        Infinite Jest

US: Little, Brown and Company. New York, Little Brown, 1996. Signed Uncorrected Proof in wraps. A near fine copy with light edge wear. Some curling to the outer corners. A scarce book. Undoubtedly the author's magnum opus and his most celebrated novels, indeed one of the most celebrated novels of the 20th Century. Viewed by some as a brilliant take on the postmodern condition, and others as a pile of junk. Comparisons have been made to Gravity's Rainbow and Ulysses before that. Only time will tell if they stand up to the bold claims - either way this is a modern highlight of book collecting. . Near Fine. Paperback. Proof. 1996.

London: Doubleday, 1996. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Very Good. Signed by Author. First UK Edition. 769 pp. B/w photo ills. Gray boards have bright silver lettering on spine. There is a barely visible trace of ink at lower front corner and a hint of a crease at the heel of spine. Glossy white dj (in protective cover) is titled in red and black with b/w photo of Gorbachev on front and spine, slight sunning to title of spine which has shifted the color from red to orange. As-new dj is unclipped. Eps are gray/white maps of the Soviet Union. A signed bookplate is tipped in on t.p. This is explained by a publisher's letter enclosed. This copy, however, has been individually signed by Gorbachev opposite the t.p. which is extremely rare, as these copies were sent with bookplate already signed. That may be the last time this book was touched -- it's that clean and tight! The memoirs of one of the most powerful men in the world, "left behind, like most who start a revolution." Contemporary history, fascinating reading, powerful lessons.

The Goose Egg Nugget (Klondyke Edition) - Limited Edition Print (Signed)

1996. Print. New. Lithograph print by Carl Barks on Acid-free Paper. SIGNED NUMBERED PRINT. Size: 8" x 10" (203mm x 254mm). Carl Barks was asked in an interview on June 24, 1984 to comment on his paintings in general, and his own favourites in particular, of the 122 he did that were published in Another Rainbow's The Fine Art of Walt Disney's Donald Duck. He responded with a smile, I always liked The Goose Egg Nugget very much -- it told its own story. Another Rainbow produced it as a mini litho and did a full-size print of another that Barks said was a very close second, Nobody's Spending Fool. If collectors today thought they wanted to invest in a single lithograph, serious consideration would have to be given to The Goose Egg Nugget! This is the story of his masterpiece. One day many long years ago, young prospector Scrooge McDuck brazenly strode into the local Dawson City saloon. As all (well, almost all) patrons stare in wide-eyed wonder, he reaches into his poke and reveals the gold that will forever separate him from every other seeker of fortune in the Klondike -- The Goose Egg Nugget! In this painting, Carl Barks wove a rich tapestry of tension that draws the viewer's gaze inexorably to the prize, glittering in light that seems to come more from Scrooge's look of unbridled triumph than from the dim oil lamp. This painting was issued as a limited edition miniature lithograph by Another Rainbow, the thirty second (32nd) of a long-run series, rendered in fourteen (14) colours and touchplates, printed by Chicago's Black Box on Opalesque Keramique, an exotic archival paper with exceptional ink holdout. The Goose Egg Nugget comes with a comic book reprinting the story behind the painting, "Back to the Klondike, which first appeared in Uncle Scrooge #2 (1953). LIMITED TO 100 copies. These 100 commemorative prints were issued for the benefit of the Klondyke Centennial Society in Dawson City, Yukon. Print comes with Full-colour, comic reprint of Back to the Klondike.

French Children of the Holocaust: A Memorial

New York: New York University Press, 1996. First edition. Thick quarto. Original illustrated boards. A memorial to the French children of the Holocaust with over 2,500 photographic images of the children. Warmly inscribed by Serge Klarsfeld. In Fine Condition. Uncommon signed and inscribed. Photobook II, Parr & Badger. Klarsfeld's memorial is "the definitive history of the 85 railway transports that deported more than 11,000 Jewish children… as comprehensive a book as we are likely to get" (Parr & Badger II). "In an exhaustive feat of research presented as a memorial… Serge Klarsfield spent decades restoring the names of 11,400 French Jewish children who were deported during WWII. Most were put to death in Nazi camps… 'Here each child has a story, where he was arrested and what camp he was sent to,' said Klarsfeld, himself a childhood survivor of the Nazi occupation. and a Paris lawyer who has spent his life documenting French and German war crimes in WWII. But, he said: 'This is not a book against the killers. This is a book in favor of the victims" (New York Times).

Children of the Alley [Signed] WAS $2,850

New York: Doubleday, 1996. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/near fine. PRESENTLY DISCOUNTED. WAS $2,850. A Fine, Superior, copy of the first American edition, first printing, in a Very Near Fine dust jacket (a small closed tear to the front panel near the flap fold - repaired by a small piece of tape to the jacket's verso, not visible on the exterior, slight push to spine head), SIGNED BY NAGUIB MAHFOUZ on the half-title; the history of a tumultuous alley whose residents, some of whom are fearsome, some fearless, and some fearful, all descended from a single man, Gabalawi, who kept to his mansion at the alley's end. Naguib Mahfouz "who, through works rich in nuance - now clear-sightedly realistic, now evocatively ambiguous - has formed an Arabian narrative art that applies to all mankind", won the 1988 Nobel Prize in Literature, making him the only Egyptian, and the only author writing in Arabic, ever to win the Prize. In 1994 Mahfouz survived an assassination attempt perpetrated by religious extremists. The attack damaged nerves in his right hand, rendering Mahfouz unable to write for more than a few minutes each day, and seriously affecting his handwriting as seen in his signature to this book. This copy belonged to Actor Jack Palance and carries the bookplate from the 2006 sale of his personal property to the front pastedown. Signed copies of this Nobel Prize Winner's books are rather uncommon and nice copies of this title are surprisingly scarce. Accordingly, signed copies of this title in a condition as nice as is this one are rarely seen. A Fine copy, PREVIOUSLY BELONGING TO JACK PALANCE AND SIGNED BY NAGUIB MAHFOUZ.

The Hub: An Illustrated Weekly for Wheelmen and Wheelwomen. Volume I (August 8-October 31, 1896) and Volume II (November 7, 1896-January 30, 1897)

London: George Newnes Two volumes bound as one. Volume I: 7 (index), 520 pages. Volume II: 6 (index), 544 pages. Profusely illustrated in b/w. Many interesting advertisements throughout. Original maroon cloth (heavily flecked) with gilt titling and rules on the spine. Small hole in cloth spine. Slight waterstains on first few pages, which have a few short closed tears. Rare first volumes of this fascinating magazine from the heyday of cycling. The Hub was a short-lived publication, only surviving for thirteen volumes from 1996-1899. It's especially interesting in that it tried very hard to attract women readers with many articles on cycling fashions, health, social news, advice, etc. A regular feature was "Women of Note in the Cycling World". Women feature in many of the illustrations and advertisements.. Hard Cover. Good.
