Richard Nixon ALS commentary on the Gulf war "War is bad, but bad peace is worse"

Woodcliff Lake, NJ, January 8, 1991. 7" x 10.5". "Single page ALS on Richard Nixon letterhead, 7"" x 10.5"", dated ""1-8-91"", and signed by Richard Nixon as ""Sincerely RN"". Accompanied by the postmarked mailing envelope 9.5"" x 4"" with small surface smudge, and the Newspaper clipping referred to in his letter (clipped from The Ledger Lakeland, Florida, but originally printed in the New York Times Sunday edition), with a handwritten note and date along top edge.Richard Nixon pens a note to Bill Breseman, about an article he wrote in the Sunday New York Times regarding the ongoing Gulf crisis in January 1991. His lengthy newspaper article provides his strong opinions about Hussein ""It is time for some straight talk about why 400,000 young Americans spent Christmas in the deserts of Saudi Arabia….We must first be clear what the conflict is not about… If we must resort to military force to drive Saddam Hussein from Kuwait, it will not be a war about democracy"" Having then backed his viewpoints with his confirmed conclusion that ""We are in the Persian Gulf for two major reasons. First Hussein has unlimited ambitions to dominate one of the most important strategic areas in the world…Had we not intervened an international outlaw would today control more than 40 percent of the worlds oil…What happens to the economies of other great industrial nations directly affects the economy of the United States. We can not allow Hussein to blackmail us and our allies into accepting his aggressive goals by giving him a choke hold on our oil lifeline""But Nixon then draws the bigger picture, ultimately one of preventing a world war as oil equates to the funding of arms allowing Hussein to grow his power ""Because he has oil he has the means to acquire the weapons he needs for aggression against his neighbors, eventually including nuclear weapons..But we can be sure that if Hussein profits from aggression, other potential aggressors in the world will be tempted to wage war against their neighbors.""In his ALS to Bill Breseman, Nixon sums up his newspaper article ""My views are simple. We all want peace but while war is bad, a bad peace is worse because it will lead to bigger war"" Nixon holds a strong view about the domino effect of the war in the middle east thus validating the need to take our US troops away from our home soil and fight abroad. A revealing letter paired with his interesting published commentary."

        The Steel Albatross

Pocket Books, New York, NY 1991 - Signed " Scott Carpenter" on title page in black ink. Scott Carpenter, a dynamic pioneer of modern exploration, has the unique distinction of being the only human ever to penetrate both inner and outer space, thereby acquiring the dual title, Astronaut/Aquanaut. He was born in Boulder, Colorado, on May 1, 1925, the son of research chemist Dr. M. Scott Carpenter and Florence Kelso Noxon Carpenter. He attended the University of Colorado from 1945 to 1949 and received a bachelor of science degree in Aeronautical Engineering. Carpenter was commissioned in the U.S. Navy in 1949. He was given flight training at Pensacola, Florida and Corpus Christi, Texas and designated a Naval Aviator in April, 1951. During the Korean War he served with patrol Squadron SIX, flying anti-submarine, ship surveillance, and aerial mining missions in the Yellow Sea, South China Sea, and the Formosa Straits. He attended the Navy Test Pilot School at Patuxent River, Maryland, in 1954 and subsequently was assigned to the Electronics Test Division of the Naval Air Test Center. In the assignment he flew tests in every type of naval aircraft including multi and single-engine jet and propeller-driven fighters, attack planes, patrol bombers, transports, and seaplanes. From 1957 to1959 he attended the Navy General Line School and the Navy Air Intelligence School and was then assigned as Air Intelligence Officer to the Aircraft Carrier, USS Hornet. Carpenter was selected as one of the original seven Mercury Astronauts on April 9, 1959. He underwent intensive training with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), specializing in the fields of communication and navigation. He served as backup pilot for John Glenn during the preparation for America's first manned orbital space flight. Carpenter flew the second American manned orbital flight on May 24, 1962. He piloted his Aurora 7 spacecraft through three revolutions of the earth, reaching a maximum altitude of 164 miles. The spacecraft landed in the Atlantic Ocean about 1000 miles southeast of Cape Canaveral after 4 hours and 54 minutes of flight time. On leave of absence from NASA, Carpenter participated in the Navy's Man-in the-Sea Project as an Aquanaut in the SEALAB II program off the coast of La Jolla, California, in the summer of 1965. During the 45-day experiment, Carpenter spent 30 days living and working on the ocean floor. He was team leader for two of the three ten-man teams of Navy and civilian divers who conducted deep sea diving activities based in a sea floor habitat at a depth of 205 feet. He returned to duties with NASA as Executive Assistant to the Director of the Manned Spaceflight Center and was active in the design of the Apollo Lunar Landing Module and in underwater extravehicular activity (EVA) crew training. In 1967, he returned to the Navy's Deep Submergence Systems Project (DSSP) as Director of Aquanaut Operations during the SEALAB III experiment. (The DSSP office was responsible for directing the Navy's Saturation Diving Program, which included development of deep-ocean search, rescue, salvage, ocean engineering, and Man-in-the-Sea capabilities.) Upon retirement from the Navy in 1969, Carpenter founded and was chief executive officer of Sear Sciences, Inc., a venture capital corporation active in developing programs aimed at enhanced utilization of ocean resources and improved health of the planet. In pursuit of these and other objectives, he worked closely with the French oceanographer J.Y. Cousteau and members of his Calypso team. He has dived in most of the world's oceans, including the Artic under ice. As a consultant to sport and professional diving equipment manufacturers, he has contributed to design improvements in diving instruments, underwater breathing equipment, swimmer propulsion units, small submersibles, and other underwater devices. [n.p.], 1991.Original pen, ink and watercolor, signed and inscribed with title on reverse.Image size: 8 7/8 x 10 5/8 inches; 226 x 270 mm. Beautifully matted, framed and glazed. (Frame size: 17 1/8 x 18 7/8 inches; 434 x 480 mm.).A lovely illustration of "Mikado", a black, ginger and white cat, situated on a chair. Beautifully framed with a white mat and metallic gold ribbon border, additionally embellished with blue and white decorative ribbon at each corner.Lesley Anne Ivory has gained her reputation as the world's most popular painter of cats by sustaining a superlative level of invention and craftsmanship. She studied at the art schools of St Albans, Watford and Luton, and, having gained the National Diploma in Design, taught at a school in Bedfordshire. Over a decade, she exhibited wood-engravings of wildlife at the Royal Academy, while creating an increasing demand for her card designs. Now married to the artist Evan Ivory and living in Hertfordshire, she works as a freelance designer and illustrator. As an illustrator, she has published many books, including Cats Know Best (1988), Meet My Cats (1989), Cats in the Sun (1991), Cats Among the Toys (1993) and Star Cats (1998). Never complacent, despite her secure position, she continues to test and stretch herself, both technically and conceptually, advancing by way of a balance between the observing eye and the designing hand. Though she is patiently fascinated by the appearance and behavior of cats, and studies their individuality with constant and precise attention, she is never content with providing a loosely delineated backdrop or with creating hastily sketched verisimilitude. She always thinks in terms of a complete pictorial design, drawing on her impressive knowledge of the history of design in order to extend her own visual language.

On Certainty, edited by G. E. M. Anscombe and G. H. Von Wright, the text in German, Uber Gewissheit, translated by Denis Paul and G. E. M. Anscombe, with an introduction by Arthur C. Danto, and twelve illustrations by Mel Bochner

San Francisco: Arion Press, 1991. Unpaginated throughout, the main text continuous by its propositional sequence (676 of these, numerals printed in blue). Bochner's line illustrations are rubricated. A fine copy of one of Hoyem's furthest flights of bindery, a huge (14.2x13 inch) squarish folio in openweave dreadnought-grey cloth, which is enclosed in matching slipcase with printed fabric label; copy 113 of 300 (of 326). The book is immaculate. Find two tiny dings to slipcase mouth and faintest hint of wear to slipcase head and tail, a great copy. Proposition 661: "How might I be mistaken in my assumption that I was never on the moon? 662: If I were to say 'I have never been on the moon--but I may be mistaken', that would be idiotic."
