        The Diary of a Madman

Summer Garden Editions, New York 1998 - Number XXX of 100 copies, large octavo size, 49 pp., signed by Mikhail Magaril. Mikhail Magaril (b. 1950) came to the United States from Russia where he had earned a Master's Degree from the Moscow Graphic Art School; today, he is a highly regarded illustrator, artist, and sculptor with his works in collections such as Yale and Princeton. Magaril "draws extensively on the visual culture of the Soviet avant-garde book illustration, where meaningful arrangements of the image and typography underscore daring linguistic experiments of poets and writers." (N.B., from the artist's web site.) "The Diary of a Madman" is a short story written in first-person diary-entry format by Russian dramatist Nikolai Gogol (1819-1898), whose work lends itself so well to the artistic treatment by Magaril. The story follows the life of a titular counselor during the corrupt and repressive reign of Emperor Nicholas I of Russia; the descent of the protagonist Arksenty Ivanovich Poprishchin coincides with poor treatment by his superiors and the unrecognized love of a woman engaged to another man. Eventually Poprishchin loses touch with reality, believing himself to be the heir to the throne of Spain. The story begs the question: is going mad the sane response to a mad world? The nine illustrations are composed of tortuous lines, with an abstract and almost frantic quality that builds on the world of the narrator. Illustrated, designed, printed, and bound under the direction Mikhail Magaril and published under his own imprint, Summer Garden Editions. ***DESCRIPTION: Original coptic bound tan linen covered boards with an illustration by the artist stamped in brown to the upper board, fore-edge uncut, title-page printed in black and brown, nine drypoint plates including frontis, hand-lettering and sketches by the artist throughout; Monotype Van Dijck type, Rives BFK paper, large octavo (10" by 6 5/8"), pagination: [i-vi] 1-49 [1 colophon], limited edition of 100 copies, this number XXX, signed by the artist. Housed in a wood and leather fall-down-back box with a pull-tab, designed to look like a leather journal that has been repeatedly scratched, paper label to the upper board and backstrip, lined in brown paper hand lettered by the artist. ***CONDITION: Fine, like new, in a fine case. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard shipping charge does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind book we sell.         AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED: To a Fan on "Toledo Blade" Letterhead.

Toledo, Ohio:. March 5, 1998.. On 5 3/4 x 7 1/4" notepaper with letterhead of the Editorial Department, "You write a fine letter .... It amazes me that Nancy Drew remains so popular. Sincerely, Mildred W. Benson (Carolyn Keene)." Benson, the acknowledged creator of Nancy Drew, wrote 23 of the first 30 books beginning in 1930 with THE SECRET OF THE OLD CLOCK. Much like the enduring character she brought life to, she was an adventurer who, in addition to being a writer and journalist, was a pilot and amateur archaeologist. Over the course of her career Benson wrote 112 additional children's books and numerous short stories, and her career in journalism spanned 58 years -- first at the Toledo Times and then at the Toledo Blade, where she continued to write a column until she passed away in 2002 at the age 96. Light creases, stray pen marks on verso, otherwise fine. Includes original mailing envelope addressed by Benson. Letters such as this one, wholly in Benson's own hand, are quite scarce. .

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone [together with] Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

London: Bloomsbury, 1997 & 1998 - 2 volumes, octavo. Philosopher's Stone in original pictorial wrappers, Smarties sticker to front cover, issued without a dust jacket. Chamber of Secrets in original pictorial boards, with the dust jacket. Philosopher's Stone slightly faded at spine, covers slightly creased, light creasing to top corners of some pages; a very good copy. Chamber of Secrets lightly bumped at spine ends, small mark to fore edge, a couple of marks to front free endpaper and half-title; an excellent copy in the dust jacket, lightly faded at spine panels with very slight creasing at spine panel ends. First edition of the Chamber of Secrets, eleventh impression of Philosopher's Stone, both inscribed by the author for Iain Dallas, at a signing when he was a nine-year old-boy. He had written various spellings of his name in pencil on the title page of Philosopher's Stone: "Iain / Eoin Dallas / Ian Dallas / Ean Dallas". Rowling, upon seeing this, inscribed the title page of Philosopher's Stone "To Ian (not Eoin / Ian or Ean) with best wishes J. K. Rowling". Continuing the theme, she inscribed the copy of Chamber of Secrets on the front free endpaper, "To Iain (how about Eeyan?) J. K. Rowling". A charmingly inscribed set of books, showing Rowling clearly enjoying interacting with her young fans, at a time when her fame was rapidly growing. Errington A1(a), A2(a).         Shipping casualties (loss of the steamship "Titanic") ; report of a formal investigation into the circumstances attending the foundering on 15th April, 1912, of the British steamship "Titanic", of Liverpool, after striking ice in or near latitude 41 46' longitude 50 14' W., North Atlantic Ocean, whereby loss of life ensued : presented to both Houses of Parliament by command of His Majesty

Kew, Surrey: PRO [Public Record Office Publications] Publications, 1912 [but c. 1998]. Tall, thick 8vo: 74,vi,972pp, including evidence, appendices and index by name and subject. Publisher's blue buckram, lettered and ruled in gilt to spine. Complete with original slipcase and yellow silk page-marker. A Fine, unmarked copy, tight, clean, and bright. Facsimile of Lord Mersey's original 1912 inquiry into the sinking of the Titanic, originally published by Her Majesty's Stationery Office and printed by J. Truscott and Son, 1912. Includes Description of the ship, Life Saving Appliances, Crew and Passengers, Account of the Ship's Journey across the Atlantic, The Weather Conditions, The Collision, Extent of the Damage, The Flooding in the first 10 Minutes, Final Effect of the Damage, Account of the saving and rescue of those who survived, and The Rescue by the S.S. "Carpathia." The inquiry drew accusations of partiality, citing Mersey's ship-owning interests. However, more recent studies have noted the "surprising impartiality" of the investigation, despite Mersey's "autocratic, impatient and not a little testy" court persona. Suddenly, some might say magically, there came midnight bookselling parties where eager children stood in long lines to be among the first to read Rowling's latest (and ever growing) novel. The Harry Potter series has sold more than 400 million books and has become the best-selling book series in history. Leading magazine editors named its author the "Most Influential Woman in Britain." Rowling has received numerous literary awards, including the highest award in children's literature, the HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSON AWARD, and deservedly so.         Four wood engravings made in 1933 for the Golden Hours Press' Famous Tragedy of the Rich Jew of Malta

Fleece Press, [Denby Dale, Huddersfield] 1998 - 18x11cm (image size), 27x20cm (sheet size). Four monochrome wood-engravings by Eric Ravilious printed from the blocks, from 'The Famous Tragedy of the Rich Jew of Malta', published by the Golden Hours Press in 1933. One of 120 sets of four loose sheets, plus a further sheet with a printed explanatory note, in a cream card portfolio, printed with title in red and black to the front and copyright notice to the back. A scarce Fleece Press item, and an opportunity to acquire some of Ravilious' most celebrated images from a very scarce book - the largest woodblocks ever produced by him. The short-lived Golden Hours Press was founded in 1932 by Christopher Sandford and Francis Newbury, but closed after one year (and just three books) when its proprietors took over the Golden Cockerel Press from Robert Gibbings. Here, the images have been printed from the original blocks to the usual immaculate standard of the Fleece Press. The explanatory note points out some flaws on the fourth block due to its age, although these are barely apparent in the printed image. Fine, in a Fine portfolio.

He had grown frustrated that his TV pilots and screenplays were not getting made and that TV-related production limitations like budgets and episode lengths were forcing him to cut characters and trim battle scenes. This pushed Martin back towards writing books, where he did not have to worry about compromising the size of his imagination. Admiring the works of J. R. R. Tolkien in his childhood, he wanted to write an epic fantasy, though he did not have any specific ideas. This would eventually turn into his epic fantasy series: A Song of Ice and Fire, which was inspired by the Wars of the Roses, The Accursed Kings and Ivanhoe. Martin originally conceptualised it as being three volumes. It is currently intended to comprise seven volumes. The first, A Game of Thrones, was published in 1996." .
