William Gibson's Handmade Working Copy of the Shooting Script for Johnny Mnemonic with Related Materials

Np: XXXIII Limited Partnership, 1994. 4to, loose leaves housed in an altered three ring binder bound in rigid circuit boards, with additional material laid. Signed on the title page by Gibson. & & Artists' book created by William Gibson during the shooting of the Robert Longo film Johnny Mnemonic, which had been based on Gibson's excellent short story of the same name. The binder is strikingly bound in circuit boards, with additional elements pasted on, including photographs, holograph notes on duct tape, and a postcard. Inserted in the back is correspondence, call sheets, original computer printouts of script revisions, some annotated, and a large poster print of a pre-production drawing from the film. & & The near past of the nineties never seemed so far from us now. Originally conceived of as being a low budget art film - in an interview which predated the film's US release in Wired, Longo said that it "started out as an arty 1½-million-dollar movie, and it became a 30-million-dollar movie because we couldn't get a million and a half." Bankrolled by Sony, the film was hacked apart and roughly edited into a different film as that company underestimated the public. According to a 1998 interview with Gibson in The Peak, "Basically what happened was it was taken away and re-cut by the American distributor in the last month of its pre-release life, and it went from being a very funny, very alternative piece of work to being something that had been very unsuccessfully chopped and cut into something more mainstream." The intersection of Cyberpunk and mainstream entertainment became a critical flop. An invaluable and unique record of the meeting point of cyberpunk with mainstream culture.

        Essays on Economics and Economists

Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1994. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the Nobel Prize-winning economist Coase on the title page. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. This is a series of 15 essays written by the 1991 Nobel laureate in economics. Unlike most such collections, the essays are not primarily about Coase's work. The first half of the book contains essays on methodology: what economists do and how they do it. Coase's explanations are thought-provoking. As Coase demonstrates, economics in its theoretical and empirical work is more normative than most economists would prefer to believe. Simple principles are often ignored, replaced by complex ones beyond the ken of economics. The remaining essays are biographical sketches that focus primarily on famous English economists such as Adam Smith and Alfred Marshall. These essays provide insight into the roots of modern economics.

Passages from the Life of a Philosopher.London: Longman, Green, Longman, Roberts & Green, 1864. First edition.

A superb copy, untouched in the original cloth, of "Babbage's final book, and the principal source, along with the posthumous <i>Babbage's Calculating Engines</i>, of our knowledge of Babbage's Difference and Analytical Engines. Chapters V-VII contain Babbage's accounts of his Difference Engines nos. 1 and 2, along with Sir Nicholas Harris Nicolas's statement on the Difference Engine drawn up from Babbage's papers. Chapter VIII contains Babbage's only published description of the design of his Analytical Engine, a universal calculator capable of any type of mathematical calculation, which embodied "all the important functions of the modern digital computer" (Campbell-Kelly, 1994, p. 23). The frontispiece shows the only portion of Babbage's first Difference Engine to be constructed, and the final four pages contain Babbage's own bibliography of his published works" (OOC).<br/><br/> &#10087;Origins of Cyberspace 84; <i>From Gutenberg to the Internet6.2<br/><br/> "<i>Passages</i> is a rambling, colourful, anecdotal account of Babbage's life and work. It is unusual by the conventions of autobiography in that it contains little introspection and few details of its author's personal life. Babbage's wife, Georgiana, is not mentioned and Babbage refers once and only obliquely to the blackest single year of his life, 1827, during which four members of his immediate family died. The chapter on the 'abominable nuisance' of street musicians is often cited in evidence of Babbage's reputation for eccentricity. He despaired at repeated interruption of his work by street disturbance and campaigned tirelessly for legal reforms, attracting, on occasions, public ridicule. His autopsy report, which came to light in 1983, raises the intriguing possibility that Babbage's acute sensitivity to noise was due to a medical condition involving cochlear degeneration caused by arterial disease. <i>Passages</i> remains a rewarding and entertaining volume, rich in mischief, self-parody, and false modesty" (ODNB). <br/><br/> "Too fragmentary properly to be called an autobiography, it is difficult to think of memoirs of another man of science which make such entertaining reading" (Hyman, p. 248). <br/><br/> John Murray was planning to publish the <i>Passages</i>, until his objection to a slightly off-colour anecdote in the book caused him to pull out at the last minute. The book was issued, with the anecdote, by the Longman publishing house. The frontispiece wood-engraving of Babbage's Difference Engine was drawn by Babbage's son Benjamin Herschel; the caption notes that the engraving was first printed in June 1853. <br/><br/> A. Hyman, <i>Charles Babbage, Pioneer of the Computer</i>, 1982; A. W. Van Sinderen, 'The printed papers of Charles Babbage,' <i>Annals of the History of Computing</i>, Vol. 2, 1980, pp. 169-85, no. 77; <i>From Gutenberg to the Internet</i> 6.2; <i>Origins of Cyberspace</i> 84.. 8vo (225 x 140 mm), pp. xii, 496, [24, publisher's catalogue dated June 1864], with frontispiece of 'Mr. Babbage's Difference Engine.' Publisher's green cloth gilt, uncut. Some light spotting to frontispiece and title (which is usually very heavy with this book). A fine copy in it's original state

Manana en la batalla piensa en mi

Barcelona: Editorial Anagrama, 1994. First edition. Octavo, original illustrated wrappers as issued. Signed by Marias on the title page. In very good condition. First editions of this work, later translated into English as "Tomorrow In the Battle Think On Me" are rare. Marías writes the kind of old-fashioned speculative prose we associate with Proust and Henry James. . . . But he also deals in violence, historical and personal, and in the movie titles, politicians, and brand-names and underwear we connect with quite a different kind of writer" (The London Review of Books).

        Snow Falling on Cedars

Harcourt Brace, 1994. 1st. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Signed by Author. Fine US First in Fine dw. Signed on title page "To Hillary with best wishes, David Guterman". First printing, First edition - A B C D E True first. Winner of Pen/Faulkner award. San Piedro Island in Puget Sound is a place so isolated that no one who lives there can afford to make enemies. But in 1954 a local fisherman is found suspiciously drowned, and a Japanese-American named Kabuo Miyamoto is charged with his murder. In the course of the ensuing trial, it becomes clear that what is at stake is more than one man&#39;s guilt. For on San Piedro, memory grows as thickly as cedar trees and the fields of ripe strawberries--memories of a charmed love affair between a white boy and a Japanese girl who grew up to become Kabuo&#39;s wife; memories of land desired, paid for, and lost. Above all, San Piedro is haunted by the memory of what happened to its Japanese residents during World War II, when an entire community was sent into exile while its neighbors watched. Gripping, tragic, and densely atmospheric, SNOW FALLING ON CEDARS is a masterpiece of suspense but one that leaves us shaken and changed.

Thurber&#39;s Dogs. Suite for Orchestra after Drawings by James Thurber. Movement VI: Hunting Hounds. Autograph musical manuscript sketches in condensed score of almost the entire final movement of the work, consisting of music for sections B-N, i.e., pp. 111-137 of the published full score

Folio, ca. 356 x 278 mm. Unbound. 9 leaves notated in pencil on one side of each leaf of 18-stave AZTEC C-18 music manuscript paper. A working manuscript, with erasures, alterations and cancellations. & & Together with: A copy of the published full score of the movement, i.e., pp. 107-138, and a 1-1/2 page printed commentary by the composer discussing the background of the work and briefly describing the music: & & "I should say, however, that as I was working on the last movement, I found myself thinking as much about the fox as about the hunting hounds. This, coupled with the fact that I recently acquired a recording of background music from the old movie serials that I used to go to as a kid, probably accounts for the quite ungentlemanly, almost lurid quality of the chase music." . "Thurber&#39;s Dogs was commissioned for the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra of Columbus and the Thurber House to commemorate the 100th birthday anniversary of author James Thurber. It was completed on August 13, 1994. The first performances took place on December 2 and 4, 1994; the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra of Columbus was conducted, respectively, by the composer and Timothy Russell, the orchestra&#39;s Music Director. The work has been recorded by the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra of Columbus for release in the fall of 1995." From Mr. Schickele&#39;s commentary accompanying the manuscript& & A composition student of Roy Harris, Darius Milhaud, Persichetti and Bergsma, "Schickele has become the leading American musical satirist, giving concerts throughout the USA in which he lectures, sings, conducts and plays as guest soloist with symphony orchestras or with his own ensemble. The humorous compositions range from outrageous parodies, such as the cantata Iphigenia in Brooklyn, to ingenious combinations of antithetical styles, as in Blaues Gras (Bluegrass Cantata), and are full of surprising violations of familiar styles, musical forms and phrase structures, harmonic conventions and orchestration. Schickele&#146;s commentaries and his mock-scholarly The Definitive Biography of P.D.Q. Bach (1807&#150;1742)? (New York, 1976) juxtapose incongruities from contemporary culture with relatively austere academic and classical canons, and are reflective of the eclectic musical menu of the modern American public. One of the most widely performed and published of contemporary composers working in many different styles...". Deane L. Root in Grove online& & Thurber (1894-1961), one of the foremost American humorists of the 20th century, had a great love of dogs and included them in many of his drawings, calling them "sound creatures in a crazy world." www.thurberhouse.org
