Black cloth spine, black paper-covered boards, xiii, 205 pages. Very fine in very fine dust jacket. Ranked the 18th greatest English language novel of the 20th century by Modern Library, it is generally recognized as Vonnegut's most influential and popular work. One of Time Magazines 100 best Novels. The author's breakthrough masterpiece. After twenty years of struggling for critical and popular success, this book gave him the audience and recognition he had sought. It was dedicated to the surrealist painter André Masson and its preface was on the theme of a modern mythology. The two main sections of the books describe two places in Paris in great detail: Le Passage de l'Opera and Parc des Buttes-Chaumont. The detailed descriptions provide a realistic backdrop for surrealist spectacles such as the transformation of a shop into a seascape in which a siren appears and then disappears. This literary device is le merveilleux quotidien -- a contrast of te mundane with the marvellous. ---------- About the Photographer ---------- Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908 - 2004) was a French photographer considered to be the father of modern photojournalism. Nigel Tranter
Hodder and Stoughton, London, 1994. Autograph manuscript & typescript of the second Mary Stewart novel, written on index cards as Nigel Tranter took his morning walk. The author has used fifty one stapled, homemade pamphlets each containing five or six index cards, writing in blue or black ink, recto and verso on each card in a miniscule hand, interspersed with occasional memoranda. In his obituary in the Guardian newspaper Tranter's method of composition was described thus: 'Each morning he would leave his house in East Lothian and begin a long walk. In stout boots, flat cap and sensible tweeds, he looked just like any other bird-watcher but for one oddity: in his hands he carried small sheets of paper, protected by a polythene bag in inclement weather. By the time he returned home some 12 miles later, he would have completed another 1,000 words of his next book. Then, with few corrections, the work would be typed up on a venerable Imperial typewriter.' Tranter's typescript of the novel is also present, with his homemade cover sheet, hole-punched, and tied with a bootlace. It takes a leap of imagination to realise that this is the work of a million-selling author. This is the second book in Nigel Tranter's Mary Stewart sequence, a sequel to Price of a Princess, which completes what was intended to be a trilogy. Characteristically the author prefaces his typescript with his own 'Possible blurb for Lord in Waiting'. Please contact Christian White at Modernfirsteditions if you would like more information about this book. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Nigel Tranter
Hodder and Stoughton, London, 1994. Autograph manuscript & typescript of this historical novel about Mary Stewart, sister of James III of Scotland, written by Nigel Tranter on index cards as he took his morning walk. The author has used twenty nine stapled, homemade pamphlets each containing five or six index cards, writing in blue or black ink, recto and verso on each card in a miniscule hand. The text is interspersed with occasional memoranda and even a sketch of 'Ballinshoe Castle', no doubt on one of his morning routes. In his obituary in the Guardian newspaper his method of composition was described thus: 'Each morning he would leave his house in East Lothian and begin a long walk. Then, with few corrections, the work would be typed up on a venerable Imperial typewriter.' Tranter's typescript of the novel is also present with his homemade cover sheet, hole-punched, and tied with a bootlace. It takes a leap of imagination to realise that this is the work of a million-selling author. In the official blurb this novel is described as 'A riveting tale of romance, treachery and heartbreak, set in 15th century Scotland: the story of Mary Stewart, eldest sister of James III of Scotland and her part in making Orkney and Shetland part of Scotland' - characteristical … [Click Below for Full Description]

Carlin, George (creator, screenwriter, starring); Sam Simon
Fox Broadcasting Company / Warner Brothers Television / Sweet, 1994. Archive of original scripts for all 27 episodes of "The George Carlin Show," which ran on Fox for two seasons in 1994 and 1995, with multiple drafts of each episode, totaling 196 scripts. Also included are several key pieces of ephemera relating to the development and writing of the show. Altogether, a thoroughly comprehensive and researchable archive detailing a writing process that attempted to digest and reconstruct the persona of one of the most iconoclastic and influential (not to mention foul mouthed) standup comics for mainstream viewing. From the estate of series co-creator Sam Simon. One of the most important and influential television producers and directors of the last 30 years, Sam Simon is best known, along with Matt Groening and James L. Brooks, as the co-creators of "The Simpsons." Simon won a remarkable nine Emmy Awards, seven for "The Simpsons," and two for "The Tracy Ullman Show," and was nominated another ten times, for his work on both those shows, as well as his contributions to "Cheers," "Taxi," and "The Gary Shandling Show." Created by Simon and George Carlin, "The George Carlin Show" ran for two seasons on Fox from 1994 to 1995. Carlin played New York cabbie George O'Grady, who, when not haranguing fares, spent most of his time at a bar modeled on Carlin's real life Morningside Heights haunt haranguing his fellow patrons, which, characteristically of the post-"Seinfeld" boom in sitcoms created around standup comics, allowed the writers to incorporate elements of Carlin's stage routi … [Click Below for Full Description]

His masterful use of form and color resonate with activism, allowing him to address a variety of social and political issues without any of the harsh preaching found in much of contemporary art. Britto's work embodies the expressionist color patterns of the Fauves, the multi-dimensional facets of Cubism, and the reference to mass culture in Pop Art. This is the first book on Britto and it includes 90 large color reproductions of his paintings and graphics, as well as a profile of his life and career." The Brazilian artist is also known for his sculptures and his 'neo-pop' wall decorations. Foreword by Nan Miller and Aaron Young. Photographs of paintings … [Click Below for Full Description]

Berger, Thomas; (James Jones)
New York: Charles Scribner's. Inscribed on the fly leaf by Berger to fellow author James 'Jim' Jones and his wife Gloria, 'To my friends, Gloria & Jim Jones with admiration and affection' and is dated Paris 13, Oct 65. There is a second, longer note by Berger on the half-title, that reads 'Twenty-nine years ago, the first time I touched this copy of Crazy in Berlin, I was a guest in James Jones's home in Paris, drinking 50-year-old armagnac and smoking a Montecristo Numero Tres, the legendary pre-Castro cigar, both provided by my generous host' signed by him, and dated Grand View-on-Hudson, 13 August 1994. Good copy in a Good, first state dust jacket. 1958, First Edition. Hardcover. Light foxing to endpapers; early fraying to cloth along the edges, and at spine ends; binding does not appear to be cracked, but certainly has some play to it. The DJ rubbed; shallow chipping to spine ends and corners; spine sunned slightly; other light handling and soil; two short closed snags under 1-inch; original price present. Berger's first book, and a fantastic association copy, connecting two of the premier hard-boiled fictioneers of the mid 20th-century. Good / Good. [Attributes: First Edition]

Nigel Tranter
Autograph manuscript & typescript of the second Mary Stewart novel, written on index cards as Nigel Tranter took his morning walk. The author has used fifty one stapled, homemade pamphlets each containing five or six index cards, writing in blue or black ink, recto and verso on each card in a miniscule hand, interspersed with occasional memoranda. In his obituary in the Guardian newspaper Tranter's method of composition was described thus: 'Each morning he would leave his house in East Lothian and begin a long walk...
