Long Walk To Freedom: The Autobiography of Nelson Mandela

Boston: Little Brown, 1994. First American edition of this classic autobiography that has went on to sell more than six million copies worldwide. Octavo, original half cloth. Signed "Nelson Mandela 13.5.05" on the title page. It was signed in New York City by Mandela during a visit upon receipt of an honorary doctorate from Amherst College. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Authentic trade editions signed by Mandela are uncommon. The Nelson Mandela who emerges from his memoir… is considerably more human than the icon of legend… Mandela is, on the evidence of his amazing life, neither a messiah nor a moralist nor really a revolutionary but a pragmatist to the core, a shrewd balancer of honor and interests. He is, to use a word unhappily fallen into disrepute, a politician, though one distinguished from lesser practitioners of his calling mainly by his unwavering faith in his ultimate objective, ending white minority rule" (New York Times).

The Stonemason: A Play In Five Acts

New York: Ecco Press, 1994. First edition. Octavo, original half cloth. Warmly inscribed by the author, "For Jim and Brenda with love From Cormac." Fine in a fine dust jacket. The setting is Louisville, Kentucky, in the 1970s. The Telfairs are stonemasons and have been for generations. Ben Telfair has given up his education to apprentice himself to his grandfather, Papaw, a man who knows that "true masonry is not held together by cement but...by the warp of the world." Out of the love that binds these two men and the gulf that separates them from the Telfairs who have forsaken -- or dishonored -- the family trade, Cormac McCarthy has crafted a drama that bears all the hallmarks of his great fiction: precise observation of the physical world; language that has the bite of common speech and the force of Biblical prose; and a breathtaking command of the art of storytelling. "McCarthy has achieved something only a few artists even attempt: He has created his own world...and made it his own -- beautiful, nightmarish, isolated" (Wall Street Journal).

Winston S. Churchill, The Official Biography, The War Papers, Volume 2, Never Surrender, May 1940 - December 1940

London: William Heinemann Ltd., 1994. First edition, only printing. Hardcover. Very good/Very good . The Official Biography of Winston Churchill, initiated by Randolph Churchill but completed by Martin Gilbert, is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life, comprising eight mammoth main text volumes and - so far - seventeen accompanying document or "Companion" volumes. The eight main text volumes were published between 1966 and 1988. Publication of the Companion volumes continues today. This is the British first edition of the second volume of The War Papers, which are the companion document volumes accompanying Volume VI of Churchill's Official Biography. This volume contains documents from May 1940, the month that Churchill became Prime Minister and Germany invaded France and the low countries, through December 1940, with Britain having fought off the immediate threat of Nazi invasion in the Battle of Britain, but nonetheless weak, isolated, and starved for supplies by the U-boat menace. This British first edition is considerably more scarce and highly sought than the U.S. first edition, which is similar in appearance. These Heinemann War Papers volumes - particularly Volumes 1 & 2 - seem destined to rise inexorably in price just like the now quite expensive Volume V Companions. This copy is very good in a very good dust jacket. The red cloth binding is square and tight with sharp corners, bright spine gilt, and minimal wear confined to extremities, but a bit concave at the upper spine from the weight of the massive text block. The contents are nonetheless bright and clean internally with no spotting, no previous ownership marks, and very light soiling to the text block edges. The dust jacket is unclipped and entirely complete with no losses or tears. We note light sunning to the jacket spine, minor wrinkling at the spine ends, and some creasing to the edge of the unclipped front flap. The dust jacket is protected beneath a removable, archival quality clear cover. Bibliographic reference: Zoller A302f2

Autograph musical working manuscript draft in short score of the Sinfonisches Vorspiel for large orchestra. The complete work.

      - Designed as a tribute to the composer on his 60th birthday, the Sinfonisches Vorspiel was first performed at the Musikhalle in Hamburg on November 6, 1994 with the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester, conducted by Albrecht, the dedicatee; the composer was unfortunately unable to attend due to ill-health. Schnittke moved to Hamburg in 1990 to teach composition at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater. He had had his first stroke in 1985; he suffered a second in 1991 and yet another in the year of composition of the present work, 1994, which left him almost completely paralysed. He went on to write only a few more short works thereafter, and also a Ninth Symphony, but its score was almost completely illegible because he was forced by his paralysis to notate it with his left hand.Schnittke is often considered to be the successor to Shostakovich as Russia's premiere composer. His early music showed the strong influence of Dmitri Shostakovich, but he went on to adopt a very polystylistic approach to composition. As his health worsened, however, he adopted a somewhat bleaker but more accessible style; some Schnittke scholars have argued, in fact, that it is the composer's late works that will ultimately be considered as the most influential of his entire output. A dynamic working manuscript of one of Schnittke's last major orchestral compositions. 4 pp. Notated in pencil on 32-stave "Star Nr. 37" music manuscript paper. Large folio (420 x 230 mm.). Unbound. Signed, titled and inscribed to the composer's friend Jürgen Köchel by the composer. Dated May 25, [19]94. Dedicated to the conductor Gerd Albrecht. Scored for triple wind, 4 horns, 3 trombones, tuba, 3 performers on timpani, harp, piano and strings. A very active manuscript, with numerous corrections, amendations, directions and indications pertaining to instrumentation in Schnittke's small, dense hand. Slightly worn. In very good condition overall. Together with a printed edition of the full score published by Sikorski in ca. 1995.

Even grander than the British first editions is this superlative set of the Official Biography main text volumes produced by The Easton Press in 1994. Easton produced this set as twelve volumes (more manageably sized than the original eight, splitting each of the last four volumes into two volumes). The Easton Press Edition claims 24 inches of shelf space, weighs 36 pounds, and fills nearly 8,700 pages. Moreover, it is the finest edition of the Official Biography to date. Each volume is bound in dark red leather, featuring hubbed spines, black title panels, and elaborate decoration with 22 kt. gold accents. The contents are printed on acid-neutral, archival paper, with all page edges gilt, moire fabric endsheets, sewn-in satin ribbon markers, and head and foot bands. The set is profusely illustrated throughout. This particular set is in truly fine, as-new condition. Each volume is crisp, tight, and clearly unread. We note no signs of any use or wear and the ribbon markers appear to be in the same position as they came from the publisher. There are no previous ownership marks of any kind. The set comes with all the original adhesive publisher bookplates, still blank and unaffixed. Please note that we will invoice for actual postage costs for this large, heavy set.

Man And The Sea Shell : [On The Occasion Of The Exhibition Of Paintings By Jon Groom In Lenbachhausfrom September 7 to October 16, 1994]

Edition X, Munich 1994 - Folio. Original brown boards, lettered in grey on spine. Double-thick pages, unopened but with blank inners. A fine copy in the original card slipcase. Twenty-seven images by Jon Groom. First edition, SIGNED BY THE ARTIST, AND WITH A CORRESPONDENCE FROM HIM LAID IN. This livre d'artiste, whose images accompany an English translation of Paul Valéry's essay L'Homme Et La Coquille, was issued in two series of 115 copies, one in English and one in German. This is an unnumbered, hors de commerce copy from the English series. Very scarce: only one copy shows in institutional libraries [Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Munich]. The accompanying correspondence runs to four items, all from the early 1990s: two handwritten postcards, and two ALS on Groom's distinctive notepaper. The recipient of all four was David Gothard, co-founder of the Riverside Studios in London. In 1978 the Riverside staged Groom's first solo exhibition, and the following year Groom worked as a carpenter there to pay the rent on his first studio. He quickly graduated to become an artistic collaborator, working with the choreographer Rosemary Butcher to create Shell, Forcefields And Spaces for the Riverside in 1981. Groom's letters to Gothard look back fondly on past times there: 'I am rereading Beckett with whom I peed with [sic] in the convenience next to the kitchen and between the bar at those old studios in Hammerscmitt [sic].' Also laid in are two handwritten postcards to Gothard from Groom's then partner, the book artist and printmaker Sonja Landberg, and three exhibition fliers -- including one for Groom's solo debut at the Riverside. A rare book, in fine condition, and with a unique association.
