Photographs of fifty-five prominent writers at their desks are accompanied by the writers' own comments on their working lives and workplaces. Essex, Karen and James L. Swanson
Los Angeles: General Publishing Group, 1996. First Edition. Hardcover. Presentation copy, inscribed by Bettie Page to Hugh Hefner on the half-title: "For Hugh M. Hefner, With fond memories of the old days, and with sincere thanks for all you've done to help me. Love always, Bettie Page". Additionally inscribed to the Playboy magazine founder by author James L. Swanson, also on the half-title. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from the Hugh M. Hefner Foundation. Prior to her departure from modeling in 1957, Page achieved a measure of mainstream success thanks in large part to Hefner, who featured the iconic pin-up as the centerfold in the January 1955 issue of Playboy. However, it wasn't until 1993 when the two first met. Page, who had recently been released after eight years in a mental institution, was living "penniless and infamous" in a Los Angeles group home at the time. It was Hefner who connected Page with agent Mark Roesler who helped her achieve financial security by regaining the legal rights to many of her photographs. Hefner also attended to Page's funeral costs, and continued to pay tribute to the legendary Queen of the Pin-Ups: "It's very difficult to find a parallel for her - this combination of naughty and nice - and it's all in the context of innocence. The remarkable thing about her image is how much it's influenced pop culture - from music, to movies, to fashion." This authorized biography includes a foreword by Bettie Page and features more than 500 photographs, including many previously unpublished. Quarto. Original black cloth binding, with silver t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Henry "Hank" Melson Stommel (September 27, 1920 - January 17, 1992) was a major contributor to the field of physical oceanography. Beginning in the 1940s, he advanced theories about global ocean circulation patterns and the behavior of the Gulf Stream that form the basis of physical oceanography today. Widely recognized as one of the most influential and productive oceanographers of his time, Stommel was both a groundbreaking theoretician and an astute, seagoing observer. Discoveries Henry Stommel showed that the north-south gradient of the strength of the horizontal Coriolis force (the "beta effect") was responsible for the observed fact that the return flow of the slow interior gyre circulations is concentrated in fast moving western boundary currents, such as the Gulf Stream and the Kuroshio Current, a process known as western intensification. As a result, these western boundary currents have a larger and steadier transport than the corresponding boundary currents, such as the California Current and Canary Current, on the eastern side of the ocean basins. In subtropical latitudes, the western boundary currents are important in transporting the excess heat the earth receives in th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gollancz, 1996. Condition: Neuwertig. Terry Pratchett FEET OF CLAY limited edition uncorrected proof Gollancz, 1996 Paperback 1st edition, limited to 167 copies only. very good uncorrected proof copy. Überall, wo mir keine Informationen vorliegen, habe ich Fragezeichen gesetzt: 1965 New Worlds vol.49 no 156 (Night Dweller) (??? uncorrected proofs) 1965 The Unfriendly Future (The Hades Business) (??? uncorrected proofs) 1971 The Carpet People (??? … [Click Below for Full Description]

Terry Pratchett
Bristol: Condition: Good. This is an Issue of the Western Daily Press Newspaper published on 24th December 1996 (Christmas Eve) Inside it contains a complete page devoted to a Short Story by Terry Pratchett written specially for the paper. I think he did this as a favour, as he had worked for the paper before he became famous for his Discworld Stories. The story involves a Computer that believes in Father Christmas The story is illustrated, has a small colour photo of Terry next to it and is SIGNED by him up near the top. It is extremely rare, as of course most daily papers end up in the bin or are used for wrapping or lighting fires etc Someone kept this and somehow got Terry to sign it While I cannot be 100% certain it is Terry's Signature, I have compared it to other examples and am satisfied it is by him. I have never seen an example of this item on sale before and while others must exist I am certain it is very Rare The paper itself shows signs of aging, it has some yellowish staining on this page (I think this is from sunlight exposure) and has creasing. However it is a 20 year old Newspaper and considering this I think it is in relatively good condition Any queries - please get in touch. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Teller, Edward
Jack Bacon and Company, Reno, Nevada, 1996. Large signed limited printed document titled Morality and Defense containing a lengthy quote by theoretical physicist Edward Teller. One page, signed by Teller in the lower right corner. Throughout the text, Teller explores the history of nuclear tensions between the United States and Russia and advocated for "an agreement on the morality of self-defense" and "a missile defense under international control." In fine condition. Framed. The entire piece measures 25 inches by 18.5 inches. Colloquially known as "the father of the hydrogen bomb", Hungarian-American theoretical physicist Edward Teller made numerous contributions to nuclear and molecular physics and, in his later years, became especially known for his advocacy of controversial technological solutions to both military and civilian problems. He was an early member of the Manhattan Project, charged with developing the first atomic bomb; during this time he made a serious push to develop the first fusion-based weapons as well, but these were deferred until after World War II. After his controversial testimony in the security clearance hearing of his former Los Alamos Laboratory superior, J. Robert Oppenheimer, Teller was ostracized by much of the scientific community.
