New York City, NY: Scalo Publishers, Inc. , 1995. First Edition. First Printing.. Softcover. As New/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. New York City, NY: Scalo Publishers, Inc. , 1995. Softcover. As New/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 315 pages. Exhibition monograph presented as an Artist Book. One of the greatest photography books of the 20th century. The First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a very small and limited first print run as a softcover original only. The First Edition is now very scarce. A brilliant production by Jim Goldberg, Philip Brookman, and Hans Werner Holzwarth: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial softcovers with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs and video stills by Jim Goldberg. Stories by the street kids themselves: Runaways, hustlers, and prostitutes, abandoned and discarded by their families, "raised by wolves". Printed on thick coated stock paper by Steidl in Gottingen, Germany to the very highest standards. In publisher's plastic wrappers. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the landmark travelling exhibition, which commenced at the Zurich Museum of Art in 1995 and went on to the Corcoran Gallery of Art and other major American venues between 1996 and 1998. Presents Jim Goldberg's affecting and unforgettable record of his involvement with street kids in Los Angeles and San Francisco over a ten-year period. Left on their own to roam the jungle called the city, they tell Goldberg their individual stories, in interviews, handwritten notes, letters, and other texts, faithfully reproduced in their entirety and brilliantly interspersed with Goldberg's photographs and video clips. The result is a true collaboration between artist/photographer and subject/storyteller. It is hard to imagine how successfully the exhibition was mounted because the book itself is perfect, a seamless fusion of image and text. Goldberg's imagery is haunting, stark, and compelling while the kids' stories are rich, complex, and riveting that one ends up poring over every image and reading every word, and yet hunger for more. It is a mistake to think of "Raised By Wolves" as a film in book form. Even if it were, it has more in common with Pier Paolo Pasolini than with Mary Ellen Mark's "Streetwise" or Larry Clark. Goldberg's unique achievement is to tell his subjects' stories from their and his own committed points-of-view at the same time. He and his subjects have no "message" for society. They do not want our pity or compassion. They have given us a beautiful book that demands and deserves our loyalty and attention. A "must-have" title for Jim Goldberg collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by Jim Goldberg. This title is now highly collectible. As far as we know, this is the only signed copy of the First Edition/First Printing available online and has absolutely no flaws, a pristine beauty. Most copies that turn up online have major flaws and are Second Printings. A rare signed copy thus. 198 duotone and 45 color plates. Jim Goldberg's "Rich and Poor" was selected as one of the "Seminal Photography Books" in the "Book of 101 Books". "Raised By Wolves" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest living photographers. A fine collectible copy. . ISBN 1881616509.

        Central Asia

Petersfield & Washington, The Barbican Publishing Company, , 1995. A Contribution towards the better Knowledge of the Topography, Ethnography, Resources, and History … 7 parts in 10 sections, large octavo. Original plum cloth, title gilt to spines. Very good. Facsimile reprint of MacGregor's encyclopaedic intelligence resource on the region, originally published "confidentially" in Calcutta between 1871–75. The seven parts cover the north-west frontier in three sections: Afghanistan, Belochistan, Persia, Asiatic Turkey and Caucasia, the khanat of Bokhara, Kashmir and Ladakh. Almost unobtainable in its original form, the text is here reprinted from the British Library's India Office Records collection, the most complete in existence. The print-run of this facsimile was intended to be 300, but due to the publisher's bankruptcy only about 30 complete sets were produced. "MacGregor was Quartermaster-General of the Indian Army, and head of its new Intelligence Department. A firm proponent of the 'Forward Policy', which maintained that possible Russian designs on India could be checked only by military might and the creation of buffer states … A bluff, stern man of idiosyncratic disposition, MacGregor was the model for Colonel Creighton in Rudyard Kipling's Kim, and the effective instigator of the second phase of the Great Game" (French, Younghusband).

The Green Frog Service : Wedgwood & Bentley's Imperial Russian Service

Cacklegoose Press Ltd, London 1995 - Copy no. 914 of the edition of 1000 copies, of which the first 25 are a special leather-bound edition, a further 25 were for collaborators on the publication, and 350 copies were for subscribers; with 600 numbered copies for general sale. 424 pages, over 350 large detailed illustrations, 60 colour plates and more than 1000 reference illustrations, presenting for the first time the entire service in colour and monochrome plates. The crowning achievement of the great English potter Josiah Wedgwood was a dinner and dessert service decorated with hand-painted views of England, Scotland and Wales, commissioned by Empress Catherine the Great of Russia. Known as the Green Frog Service, it provides one of the finest surviving pictorial records of 18th-century Britain. Commissioned and produced in 1773-4, the Service was destined for a 'palace' Catherine was building in English Gothick style as a staging post between St Petersburg and her summer residence at Tsarskoe Selo. Surrounded by marshes, the palace was known as La Grenouillère, hence the device of a bright green frog that appears on every piece of the Service. The Empress particularly asked for views of landscape gardens, and many of the finest gardens in Britain are depicted, together with a great array of 'Antiquities' . ruined castles and abbeys, old manor houses, Cornish dolmens . as well as romantic landscapes, views on the Thames at London and even early industrial sites. Arabian Nights & Days [Signed, Murray Gell-Man's copy]

New York: Doubleday, 1995. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/near fine. A Fine, Superior, copy of the first American edition, first printing, in a Near Fine dust jacket, SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY NAGUIB MAHFOUZ on the half-title. Originally published in Arabic in 1979, the novel's title was inspired by the classic "A Thousand and One Nights". Naguib Mahfouz "who, through works rich in nuance - now clear-sightedly realistic, now evocatively ambiguous - has formed an Arabian narrative art that applies to all mankind", won the 1988 Nobel Prize in Literature, making him the only Egyptian, and the only author writing in Arabic, ever to win the Prize. In 1994 Mahfouz survived an assassination attempt perpetrated by religious extremists. The attack damaged nerves in his right hand, rendering Mahfouz unable to write for more than a few minutes each day, and seriously affecting his handwriting as seen in his inscription and signature to this book. (The inscription is in Arabic.) Having a wonderful Provenance, this copy belonged to Murray Gell-Man, the American physicist and linguist who himself won the 1969 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on the theory of elementary particles and for his discovery of the quark, and carries his bookplate on the front free endpaper. Signed copies of this Nobel Prize winner's books are scarce. A Fine, Superior, copy, of this this Nobel Laureate's work from the library of another important Nobel Laureate. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY NAGUIB MAHFOUZ. RARE.

Daemonum investigatio peripatetica In qua explicatur locus Hippocratis in Progn. Si quid diuinum in morbis habetur. Florence: Giunta. 1580.

Exceedingly rare first edition of a quite important work on witchcraft, demonology, Hippocratic medicine, and Aristotelian science by the Italian scientist, botanist, physiologist, and philosopher Andreas Cesalpino [Caesalpinus]. Here Cesalpino set out to reduce evidence of witchcraft and demons to a literal science so that he could then examine and study it in a proper ?Aristotelian? manner in order to ?discover a role for the physician in diagnosing and treating possession? (Clark, ?Hippocratic Medicine and Aristotelian Science in the ?Daemonum investigatio peripatetica? of Andrea Cesalpino,? Bulletin of the History of Medicine, 69: 4 (1995: Winter) p. 527). ?By returning to Hippocratic tradition and seeking to validate it through Aristotelian science, Cesalpino thought he had discovered the proper unifying principles of medicine and natural philosophy which would allow him to view possession as a process of nature? (ibid., 541).As the title of Cesalpino?s work suggests, he also ?examines the problem of demonic possession by explaining a passage of Hippocrates that dealt with the question of whether there is anything divine in diseases. The treatise appeared at the height of a flurry of theological and scientific inquiry into the nature and role of demons, in which almost all agreed that in one way or another demons are real, physical entities working within the natural scheme of things. Demons achieve their magical effects, it was generally believed, through an extraordinary knowledge of cause and effects and by their unusual constitution (the fineness of their bodies, their swiftness, etc.). Several thinkers had raised the question of how this view of demons might affect the functions of the physician and the exorcist, since traditionally the former treated natural diseases, the latter supernatural. Cesalpino sought to treat the topic more fully and systematically? (Clark, p. 527).CONDITION & DETAILS: 8vo. 8 x 5.75 inches (200 x 143mm). [2], 52 pages, [2]. ILLUSTRATION: Woodcut device on title; woodcut historiated initials and endpieces; large woodcut device on final page (not called for in Adams).BINDING: Bound in full vellum. Small repair to the vellum on the rear board (see scan). Very tightly bound. Exceptional condition. INTERIOR: Complete. Meticulously rendered repairs to upper margins, never impacting text. Occasional age spotting and toning. Very clean throughout. Very good condition. RARITY: This volume is very scarce and there are no copies of it for sale on the Internet. A Copac search of European institutional libraries found only three copies (Oxford, Wellcome, & Glasgow). REFERENCES: Censimento 16 CNCE 10932; Wellcome 1180; Caillet 1889.

Autograph musical working manuscript draft in short score of the Sinfonisches Vorspiel for large orchestra. The complete work

4 pp. Notated in pencil on 32-stave "Star Nr. 37" music manuscript paper. Large folio (420 x 230 mm.). Unbound. & & Signed, titled and inscribed to the composer's friend Jürgen Köchel by the composer. Dated May 25, [19]94. Dedicated to the conductor Gerd Albrecht. Scored for triple wind, 4 horns, 3 trombones, tuba, 3 performers on timpani, harp, piano and strings. & & A very active manuscript, with numerous corrections, amendations, directions and indications pertaining to instrumentation in Schnittke's small, dense hand. & & Slightly worn. In very good condition overall. & & Together with a printed edition of the full score published by Sikorski in ca. 1995. . Designed as a tribute to the composer on his 60th birthday, the Sinfonisches Vorspiel was first performed at the Musikhalle in Hamburg on November 6, 1994 with the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester, conducted by Albrecht, the dedicatee; the composer was unfortunately unable to attend due to ill-health. & & Schnittke moved to Hamburg in 1990 to teach composition at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater. He had had his first stroke in 1985; he suffered a second in 1991 and yet another in the year of composition of the present work, 1994, which left him almost completely paralysed. He went on to write only a few more short works thereafter, and also a Ninth Symphony, but its score was almost completely illegible because he was forced by his paralysis to notate it with his left hand.& & Schnittke is often considered to be the successor to Shostakovich as Russia's premiere composer. His early music showed the strong influence of Dmitri Shostakovich, but he went on to adopt a very polystylistic approach to composition. As his health worsened, however, he adopted a somewhat bleaker but more accessible style; some Schnittke scholars have argued, in fact, that it is the composer's late works that will ultimately be considered as the most influential of his entire output. & & A dynamic working manuscript of one of Schnittke's last major orchestral compositions.

        JOURNALS MID-FIFTIES 1954 - 1958

[New York]: HarperCollins, [1995].. Cloth and gilt boards. Soft crease in front free endsheet, else about fine in slightly spine-sunned dust jacket. First edition. Edited by Gordon Ball. Inscribed and signed by Ginsberg on the title-page: "Allen Ginsberg 5/28/95 for Lucien Carr steadfast Affection Decade after Decade." The top portion of the title page is framed by Ginsberg's drawing of a "Tyger!" Laid in is publisher's compliments card, noting the copy was sent on Ginsberg's behalf. Ginsberg met Carr at Columbia University in 1943, and through Carr met Jack Kerouac, Neal Cassady and William Burroughs. In the NYT Obituary for Carr (30 January 2005), Ginsberg's earlier comment about Carr's role in the circle of friendships that gave birth to the literary arm of the Beat generation was quoted: "Lou was the glue." Carr went to work for United Press International in 1946 and was promoted to night news editor in 1956, coincident with the preparations for press of the first public edition of HOWL. Carr was included, with Kerouac, Burroughs and Cassady, in the printed dedication, and when he received his copy, wrote Ginsberg expressing "one small gripe" about his inclusion there, and requesting, out of deference to his privacy, that Ginsberg avoid such mention in future books. At Ginsberg's expense, Carr's name was deleted from the dedication page of the second impression (then already printed), and from subsequent printings. Nonetheless, in 1982, Ginsberg dedicated PLUTONIAN ODE to Carr, "... for friendship all these years...." Carr, of course, figures in the text and index.
