A MONOGRAPH OF THE TROCHILIDAE, OR FAMILY OF HUMMING-BIRDS Vol. II

Melbourne: Hill House, 1994. Limited facsimile edition, remians in the publisher's original box. Original grey Japanese Saifu cloth gilt; pp. [iv], plus 75 fine coloured plates with accompanying text. One of series of remarkably exact same-size facsimile of the original in the British Library, printed by offset lithography on acid-free matt art paper and hand-bound. The Hill House series contained the only authentic full-size facsimiles of the works of John Gould - this volume is one of the original printings and now out of print. Binding fine, contents clean and tight, unmarked. A fine copy. Publisher's blurb thus "They are not reproductions, because no camera was used in transferring the images from the B.M.(N.H.) originals. Indeed the originals are taken by Museum security courier to the repro-house in Singapore, where they are subjected to the preparation of new plates for printing on 5 and 6 colour offset presses. The paper used is 130 gsm mat art paper. As facsimiles, the books carry faithfully every spot, mark or stain of the originals. They also carry the original Museum Department of Zoology stamps, and librarian's annotations. From behind glass, the naked eye would be unable to distinguish the original from the facsimile, so accurate is the colour printing. Also as facsimiles, they are exactly the same size as the originals (Imperial Folio: 22" x 15"). Each volume is hand sewn, cased-in and bound between 4 mm. gilt stamped on the spine, and with the gold Crown Cipher of the British Museum (Natural History) on the front, and blind embossed on the inner margin of the front boards. The end-papers are of special wood-free heavy grade paper, printed in a generated repetitive pattern of the Museum's Library stamps. The publisher has not intruded into the authenticity of the books, leaving the publication data printed only on the very last page at the end of the book block. Each copy is hand inspected by the printer's quality control officer, individually numbered on the inside front board. Thus, no two copies are exactly the same. Although initial volumes were printed in more than 500 copies, later production runs have not exceeded 300 for world-wide sale. This has been caused by a relative shortage of quality paper, together with the intensive hand-labour involved in their production." A POSTAL SURCHARGE MAY APPLY ON THIS HEAVY BOOK.. Facsimile Edition. Hard Cover. Fine. Elephant Folio.

Hugo Claus 65. (Met een Verantwoording en een Nadien door Gert Jan Hemmink).

      - Amstelveen, AMO, [1994]. Verguld halfperkament in papieren foedralen (Binderij Phoenix). Drie exemplaren. 34,6 x 24,5 cm. Eenheid in verscheidenheid! AMO 120.Bijgevoegd: Groot blad waarop de drie verschillende etsen van Reinhoud samen werden afgedrukt. Gesigneerd en genummerd '3/3' door de kunstenaar. 59 x 79,5 cm. Ingelijst achter glas. Vlekkerig langs de randen vanwege verkeerd g

Olson, and finally, there is the silly rubber fish that Fedogan & Bremer sent to regular customers (seems appropriate for some batrachian Lovecraft story) – oops, sorry, there is also an advertising poster for Fungi from Yuggoth, a very good example which has been glued onto a cardboard stand-up (looks like it was done by F & B), measures about 11 x 15-1/2 inches, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        PULP

Santa Rosa, CA.: Black Sparrow Press, 1994. First Edition, LIMITED, one of only 750 special hardcover copies numbered and SIGNED by the author. Title-page printed in black and red, photo of the author by Michael Montfort. 8vo, bound in the special hardcover binding of red paper-covered boards pictorially decorated in black, gray, blue and yellow featuring a smoking gun on the upper cover, discharged shells decorate the rear, backed in black cloth with red paper label printed in black on the spine. 202, [3] pp. The copy essentially as new and pristine. FIRST EDITION SIGNED, THE AUTHOR'S LAST COMPLETED NOVEL, PUBLISHED VERY SHORTLY BEFORE HIS DEATH. PULP comments on the obsessions of the pulp fiction genre, making fun of itself as stereotypical of the genre in the grimiest form. PULP also evokes Raymond Chandler, as well as some works by Dashiell Hammett. The novel is also somewhat of a bio-parable. The Red Sparrow is a spoof of the Black Sparrow Press, owned by John Martin, who is parodied in the novel as John Barton.

Hugo Claus 65. (Met een Verantwoording en een Nadien door Gert Jan Hemmink).

Amstelveen, AMO, [1994]. Verguld halfperkament in papieren foedralen (Binderij Phoenix). Drie exemplaren. 34,6 x 24,5 cm. Eenheid in verscheidenheid! AMO 120.Bijgevoegd: Groot blad waarop de drie verschillende etsen van Reinhoud samen werden afgedrukt. Gesigneerd en genummerd '3/3' door de kunstenaar. 59 x 79,5 cm. Ingelijst achter glas.

Autograph letter to the librettist, [Francesco] Piave concerning Jérusalem. Signed "G. Verdi."

. 1994. "Verdi's adaptation of I Lombardi as Jérusalem was his first attempt to conquer the all important stage of the Paris Opéra. This letter gives a vivid impression of his life at the height of his 'anni di galera', when his operas were in such demand that he exhausted himself fulfilling commissions. The wife of the impresario Francesco Lucca had told Verdi that her husband was unable to sleep for the fact that he had not been able to have one of Verdi's operas for his house. Finally Verdi agreed to write Il corsaro for Lucca, an opera with a libretto by Piave, that the composer felt to be something of a potboiler." Sotheby's auction catalogue, December 1, 1994. Jérusalem was first performed at the Opéra on November 26, 1847 and Il Corsaro at the Teatro Grande in Trieste on October 25, 1848.Piave (1810-1876) and Verdi "began a long and successful collaboration from Ernani (1844) to La forza del destino (1862). During these years Piave supplied Verdi with the texts for I due Foscari (1844), Macbeth (1847), Il corsaro (1848), Stiffelio (1850), Rigoletto (1851), La traviata (1853), Simon Boccanegra (1857) and Aroldo (1857)... [He] had a wide vocabulary and a facile pen, and an uncanny ability for turning Verdi's drafts into verse with an economy of words that satisfied Verdi's insistence on brevity and provided him with the striking, illuminating expressions he sought. It was Piave's willingness to meet Verdi's detailed requirements which provided the basis of their work together, and it is on this partnership that his reputation as a librettist must rest." John Black in Grove Music Online.. 3 pp. of a bifolium. Octavo. Dated Paris, September 3, 1847. In black ink. On stationery with a small crest blindstamped to upper right corner. In Italian (with translation). Verdi explains that Jérusalem, a French adaptation of I Lombardi, will be similar to Rossini's adaptation of Mosè in Egitto. His work for the Opéra prevents him from writing a work for Venice, and he confesses that he would rather not write an opera for the publisher Francesco Lucca. Although his health has improved, he is extremely tired. He gives his regards to numerous friends. "I received your dearest letter with great joy and am mortified that I did not answer the one you sent to London. Anyway, I cannot write this Carnevale in Venice: I have a lot to do here for the Opéra. I will certainly not write the Gastone, as you say, but it will be an adaptation of I Lombardi, adding new pieces, and adjusting it here and there as Rossini did with the new Mosè, etc. ... Regarding the libretto, I will try to do my best not to disappoint you, but I cannot promise you anything now because I have no time to think about what I will do.         Autograph letter to the librettist, [Francesco] Piave concerning Jérusalem. Signed "G. Verdi."

Jérusalem was first performed at the Opéra on November 26, 1847 and Il Corsaro at the Teatro Grande in Trieste on October 25, 1848. Piave (1810-1876) and Verdi "began a long and successful collaboration from Ernani (1844) to La forza del destino (1862). I would do anything to get rid of Lucca's opera... Oh, if only I could not work!! Do you understand this fine word? ... Not to work..."
