Exterior shows lean to spine, rubbing and edge wear, with a strip of discoloration to the edge of the front board. The spine shows light reading creases, and the side of the page block is lightly soiled.

[Attributes: Soft Cover]

PHILIPS: TIJDENS DE BEZETTING [PHILIPS: DURING THE OCCUPATION]

1995. Paperback. 1. WORLD WAR II. PHILIPS: TIJDENS DE BEZETTING [PHILIPS: DURING THE OCCUPATION]. Eindhoven, Philips Corp. 1945. 8vo (5 3/4 x 8"), pictorial wraps, near Fine. Printed on one side of the paper, each page has a full color illustration depicting events leading to the takeover of the Phillips Corporation by the Nazi occupation of Holland. It presents events during the occupation including one page of concentration camp members at work in the factory. On 9 May 1940, the Philips directors learned that the German invasion of the Netherlands was to take place the following day. Having prepared for this, Anton Philips and his son in law Frans Otten, as well as other Philips family members, fled to the United States. Frits Philips, the son of Anton, was the only Philips family member to stay in the Netherlands and run the factory. He saved the lives of 382 Jews by convincing the Nazis that they were indispensable for the production process at Philips. In 1943 he was sent to a concentration camp for 4 months because a strike at his factory reduced production. For his actions in saving the hundreds of Jews, he was recognized by Yad Vashem in 1995 as a "Righteous Among the Nations". Frits Philips has written the foreward with W.F. Otten.

Dali. Catalogue Raisonne of Prints II: Lithographs and Wood Engravings, 1956-80

-Prestel 19 Oct - 1995 - Catalogue raisonne. First English edition. 305x240mm 192 pages. Illustrated in 85 colour and 608 black and white plates. Cloth. Some damage (paper scrapped) to half-title verso (portrait of Dali), otherwise very good in dustjacket. Salvador Dali, who was born in Figueras in Catalonia in 1904 and died there 85 years later, was one of the most important of the Surrealists. Simultaneously a painter, writer, filmmaker and, above all, a showman, the artist created an enormous wealth of material by means of his versatile talents. With his self-dramatization and skilful establishment of his own personality as a work of art, he was a model for many other 20th-century artists. In their acknowledgements to "Salvador Dali: Catalogue Raisonne of Prints I - Etchings and Mixed-Media Prints, 1924-1980", published in 1993, authors Ralf Michier and Lutz W. Loepsinger thanked Robert Descharnes, Dali's personal secretary of many years, for "protecting us from the small band of interested parties who tried to obstruct our research, even into forgeries, by means of intimidation, threats of litigation, and intrigue." Although Dali produced far fewer lithographs and wood engravings than etchings and mixed-media graphics, the problems encountered by the authors for this second volume were in no way diminished, as once again there exist a large number of forgeries that were made on signed sheets of blank paper. This title illustrates the total output of this bizarre period of the artist's life. Until 1956, Dali rejected lithography as an artistic medium. He considered the technique "weak and bureaucratic". It was only the insistence of the publisher Josef Foret that led him to become more involved, in a predictably unconventional fashion, however. He worked on stone, both on the Paris streets and in his garden in Cadaques. Light bulbs filled with lithographic ink were smashed against stone, or ink-filled bullets were fired at printing plates from antique rifles or crossbows to produce the first tachist graphics in history.         The Real World of Manuel Córdova,

[Sherman Oaks, California Ninja Press, 1995] One of 160 signed and numbered copies in the edition along with 18 lettered hors commerce. 3.5 inches by 13.25 inches. Opens to 15 feet. 47 pages. . Printed in hand set Samson Uncial on kakishibu, a persimmon-washed and smoked handmade paper from the Fuji Paper Mills Cooperative in Tokushima, Japan. The accordion-style book may be read in hand, stanza by stanza, or opened entirely to reveal all forty-three, fourteen-line stanzas. Fully extended, the book is fifteen feet long. The image of a river undulates alongside the poem while the setting of the poem itself mirrors the serpentine meanders of the river. The river is printed from photopolymer plates in five colors gradually intermingling one after another. The book's enclosure is a heavy cream-colored raw flax sheet, handmade at the Center For the Book Papermaking Facility at the University of Iowa. The enclosure is lined with kakishibu on which is printed a map of the world, the first to show the world's currents, drawn by Athanasius Kircher in 1665. The map is hand-tinted with pencil in five colors echoing the colors of the river. The enclosure is fastened with alum-tawed goat skin and bone. . This single, long poem by W. S. Merwin was inspired by events in the life of Manuel Córdova-Rios; extraordinary events that took place deep in the forest at the headwaters of the Amazon River in 1907. Both book and enclosure are housed in an acrylic slipcase. Fine. One of my favorites among her books is her edition of W.S. Merwin's long poem, The Real World of Manuel Córdova, finished in 1995. It is a poem about a river, printed as a river, so it becomes the map of a river, on paper that ripples like a river and is as richly colored as water gorged with red Amazonian mud. It is river of words and a map of the mind, but it is also, first and last, a book, and so the sheet, 15 feet long, folds into something as compact as a Javanese or Tibetan sutra" (Robert Bringhurst in The Art of the Book in California: Five Contemporary Presses).
