        Extraits de poèmes

Fo unbound sheets under a drawing folder, a sheet of text, a suite of 12 copperplates ; enclosed a plate on rice paper stuck on japanese vellum signed by the artist. Limited edition : only 24 copies. This one named copy signed by A. Krol. (Pierre-Yves Corbel).         Call It Sleep

San Francisco: Arion Press, 1995. BEAUTIFUL SIGNED LIMITED EDITION from the Arion Press. Number 182 out 300 numbered copies (out of a total edition of 326), signed by Roth. Illustrated with 48 photographs of New York City in the period of the novel. At the time it was written, "Few publishers expressed interest in Call It Sleep because its moody undertones and true-to-life depictions of social and family conflicts were thought to be unmarketable to the nation's readers, who were struggling with the depression." It took decades until a critic wrote of it favorably enough to bring it to the public's attention again, when in 1964 Irving Howe published a review on the front page of the New York Times Book Review, making it a national bestseller."For its combination of realistic detail, psychological symbolism, and modernist techniques, [Call It Sleep] marks an important transition in Jewish-American literature from the works of early immigrant writers such as Abraham Cahan and Anzia Yezierska to later modern voices such as Saul Bellow and Philip Roth" (American National Biography).San Francisco: Arion Press, 1995. Quarto, green half morocco, original decorated cloth, original decorated slipcase. A fine copy. Fine.

        Flowers of Mayo

Dublin: De Búrca 1995 - Dr. Patrick Browne’s Fasciculus Plantarum Hiberniae 1788. With sixteen specially commissioned watercolours and other illustrations by Wendy Walsh. pp. xiv, 275, 4. Quarter goatskin on handmade paper. Superb in slipcase. This treasure contains an authoritative biographical essay by Dr. Nelson about the Mayo botanist Dr. Patrick Browne (c.1720-1790), and the full text of Browne’s hitherto unpublished flora of Ireland accompanied by modern annotations and botanical notes by Dr. Nelson. Fifteen specially commissioned full-colour botanical portraits and other illustrations by Wendy Walsh, of flowers and plants associated with Browne’s Mayo studies embellish the book: each illustration has a landscape background depicting Mayo localities, including Ballintubber Abbey, Castle Bourke, Crossboyne Parish Church, Croagh Patrick, etc. Transcriptions and translations of Dr. Patrick Browne’s correspondence with the eminent Swedish naturalist, Dr. Carl Linnaeus, and transcriptions of Browne’s little-known catalogues of Irish birds and fishes form the appendices. Nothing has been spared in the design and production of this volume, which we can describe with confidence as one of the finest Irish publications for decades. “I wish to tell you that I am so delighted with ‘Flowers of Mayo’ and to thank you for publishing such a completely satisfying and beautiful book. It is on the scale of workmanship seldom seen today, binding, paper, printing all reflect the thought and care that you have put into its production and my copy will be a treasured possession, both to look at and to read” – Wendy Walsh to Éamonn de Búrca, 24th November, 1995.         OVIRI. SAVAGE.

(Niagara Falls: Lilliput Press, 1995). 9 x 11. 25 leaves printed, engraved, hand painted by pochoir, collaged, gilded on Japanese and mould-made papers by Carol Schwartzott. Artist's printed Addendum about the making of this book is laid in. Text is quotations from Gauguin's Noa Noa. Bound by the artist: laced into boards covered with a "pandanus type of fiber," pandanus being indigenous to the Pacific. The tray case is lined with patterns based on tapa cloth. A fine copy of a lush and tactile book conveying the sensual, primitive aura of Gauguin's Tahitian world. "Oviri is Tahitian for "savage," and is the name Gauguin gave his ceramic sculpture. Carol Schwartzott has been creating books since the 1960s. Her work has been seen in numerous exhibitions of Artists'' Books, and featured in the National Museum of Women in the Arts. This is no. 3 of 3 copies.
