Daemonum investigatio peripatetica In qua explicatur locus Hippocratis in Progn. Si quid diuinum in morbis habetur. Florence: Giunta. 1580

EXCEEDINGLY RARE FIRST EDITION of a quite important work on witchcraft, demonology, Hippocratic medicine, and Aristotelian science by the Italian scientist, botanist, physiologist, and philosopher Andreas Cesalpino [Caesalpinus]. Here Cesalpino set out to reduce evidence of witchcraft and demons to a literal science so that he could then examine and study it in a proper 'Aristotelian' manner in order to "discover a role for the physician in diagnosing and treating possession" (Clark, "Hippocratic Medicine and Aristotelian Science in the 'Daemonum investigatio peripatetica' of Andrea Cesalpino," Bulletin of the History of Medicine, 69: 4 (1995: Winter) p. 527). "By returning to Hippocratic tradition and seeking to validate it through Aristotelian science, Cesalpino thought he had discovered the proper unifying principles of medicine and natural philosophy which would allow him to view possession as a process of nature" (ibid., 541). As the title of Cesalpino's work suggests, he also "examines the problem of demonic possession by explaining a passage of Hippocrates that dealt with the question of whether there is anything divine in diseases. The treatise appeared at the height of a flurry of theological and scientific inquiry into the nature and role of demons, in which almost all agreed that in one way or another demons are real, physical entities working within the natural scheme of things. Demons achieve their magical effects, it was generally believed, through an extraordinary knowledge of cause and effects and by their unusual constitution (the fineness of their bodies, their swiftness, etc.). Several thinkers had raised the question of how this view of demons might affect the functions of the physician and the exorcist, since traditionally the former treated natural diseases, the latter supernatural. Cesalpino sought to treat the topic more fully and systematically" (Clark, p. 527). REFERENCES: Censimento 16 CNCE 10932; Wellcome 1180; Caillet 1889. CONDITION & DETAILS: Florence: Giunta. 8vo. 8 x 5.75 inches (200 x 143mm). [2], 52 pages, [2]. Illustration: Woodcut device on title; woodcut historiated initials and endpieces; large woodcut device on final page (not called for in Adams). Binding: Bound in full vellum. Small repair to the vellum on the rear board (see scan). Very tightly bound. Exceptional condition. Interior: Complete. Meticulously rendered repairs to upper margins, never impacting text. Occasional age spotting and toning. Very clean throughout. Very good condition.

Theorematis fundamentalis in doctrina de residuis quadraticis demonstrationes et ampliationes novae.Göttingen: H. Dieterich, 1818.

First edition, offprint issue and an exceptionally fine copy, of this important memoir in which Gauss provided a fifth and sixth proof of his great law of quadratic reciprocity, which he privately referred to as the <i>Aureum Theorema</i> (Golden Theorem). These two proofs are particularly important since, as Gauss explains in the introduction to the present work, the techniques they employ ('Gauss's lemma' and 'Gauss sums,' respectively) can be applied to the study of cubic and biquadratic reciprocity. These ideas were indeed used by many mathematicians, including Gauss himself, in the study of higher reciprocity laws from the nineteenth century through to the present day. Attempts to demonstrate one of these higher reciprocity laws led in 1995 to the proof of Fermat's last theorem (see below).<br/><br/> The law of quadratic reciprocity was discovered by Euler in 1783, and incomplete proofs were given by Euler himself and in 1788 by Legendre. The law was discovered independently by Gauss when he was just 18, and a year later on 8 April, 1796 he found the first correct proof, which Kronecker (1823-91) aptly called "a test of the power of Gauss's genius." It was published in his greatest work <i>Disquisitiones arithmeticae</i> (1801), in which he wrote: "For a whole year this theorem tormented me and absorbed my greatest efforts until, at last, I obtained a proof." The attempt to generalize quadratic reciprocity for powers higher than the second was one of the main goals that led nineteenth century mathematicians, including Gauss, Dedekind, Dirichlet, Eisenstein, Hilbert, Jacobi and Kummer to the study of general algebraic number fields; notably, Kummer invented 'ideal numbers' in order to state and prove higher reciprocity laws. The ninth in the list of 23 unsolved problems which David Hilbert proposed to the International Congress of Mathematicians in 1900 asked for the "Proof of the most general reciprocity law for an arbitrary number field." <br/><br/> "Gauss' fifth proof of the quadratic reciprocity is Gauss' most elementary proof of the quadratic reciprocity law... for which Gauss has given altogether eight proofs, six of which were published, and two more were found in his papers after his death. The fifth proof was published in 1818, together with the sixth proof, under the title <i>Theorematis Fundamentalis in Doctrina de Residuis Quadraticis Demonstrationes et Ampliationes Novae</i>. But Gauss found it probably already between 1807 and 1808... [it is] based on <i>Gauss' lemma</i>" (Laudal & Piene, p. 276). <br/><br/> "The sixth and last of Gauss' published proofs of the law of quadratic reciprocity was published in 1818... He mentions in the introduction to this paper that for years he had searched for a method that would generalize to the cubic and biquadratic case and that finally his untiring efforts were crowned with success... The purpose of publishing this sixth proof, he states, was to bring to a close that part of the higher arithmetic dealing with quadratic residues and to say, in a sense, farewell..." (Ireland & Rosen, p. 76). <br/><br/> Quadratic reciprocity is a result about 'modular arithmetic.' Two integers (whole numbers) <i>m</i> and <i>n</i> are said to be equal modulo an integer <i>p</i> if <i>m - n</i> is an integer multiple of <i>p</i> (so there are only <i>p</i> distinct integers modulo <i>p</i>). "For almost all its history, the study of modular arithmetic has been driven purely by its inherent beauty and by human curiosity. But in one of those strange pieces of serendipity which often characterize the advance of human knowledge, in the last half century modular arithmetic has found important applications in the "real world." Today, the theory of modular arithmetic (e.g., Reed-Solomon error correcting codes) is the basis for the way DVDs store or satellites transmit large amounts of data without corrupting it. Moreover, the cryptographic codes which keep, for example, our banking transactions secure are also closely connected with the theory of modular arithmetic.<br/><br/> "The first really great achievement in the study of modular arithmetic was Carl Friedrich Gauss's proof in 1796 of his celebrated law of quadratic reciprocity... It states that 'if <i>p</i> is a prime number, then the number of square roots of an integer <i>n</i> in arithmetic modulo <i>p</i> depends only on <i>p</i> modulo 4<i>n</i>'... Gauss's theorem also provides a very effective way of determining the number of square roots a whole number has in arithmetic modulo a prime number <i>p</i>... One could ask for a similar method that given any number of polynomials in any number of variables helps one to determine the number of solutions to those equations in arithmetic modulo a variable prime number <i>p</i>. Such results are referred to as 'reciprocity laws'." (Taylor). <br/><br/> In 1957 the Japanese mathematicians Yutaka Taniyama and Goro Shimura proposed a reciprocity law for cubic equations in two variables. "In the mid-1980s, Gerhard Frey, Jean-Pierre Serre, and Kenneth Ribet showed that the Shimura-Taniyama reciprocity law, if true, would imply Fermat's Last Theorem. Motivated by this, in 1995, Andrew Wiles, partly in collaboration with the author, established many cases of the Shimura-Taniyama reciprocity law and hence finally proved Fermat's Last Theorem" (<i>ibid</i>.). <br/><br/> Cajori, <i>A History of Mathematics</i>, pp. 435-36; Poggendorff, I, 854-57; K. Ireland & M. I. Rosen, <i>A classical introduction to modern number theory</i>, 1998; O. A. Laudal & R. Piene, <i>The legacy of Niels Henrik Abel</i>, 2004.         THE STONE RAFT - Rare Signed Copy of The First American Edition/First Printing

New York City, NY: Harcourt Brace, 1995 - 1st Printing. Signed. 292 pages. Published in 1995. The author's fourth novel to be translated into English. One of the greatest novels of the 20th century. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a tiny first print run as a hardcover original only that was made possible by a grant from the National Library of Portugal. The First Edition is now very scarce. Presents Jose Saramago's "A Jangada de Pedra" in a felicitous English translation. What if Portugal and Spain, once omnipotent world powers now reduced to second-class status in The Great Continent, were to break away altogether from Europe and become adrift like a raft on the Atlantic? Saramago's profound and beautiful novel imagines just such a break-up (which results from a massive crack in the Pyrenees) in one of his greatest creations. "The silent dogs of Cerbere begin to bark, a sign that the universe is coming to an end. People start to wander about aimlessly. The Portuguese Government resigns as it becomes clear that the new island is going to collide with the Azores. With death and destruction seemingly imminent, a group of strangers ends up together, and their lives are transformed" (Publisher's blurb). As in all of his oeuvre, acutely so in his late, post-Nobel Prize work, Saramago re-visits and re-examines "the human condition", that otherwise exhausted inheritance from the idea and the reality called Europe and The Enlightenment, and sees it with fresh eyes through the prism of Apocalypse/"The End". Often described as a satirist, Saramago's work goes much deeper, and he is perhaps the greatest modern literary ironist since Franz Kafka. An important distinction: A satirist mocks, makes fun of, and laughs at others; an ironist mocks, makes fun of, and laughs at himself, that is, makes us laugh at his pain. "Arguably the greatest writer of our time. He throws a dazzling flash of lightning on his subjects" (The Chicago Tribune). Saramago was an anomaly who came out of nowhere, seemingly born a genius. Every single page of every single book he has ever written makes the reader feel that he or she is in the hands of an unsurpassable Master. An absolute "must-have" title for Jose Saramago collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by Jose Saramago. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page or bookplate. This title is a great book. This is one of very few signed copies of the First American Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Among the Nobel Laureates and other great writers of our time, Saramago's signature was probably the most difficult to get because he rarely left Lanzarote, the island he moved to at the height of his fame. Now that he is dead, he isn't signing any more copies. And yet, signed copies of his books, while not exactly cheap, remain under-priced as compared to those of say, Gabriel Garcia Marquez or Cormac McCarthy. While they are great writers, Saramago will be regarded by posterity as a greater writer than both of them, and there is no British or American novelist of the last fifty years, living or dead, who comes close to Saramago's achievement (except, according to Harold Bloom, for Philip Roth at his best). A rare signed copy thus. Regarded by Harold Bloom as one of the two greatest novelists of our time (the other being Philip Roth), Jose Saramago will be read as probably the greatest European novelist of the last fifty years. Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1998. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER JOSE SARAMAGO TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0151851980. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

"VINTAGE DR. GONZO": Limited Edition, Signed Silkscreen Print

(Lexington, KY:: Petro III Graphics). 1995. First edition. Number 49 of 500 copies SIGNED BY BOTH THOMPSON AND STEADMAN. Steadman&#39;s illustration, which first appeared on page 79 of Thompson&#39;s FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS. This iconic image of Thompson was printed May 6, 1995, to commemorate, to the day, 25 years of collaboration. Thompson is notoriously difficult to pin down for signings--the edition was signed at Thompson&#39;s cabin in Woody Creek, Colorado, during the 121st "Run for the Roses," i.e., the Kentucky Derby, where Thompson and Steadman first worked together (reportedly on the trunk of Thompson&#39;s Cadillac, "The Shark").         Adult Comedy Action Drama (Signed)

New York, Berlin, Zurich : Scalo, 1995. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. This is a signed first edition, first printing of the critically acclaimed photobook Adult Comedy Action Drama published by Scalo, New York, Berlin, Zurich in 1995. Containing 235 vibrant color images, the book is Prince\'s ode to consumerism. Writing in The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century David Levi Strauss states, An autobiography through words and pictures Adult Comedy Action Drama links together Prince\'s drawings, aphorisms, original photographs and photographs of other peoples\' photographs. Lighthearted and funny, it describes and theatricalizes the visual \'stage set\' of an artist\'s life, enacting all the comedies, actions and dramas with pictures alone. Prince\'s is a postmodern landscape, where one becomes what one beholds\"..\"Adult Comedy Action Drama is a kind of self-portrait of the artist as individual consumer. Or one might think of it as landscape photography, where the landscape is consumerism...Richard Prince, always the classicist, revisits a central concern of art from the beginning of easel painting: the display of constitutive possessions. The New York Times in their review of the book wrote, Prince updates the old Modernist flirtation between the intellectual and the supposedly primitive borrowing conceptual and aesthetic strategies from Duchamp, Jasper Johns, Minimalism and the photography-as-painting movement. Measuring approximately 10 inches x 12 inches, the book is bound in blue paper boards with a photographically illustrated dust jacket. The book and dust jacket are in FINE condition. The book has been signed, dated and inscribed by Richard Prince and is housed in a custom slipcase. Cited in both The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century and The Open Book by Andrew Roth.

        The Perfect Childhood (Signed Edition)

Zurich: Scalo, 1995. Scalo Edition . Hardcover. Fine/Fine. This is a signed edition of \"The Perfect Childhood\" published by Scalo, Zurich in 2005. The true first edition published in 2003 as well as the 2005 Scalo edition were banned in the United States and quickly sold out in Europe. The most controversial section of the book is a formal exercise in obsessive repetition: A twenty-page fellatio sequence involving an underage, angelic-looking boy (who appeared in \"Teenage Lust\" as a \"runaway\") and an older prostitute. Each shot looks the same as the one before and the one after it, but upon closer examination, reveals its particular nuances. Profusely illustrated with 110 four-color and 48 duotone plates, the book includes Clark\'s controversial black and white photographs from the \"Tulsa\" and Teenage Lust\" work, as well as previously unpublished color and black and white images. Measuring approximately 11\" by 9\", the book is bound in paper covered boards in a photographically illustrated dust jacket. Both the book and dust jacket are in FINE condition. The book is boldly signed by Larry Clark on the first free endpaper.

        Adult Comedy Action Drama

New York: Scalo, (1995). Fine in a fine jacket.. First Edition. Quarto. A fine association copy, SIGNED by Prince, dated in the year of publication, and inscribed to his friend Diego Cortez: "To Diego / This is the "bonar / "bonerized" version / Love and XXX&#39;s / Richard Prince / 6/-19-95." One of the best and most comprehensive books about Richard Prince, with all the salient elements of his work included. Prince&#39;s genius here is not so much the representation of the individual pieces themselves, but rather how their juxtaposition in book form creates a commentary not only on himself, but also on the culture he portrays, manipulates, and ultimately shapes. (Roth 274, Open Book 366).
