Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space.

New York: Random House, 1994. First edition of what many consider Sagan's finest work. Quarto, original cloth. Signed by Carl Sagan on the half-title page. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Jacket design by David Hardy. Future generations will look back on our epoch as the time when the human race finally broke into a radically new frontier--space. In Pale Blue Dot Sagan traces the spellbinding history of our launch into the cosmos and assesses the future that looms before us as we move out into our own solar system and on to distant galaxies beyond. The exploration and eventual settlement of other worlds is neither a fantasy nor luxury, insists Sagan, but rather a necessary condition for the survival of the human race. "Fascinating...memorable....revealing... perhaps the best of Carl Sagan's Books" (The Washington Post Book World).

Quartos, first edition, pp. xxxviii, 565; Volume 2 is unpaginated plate book, baby-blue cloth boards with white stamped lettering on spines and fronts, slipcase, halftone and color photos. "By making material not readily accessible available in this detailed and carefully structured form, Carr has performed a considerable service to scholars interested not only in Church but in many aspects of nineteenth-century American landscape painting." -- Gilian Wohlauer, New England Quarterly This is a large project: a comprehensive scholarly catalogue of Church's works of art still at Olana State Historical Site, his former home in upstate New York. Divided into 16 chronological sections, it covers 736 drawings, paintings and prints, spanning nearly 60 years of his life. The items, each of them illustrated in the catalogue, range from doodles in his schoolboy textbooks and exercise books, to student works done under Thomas Cole, to important studio paintings exhibited during Church's lifetime, and pencil sketches and finished paintings executed in Mexico as late as two years before his death in April 1900. The holdings are mostly concentrated at the beginning of Church's career, between 1844 and 1850, and toward the end, between 1880 and 1898, but all phases of his travels and his art are represented, including preparations for his major studio paintings.         Exploration of the soul

[London : the artist], 1994. Quarto, lettered flush-cut boards, pp [40], two original photographs of Tracey Emin and her brother Paul as children, original lithograph of a bird perched on a penis, inscribed by the artist on the front free endpaper 'I wanted this to be the truth Tracey Emin 1994' and editioned out of 200 copies, housed in a calico cloth bag with hand-stitched initials 'T.E.' to front panel. An artist's book by the Young British Artist made in the mid-nineties, at the point of her spectacular emergence as a major artist on the world stage. In typical Emin style, Exploration of the soul is a self-revelation dealing with childhood, family, sexuality and human relationships. Her experiences are laid bare and authenticated through direct expression. The variety of media employed (printmaking, text, photography, and particularly hand-stitching) is distinctively Emin and, as with most of her work, Exploration of the soul interweaves ideas such as home, gender and banality with the theme of the pervasive and fundamental power of the desire for sex.

English text; Title and captions in English and Chinese; Hardcover (cloth); limited edition of 1000 copies, 2 volumes, 688 pages, 957 color illustrations, cloth.; 27 x 37; 6.451 Kg; Lacking the slipcase. Both volumes show signs of wear on the exterior, namely some wear marks on the spines, front and back cover. The outside text block shows also signs of wear. The interior is in very good condition. CURRENTLY OUT OF PRINT.; “"The first volume of this catalogue contains mainly earthenwares and stonewares from the Neolithic period to the Song dynasty (AD 960-1279), the second porcelains from the Yuan (AD1279-1368) to the Qing dynasty. Although the two volumes belong together, they are conceived as individual books, each with its own working bibliography. Volume One contains small maps of China, highlighting the most important, if not the only, regions of ceramic manufacture in different periods; these were not necessary in Volume Two, where most pieces come from kiln centre, Jingdezhen in Jiangxi province. In Volume One attributions to the places of manufacture are given as precisely as possible, distinctions being made between a definitely identified kiln, a province, and a more general area of manufacture. The reference illustrations in Volume One show objects in other materials, also from the Meiyintang collection. In Volume Two all reign marks not illustrated in colour are included in an appendix; only those distinct enough for clear reproduction are repeated under the catalogue entry itself."“ excerpt from the introduction by Regina Krahl..

Privately Issued, [Los Angeles] 1994 - [virtually flawless condition, with just the tiniest bit of edgewear]. 64-page booklet commemorating a banquet held on September 1, 1994, in honor of 29 "pioneers of animation" (many, but not all, of whom were animators), the majority of whom were in attendance -- except for four who had passed away earlier in the year, while the event was still being planned. The 26 signatures present in the program were collected by the publisher on labels, which have been carefully affixed to the appropriate pages, each beneath a photograph of the individual and opposite a one-page summary of his career and achievements in the animation field. ("His," yes: they're all men.) Contained in the book are the signatures (on labels) of the following: Bob Allen, Ed Benedict, Dick Bickenbach, Preston Blair, Shamus Culhane, Marc Davis, Ron Dias, Eyvind Earle, Bob Givens, Bill Hurtz, Ollie Johnston, Paul Julian, Ward Kimball, Walter Lantz (who died in March 1994, but whose signature here is dated 1982, although I can't vouch for its source or its authenticity), Bill Melendez, Maurice Noble, Ken O'Connor, Bill Peet, Virgil Ross, Irv Spence, Frank Thomas, Richard Thomas, Myron Waldman, Clair Weeks, Lou Zukor, and Morey Zukor. The only person who seems to have missed his label-signing assignment was Joe Grant, and two of those (Izzy Ellis and Jack Hannah) who died before the event are represented by photographs of their signatures and handprints in cement at the "Animation Walk of Fame." Anyone who knows anything about animation will recognize most of these names -- which include four of Disney's renowned "Nine Old Men" (all the survivors of that group at that time) -- and will appreciate the significance and uniqueness of this gathering of signatures. All of these gentlemen have now passed from the scene, I believe; I haven't checked every last one individually, but the youngest man in the room at the time (at least 20 years younger than almost everybody else), Ron Dias, passed away in 2013. Also included, as a laid-in (unattached) center-spread insert, printed on heavy stock but folded vertically down the middle, is a color group photo of 23 individuals, 21 of whom are among the group of honorees; facsimiles of their signatures are printed on the photo, but not matched up with their images in any way, and since you can't read their name-tags in the photo, you're on your own as far as connecting the dots is concerned. (The two other people in the photo are women -- one of whom is almost completely hidden -- who are either (a) wives or (b) unannounced honorees.) The group photo, unfolded, measures 10-1/2" x 8-1/2".       (VISIONAIRE). Gan, Stephen, James Kaliardos & Cecilia Dean, Editors. VISIONAIRE NO. 12: DESIRE (FALL 1994) - DISPLAY COPY. New York: Visionaire Publishing, 1994. First Edition 1/2000. 4to. Loose Plates in a Portfolio. Fashion Quarterly. Very Good/No Jacket - As Issued. Individual illustrated sheets laid into a debossed silk-over-boards portfolio, profusely illustrated. Designed by Gregory Foley. Published in an edition of two thousand copies, this is the twelfth installment of everyone's favorite long-running luxe fashion quarterly, Visionaire. "This was our collaboration with Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS, and an opportunity to support a cause very close to Visionaire. Anneliese Estrada, DIFFA's creative director and our friend, came to us to raise awareness and money through art. The art dealer Paul Morris helped us gather all the original artwork printed in the issue, which was then exhibited at Charles Cowles Gallery and auctioned, with all of the proceeds benefiting DIFFA's charitable programs. The issue came in a red-satin case with bone latches, modeled after Chinese brocade jewelry boxes. These were made by hand in China, and the work took forever. The fabric refused to adhere to the boards due to, the factory wrote us, ''the humidity caused by the monsoon.'' Each edition opens with an actual print of a three-dimensional photograph of Shalom Harlow shot by Stephane Sednaoui. Sixty more artists contributed their own sexy and suggestive imagery". The stellar contributors to this issue include editor Stephen Gan, Bill Cunningham, Steven Meisel, Bruce Weber, Ruben Toledo, Francois Berthoud, Mats Gustafson, Mario Testino, Steven Klein, David Seidner, Todd Oldham, Enrique Badulescu, Ruven Afanador, Martin Margiela, Pamela Hanson, Peter Robotham, Barbara Kruger, Nobuyoshi Araki, Nan Goldin, Ross Bleckner, David Armstrong, Jack Pierson, Steven Klein, Karen Kilimnik, Jim Hodges, Zoe Leonard, Kay Rosen, Lisa Yuskavage, Bill Jacobson, Mark Morrisroe, Bjork, and many, many more. A most handsome unnumbered hors commerce example of this uncommon issue stamped "Display Copy" by the publisher on the inside front board. It has been priced accordingly. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase.       London: Secker & Warburg, 1994., 1994. First edition. First edition, first printing. White cloth, purple endpapers, 8vo. Fine, unread copy in fine dust jacket. A novel set during WWII on the Greek island of Cephallonia, which is occupied both by German and Italian forces. The Greeks, Germans, and Italians, all seem to co-exist rather well given the circumstances, but after a time the desire for power and control causes a terrible hardship for the islanders. Provocative and yet a sensitively written story that we feel many of you will enjoy for its sense of place, the characters involved, and the story itself. Winner of the Commonwealth Writer's Prize and the basis for the 2001 movie that starred Nicholas Cage, Penelope Cruz, and John Hurt.
