        The Bread of Days

Yolla Bolly Press 1994 - A Fine - oversize book approximately 14 by 10 inches – in a Near Fine slipcase with slight rubbing, touch of edge wear and several light spots on one side. This limited edition book (11 of 81 numbered copies) contains twelve poems, a collection of classical Mexican poetry spanning five centuries by eleven of Mexico's greatest poets, with an introduction by Weinberger, commentary and notes on each poem by Nobel Laureate Paz, and a discussion between Weinberg and Paz concerning Beckett’s (also a Nobel Laureate) translation of the poems. The book includes multicolor etchings created especially for this edition by Enrique Chagoya who is becoming one of the most highly regarded Mexican-American artists of his generation. The twelve full-page plates were produced by the master printer, Jesus Romero under the supervision of the artist; each signed in pencil by Chagoya. Book is signed on a limitation page by Paz, Weinberger, and Chagoya. The text is printed entirely in letterpress on handmade paper. Publisher's printed paper over special split boards, that have been hand sewn and slipcased. The binding structure was designed by Julie Chen; Renee Menge bound the book by hand.         End Grain, Contemporary Wood Engraving in North America (No. IV of L of Deluxe Edition)

[Mission, British Columbia]: Barbarian Press, 1994. 1st and Limited Edition. Leather. Fine. 4to - over 9" - 12" tall. 327 p. Signed by Artist and Bookmakers. Limited edition of 430 copies of which 300 are for sale; this no. IV of L specially bound in full leather, with a specially cut tipped-in frontispiece by Rosemary Kilbourn and signed by her, contained in a drop-back box, with a slip laid-in "Concerning Commissions". ***ABOUT THE BOOK: "More manual skills are required for wood engraving than for coronary bypass surgery" (quote from the book by Alexander Husveti, M.D., in correspondence with the publishers). Why do woodcuts and wood engravings continue to enchant us, even in this digital age? There are likely many reasons, but the fact that they do is evident. This lovely volume presented to us by the Barbarian Press took nine years to produce, from initial idea to publication; includes blocks printed by the Elsteds from the wood, not from reproduction; includes only engravings (cut on the end grain), not wood cuts (cut on the side or plank grain); includes only artists living at the time; and includes blocks chosen from their work by the engravers themselves. A fascinating look at the magic of wood engraving in Canada and the United States in the 1980s and 1990s, and includes such artists as Leonard Baskin, John DePol, Dellas Henke, Barry Moser, and Gaylord Schanilec, among many others. ***DESCRIPTION: Bound in full dark blue morocco, false raised bands, lettering stamped in gold across spine, blind-stamped with title page engraving on upper cover, fore-edges uncut, patterned endpapers, tipped-in frontispiece (No. IV of L) as referred to above, title page in dark blue and black with vignetter of an engraving tool overlaid on the words "End Grain" with calligraphic flourishes above and below, text handset in Eric Gill's Joanna and Joanna Italic, the paper is Zerkall mouldmade, Quarto size (approximately 11.5" tall), 326 pages plus colophon, signed by Crispin and Jan Elsted on page preceding colophon with their printers' marks, Errata sheet ("Faults Escaped") tipped in at the rear, including a note that End Grain was actually published in 1995. Laid into the book is a small single sheet entitled "Concerning Commissions" with instructions for those desiring to commission work from the represented artists. Encased in a drop-back box in quarter dark blue morocco and patterned paper (matching the book's endpapers), lined in light blue Gainsborough, stamped in gold across spine. ***CONDITION: Fine, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, perfectly straight corners with no rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings. The drop-back box is also fine. ***CITATION: Hoi Barbaroi A19. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         Might. Issues #1 and #7-16

(San Francisco): (Gigantic Publishing). (1994-1997). Eleven of the first 16 issues of Dave Eggers' first foray into periodicals. Sold as a set, after the fact, in the Brooklyn Store, with an included serious/humorous fact sheet entitled "Rules for Buyers of These Old Magazines" and a set of latex gloves for handling. Among other things, the buyer of a set was instructed to write a check to The Fresh Air Fund, a New York charity that brings low-income urban children to outdoor experiences in the country. This seems to have been the first McSweeney's effort to have its literary publishing venture also serve an activist, socially conscious purpose; later the 826 Valencia and 826NYC literacy efforts extended and amplified this impulse. Issues of Might are quite uncommon now, and runs of the magazine are extremely scarce. The Might magazines, the rules and the gloves are fine, in a large and worn ziplock bag. First Edition. No Binding. Fine.

        Pale Fire

San Francisco: The Arion Press, 1994. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. 4to - over 9" - 12" tall. 287 p. No. 195 of 200 (plus 26 HC). Vladimir Nabokov (1899-1977), perhaps best known for Lolita, was a finalist for the National Book Award for Fiction seven times. This work, Pale Fire, is presented as a 999-line poem written by a fictional poet; accompanied by a foreword and lengthy commentary by a fictional author, the two together form the novel. Not surprisingly, its critical reception was diverse; however, the work is included in several lists of "most important books" including Time Magazine's list of the 100 best English-language novels published since 1923. The Arion Press imaginatively solved the work's biggest challenge, establishing for the first time the lineation of the poem with a small companion volume which conforms to the set of index cards described as its manuscript in the novel. (N.B., above info from Wiki and Arion Press web site.) ***DESCRIPTION: Both volumes are bound in full purple changeable silk cloth, with inset gold cloth disks for gold titling; published in a limited edition of only 200 copies (plus 26 HC), both volumes being no. 195. The main volume with its fore-edge uncut, frontispiece a portrait of the author by Andrew Hoyem (1994); type Fridericus, on Somerset mould-made paper, quarto size (approximately 10.75" tall), pagination: (1)-284, author's bio (285), blank (286), colophon (287). The smaller companion volume is on lined paper which simulates index cards, using the same type and paper as the main volume; oblong (4" tall by 6" wide), pagination: (i-ii), 1-80, colophon (81). The slipcase is covered in gold cloth and has a stepped compartment to accommodate both volumes. ***CONDITION: Both volumes are fine, the binding perfect and without blemish, with strong, square text blocks, solid hinges, perfectly straight corners with no rubbing, the interiors are clean and bright, and they both are entirely free of prior owner markings; clean, crisp and as new. The slipcase is also fine, strong and sturdy. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         BERND & HILLA BECHER: FABRIKHALLEN (FACTORY BUILDINGS AND INDUSTRIAL FACADES) - Rare Pristine Copy of The First Hardcover Edition/First Printing: Signed by Bernd Becher And Hilla Becher

Munich, Germany: Schirmer/Mosel, 1994 - 1st Printing. Signed. 276 pages. Published in 1994. Collection of landscape-cum-place photographs. One of the most important photography books by Bernd and Hilla Becher. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the Softcover Edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Bernd and Hilla Becher: Oversize-volume format. Black cloth boards with pale gray titles embossed on spine, as issued. Photographs by Bernd and Hilla Becher. Brief Introduction by Klaus Bussmann. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Munich, Germany to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Bernd and Hilla Becher's "Fabrikhallen". Factory Buildings and Industrial Facades, photographed in the most rigorous, taxonomic, and severely beautiful manner. "Vastly influenced the international photography world within the past few decades. Their unique genre of photography is somewhere between topological documentation and art, lining up with the aesthetics of the Neue Sachlichkeit Movement of the 1920's of Karl Blossfeldt, August Sander, and Albert Renger-Patzsch" (Publisher's blurb). As the founders of the "Becher School" (AKA "Dusseldorf School"), they have, in turn, influenced several generations of documentary photographers and artists who have themselves become international superstars: Andreas Gursky, Thomas Ruff, Thomas Struth, Candida Hofer, Axel Hutte, Elger Esser, and even the Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky. "They shot only on overcast days so as to avoid shadows, and early in the morning during the seasons of Spring and Fall. Objects included barns, water towers, coal tipples, cooling towers, grain elevators, coal bunkers, coke ovens, oil refineries, blast furnaces, gas tanks, storage silos, and warehouses. At each site, the Bechers created landscape views of the entire plant, which set the structures in their context and showed how they relate to one another. They excluded any details that would detract from the central theme and instead set up comparisons of viewpoint and lighting through which the eye is led to the basic structural pattern, which is allied to the philosophy and practice of the New Topographics Movement" (Philip Gefter). The Bechers did not invent the grid (Mondrian did), but it is the origin and basis of their aesthetic and practice. The grid remains the most advanced iconography of Modernism. It is THE aesthetic, finally, of purity, of emotional self-regulation, the postponement of instant gratification in exchange for lasting aesthetic reward. Surely, no one (or duo) has pursued this single-minded aesthetic to its logical conclusion in photography as single-mindedly as the Bechers did. An absolute "must-have" title for Bernd and Hilla Becher collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in pencil on the front free endpaper by Bernd and Hilla Becher. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a great art photography book. This is one of very few such double-signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online command as much as $600 even though they have serious flaws ("Near Fine", "Very Good"). A rare signed copy thus. 264 plates. Winners of the Erasmus Prize, the most prestigious European artistic prize, in 2002. Winners of the Hasselblad Award, the most prestigious photography award, in 2004. Two of the most important and influential photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER BERND AND HILLA BECHER TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 3888147301. The authors themselves describe this map as: The Siege of Sarajevo 1992 - 1996: mapping out different levels of survival within the urban environment. First project of its kind visually and textually explaining and presenting 'what it means to be besieged' within a single format. The map was published by FAMA, the first independent media company in Yugoslavia in the time of its brake-up in 1991 and war years in 1990s. Founded in 1990, FAMA was planned to become CNN of the South-East Europe and mostly covered the siege of Sarajevo in the next years. The author of the map is the director of FAMA Suada Kapi?, born in 1952 in Sarajevo. During the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina Kapi? remained in the besieged Sarajevo, observing the cruelty of war as a study of human nature. During the war she launched projects of the Sarajevo Survival Map 92-96 and Sarajevo Survival Guide, of which drafts she smuggled through the secret underground tunnel in order to present them internationally. The map was published one year after the end of the war. Today this map is considered as one of the most powerful maps of 20th century.
