Oliver Stone's exploration of President Richard Nixon, starring Anthony Hopkins as Nixon. The film portrays his strict Quaker upbringing, his time in law school, and his self-effacing courtship of his wife, Pat (Joan Allen). His character flaws are revealed early, and his defeat by John F. Kennedy in the 1960 presidential election, followed by the loss of the 1962 California gubernatorial race, seem to signal the end of his career. Yet Nixon remains a brilliant politician, until his growing paranoia triggers the Watergate scandal which significant sections of the film deal.         Sabbath’s Theater.

Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1995. First edition of the author's second National Book Award-winning novel. Octavo, original half cloth. Signed by Philip Roth on the title page. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Mickey Sabbath, the hero of the novel makes a concerted effort to be bad. Like Alexander Portnoy, the famously self-abusing character in Roth's 1969 novel Portnoy's Complaint, Sabbath has an appetite for "acts of exhibitionism, voyeurism, fetishism, auto-eroticism and oral coitus." But while Portnoy's antics were usually comical and liberating, Sabbath often feels imprisoned by his own acts of self-indulgence. Though his frantic pursuit of sex is a desperate attempt to abate his anxieties about death, it only serves to obliterate any semblance of real life he could have had. A great work...Roth's richest, most rewarding novel, funny and profound, as powerful as writing can be" (The New York Times Book Review).

        Adult Comedy Action Drama

1995. First Edition . Signed. PRINCE, Richard. Adult Comedy Action Drama. (New York-Berlin-Zurich: Scalo, 1995). Tall quarto, original blue paper boards, original photographic dust jacket. $1800.First edition, signed by Prince beneath the photographic plate preceding the title page, with 235 vibrant color images of his whimsical “postmodern landscape” (Roth).“An autobiography through words and picturesÂ… Adult Comedy Action Drama links together PrinceÂ’s drawings, aphorisms, original photographs and photographs of other peoplesÂ’ photographs. Lighthearted and funny, it describes and theatricalizes the visual ‘stage setÂ’ of an artistÂ’s life, enacting all the comedies, actions and dramas with pictures alone. PrinceÂ’s is a postmodern landscape, where one becomes what one beholds” (Roth, 30). “Prince updates the old Modernist flirtation between the intellectual and the supposedly primitiveÂ… borrowing conceptual and aesthetic strategies from Duchamp, Jasper Johns, Minimalism and the photography-as-painting movement” (New York Times). Open Book, 366. Roth, 274. A fine copy, scarce signed.

FIRST EDITION AND ONE OF ONLY 30 SPECIAL DELUXE SIGNED COPIES of this beautiful production printed on specially made Zerkall paper. Noted wood engraver and artist John Buckland Wright was born in Dunedin, New Zealand and moved to England with his widowed mother in 1908. He initially studied architecture but decided instead to pursue a career in art. Wright worked primarily as a printmaker, illustrating numerous private press books. His naturally elegant style, coupled with his abiding interest in the female form, created a distinctive and sensuous style for which he was justly famous during his life and ever after. This is the second of a series of books published in collaboration between the artist son, Christopher Buckland Smith, and printer Simon Lawrence of the Fleece Press editioning (in many cases for the first time) a collection of blocks found in the artist studio shortly after his death. Many of which were never seen or published before, and the others that had been were printed in extremely limited numbers. This volume contains all of the engravings of bathers or of women in watery landscapes or seascapes, other then those published in white line or silhouette as those were included in the previous publication.
