuses of our time and one of those exceptionally rare artists of the last few centuries who can genuinely be considered a master of more than one art - in his case, photography and poetry .. This book celebrates his work in both arts, two arts which for Metoyer are completely separate and have nothing in common but their creator. His photographs do not illustrate his poems nor is his poetry a commentary on his photography. They are merely separate manifestations of a similar genius.
