Children of the Alley [Signed] WAS $2,850

New York: Doubleday, 1996. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/near fine. PRESENTLY DISCOUNTED. WAS $2,850. A Fine, Superior, copy of the first American edition, first printing, in a Very Near Fine dust jacket (a small closed tear to the front panel near the flap fold - repaired by a small piece of tape to the jacket's verso, not visible on the exterior, slight push to spine head), SIGNED BY NAGUIB MAHFOUZ on the half-title; the history of a tumultuous alley whose residents, some of whom are fearsome, some fearless, and some fearful, all descended from a single man, Gabalawi, who kept to his mansion at the alley's end. Naguib Mahfouz "who, through works rich in nuance - now clear-sightedly realistic, now evocatively ambiguous - has formed an Arabian narrative art that applies to all mankind", won the 1988 Nobel Prize in Literature, making him the only Egyptian, and the only author writing in Arabic, ever to win the Prize. In 1994 Mahfouz survived an assassination attempt perpetrated by religious extremists. The attack damaged nerves in his right hand, rendering Mahfouz unable to write for more than a few minutes each day, and seriously affecting his handwriting as seen in his signature to this book. This copy belonged to Actor Jack Palance and carries the bookplate from the 2006 sale of his personal property to the front pastedown. Signed copies of this Nobel Prize Winner's books are rather uncommon and nice copies of this title are surprisingly scarce. Accordingly, signed copies of this title in a condition as nice as is this one are rarely seen. A Fine copy, PREVIOUSLY BELONGING TO JACK PALANCE AND SIGNED BY NAGUIB MAHFOUZ.

The Hub: An Illustrated Weekly for Wheelmen and Wheelwomen. Volume I (August 8-October 31, 1896) and Volume II (November 7, 1896-January 30, 1897)

London: George Newnes Two volumes bound as one. Volume I: 7 (index), 520 pages. Volume II: 6 (index), 544 pages. Profusely illustrated in b/w. Many interesting advertisements throughout. Original maroon cloth (heavily flecked) with gilt titling and rules on the spine. Small hole in cloth spine. Slight waterstains on first few pages, which have a few short closed tears. Rare first volumes of this fascinating magazine from the heyday of cycling. The Hub was a short-lived publication, only surviving for thirteen volumes from 1996-1899. It's especially interesting in that it tried very hard to attract women readers with many articles on cycling fashions, health, social news, advice, etc. A regular feature was "Women of Note in the Cycling World". Women feature in many of the illustrations and advertisements.. Hard Cover. Good.

VERDI LA FENICE Fine Facsimile Edition

      Vallecchi. New. Hardcover.
TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS Format: large format Number of Pages: 208 Paper: weighing 220 grams, has been created by the Cartiere Miliani di Fabriano with a particular composition enriched with vegetable fibers. This special composition reproduces the characteristics of antique paper and is guaranteed to last for centuries. Binding: entirely sewn by hand and bound in leather, with gold-leaf designs. Container: in wood, finished in walnut and leather with embossments. Iconography: about 200 images, the most interesting of which are full-page reproduction

CONTENTS In this volume we have reproduced all the documents pertaining to the relationship between the composer and the Venetian Theater. Rough drafts of scenery, costumes and stage designs--all belonging to La Fenice’s Historic Archives-- are published here in annoted form. The book is divided into two parts: 1) Rough draft designs for stage sets and costumes. Following an essay of introduction written by Maria Ida Biggi, is the presentation of the graphic materials which were almost all lost in the 1996 fire. The images, which had fortunately been reproduced before the fire and added to the scholar’s personal archives, therefore constitute a unique testimony of the lost materials. Costume and set designs are subdivided by operas; this part of the volume is then subdivided into sections, each one relating to an opera composed by Verdi. 2) Resources and documents. With an essay of introduction written by the director of the Historic Archives at the Teatro La Fenice, Franco Rossi, (who was responsible for the selection and the indexing of the materials) , the entire corpus of the Verdian paper documents from the Archives are herein published: autographed letters by Verdi, playbills for premiere operas, photographic material realting to Verdi, and the most famous interpretations of his operas, frontispieces of the original libretti, the first pages of music scores with hand-written notes by the composer himself, etc. All of the documents, for the most part previously unpublished, regarding the operas composed by Verdi for the Fenice (Ermani, Attila, Rigoletto, Traviata, Simon Boccanegra) have been temporarily conserved at the Levi Foundation along with other informative records.

AUTHORS Franco Rossi, director of the Archivio Storico della Fenice and Maria Ida Biggi, professor of History of Scenography at the University Ca’ Foscari of Venice.

INSTITUTIONS This volume was commissioned by the Historical Archives of Il Teatro La Fenice.
.

        Alchemy & Marbling

Joppe, The Netherlands: Karli Frigge, 1996. 75 pp: 22 pp. introduction in English, 19 leaves with 24 original tipped-in marbles with surprising shapes. Some types, like the tiger eyelets, are very old and are to be found on papers from the 19th century ; others are new, for example the travelling drop of paint in experiment 3. Of all marbles the recipes and descriptions of marbling experiments are given. Half the experiments have been done in black paint: a prerequisite to do the work. Moreover, this shows the shapes and structures to their best advantage. It is not until the last chapter that colours are shown in surprising gradations. Bound by the author, in 100 copies, signed by the author. Black decorated boards with parchment strips on a leather spine, according to the old Dutch bookbinding method. With the manuscript erratum by the author for the wrong pagination of the leaves between the samples. Enclosed in a black cardboard slipcase. FINE.. 1st edition. 27 x 29 cm.

Tokyo, Japan: Shinchosha Company Publishers, 1996. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/As New Dust Jacket.. Tokyo, Japan: Shinchosha Company Publishers, 1996. Hardcover. As New/As New. First Edition/First Printing. 288 pages. Artist Book. One of the greatest photography books of the 20th century. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a hardcover original only. The book is now rare. A magnificent production by Tadanori Yokoo: Oversize-volume format. Red hard boards with black titles on spine, as issued. Postcards collected, photographed, and assembled by Tadanori Yokoo. Essay by Hiroshi Aramata appended at the end. Promotional blue obi-band wrapped around the book. Printed on thick coated stock paper in Tokyo, Japan to absolutely the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with colorful titles and design on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents what is unquestionably the single most glorious book on the art of the postcard and its intimate relation to photography, graphic design, and collecting. "Waterfall Rapture" utilizes the "multiplier effect" to celebrate and capture in book form the rapturous experience called collecting. Every postcard is a reproduction of a photograph (including the photograph of a painting or work of art) . Each of the postcards in his massive collection was photographed by Yokoo to create his book. These photographs appear as miniature reproductions in the book, that is, as photographs of photographs of photographs of photographs, beautifully, lovingly, and obsessively assembled on every page by the graphic designer. The exhilarating result is a book that is a one-of-a-kind, which is every collector's dream object, and the postcard, photography, graphic design, and collecting finally come full circle: My addiction, my collection, my edition. Why does a human being become a collector? According to Susan Sontag (in "On Photography") , the ultimate reason is that it is the most effective way to understand oneself and somehow possess the world. According to Tadanori Yokoo, it is because: "A collection is addictive. A collection is a deviation from the system. A collection is spiritual. A collection is the unification of life and art. A collection is the soul's salvation. A collection is the pursuit of beauty. A collection is the discipline of intuition. A collection transforms quantity into quality". And ultimately because: "A collection has no purpose" (Tadanori Yokoo) . Sontag and Yokoo are really saying the same thing: Collecting is about oneself, a self-portrait, not about what one is collecting. "He found space somewhere in the book for each and every single postcard. Dear reader, don't skip over a single one. Have no doubt that by participating in this memorial, you too will surely be able to find deliverance from your earthly suffering" (Hiroshi Aramata) . Pure rapture, absolute bliss. A "must-have" title for Tadanori Yokoo collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed (in Japanese characters, kanji style) in black marker by Tadanori Yokoo. This is an Import title and is now highly collectible. This is one of only two signed copies still available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 13, 000 color plates. Tadanori Yokoo's "Waterfall Rapture" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". The greatest living graphic designer. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER TADANORI YOKOO TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 4104110019.

The Peoples of Middle-Earth, 1st Edition, 1st Printing, with Dustjacket

London: Harper Collins, 1996. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Peoples of Middle-Earth, by J.R.R. Tolkien, edited by Christopher Tolkien. Published by Harper Collins in 1996. This book is in Near Fine condition, with no writing or previous owners names. The paper has lightly browned at the edges, as is common with the last 3 volumes of the series, due to paper quality issues. There is no foxing or offsetting to the interior of the textblock, and no spotting to the edges. The dustjacket is not priced or clipped, indicating this is the export edition. It shows very little rubbing to the glossy surface, minor edgewear with a tiny bit of color loss to the upper rear spine fold area. The spine is not faded as is often the case. This remains the toughest of the series to find, as Harper Collins pulled the edition from shelves, and pulped them, leaving only a very few copies in circulation. This is not a library or Print on Demand copy, but a highly prized true UK 1st Edition 1st Impression in wonderful condition. From the blurb, 'The final volume of the 12 volume series of The History of Middle-Earth in which Christopher Tolkien shows the evolution, from his fathers records and essays, of the chronology of the later Ages, the Calendars, the Hobbit genealogies, and the Westron language or Common Speech. This book concludes with two unfinished stories, The New Shadow, taking place in Gondor of The Fourth Age, and the tale of Tal-elmar, the coming of the dreaded Numenorean ships as seen through the eyes of men during the Dark Years.' Additional digital images are available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Near Fine / Very Good Plus.

Working in the tradition of the great French publishers of the livre de peintre, such as Ambroise Vollard, Henri Kahnweiler, Teriade, and Iliazd, FitzGerald has brought the 20th century art form into the 21st century. With this assemblage of artists and crafts people, he has presented to the viewing / reading public some of the most important texts of our time in elegant and beautiful books. DIVAN-E-SHAMS is certainly at the top of this list.
See an Image.
New York City, NY: Whitney Museum Of American Art/Scalo Publishers, 1996. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 492 pages. Retrospective collection of photographs. One of the greatest photography books of the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. A brilliant production by Hans Werner Holzwarth Berlin: Oversize-volume format. Green hard boards with black titles printed on spine, as issued. Photographs by Nan Goldin. Essay by Curator Elizabeth Sussman, who places Goldin in an artistic context ranging from Larry Clark to Lucian Freud. Commentary from a cast of Goldin's friends and colleagues, including Cookie Mueller, David Wojnarowicz, Luc Sante, and Darryl Pinckney. Interview with film critic J. Hoberman. List of Plates, Exhibition History, and Selected Bibliography appended at the end. Printed on thick coated stock paper in Germany to the very highest standards. In pictorial DJ, which features a self-portrait on the cover, and titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name held at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1996-1997. Presents photographs taken over a 25-year period which document "Nan's family", the underground culture of Manhattan and her "extended family" abroad, in places like Thailand, the Philippines, and Italy. Nan Goldin turns her camera outward, to record the social impact of AIDS and drugs, and inward, to look with unblinking intimacy at her friends, her lovers, and herself. She photographs her battered face in the mirror after he beats her up (the overriding motif of the book) . She photographs them kissing and making up, and making love. She traces the decline and death of her friend Cookie Mueller from AIDS. She shows male prostitutes in Bangkok and Manila, who opened their hearts to her. She follows her friends around in Italy, where they returned to be cared for with compassion before dying. The universal primacy of erotic desire as seen through intimate friendships, casual sexual encounters, and full-fledged romances, what Goldin herself beautifully calls "coupling", is the collection's powerful theme. This is not a scholarly analysis of Goldin's work, but an emotionally charged look at her life and times. Together with "The Devil's Playground", it is her best work since "The Ballad of Sexual Dependency". A "must-have" title for Nan Goldin collectors. This presentation copy is very prominently and beautifully signed and inscribed in black pen on the title page by Nan Goldin. The recipient is named. The artist/photographer recently returned to the United States after living in Europe for the greater part of the last six years (2000-2006) . She made a very rare, sensational Chicago appearance on the occasion of the exhibition and acquisition of "The Ballad of Sexual Dependency" by the Art Institute of Chicago. This title is now highly collectible. As far as we know, this is the only signed copy available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 300 color plates. Nan Goldin's "The Ballad of Sexual Dependency" is regarded as the most important photography book since "Diane Arbus". One of the most influential living artist/photographers. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER NAN GOLDIN TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 3931141330.

As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 87 pages. Landmark collection of color photographs on subject. One of the greatest photography books of the 20th century. Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition of 100 numbered and signed copies. An austerely elegant production by David Levinthal and Jack Woody: Oversize-volume format. Black cloth boards with photographic reproduction pasted on the front cover and red titles embossed on the spine, as issued. Photographs by David Levinthal. Essays by Roger Rosenblatt, Garry Trudeau, and James E. Young. This is Levinthal's second collaboration with Trudeau, the creator of "Doonesbury". 8 X 10 inch Cibachrome print matted and laid into the box. Handmade black cloth clamshell box. Printed on thick coated stock paper in Japan to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents in the ultimate Deluxe-Edition format "Mein Kampf", David Levinthal's sequel/companion volume to "Hitler Moves East" (1977). The latter consisted of black-and-white photographs; the present collection is entirely in color. Like his other collections built around compelling themes, "Mein Kampf", whose title is adopted from Adolf Hitler's autobiography/political manifesto, tells an unforgettable photo-narrative about a Past that continues to haunt the Present. It is not possible to imagine a more demonic figure than Hitler and a more evil ideology than Nazism. What makes "Mein Kampf" permanently disturbing is Levinthal's point that Hitler may be long dead but his legacy is very much alive, very much with us. Photographing his toy artifacts is an artistic strategy that is now identified with the artist. Levinthal is a collector twice over: First, of vintage toys, which are valuable in and of themselves (Levinthal's photographs would not have the same power if the toys were new or merely replicas, therefore not "collectible"); second, of images by their photographer/collector, who deploys a highly developed technique that enables him to make the toys come, uncannily, to life. As such, Levinthal's body of work is ultimately about aesthetics versus ethics, the paradox of the aesthetically pleasing photograph (which seduces) despite its ethically horrific subject (which repels). The photographs are beautiful, which is not the same thing as saying they glorify their subject. They do not. Instead, their beauty paradoxically makes us more aware of the simple fact that evil persists. An absolute "must-have" title for David Levinthal collectors. This copy is one of the Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition, and it is very prominently and beautifully numbered and signed in black ink-pen on the Back Limitation Page by David Levinthal. Laid-in is an 8 X 10 inch Cibachrome print, also very prominently and beautifully numbered, dated, and signed in black ink-pen on verso by the artist/photographer: "David Levinthal 1996 20/100". This title is now very highly collectible. This is one of very few copies of the Deluxe Clamshell Box Edition still available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 59 color plates, 1 original color print. One of the greatest living photographers. A flawless collectible copy. The Fallen Man (Original manuscript, with author's hand corrections)

New York: HarperCollins, 1996. Tony Hillerman's original typescript for his novel "The Fallen Man," with his original holograph corrections in ink. Housed in a plain orange publisher's box, with a memo from Hillerman, on his stationery, affixed to the lid. & & The history of the manuscript is explained in three documents that accompany the typescript: (1) a letter from the editorial staff at HarperCollins, on the publisher's stationery, stating that this the most recent copy-edited typescript, (2) an autograph note on publisher's memo stationery from Hillerman's editor Eamon Dolan, asking Hillerman to provide final changes, and thanking him for providing jacket copy, which he says is superior to his, and will appear "virtually unchanged on the book's flaps," and (3) an autograph note on Hillerman's personal stationery to a bookseller friend, stating that it is his copy of the final corrected typescript (which was ultimately returned to him by the publisher, after the changes were made for the book). Finally, the box has a plain white label affixed to the front panel, on which the author has written in holograph ink: "Fallen Man" (corrected from 'Fallen Men') - copy edited and revised ms.," followed by the author's Albuquerque address from that time. & & Hillerman is well-known for making constant revisions to his novels, and in many instances the endings to his books are found to be changed completely between the issue of the proof and the hardcover edition, and even between the hardcover edition and the paperback edition. A unique item, and evidence of a completed work from one of the key mystery writers of his generation, one unique in his perspective regarding American Indian culture and the American Southwest.

        SELECTED POEMS 1947 - 1995

[New York]: HarperCollins, [1996].. Cloth and boards. About fine in dust jacket. Second impression of the first edition. Inscribed and signed by Ginsberg on the title-page: Allen Ginsberg for Lucien Carr & Family 12/23/96 Merry Christmas Happy New Year." On the blank page facing the title, Ginsberg has drawn a full page depiction of a skeleton (with hat) surrounded by a large, decorative snake chasing its tail, the whole against a field of stars, and inscribed at the bottom: "For LC from AG 12/23/96." Laid in is an invitation to an exhibit of Ginsberg's photographs at Tibor de Nagy Gallery. Ginsberg met Carr at Columbia University in 1943, and through Carr met Jack Kerouac, Neal Cassady and William Burroughs. In the NYT Obituary for Carr (30 January 2005), Ginsberg's earlier comment about Carr's role in the circle of friendships that gave birth to the literary arm of the Beat generation was quoted: "Lou was the glue." Carr went to work for United Press International in 1946 and was promoted to night news editor in 1956, coincident with the preparations for press of the first public edition of HOWL. Carr was included, with Kerouac, Burroughs and Cassady, in the printed dedication, and when he received his copy, wrote Ginsberg expressing "one small gripe" about his inclusion there, and requesting, out of deference to his privacy, that Ginsberg avoid such mention in future books. At Ginsberg's expense, Carr's name was deleted from the dedication page of the second impression (then already printed), and from subsequent printings, including this printing. Nonetheless, in 1982, Ginsberg dedicated PLUTONIAN ODE to Carr, "... for friendship all these years...."
