A Further Adventure of Sherlock Holmes: The Adventure of the Dorset Street Lodger, by John H. Watson M.D

London: Number Two Dorset Street. Near Fine. [1995]. First Edition. Hardcover. NOISBN . (no dust jacket, presumably as issued) [extremely light handling wear, spine cloth a bit faded; gift inscription from a "David" on the front pastedown, with a somewhat cryptic inscription, possibly to himself: "The perfect guest. A momento from him be this."]. (B&W illustrations) One of the rarest items of modern-day Sherlockiana, this anonymous "further adventure" was written by Michael Moorcock, by his account, "for some friends who had started a hotel in Dorset Street, as a special give-away for their first guests." Its conceit is that it was written by Dr. Watson in 1895, but at the behest of Sherlock Holmes, who wished the tale only to "be published, if published at all, one hundred years after the date of the last record, when those involved will be long dead and events so remote as no longer to embarrass living descendants," Watson placed the manuscript in the strongbox of his "good friend, Sir Arthur Moorcock of the Tower House, near Dent," there to be held safely until the requisite century had passed. (This is the only place that the name "Moorcock" appears in the book.) It's unknown how many copies of the original edition were printed -- I've seen the figure 200, although that seems to be total speculation -- but in any event there couldn't have been many. (For one thing, some of the original recipients most certainly would have regarded it as little more than a promotional giveaway-cum-throwaway.) .

Arithmeticorum libri sex, et de numeris multangulis liber unus. Cum commentariis C.G. Bacheti V.C. & observationibus D.P. de Fermat senatoris Tolosani.Toulouse: Bernard Bosc, 1670.

First edition of Fermat's discoveries in number theory and first printing of his celebrated 'last theorem', one of the most famous problems in mathematics and unsolved for over 325 years until its solution in 1995. Norman 777. <br/><br/> A Toulouse parlementaire with a passion for numbers, Fermat was one of the most brilliant mathematicians of his or any time. He made important discoveries in analytic geometry and algebra, and was the first European to make extensive contributions to the theory of numbers, which he restricted in principle to the domain of integers, establishing it as an independent branch of mathematics. Since most of his work in the realm of number theory remained unpublished in his lifetime and of limited circulation later, "it was neither understood nor appreciated until Euler revived it and initiated the line of continuous research that culminated in the work of Gauss and Kummer in the early nineteenth century. Indeed, many of Fermat's results are basic elements of number theory today... The importance of Fermat's work in the theory of numbers lay less in any contribution to contemporary developments in mathematics than in their stimulative effect on later generations" (DSB). His work paved the way notably for the development of the differential calculus.<br/><br/> Fermat showed not the slightest interest in publishing his work, which remained confined to his correspondence, personal notes, and to marginal jottings in a copy of the 1621 <i>editio princeps</i>, edited by Claude Bachet, of Diophantus' <i>Arithmetica</i>. Fermat's marginalia included not only arguments against some of Bachet's conclusions, but also new problems inspired by Diophantus. After his death, Fermat's eldest son Clement-Samuel published in 1670 his father's marginalia in this new edition. Most famous of the 48 observations by Fermat included here is the tantalizing note that appears on fol. H3r; stating one of the most famous problems in mathematics; the impossibility of finding a positive integer </i>n > 2</i> for which the equation <i>xn + yn = zn</i> holds true for the positive integers <i>x</i>, <i>y</i>, and <i>z</i>. Fermat noted that he had discovered a 'truly marvelous demonstration' of this proposition, but that the margin was too narrow to transcribe it. The proposition, so simple in form, became known as the single most difficult problem in mathematics, and for over 325 years no mathematician succeeded either in disproving it or in finding Fermat's mysterious proof. In 1995 Andrew Wiles, professor of mathematics at Princeton, who had been obsessed with Fermat's proposition since the age of 10, completed a 130-page proof of the theorem (first presented in 1993, with a flaw that required revision), using the most advanced techniques of modern mathematics. His achievement was described by fellow mathematicians as the mathematical equivalent 'of splitting the atom or finding the structure of DNA' (Simon Singh). Nonetheless, Wiles had had to resort to sophisticated 20th-century techniques not available to Fermat. The exact form of Fermat's proof, if indeed he had a genuine one, thus remains one of the great unsolved puzzles of mathematics.. Folio (333 x 225 mm), contemporary sheepskin with richly gilt spine, pp [12] 64; 341 [i.e., 343, pp 337-343 mispaginated 335-341]; 48. Capitals and corners with some chipping and wear, boards with some scratches, spine lightly rubbed, but a fine and entirely untouched copy in its original state, internally fresh and clean

        Al Aaraaf

Livre d'Art by D'Ambrosio [Sherman Oaks:] Livre d'Art by D'Ambrosio, 1995 One of fifty copies printed letterpress on Lana Royal Classic paper. Signed on the title-page by D'Ambrosio. Trapezoidal shape binding in quarter blue morocco and mirrored panel boards, housed with the original trapezoidal two-part display stand and cover with further mirrored paneling. . Octavo. Printed letterpress in black and purple with woodcut backgrounds in various colors, several pages with embossed margins. A fine copy. Based on the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe's discovery of what later would be termed a supernovaâ??Al Aaraaf (a star that arose upon the night in a brilliant flash, stayed for a short while, and then disappeared), Edgar Allan Poe created this metaphysical communication of fleeting beauty. In it he juggles time and space between reality and fantasy. I had no recourse but to do the same. However, I did start with a basic premise, which is that when one passes a mirror, one can see one's image and the surrounding scene. Once past the mirror, one disappears from the view but the reflection of the surrounding scene continues: a visual presentation of the term 'evanescence.' During the period of the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe (1546-1601), all heavenly bodies were given Arabic names. The structure of the book, therefore, had to evoke that background, along with the spirit of a beautiful thing arising and then passing forever from view. Hence, I created a mirrored polybhedron with unintellible but real script that evokes Arabic writing (but not Arabic) banding its throatâ?¦" (Joseph D'Ambrosio in A Memoir of Book Design 1969-2000).

Takarajima Books (New York): Takarajima Books. (1995). First. First American edition, publisher's maquette. Introduction by Alexandra Anderson-Spivy. Afterword by Mary Gaitskill. Folio. Publisher's maquette, that is, a pre-publication handmade example of the book prepared by the publisher's design staff, consisting of unprinted pages bound in cloth, with both the text and offset linescreen examples of the Gibson images affixed to the blank pages with paste, with a handmade mockup of the dustwrapper with image, cover and flap text all affixed with paste (and which differs slightly from the published version). Most notable is that this version includes six images that were not included in the final published version of the book. One block of text (the title on the title page) has detached but is present, else very near fine in near fine dustwrapper, with plastic affixed over the jacket, presumably by the publisher. Offered with a first American edition of the final book. Almost certainly a unique publisher's maquette for the book. .

        Independence Day

London: Harvill. (1995). An advance copy of the first British edition, with printed text on the front cover that indicates that the "text is not the final version," and, in fact, this text does seem to be an earlier state than that of not only the British trade edition but the U.S. edition as well. The text does seem to match that of the British advance reading copy. Tapebound sheets in printed cardstock covers. Signed by the author. Approximately 8-3/8" x 11-3/4". Photoreproduced name on front cover; dusty rear cover; else fine. An uncommon view of an early state of the text of Ford&#39;s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. . First Edition. Softcover.

        Call It Sleep

San Francisco: Arion Press, 1995. Leather Bound. Fine. &#147;Call It Sleep is the most profound novel of Jewish life that I have ever read by an American&#148;& Alfred Kazin --- New York Review of Books& & ROTH, Henry. Call It Sleep. San Francisco: Arion Press, 1995. Limited Edition of 300 printed in 1995 and SIGNED BY ROTH. Quarter green morocco over green cloth boards printed with a brick tenement building design and housed in a matching slipcase. Illustrated with 48 photographs of New York City contemporary to the setting of the novel (1910). Fine Condition. & & Henry Roth (1906-1995) immigrated to New York City in 1907 with his parents from Austria-Hungary. His Yiddish speaking family lived in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn before moving to the Lower East Side in 1910, &#147;a virtual Jewish mini-state,&#148; as Roth later called it. During his college years at the City College of New York he began to write. Call It Sleep, published in 1934, records the six years in the life of a Jewish immigrant boy, David Schearl, in a New York ghetto just prior to World War I. The novel received moderate praise upon publication and then Roth, suffering from tremendous writer&#146;s block did not publish again until 1994. Call It Sleep was rediscovered in the 1960&#146;s and finally recognized for the genre establishing breakthrough that it created. &#147;&#133; no one has ever distilled such poetry and wit from the counterpoint between maimed English and the subtle Yiddish of the immigrant. No one has reproduced so sensitively the terror of family life in the imagination of a child caught between two cultures.&#148; (Leslie A. Fiedler)

(New York: Center for Book Arts. 1995). 18 3/8" x 18 1/4", hardcover with clamshell. n.p.. First edition limited to 100 signed and numbered copies. Alfonso A. Ossorio (1916-1990) was an abstract expressionist artist who was born in Manila and produced a body of work that remained consistently international in scope. His early fascination with Surrealism gave way to Abstract Expressionism although he continued to be influenced by his native Philippine Catholic folk art as well as the modernist techniques of Informel and assemblage. Instead of completely abandoning one set of principles for another, he would continue to incorporate those features he most favored into his next series of compositions which resulted in complex and multifaceted works. In failing health, he was hospitalized from January 17 to February 8, 1989 and December 3 to 5, 1990. Given some markers and watercolor paper, he began a series of drawings that would become this striking collection of images. The publication was designed by Richard Minsky, with texts by Rose Slivka, Dr. Lewis Thomas and B.H. Friedman. Each print, mounted and matted on Stonehenge paper, was printed on Permalife paper and authenticated in the margin with the seal of the Ossorio Foundation. Letterpress printed at the Center for Book Arts. This volume is housed in a red cloth clamshell box. .

For Rosenbach. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1995. First Edition. Print. Art; Sendak; Commercial lithography ; Elephant Folio 23" tall; 1 pages; Maurice Bernard Sendak (born June 10, 1928) is an American writer and illustrator of children&#39;s literature. He is best known for his book "Where the Wild Things Are," published in 1963. Sendak gained international acclaim after writing and illustrating "Where the Wild Things Are," a Caldecott Medal-winning picture book about a boy banished to his bedroom without his supper. He deals with his anger by imagining himself king of an island filled with enormous, frightening monsters. Critically acclaimed and controversial, Sendak is one of the first children&#39;s writers to deal frankly with the fears and anxieties of childhood. "Where the Wild Things Are" is the first in a trilogy, to be followed by "In the Night Kitchen" (1970) and "Outside over There" (1981) , which, in Sendak&#39;s words, are "all variations on the same theme: how children master various feelings--anger, boredom, fear, frustration, jealousy--and manage to come to grips with the realities of their lives." Mr. Sendak&#39;s original drawings are constantly in demand by museums, art galleries and collectors everywhere. Although most of his original work is archived at the Rosenbach Museum & Library in Philadelphia, his pictures are represented in many major collections around the world. It understates his importance to simply call him a genius in his field: he has been called "the Picasso of Children&#39;s Books", and for more than a half-century his work has been critically praised, admired and emulated. Retrospective exhibitions have been held at the Ashmolean Museum (Oxford, 1975) , the Pierpont Morgan library (New York, 1981) , the Indianapolis Museum of Art (1999) , the Brennan Jewish Heritage Museum in Atlanta (2001, a version of which went on national tour) , the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Books (November 2002) , Brandywine River Museum (2003) , and most recently a remarkable survey of his art at the Jewish Museum (New York, 2005) covering both his book work and sets/costumes for opera and ballet, subsequently extending the show to the Tampa Art Museum in Florida (2006). This is an original full-color poster for the installation of an interactive Sendak exhibition at the Please Touch Museum and a joint retrospective of Maurice Sendak&#146;s art with reference to his influences at the Rosenbach. This uncommon poster illustrates a Colonial-stylized Wild Thing &#147;William Penn&#148; standing atop City Hall flanked by Max and another Wild Thing. The work (Hanrahan C25) is in excellent condition, signed on the "dome" inside illustration. It should be noted that this Sendak poster comes directly from the artist&#39;s own archive. Red objects in the picture are positioning magnets. ; Signed by Illustrator .
