Moon Shot: The Inside Story of America's Race to the Moon

Atlanta:: Turner Publishing Inc,, 1994. 1878685546. A Fine tight copy in a Near Fine bright price clipped dust jacket. Inscribed "To Chuck, Alan Shepard" on titlepage. On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik I, and the space race was born. Desperate to beat the Russians into space, NASA put together a crew of the nation?'s most daring test pilots: the seven men who were to lead America to the moon. The first into space was Alan Shepard; the last was Deke Slayton, whose irregular heartbeat kept him grounded until 1975. They spent the 1960s at the forefront of NASA?'s effort to conquer space, and Moon Shot is their inside account of what many call the twentieth century?'s greatest feat—landing humans on another world. Collaborating with NBC?'s veteran space reporter Jay Barbree, Shepard and Slayton narrate in gripping detail the story of America?'s space exploration from the time of Shepard?'s first flight until he and eleven others had walked on the moon..

Monumenta Cartographica Neerlandica.Alphen aan den Rijn, Canaletto; Houten, HES, 1986-2013. 9 text volumes, 9 portfolio's with facsimile maps, and 1 small index volume. Blue cloth.

Cf. D. Woodward, "Monumenta Cartographica Neerlandica" [Review], in: Imago Mundi XLVI (1994), pp. 176-178. A complete set of Günter Schilder's celebrated Monumenta Cartographica Neerlandica. The series aims to present an inventory of rare and significant maps and charts printed in the Low Countries from the period 1500 to 1700, including maps depicting all areas of the world."It is difficult to over-emphasize the immense importance of Schilder's dedicated task. Each volume and its accompanying portfolio of unbound full-sized reproductions is a feast for the eyes. The maps are carefully described, many of their main legends translated from Latin into Dutch and English, and the locations of their known impressions listed. ... However, Monumenta Cartographica Neerlandica is far more than an illustrated bibliographical description. Each map is put into its context: cartographic, geographic, iconographic, and historical. Furthermore, other maps - not necessarily produced in the Netherlands - that are precursors of or associated with the main subject of the volumes, are also fully described. It would therefore be a mistake for the reader to assume that this work is about only Dutch maps. The extensive use of supporting illustrative material makes the project a veritable iconographic treasure trove ..." (Woodward). With only some minor wear to the edges of the portfolios; a very good set.

?Mr. Speaker, the state of war between Israel and Jordan is over?? King Hussein?s Historic 1994 Address to a Joint Session of Congress signed by the King and Queen Noor.

n.p., [1994]. 8.5" x 11". "Printed Speech Signed ?Hussein? as King and ?Noor Al Hussein? as Queen on the cover, nine pages, 8.5? x 11?, separate sheets stapled together in the upper left. Headed with the crown of Jordan indicating it was issued by the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Titled: ?Address to / The Joint Session of Congress / His Majesty King Hussein I / of the / Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan / Washington D.C. / July 1994.? Fine condition. On July 25, 1994, the Washington Declaration was signed by King Hussein, Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin of Israel, and President Clinton. In part, ?After generations of hostility, blood and tears and in the wake of years of pain and wars, His Majesty King Hussein and Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin are determined to bring an end to bloodshed and sorrow. It is in this spirit that His Majesty King Hussein of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, Mr. Yitzhak Rabin of Israel, met in Washington today at the invitation of President William J. Clinton of the United States of America. This initiative of President William J. Clinton constitutes an historic landmark in the United States' untiring efforts in promoting peace and stability in the Middle East. The personal involvement of the President has made it possible to realise agreement on the content of this historic declaration. The signing of this declaration bears testimony to the President's vision and devotion to the cause of peace ... The long conflict between the two states is now coming to an end. In this spirit the state of belligerency between Jordan and Israel has been terminated...?The next day, both King Hussein and Prime Minister Rabin addressed a Joint Session of Congress. In his address, a printed copy of which he and the Queen have signed and is here offered, King Hussein said, in part, ?This meeting in Washington, at the invitation of President Clinton, represents the beginning of a new phase in our common journey towards peace between Jordan and Israel. It is a milestone on the road toward comprehensive peace in our region...?We also remember today the three generations of gallant Jordanians and so many others who sacrificed themselves for the cause of Palestine. Every household in Jordan has sent a son to answer the Arab call. Many have not returned. Their sacrifice has made it possible for me to be here today. My family has also paid a heavy price. My great grandfather, the leader of the great Arab revolt for freedom, independence and unity, lies buried next to the blessed Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. I was by the side of my grandfather, King Abdallah, at the doors of Al Aqsa Mosque when he was martyred. He was a man of peace who gave his life for this ideal. I have pledged my life to fulfilling his dream. He, too, is here today...?The two Semitic people, the Arabs and the Jews, have endured bitter trials and tribulations during the journey of history. Let us resolve to end this suffering forever and to fulfill our responsibilities as leaders of our peoples and our duty as human beings towards mankind. I come before you today fully conscious of the need to secure a peace for all the children of Abraham. Our land is the birthplace of the divine faiths and the cradle of the heavenly messages to all humanity...?I come before you today encouraged in the knowledge that the prime minister of Israel and his government have responded to the call for peace. They have recognized the Palestinian people and their rights and are negotiating with their chosen leadership in accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolutions 242 and 338.?For our part, we will never forget Palestine, not for a moment. We in Jordan were the first to shoulder our responsibility, and we were the most adversely affected by the legacy of the Palestinian tragedy. And still our people in Jordan remain one united family irrespective of their origins, sharing equally, free to choose our political future and destiny.?My religious faith demands that sovereignty over the holy places in Jerusalem reside with God, and God alone. Dialogue between the faiths should be strengthened. Religious sovereignty should be accorded to all believers of the three Abrahamic faiths in accordance with their religions, and this way Jerusalem will become the symbol of peace and its embodiment as it must be for both Palestinians and Israelis when their negotiations determine the final status of Arab East Jerusalem...?Mr. Speaker, the state of war between Israel and Jordan is over...?"

Jutting out into Poland, it is one of Europe\'s worst devastated territories, but it is also a region that shaped the origin and future development of the Czech state. Coal mining, the first record of which dates back to 1403, has been the region\'s enormous wealth as well as its curse. The industrial revolution facilitated an unprecedented upsurge of the living standards but at the cost of irreversible changes in nature. \'Man is not an omniscient master of the planet who can get away with doing whatever he likes and whatever may suit him at the moment\'. Fine in a fine dust jacket. The recipient is James Ross, who is Professor of Liver Cell Biology at the University of Edinburgh. Traditionally, the human soul is regarded as a nonphysical concept that can only be examined by psychiatrists and theologists. The Astonishing Hypothesis, Nobel Laureate Francis Crick boldly straddles the line between science and spirituality by examining the soul from the standpoint of a modern scientist, basing the soul's existence and function on an in-depth examination of how the human brain "sees."

Paris: Victor Masson, 1860.

First edition, unopened in original printed wrappers, of Pasteur's definitive proof that alcoholic fermentation is due to the action of a living organism (yeast), and is not a purely chemical process as most chemists since Lavoisier had believed. "What did this memoir add to the first deductions Pasteur had drawn from lactic fermentation? He now asserted that he was dealing with a living microorganism. This was his most original contribution. Having been unable to create life or to change it by means of molecular asymmetry, he had set out to study its reproduction. In doing so he had come to a revolutionary definition: Fermentation is the act of reproduction of the living germs that constitute yeast" (Debré, <i>Louis Pasteur</i> (1994), p. 105).<br/><br/> "In December 1857 Pasteur published the first in a series of abstracts, notes, and letters on alcoholic fermentation that culminated in a long and classic memoir of 1860 [the offered work]. Divided into two major sections, dealing respectively with the fate of sugar and of yeast in alcoholic fermentation, it inflicted on the chemical theory what Duclaux called "a series of blows straight from the shoulder, delivered with agility and assurance." Pasteur established that alcoholic fermentation invariably produces not only carbonic acid and ethyl alcohol-as was well known-but also appreciable quantities of glycerin and succine acid as well as trace amounts of cellulose, "fatty matters," and "indeterminate products." On the basis of these results, Pasteur emphasized the complexity of alcoholic fermentation and attacked the tendency of chemists since Lavoisier to depict it as the simple conversion of sugar into carbonic acid and alcohol. If the alleged simplicity of the process had formerly been seen as evidence of its chemical nature, he argued, then its actual complexity ought now to be seen as evidence of its dependence on the activity of a living organism. In truth, the complexity of alcoholic fermentation was such as to prevent the writing of a complete equation for it, a fact which was only to be expected, since chemistry was "too little advanced to hope to put into a rigorous equation a chemical act correlative with a vital phenomenon." <br/><br/> "However impressive this line of attack against the chemical theory, an even more decisive mode of argument derived from Pasteur's ability to produce yeast and alcoholic fermentation in a medium free of organic nitrogen..         Antiphonarium. Vellum manuscript, produced in Spain, most probably between 1603 and 1605.

N.pl., n.d. 221 leaves in 28 gatherings, lacking leaf 189. Bound in full contemporary calf over thick wooden boards, the binding measures 55x40 cm, the leaves 51x36 cm (Ref: C. Aniz Iriarte & R. Callejo de Paz, 'Real Monasterio de San Pedro Mártir de Mayorga, fundación de la reina Catalina de Lancáster', Salamanca, 1994. A copy of this book comes with the manuscript) (Details binding: The utilitarian aspect of this kind of manuscripts, which were used for years on end for the observance of the Divine Office (see below), explains why the bands of this book are so heavy, the boards so thick, and the parchment so durable and sturdy, and the binding so worn. The back has 5 raised bands, each wooden board is protected by 5 iron studs, all 4 corners of both boards have been strengthened with iron bands) (Condition binding: Back very scuffed and worn, showing several old repairs with strips of leather. The leather along the edges shows wear. The leather on the backcover looks shabby and has been damaged on several places. Both vellum pastdowns have partly been removed. The joints are split, and the hinges are weak.) (Details interior: Script : the text is written in a clear Gothic letter with broad and rounded forms. The letter can be identified as the Iberian Textualis. (see: Albert Derolez, 'The palaeography of Gothic manuscript books from the twelfth to the early sixteenth century'. Cambridge 2006, p. 111-117) On each parchment folium are six lines black text in Latin, with black quadratic musical notation on red staves of five lines. The height of the letters is between 1.3 and 1.8 cm. There are two kind of initials at the beginning of each antiphon, the majority is painted red and blue, and others are spiraling black arabeskish initials, cadel style, sometimes highlighted with yellow paint. The penwork of the coloured initials is filled with a red and blue wave-like pattern. Remarkable are the S-initials formed by two fishes. The standard initials measure ca. 7 cm, some of them are bigger, a few even much bigger. The abbreviation for a psalm (p) , responsorium (r), versus (v) or antiphon (a or an) are red. Also rubricated are the incipits of the psalms (e.g. 'Benedictus', or 'Deus deus') and the mentioning of the Hours (e.g. 'ad Laudes' or 'in iii° no(cturno)'), the days of the week (e.g. 'fer iii'), or feast (e.g 'In festo Inocentium' (sic!)) The numbers of the leaves are also in red, on the recto side at the right upper corner. Half of the gatherings bears a faint signature, which runs from a to z, and aa to ee. There are no catchwords. The manuscript is very probably a copy of a (much) older manuscript Antiphonarium. The spelling shows signs of Medieval Latin, for instance e for ae (querite for quaerite, Marie for Mariae), -nc- for -nt- (nunciavit for nuntiavit, silencium for silentium), habundantia for abundantia, Hemanuel for Emanuel, Israhel for Israel.) (Condition interior: Some small holes in the first and last leaves; right lower corners of the leaves greasy and well thumbed. Occasional and elegant needle and thread repair to a rip or tear. Occasionally a tear in a margin has been repaired with a piece of vellum from another manuscript. The last 2 leaves show more repairs. On the blank lower margin of the verso of leaf 70 a cursive manuscript note (18th century?) on the use of a responsorium on that page for the 'Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Nievas', Our Lady of the Snows, also known as Saint Mary of the Snows, a popular saint in the 15th and 16th century. There are some small marginal pencil notes in Spanish) (General note: An antiphonarium, or 'liber antiphonarius', is not only a liturgical book intended for the use of a choir. It is more, it is also a construction, the building of which was started some 19 centuries ago in late antiquity. It took, like later gothic cathedrals, ages to construct and grow. An antiphonarium is characterized, as its name implies, by the assignment to it of the antiphons (i.e. alternate chants) used in various parts of the Roman liturgy, not for the celebration of the Eucharist (Mass), but for the Divine Office. It contained the antiphons and antiphonal chants sung by cantor, congregation, and the choir at the canonical Hours, also called Divine Office. In this Office a duty for God was accomplished. This meant that certain prayers, psalms and antiphons had to be recited and/or sung at fixed (canonical) hours of the day or night by priests, monks, or nuns. The choir gathered for this service around a pulpit on which the antiphonarium stood. The 150 psalms, divinely-inspired poetical prayers, of the book of Psalms (a book of the Old Testament) form the heart of the liturgy of Hours. 'As at present commonly understood, an antiphon consists of one or more psalm verses or sentences from the Holy Scripture which are sung before and after each psalm and the Magnificat during Matins and Vespers. The verse which serves as the antiphon text contains the fundamental thought of the psalm to which it is sung, and indicates the point of view from which it is to be understood. In other words, it gives the key to the liturgical and mystical meaning of the psalm with regard to the feast on which it occurs'. The antiphons, which are recited throughout the seven days of the week at fixed hours, are preceded and followed by short choral prayers. Sometimes the psalms were also followed by a reading from the bible, called a 'capitulum', which can be preceded or followed by a blessing, or followed by a 'responsorium', a choral reaction to the bible reading. The psalm after an antiphon can often be replaced by a 'canticum', in which the choir sang an inspiring passage from the bible, for instance the 'Magnificat'. 'The melodies to which the antiphon texts are sung, especially those preceding the Vesper psalms, are generally of a simple character. Seldom has any word two or three notes. Their melodic importance consists in their preparing the mind for the following psalm tune, to which they form a sort of prelude and of whose character they partake'. 'As the antiphones were intended to be sung by the congregation, they are of simple and graphic construction. They breathe a deeply religious spirit and are an efficacious means by which to reveal to the singer the mystical contents of the texts which they musically interpret'. (Quotations from the Catholic Encyclopedia s.v. Antiphon, Antiphonary and Divine Office)) (Note: Our antiphonarium is not a show piece to impress, it was made for local use at a monastery or church. It contains both the 'pars hiemalis' and 'pars aestivalis'. The first (winter) part is the start of the liturgical year. It opens with Advent Sunday, which prepares for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas, and lasts till Lent. The second (summer) part prepares for Eastern and ends with the sunday after Pentecost. Following this chronological order, only the songs for the two most important offices of the 'Divine Office', the Laudes and the Vespers are given. We made some spot checks, and compared the order of the antiphons in this manuscript with the survey of the pre-Trident liturgy as presented on the site: http://divinumofficium.com, with the 'Dominican Ordinarium' of Humbert of 1256, (See http://www.musicasacra.com/dominican/Texts/ordinarium-humbert-1256.pdf) and the printed text of 'Antiphonarium et Hymnarium secundum morem Sanctae Romanae Ecclesiae' edited by M. de Schiavio, Naples, 1685. The order of antiphons in our manuscript resembles roughly that of the offices in these 3 sources. The last one seems closest. There are quite a number of variations and additions, some antiphons have been omitted. Some additions seem to point at 'Maria devotion'. As all manuscript antiphonaria seem to differ in the order of antiphons, responsoria and versus, we present a survey of the contents of the first 82 pages. You may consult this survey on our website: http://www.fragmentaselecta.nl/AntiphonariumSurvey.pdf . Some interesting features are (1) that the first antiphon with which the Advent normally starts, 'In illa die stillabunt montes dulcedinem' is preceded in our antiphonarium, as a kind of 'incipit', by a verse from Jesaja in which the coming of Christ is supposedly announced: 'Ecce nomen dominum venit de longinquo et claritas eius replet orbem terrarum' (Jes. 30:27), followed by a 'Magnificat', and finally by a 'responsium' in the same vein from Jeremiah: 'Ecce dies veniunt dicit dominus et suscitabo david germen iustum et regnabit rex et sapiens erit et faciet iudicium et iustitiam in terra. Et hoc est nomen quod vocabunt eum dominus iustus noster. In diebus illis salvabitur iuda et israhel habitabit confidenter' (Jeremiah 23:5 & 6) Another interesting feature (2) is the stock of seven so-called 'O Antiphons', hymns dating from late antiquity, which were sung in the week before christmas. Each of them starts with an elaborate initial of the exclamation 'O', followed by an epithet of Christ, mentioned in Scripture. They are: O Sapientia (O Wisdom), O Adonai (O Lord), O Radix Jesse (O Root of Jesse), O Clavis David (O Key of David), O Oriens (O Dayspring), O Rex Gentium (O King of the nations), O Emmanuel (O With Us is God). An interesting feature (3) of our antiphonarium is that approximately halfway in the book, the text of Psalm 95 (Greek numbering 94), 'Venite exultemus Domino' is written in full and in prose, it is presented without staves and musical notes. This psalm is called an 'invitatory psalm' because it is an invitation (Venite!, Come!) to the entire day's sequence of prayers. It was sung every day of the year, year after year, at cock crow before matins. The capitals in this psalm are alternately monochrome red or blue. In the margins of the psalm we find rubricated indications for choral use, 'chorus 1' and 'chorus 2'. At 4 passages has been placed an 'incipit' of the antiphon, "Venite', for 'Venite adoremus ... quia ipse est Deus noster', or 'Venite exultemus Domino'. Very remarkable is that the psalm in this manuscript seems to be a mixture of the socalled 'versio romana' and 'versio gallicana', both revised translations of the psalms of the Church father Hieronymus, the first made from the 'Versio Vetus Latina', the second later on from the Greek 'Hexapla'. The 'versio gallicana' became the psalter of the Vulgate bible, and the basis for Gregorian chant. 'It became the standard psalter used in the canonical hours throughout the West from the time of Charlemagne'. (Wikipedia s.v. Latin Psalters, which lemma also offers a complete text of our psalm in 6 different Latin versions, including the 'versio romana' and 'gallicana') In the psalm (psalm 95) of our antiphonarium can be detected a trace of the obsolete 'versio romana'. Verse 3 of this psalm in our antiphonarium ends with 'Quoniam non repellet dominus plebem suam', a phrase which Hieronymus cancelled in the revised 'versio gallicana', and which was skipped from the Bible. The scribe omitted furthermore, while copying psalm 95, erroneously verse 6 and the first half of verse 7. He did so probably because this omitted verse 'Venite adoremus ... quia ipse est Deus noster' was sung as an antiphon before and after this psalm) (Date and Origin: On the verso of the last leaf has been pasted a blank slip of paper. This hides underneath a clear and legible text, written in 2 columns, a kind of colophon. The first column reads: 'El escriptor de este libro/ y luysa de quinones/ la q co su diligesia/ lo puso en perfeciones/ pide a vras mercedes/ una ave maria/ en sus oraciones'. (Above the letter q and o and the e of the 3rd, and the first e and first r of the 5th line has been written a contraction sign) The second column reads: 'La ilustre señora/ de medoca dona nïa/ una magificat pide/ a vras mercedes/ por charidat y cortesia'. (Above the letter e in mendoca and the a in dona, the i of nia, and the first a in magificat and the r in vras has also been placed a contraction sign. In full: 'El escriptor de este libro y Luysa de Quiñones, la que con su diligencia lo puso en perfeciones piden a vuestras mercedes una Ave Maria en sus oraciones'. And: 'La ilustre Señora De Mendoca donada novicia una Magnificat pide a vuestras mercedes por charidat y cortesia'. This is, 'The scribe of this book and Luisa de Quiñones, who with her diligence put this to perfection, ask your graces for a 'Ave Maria' in their prayers. The illustrious Señora de Mendoza, novice nun, asks your graces a Magnificat for her charity and courtesy'. Luisa de Quiñones, daughter of the nobleman Don Gonzalo de Quiñones and Doña Leonor Guzmán, was prioress of the Monastery of 'San Pedro Martir' in her hometown Mayorga de Campos, near Valladolid, from 1591 till 1594. This 'monasterio' was a female convent of the Dominican Order, and numbered in those days ca. 40/50 women, most of them from propertied families. It still exists and it celebrated its 600th anniversary in 1994 with 15 Sisters. Luisa Quiñones is already mentioned as a member (sor) of the convent in 1574. With her advent her family, the Quiñones, acted for some decades as sponsors of the monastery. Furthermore, several female members of this family entered the monastery in the last quarter of the 16th and first quarter of the 17th century. It started in 1580 with Luisa's brother, Don Gonzalo Quiñones, and her sister, Doña Catalina, who contributed 100 ducates in order to restore the monastery and its church. Under Luisa's guidance the monastery went through a flourishing period, it grew in members and possessions, and through gifts. She is mentioned in a list of 16th century prioresses as a 'mujer de grand autoridad'. Luisa left the monastery in 1600, at the age of 50, and already a nun for 36 years, to lead in Villafranca del Bierzo a new female establishment of the Dominican Order. In 1603 she returned to Mayorga, because she did not comply with the rigorous reforms in that new monastery, called La Laura. Luisa met after her return to her old monastery in Mayorga a young novice 'Sor Juana de Mendoza Hurtado', who had entered the monastery with her 'vestición del hábito monástico' in 1601, probably at the age of 13/14, as had Luisa done. On the 17th of march 1605 Juana took her monastic profession. If this 'Juana de Mendoza' is the same as the 'ilustre señora de Mendoca', described on the last page of the Antiphonarium as 'donada novicia' (novice), then this antiphonarium must have been written between 1603 and 1605. Luisa and the novice, acted probably as sponsors of the production of this manuscript. That they asked on the last page for a 'Ave Maria' and a 'Magnificat', both ancient Maria hymns, seems appropriate, for the devotion to the Virgin Mary was a very important element of Dominican spirituality, especially for female Dominicans. It was believed that the Spaniard Dominicus de Guzmán established the Dominican order, (officially acknowledged in 1215 by the pope as 'Ordo Praedicatorum') under the good graces and guidance of Maria, mother of God. Luisa, we assume, took care of the production of the manuscript (la que su diligencia lo puso en perfeciones) and young Juana, who brought a monastic dowry of 600 'ducados', received thanks for providing the funds (charidat y cortesia). Who the scribe was and where the antiphonarium was written the book doesnot tell. He or she was probably not illuster enough to be mentioned by name. Who the recipients of this antiphonarium were, we also donot know. Most probably the monastery of both ladies. The female Dominicans could not perform apostolic work as their male colleagues did. Nevertheless, they were not idle. The 'programma de formación' of the nuns of the monastery of San Pedro Mártir consisted of 'el estudio del Evangelio, Liturgia, Canto, Constituciones, Oración y Trabajo'. (Real Monasterio, p. 129) All the Sisters had to perform tasks or services. Some had to wash, clean and cook. The members of the Choir, who chanted the Divine Office, had to take care of the administration, the storehouses and supplies, concierge services and the needlework. The Spanish Dominican scholars Aniz Iriarte & Callejo de Paz, who investigated the history of this monastery, do not mention in their book the existence of a scriptorium, or the production of manuscripts or books. If this manuscript was produced in the monastery, it was probably done by a hired secular scribe, or by some female 'escriptor' from another monastery. Or it was produced in a neighbouring monastery. The monastery of San Pedro Mártir went through two disasters during its more than 600 years of existence, a big fire ca. 1500, and the so-called 'desamortización' of 1835-1837, during which the Spanish church suffered from the 'Ecclesiastical Confiscations of Mendizábal', or in Spanish 'La desamortización eclesiástica de Mendizábal'. In this period a set of decrees was issued that resulted in the expropriation and privatisation of monastic properties in Spain. The 'desamortización' led to the vacating of most of the ancient monasteries in Spain, which had been occupied by the various convent orders for centuries. (See Wikipedia s.v. 'Ecclesiastical Confiscations of Mendizábal') The dominican community of the monastery of San Pedro Mártir in Mayorga was also dissolved, and its properties were sold by auction. However, some artistic and religious objects were saved secretly, and were hidden in private houses or churches. (solo algunos bienes de carácter religioso y artístico pudieron salvarse, ocultándolos en casas particulares o depositándolos en iglesias y monasterios de contemplativas, cuando esto pudo lograrse'. (Real Monasterio, p. 278)) Between 1837 and 1845 the administration of the monastery ceased to exist, but after that period the Sisters gradually reestablished themselves. It was probably during this critical period that this Antiphonarium was lost to the monastery. It was sold by the state, or must have lain hidden somewhere, was perhaps forgotten, and popped up again in a Belgian junkstore somewhere in the second half of the 20th century. (See below) (Provenance: The last owner and rescuer of this antiphonarium was the Dutch parish priest (pastoor) Marinus Petrus Janssen, 1923-2014, fellow brother of the Cistercian Abbey Mariënkroon, and since 1978 priest in Sluis, a small town in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, the southern part of the province Zeeland. He had three brothers who were Cistercians, and one who was a Franciscan. (See his obituary notice: http://www.mensenlinq.nl/overlijdensberichten/drs-marinus-petrus-janssen-5677425) He seems to have been one of those priests, who, though not popular with his bishop for their unorthodox behaviour and opinions, was loved and admired by his parishioners. He was a man who had an aversion to bragging. For his parishioners he was just 'pasterke', an untranslatable 'honorary' title which implies admiration, intimacy and appreciation. Already in his eighties he still celebrated Mass, and visited the old of his flock. His nephews and heirs, now in their forties, like to tell anecdotes about their uncle. A visit was not a punishment for them when they were young. They tell about tomfoolery and (practical) jokes. Once their uncle burried a gypsum statuette of a saint, which he had painted with gold. When it was found by a boy, the village fell under the spell of gold fever, until the statuette came under the eyes of the local goldsmith. On one occasion, when his church suffered from the inconvenience of too many pigeons, he borrowed from a farmer a device to prevent flocks of starlings to plunder his orchard. He installed it in his church-tower, and frightened the pigeons and his parish by the enormous boom caused by this device. A striking anecdote tells about the broadmindedness of this priest. He once surprised a young couple, who were kissing, or perhaps a little more, in the confessional box of his church. They ran away, but the reverend Mr. Janssen yelled at them laughingly that there was no need to be afraid or ashamed, because they were in the house of God, and that God was love. He said of himself, when he was interviewed by the provincial newspaper on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of his ordination in 2007, that he did not consider himself to be a man without sin. He was looking for heaven on earth, rather than in the sky. 'What afterlife means, you donot know, I donot know, nor does the pope. For us heaven is for the time being not to be found in the sky. We must look around in our society to see God. By doing so, we might stumble onto something marvelous, peace for example'. (see: http://www.pzc.nl/regio/zeeuws-vlaanderen/zestig-jaar-pasterke-voor-mensen-1.1856232#content). We thank him for rescuing this antiphonarium. His nephews told us that their uncle found this manuscript once in a kind of junk store somewhere in Belgium. The owner confessed that he was planning to make decorative lampshades of the parchment. Abhorred by this prospect Mr. Janssen decided to buy the manuscript. He thus rescued it from destruction. A photograph of 'pasterke' Janssen can be found here: http://www.fragmentaselecta.nl/MarinusPetrusJanssen.pdf . We found a blog of a student of Medieval Studies at the University of Toronto who offers pictures, made in 2013, of vellum manuscript lampshades to be found in the Hearst Castle, in San Simeon, California. See especially the picture with 4 lamps in W. R. Hearst?'s private library: http://weblog.larkvi.com/page/2/ ) (Collation: a - z8, aa - dd8, ee6; (leaf aa5 (leaf 189) has been removed))

        Barbara Bush: A Memoir ***Signed***

Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, NY 1994 - Inscribed "With best Wishes / Barbara Bush / November 22nd, 1999" on title page in blue ink. An interesting note on the date of this signature is that it was signed exactly on the 36th anniversary of the death of the 35th president, John F. Kennedy. Barbara Bush was born in 1925 to Pauline and Marvin Pierce, who later became president of McCall Corporation. In the suburban town of Rye, New York, she had a happy childhood. She went to boarding school at Ashley Hall in South Carolina, and it was at a dance during Christmas vacation when she was only 16 that she met George Bush, a senior at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. They became engaged a year and a half later, just before he went off to war as a Navy torpedo bomber pilot. By the time George returned on leave, Barbara had dropped out of Smith College. Two weeks later, on January 6, 1945, they were married. After the war, George graduated from Yale, and they set out for Texas to start their lives together. Six children were born to them: George, Robin, Jeb, Neil, Marvin, and Dorothy. Meanwhile, George built a business in the oil industry. With Texas as home base, he then turned to politics and public service, serving as a member of Congress, U. S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Chairman of the Republican National Committee, Chief of the U. S. Liaison Office in the People's Republic of China, Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, and later as Vice President. In those 44 years of marriage, Mrs. Bush managed 29 moves of the family. When her husband was away, she became the family linchpin, providing everything from discipline to carpools. The death of their daughter Robin from leukemia when she was not quite four left George and Barbara Bush with a lifelong compassion. She says, "Because of Robin, George and I love every living human more." Barbara Bush was always an asset to her husband during his campaigns for public office. Her friendly, forthright manner won her high marks from the voters and the press. As wife of the Vice President, she selected the promotion of literacy as her special cause. As First Lady, she called working for a more literate America the "most important issue we have." Involved with many organizations devoted to this cause, she became Honorary Chairman of the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy. A strong advocate of volunteerism, Mrs. Bush helped many causes--including the homeless, AIDS, the elderly, and school volunteer programs. Today Barbara Bush lives in a home she and her husband built in Houston, Texas, where she enjoys being part of the community. Their children and grandchildren visit them often in Houston and at the family summer home in Kennebunkport, Maine. Devoted to her family, Mrs. Bush still finds time to work on an autobiography, serve on the Boards of AmeriCares and the Mayo Clinic, and continue her prominent role in the Barbara Bush Foundation. The biographies of the First Ladies are from ¿The First Ladies of the United States of America,¿ by Allida Black. Copyright 2009 by the White House Historical Association.
