Sight and Touch

(New York): Limited Editions Club, (1994). Folio. 12ff. One of 300 numbered copies signed by the author and Balthus, the illustrator. Text in Spanish, French, and English. Designed by Dan Carr and printed at the Wild Carrot Press in Hadley, Mass., this trilingual edition of Octavio Paz's poem is illustrated with three full-page color woodcuts designed by Balthus, to whom the poem was dedicated. Balthus's paintings, from which the illustrations were cut into wood by Keiji Shinohara of Malden, Mass., measure nearly two feet in length and depict a rural landscape, a female nude, and a still life of vegetables. The poem was originally published in Spanish and English translation by New Directions in 1987 and, as Paz states, is about light, which "is time thinking about itself." The text for this edition was set by Julia Ferrari and Dan Carr at the Golgonooza Letter Foundry in Ashuelot, New Hampshire and printed on handmade Kozo Uwazen paper. Bound in linen boards with a goatskin spine, and housed in a tan cloth-covered clamshell box with a leather label to the front cover. LEC newsletter laid in. A fine New England production by a celebrated poet.

Boston, MA: Little, Brown & Company, 1994. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. Boston, MA: Little, Brown & Company, 1994. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 196 pages. The author's debut collection of short stories and essays. Now considered a contemporary classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now very scarce. Published to enormous critical acclaim, it made David Sedaris an overnight cult figure and the book is now rare as a First Edition. He did not achieve breakthrough mainstream status until his fourth collection, "Me Talk Pretty One Day", but with this collection, he earned the grateful admiration of some of the most erudite readers of "humor", a genre that includes such canonical figures as James Thurber and Woody Allen, and yet remains something of a sub-genre for many readers (and collectors) , who consider it "light entertainment". There is a light touch in Sedaris' acerbic, "spot-on", and "laugh-out-loud" pieces about America, but they say so much more about the real America as seen by Sedaris through his completely dysfunctional Greek-immigrant family as well as through his singular perspective as the funniest gay man in America (some would say the funniest man in America) . An important point: Most of the devoted followers of his books, live appearances, and recordings are heterosexual. He now writes almost exclusively for The New Yorker Magazine, and has been criticized by militant gays for making fun of the gay American subculture, sparing no one, especially himself. Life, as always, has come full circle. Sedaris' mainstream success has made him an American cultural phenomenon, making his sexual orientation irrelevant (only he can make it relevant again) . "Sedaris' touch is so assured that the final impression is not comedy but pathos" (Dale Peck) . A brilliant debut, this is a "must-have" title for David Sedaris collectors. This copy is very prominently, hilariously, and beautifully signed and inscribed in black pen on the title page by the author: "Women. They'll suck the fucking paper off a joint, but when old Papa Bear needs a little BJ action...David Sedaris". There is no recipient named. Sedaris is a genuine rarity among superstar-writers: He spends time with every single person who has taken the trouble of going to his reading and waiting patiently in line (which are "circle-around-the-block" long) to get his or her book signed. He writes lengthy, personalized inscriptions to those who want them and has been known to sign into the wee hours of the morning. We do not know of another American writer who sincerely bonds with (rather than keeps his distance from) his readers as Sedaris does. This title is now highly collectible. This is the single most beautiful signed and inscribed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing we have ever found and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. A rare signed copy thus. One of the finest living American writers. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER DAVID SEDARIS TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0316779407.

Sixty Years of Quacking - Limited Edition Print (Signed)

1994. Print. New. Lithograph print by Carl Barks on Acid-free Paper. SIGNED NUMBERED PRINT. Size: 7" x 9" (178mm x 229mm). "Hi, I'm Donald Duck!" is quite special for a number of reasons. If one were to overlook a faint shakiness from the hand of the Old Duck Man, this image could be blown up to a vertical, twenty-four sheet billboard and the whole world would salute as they passed by, chanting in unison, "This is the definitive Donald Duck! May he live to be six thousand years old!" When it was duplicated into a fine art bone china porcelain by the masters at Connoisseur of Malvern, an English ceramics studio, the sculptor had to return to his modelling several times just to get the stance and "bone structure" of the duck right: a deceptively difficult task. Any artist who has tried to draw the duck runs into the same problems. Donald Duck may be anthropomorphic -- talking and acting like a human being -- but, nonetheless, he's a duck… walks like one, originally talked like one (in animation), is built like one and stands like a duck! Just study the figure closely: notice how the head and neck connect -- not like a man -- and how the legs come out of his feathered torso -- not like a man! Carl Barks' 1950s model sheet of how to draw the duck is the best ever done and is still copied today. "Hi, I'm Donald Duck!" is in The Fine Art of Walt Disney's Donald Duck, reproduced as Colour Plate #88, Carl Barks' tenth painting of 1975, chronological #101. It was one of only two minis done slightly smaller than 10"x 8" -- painted to make them more affordable to collectors commissioning his work. (Barks carefully calculated time spent doing an oil painting by measuring his work by the square inch. This oil was originally sold -- amazingly, in retrospect -- by the Old Duck Man in 1975 for a mere $150. Today, it's worth at least $25,000 - $30,000!) Chronology: The painting was published on the title page of the Gladstone comic book, Walt Disney's Comics and Stories #625 (June 1998); plus five Barks pencil concepts for the bone china figurine were reproduced on the Table of Contents page, the figurine itself appearing on the back cover. "Hi, I'm Donald Duck!" was printed by the Black Box of Chicago, image size 8 7/8"x 6 5/8" on 12 1/4"x9 1/2" Opalesque Keramique, a paper constructed of 100% cotton fibre for strength and longevity, guaranteed not to fade under normal and stable storage conditions for hundreds of years. Limited and signed from an edition of 595.

A Plague on Your House. A Eulogy & Necrological Etchings of the Frog

(Florence, MA): Double Elephant Press, 1994. Square octavo. (xiv)pp., + 28ff. plates. One of 60 numbered copies of this, the first book produced by the Double Elephant Press. The text, about the decline of frog populations around the world, gives a humorous spin to this serious topic. Kuch writes, "More for its restraint than for flamboyance is the frog renowned. It out Buddhas Buddha with its stoic reserve, its patient anticipation, with its leap of faith, its enlightened vacuum." Yet, "naked & vulnerable, the frog is too sweet, too trusting--victim of its own lack of protection" and is dying. The text is accompanied by twenty-eight etchings by Kuch showing frogs in various poses, including a couple dancing and one frog standing with its arms crossed. The etchings were printed either with variously colored inks or on colored paper, except for a double fold-out etching that is printed in black. The whole was printed by Arthur Larson in Hadley, Massachusetts on paper handmade by the Velke Losiny Mill in the Czech Republic. Bound by the Three Bear Trap Bindery of Northampton, Mass. in marbled paper-covered boards, with red leather French corners and spine label, and housed in a raw silk-covered slipcase lined in suede. A very fine copy of a rare New England press book.

        GRAPEVINE. Photographs

Cornerhouse Publications. Manchester. 1994. FIRST EDITION. 4to. (12.8 x 11.2 inches). Inscribed by Lipper and with a hand written letter mentioning this book and a future American edition. The inscription, on the illustrated half title page reads " Susan Lipper 4/25/1994. To Richard, Thank You for everything ! Susan". The letter, written in black ink on both sides of an A4 sheet, is addressed "Dear Richard" and accompanies this copy while asking if he would like another. She mentions that it has been selling well in England and that there is a planned American edition due later in the year, and about her Manchester publisher resigning. She also thanks him for his "advice at tuesday morning classes, in the planning stages and also with the proofs". Lipper's address has been cut from the top right hand corner. A fine copy of the book in the original white cloth binding with blind stamped lettering to the front board and the title stamped in black to the spine. In a very near fine dustwrapper with just a hint of rubbing to some edges. Overall a lovely copy of this important work, the first monograph by Lipper. The 55 mono images are followed by text pages of a conversations between Lipper and three residents of Grapevine, West Virginia.

[Los Angeles: Rhino Records / Word Beat, 1994].. Four CDs, in cases, accompanied by 62pp. booklet, pictorial stiff wrappers, illustrated. The whole enclosed in publisher's pictorial board clamshell box. Box a bit shelfworn at corners, otherwise very good or better. Inscribed presentation copy from Ginsberg, inscribed inside the upper lid of the box: "For Lucien Carr 9/28/94 Allen Ginsberg Washington D.C.," accompanied by a large ink drawing covering the blank areas of the lid. Within the booklet of text, he has inscribed and signed it again to Carr "...hopefully the poem's last longer than the metallic C-D's ...." A very good association copy: Ginsberg met Carr at Columbia University in 1943, and through Carr met Jack Kerouac, Neal Cassady and William Burroughs. In the NYT Obituary for Carr (30 January 2005), Ginsberg's earlier comment about Carr's role in the circle of friendships that gave birth to the literary arm of the Beat Generation was quoted: "Lou was the glue." Carr went to work for United Press International in 1946 and was promoted to night news editor in 1956, coincident with the preparations for press of the first public edition of HOWL. Carr was included, with Kerouac, Burroughs and Cassady, in the printed dedication, and when he received his copy, wrote Ginsberg expressing "one small gripe" about his inclusion there, and requesting, out of deference to his privacy, that Ginsberg avoid such mention in future books. At Ginsberg's expense, Carr's name was deleted from the dedication page of the second impression (then already printed), and from subsequent printings. Nonetheless, in 1982, Ginsberg dedicated PLUTONIAN ODE to Carr, "... for friendship all these years...."

Amsterdam: De Verbeelding, 1994 / 2011. Unique object with four parts: A SIGNED first edition copy of A Hundred Summers, A Hundred Winters from Van Manen's archive, a large sheet of press proofs from the book which has hung over the artist's desk since publication, a handwritten text sheet explaining the above, and a custom original box, created by Van Manen for this project, which is elegantly housing these parts.

The Bread of Days, Eleven Mexican Poets

Covelo, CA: Yolla Bolly Press, 1994. Hard Cover. Fine in Fine Slipcase. Hard Cover. P of 24 copies. Signed by Paz, Weinberger, and Chagoya. The edition consists of 140 copies of which 85 in the regular edition include bound suite of prints, 24 copies include an extra unbound print, 12 copies include a full set of unbound prints, and the remaining 20 copies were reserved for the press and artist. This is one of the 24 lettered copies issued with the bound suite of prints and the extra unbound print signed by the artist. & This livre-d'artist was inspired by "An Anthology of Mexican Poetry" printed by the University of Indiana Press in 1958, which included a selection of poetry from the sixteenth to early twentieth centuries. This fine press edition features twelve poems and includes the Spanish text along with Beckett's English translations and the artwork of contemporary Mexican artist, Enrique Chagoya. Octavio Paz chose the poems to be included in the Indiana Press publication; and for this edition he has written notes on each of the poets and an afterword, in which he reflects on compiling the anthology and working with the translator Beckett. (Apparently, creating the Indiana Press Anthology was a difficult project for Beckett as he neither read nor spoke Spanish and had to rely heavily on help from Spanish-speaking friends.) Eliot Weinberger, Octavio Paz';s translator and also a essayist and critic, provides an introduction in which he critically comments on Beckett';s translation and traces the history of the Indiana Press Anthology. The artist Chagoya chose the twelve poems printed in this edition and illustrated them with twelve full page color etchings. "The etchings incorporate visual material from throughout Mexico';s long history. As is characteristic of his artwork, Chagoya has juxtaposed contemporary themes with classical and indigenous forms, adding yet another dimension to the book';s literary content" (prospectus).& Bound in illustrated paper covered boards with linen spine. The text was letterpress printed in Bembo type on Zerkall Halbmatt and Twinrocker Chapin paper by Aaron Johnson. The etchings were printed by Jesus Romero and Curtis Patience on Lana Royal. The binding structure was designed by Julie Chen and bound by Renee Menge. Accompanied by the prospectus, order form, postcard from press, and promotional letter. 144 pages. PRI/061113.
