Games with Incomplete Information Played By "Bayesian" Players, Part I-III [all published].Berkeley: University of California, 1968. Offprints / first seperate editions.

A fine set of the three path-breaking papers for which Harsanyi was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1994 together with John Nash and Reinhard Selten. "John Harsanyi's three-part essay 'Games with Incomplete Information Played by Bayesian Players' should be read today with a view to its place in the history of economic thought. It is one of the great papers that gave birth to modern information economics. Other outstanding papers in this group include William Vickrey's (1961) paper on auctions, George Akerlof's (1970) "Market for Lemons," Michael Spence's (1973) "Job Market Signaling," and Michael Rothschild and Joseph Stiglitz's (1976) paper on insurance markets. But Harsanyi's contribution holds a unique place in this group of Nobel prize-winners. Each of the other papers analyzed one specific example of a market where people have different information. Harsanyi alone addressed the problem of how to define a general analytical framework for studying all competitive situations where people have different information. The unity and scope of modern information economics was found in Harsanyi's framework." (Roger B. Myerson: Management Science, vol. 50, pp. 1818-1824, 2004). "Prior to Harsanyi's path breaking three-part article, 'Games with Incomplete Information Played by Bayesian Players' (1967-1968), little progress had been made in analyzing games of incomplete information. Harsanyi's conceptual breakthrough was to recognize that it is possible to embed a game of incomplete information into a larger game of complete information and use it to determine equilibrium behavior in the original game." (DSB: XXI, p.250). These three papers were originally published in November 1967; January 1968; March 1968, respectfully, in the journal Management Science. However, we can locate no direct offprints issued by the journal, and these three seperate printings from 1968, issued by the University of California (were Harsanyi at that time was employed), were most probably planed at an early stage (all three parts are announced in the title of the first paper) and direct journal offprints would have been redundant.. Three offprints. 8vo: 242 x 161 mm. Original printed wrappers; Part III a little sunned, otherwise very fine and clean. WorldCat lists no copies of of any parts of these seperate printings

Cerny trojúhelník - Podkrusnohorì Fotografie: 1990-1994 (The Black Triangle - The Foothills of the Ore Mountains. Le triangle noir - La région située au pied des Monts métallifères)

Sprava Prazskeho Prague: Správa Prazského, (1994). Softcover. vg. Oblong 4to. Unpaginated (Total of 76 leaves). Original cut-out card cover protected by mylar jacket. Accordion fold-out pages attached to cover. Lacking slipcase. The Black Triangle in the Ore Mountains is located on the triangular border area between Germany's Southern Saxony, Poland's Lower Silesia and the Czech Republic's Northern Bohemia. Industrial activities have generated the emission of high levels of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide, contaminating the air over the basin which led to the deterioration of the ecological balance, as well as causing numerous human health problems. Koudelka's photographs in this work "show a devastated countryside, a war zone of blasted trees and vegetation, a landscape as atrophied and as wrecked as anything in a Paul Nash painting of the Somme. Pulling out the accordion fold, one is faced with an enormous panorama of destruction. The gouged earth and felled trees make a powerful impression, and here and there in the images trails of smoke rising up on the horizon tell us that the power stations are still wreaking their environmental havoc. One might argue that Koudelka is making beautiful pictures out of misery, and there is no denying that these are rich, darktoned and sumptuous photographs, or that this is an exquisitely made book. Koudelka is an unashamedly romantic artist, and has admitted that the region has a horrible beauty. Nevertheless, this volume is a passionate plea for the environmental cause." (Parr/Badger; The Photobook: A History, Vol. II, p. 74-75). Total of 34 captioned b/w reproductions of photographs in panorama, each measuring 7" x 22". Text by Vàclev Havel and Josef Vavrousek, captions by Zdenek Stàhlik, Petr Pakosta and Igor Michal. Minor staining on wraps. Text and captions in Czech, English and French. Wraps in very good, interior in near fine condition. Scarce.

[St. Petersburg: Izd-vo. M.K., 1994].. Narrow quarto (29 x 15.2cm). Forest-green paper over boards, printed paper label. Printed on one side only of accordion fold-out text block. Fine in board slipcase. First edition in this format, with color lithographed double-page title, and four full-page color plates, by Karasik. One of a total edition of forty-seven numbered copies, signed by the printer/illustrator, and with each of the lithographs initialed in pencil in the lower margin. An innovative presentation of Brodsky's text, conceived and executed by one of the central figures in the revival of the artist's book in post-Soviet Russia. "Mikhail Karasik’s crede [sic] is 'a book made by an artist,' he has been working on it since 1987 when he made his first lithographic book 'Christmas,' inspired by a poem by Pasternak. Karasik is the pioneer of the book made by an artist in Russia: he has published over 40 litho-books of this caliber in small editions. Moreover, he has been working hard as curator, organizer of exhibitions and festivals devoted to the book made by an artist in Russia and outside. Karasik draws upon the tradition of the Russian futurist books of the 1910- 20s, the illustrated editions by K. Malevich, M. Larionov, N. Goncharova, O. Rozanov, P. Filonov. While these futurist slipshod bulky-section-books, which were deliberately anti-aesthetic, were meant to show off, Karasik’s books, on the contrary, are exquisitely aesthetic. The artist carefully chooses all elements of decoration, he experiments with paper trying craft- and laid-paper, signs and vellum, patterns and cardboard. The elaborateness of form is of conceptual importance, for the book is a full- dress metaphor of its content" - RUSSKIALBUM.

        Livers des Artistes

Fairfax, CA: Jungle Garden Press, 1994. Quarto. (18)ff. One of only three copies, signed by the illustrator, Carl Dern, and the printer, Marie Dern. A portfolio of eight pieces of original art by Carl Dern, mixing printing, watercolors, pen drawings, and collage. Playing with the concept of the livre d'artiste, or artist's book, the tongue-in-cheek illustrations interpret the work of eight famous modern artists, incorporating a representation of a human liver into the artists' works. For Georgia O'Keefe, the liver wears a pair of antlers and floats in the sky over a desert landscape, and in an interpratation of Georges Seurat, the liver becomes the exaggerated bustle of a women with a parasol. For Kurt Schwitters, the liver is decorated with a collage of found objects. Also included are parodies of Joan Miró, René Magritte, Eva Hesse, Frida Kahlo, and Joseph Beuys. Each illustration is preceded by a page bearing the name of the artist, letterpress printed by Marie Dern. A copy of this book was featured in the 2002 exhibition "Revealing the Mysteries: The Development of the Artist's Book in the Bay Area," at the San Francisco Center for the Book. The loose sheets are housed in a purple clamshell box designed by Dominic Riley. In a Dadaist touch, a textured, liver-shaped piece of metal is laid in, and attached to the box on a piece of string is a small plastic figurine of a baby. Slightest rubbing to the corners of the box, else fine.

With clean, bold, and colorful imagery, this young artist subtly delivers strong, poignant messages in a refreshing and upbeat manner. His masterful use of form and color resonate with activism, allowing him to address a variety of social and political issues without any of the harsh preaching found in much of contemporary art.
