Kammavaca

[Burma: 19th century]. (22 1/2 x 5 3/16 inches). 16 leaves (5 3/16 x 22 1/2 inches), each lacquered in red with elaborate overall decoration in gilt, 14 leaves with lines of black/dark brown lacquer text in square script (known as 'magyi-zi) recto and verso, two leaves with text on one side only. (Gilded decoration rubbed). Unbound between a pair of wooden coverboards, lacquered in red and with gilt decoration on outer surfaces, covers and text leaves with a single hole for tying. All within a dark red morocco-backed cloth box. The Kammavaca is a Pali term describing verses from the Tipitaka that relate to rituals of monastic life and ordination. It is considered to be one of the most sacred of Burmese religious texts often commissioned by lay-people as works of merit when a son entered a Buddhist monastery. "Kammavaca are volumes of one, five, or nine extracts from the Theravadin Vinaya, each relating to specific ceremonies associated with monks. Noel F. Singer writes that the earliest kammavaca consisted of folios made of plain palm leaves, each of which had four lines of square-inked script on a gold or silver background." ("Kammavaca Texts: Their Covers and Binding Ribbons," Arts of Asia, 23, May-June 1993) "In the 17th century, folios began to be made of pieces of cloth coated with lacquer and painted with cinnabar, and the square letters were written in thick, black lacquer. On rare occasions, folios were of ivory. Designs in gilt, which had been reserved for the ends of folios, end papers, and wooden coverboards, now began to appear between the lines of text. By the end of the 19th century, the lines of script on the folio increased to six or seven and sheets of brass or copper were introduced as folios." Trainspotting

Secker & Warburg, 1993. First British (and true first) Edition (first printing). The debut novel by the author of THE ACID HOUSE, the acclaimed "jarring, fragmented ride through the dark underbelly of Edinburgh." Written in the local language of the streets, this book became one of the most-imitated stories of the 1990's. This is the very scarce hardcover printing -- estimates vary between 100 and 600 copies printed. The hardcover copies were earmarked for the Scottish library system, but were rejected as being "unsuitable" -- Welsh is said to have sold these off at an early Glasgow reading. Basis for the very successful film. Fine/Fine (the speckled top edge appears on every copy) but for the usual light browning of the pages. Signed by Welsh on the title page. From the Larry Owens collection. This book is available for U.S. domestic purchase only. . Signed by Author. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine.

        Trainspotting [Signed Uncorrected Proof Copy]

London: Secker & Warburg. (1993). The uncorrected proof copy of his first novel, acclaimed upon publication and later the basis for the phenomenally successful movie that became a cultural milestone of the 1990s. The first edition of this book is scarce -- preceding the movie and its associated cultural uproar by a couple of years, it was issued in a hardcover edition reported at only 600 copies; the proof is many times scarcer; we have seen it only a handful of times. This copy is signed by Welsh. Shallow corner creases; very near fine in wrappers. . First Edition. Softcover.

AN ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR OF JOHN TENNIEL'S FAMOUS "THE MAD HATTER RUNNING (WITH TEACUP AND TOAST)"

[Tenniel, John] ["Carroll, Lewis" aka Charles L. Dodgson). AN ORIGINAL WATERCOLOUR OF JOHN TENNIEL'S FAMOUS "THE MAD HATTER RUNNING (WITH TEACUP AND TOAST)" An original Tenniel image, taken directly from the woodblock in the British Museum and hand colored by artist Francine Black for Macmillan, signed and dated November 1993 directly below. Image size approx. 4.5" x 4.5" and now mounted, glazed and framed to a size of 16" by 20". The original Tenniel drawings were of course uncolored; however Macmillan commissioned Francine Black in 1993 to hand color a small number of these images for a promotional campaign. It seems remarkable to us that Macmillan received permission to take this imprint directly from the original woodblocks held in the British Museum, which had been engraved by the Dalziel brothers from the drawings Tenniel had done for the first editions of Lewis Carroll's books, yet it's true. It's been years since we've seen one of these charming little paintings and this particular illustration from Chapter 11 (Who Stole The Tarts?) is both one of the very best known. An uncommon opportunity to acquire GENUINELY RELATED ARTWORK from the great Tenniel/Dalziel British Museum archive (as opposed to the millions of items created for the "Alice Industry." In Fine condition.. Signed. Illus. by Francine Black.

        REALITY SANDWICHES FOTOGRAFIEN

[Berlin]: Nishen, [1993].. Small oblong quarto. Pictorial wrappers. Illustrated throughout with Ginsberg's photographs. A few small discolorations to front endsheets at lower edge, otherwise a very good copy. Later impression (first paperback?), newly copyrighted, but with contents identical to the 1989 impression in pictorial boards. Edited, with prefatory essay, by Michael Köhler. A substantial collection of Ginsberg's photographs of friends, colleagues and places, captioned by him in the lower margins. A first rate association copy, inscribed by Ginsberg "For Lucien Carr in the capital, from the Tyger 1/28/92 = Allen Ginsberg." The blank facing the title-page is filled with Ginsberg's drawing of "Tyger!" extending over into the inner margin of the title-page. Ginsberg met Carr at Columbia University in 1943, and through Carr met Jack Kerouac, Neal Cassady and William Burroughs. In the NYT Obituary for Carr (30 January 2005), Ginsberg's earlier comment about Carr's role in the circle of friendships that gave birth to the literary arm of the Beat generation was quoted: "Lou was the glue." Carr went to work for United Press International in 1946 and was promoted to night news editor in 1956, coincident with the preparations for press of the first public edition of HOWL. Carr was included, with Kerouac, Burroughs and Cassady, in the printed dedication, and when he received his copy, wrote Ginsberg expressing "one small gripe" about his inclusion there, and requesting, out of deference to his privacy, that Ginsberg avoid such mention in future books. At Ginsberg's expense, Carr's name was deleted from the dedication page of the second impression (then already printed), and from subsequent printings. Nonetheless, in 1982, Ginsberg dedicated PLUTONIAN ODE to Carr, "... for friendship all these years...."
