        Automobiles Voisin 1919-1958.

London White Mouse Editions 1991 - First and limited numbered edition of only 2000 printed, (although 3500 were planned), this copy numbered 1671, landscape 4to., 312pp., numerous vintage photographic illustrations with French text, (together with a separate saddle-stitched English translation by Peter Hull also published in 1991, 64pp.), publisher's blue leatherette, the upper cover mounted with a stunning silver metal intaglio plaque, rubbing to head of spine, else fine, both books housed in original decorative slip-case, which is a little worn and chipped from protecting the superb content. The History of Avions Voisin - cars for the French President, Josephine Baker, Rudolph Valentino and H. G. Wells, dates from 1919 when Gabriel Voisin established his luxury car business, producing some of the most original and potent vehicles of the 1920s, cars designed for function and efficiency that eschewed all the conventional tricks of the stylist. The special merits of the Voisin design were amply demonstrated in the Touring Grand Prix of July 1922, in which Voisin cars came home first, second and third place. The Voisins of the 1930s, including the legendary straight-twelve, the engine of which encroached on the driving compartment in the interests of perfect weight distribution, were cloaked in coachwork whose bizarre appearance has perhaps been softened by the passage of time but were the subject of much controversy in their day, even in France (which was the home of eccentric bodywork at that period).

        My Sister - Life

[New York]: The Limited Editions Club (1991), 1991. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Kuper, Yuri. Elephant Folio - over 15 - 23" tall. 89 p. Limited edition of 250, this no. 65, SIGNED BY THE ARTIST. Boris Pasternak (1890-1960) is perhaps best known in the English-speaking world for his novel, Doctor Zhivago - it was smuggled out of the USSR and published in Milan in 1957, earning Pasternak the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1958. This work, My Sister, Life, was his first published collection of poems and is considered one of the most influential collections ever published in the Russian language. Controversial when it was first published, five years after the October Revolution of 1917, the revolutionary spirit pervades the poems - not in the political sense but in the spirit of beginning again. The artist, Yuri Kuper (b. 1940), has worked in several mediums. His work for My Sister-Life recalls the Russian Constructivists' radical, dynamic, geometric abstractions in his use of strong diagonals and primarily geometric forms. Kuper has exhibited at galleries in Europe and the United States, and his work forms part of the collections of the Museum of Modern Art (NYC), the Moscow Museum of Fine Arts, and the Fonds National d'Art Contemporain in Paris (N.B., above info from Wiki and the LEC newsletter).***DESCRIPTION: Half-bound with a grey Nigerian oasis goatskin spine and fore-edges, author's name in Cyrillic embossed in black on the spine, the boards covered in hand-made paper made by cutting Russian newspapers into minute pieces which were then incorporated with the rags and cotton pulp, with individual Cyrillic letters floated into the mixture in order to complete the process; fore- and bottom edges uncut, endpapers and text pages of the same hand-made paper as that covering the boards, six full-page, tissue-guarded etchings by Yuri Kuper bound in throughout the text; type Monotype Scotch Roman, handmade paper as referred to above, elephant folio size (approximately 19" tall), pagination: (i-iv), (1)-81, blank (82), colophon (83); limited edition of 250 copies, this no. 65, signed by the artist on the colophon page. Monthly newsletter loosely laid in. Publisher's slipcase covered in grey linen cloth, lined with light grey velveteen.***CONDITION: Fine, the leather spine and corners are smooth and supple, the colour of the spine deep and true (not sunned), the paper boards not rubbed; with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, perfectly straight corners with no rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings; two miniscule shallow scrapes to the fore-edge of the back board, else fine. The newsletter is also fine, with no folds, creases or edgewear. The slipcase is fine as well, strong and sturdy, the cloth covering without blemish.***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that due to the large size and weight of this volume, additional postage may apply; please contact us for details.***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         Wrenching Times, Poems from Drum-Taps by Walt Whitman (One of 30 in a deluxe binding)

(Powys): Gwasg Gregynog, 1991. Limited Edition. Leather. Fine. Schanilec, Gaylord. No. XIX of XXX (total edition 450) in a special binding, folio - over 12" to 15" tall, 72 pps. Walt Whitman (1819-1892) is perhaps best remembered today for his classic "Leaves of Grass"; often called "the father of free verse" his work was highly controversial in its day, as it was viewed as obscene and overtly sexual. However, as with all the writers who lived through the time of the Civil War, his thoughts on both the horror and honour of it came out in his poetry. In 1865, just as the war was ending, he published, at his own expense, a slim volume entitled "Drum-Taps"; in it he expressed "the pending action of this 'Time and Land we swim in', with all their large conflicting fluctuations of despair and hope, the shiftings, masses, and the whirl and deafening din, (yet overall, as by invisible hand, a definite purport and idea) - with the unprecedented anguish of wounded and suffering, the beautiful young men, in whole-sale death and agony, everything sometimes as if in blood color, and dripping blood. The book is therefore unprecedentedly sad - but it also has the blast of the trumpet, and the drum pounds and whirrs in it, and then an undertone of sweetest comradeship and human love, threading its steady thread inside the chaos, and heard at every lull and interstice thereof - truly also it has clear notes of faith and triumph". Isaac Roseberg (1890-1918), author of some of the most outstanding poetry of WWI (as a soldier in which he met his death), wrote to a friend that "when I think of [Walt Whitman's] "Drum-Taps" mine are absurd". As M. Wynn Thomas states in this book's Introduction, "Isaac Rosenberg's words provide most moving testimony that Whitman's Civil War collection had passed, with flying colors, the severest of tests - the test of being sceptically examined from the murderously muddy trenches of the First World War". Introduction by M. Wynn Thomas, Senior Lecturer in English at University College, Swansea, one of the world's leading Whitman scholars. ***ABOUT THE ARTIST: Gaylord Schanilec (b. 1955), artist, writer, letterpress printer, designer and illustrator, has set the standard for contemporary artist's books over the last 30 years. The proprietor of the press Midnight Paper Sales, he uses traditional wood engraving processes (as he explains, "the winters in Wisconsin are long") to create exquisite, highly detailed wood engravings. A recent work "Mayflies of the Driftless Region" won a Judges Choice Award at the 2005 Oxford Fine Press Bookfair. ***DESCRIPTION: This copy one of the 30 copies bound in a deluxe binding of full leather, the cream streaked with blue, an abstract mountainside beneath on mulitiple hues of morocco onlays, doublures of grey suede, pale green free endpapers, title page in red and black, nine color wood engravings by Gaylord Schanilec (the frontispiece, seven full-page, a smaller engraving on the colophon page) who made the engravings during a six-month residence with Gwasg Gregynog, all the illustrations printed from the origional wood-blocks; type Monotype Baskerville, on Zerkall mould-made paper, folio size (approximately 14.75" tall), pagination: (1)-71, colophon (72); limited edition of 450 copies total, this being no. XIX of XXX in the special binding. Enclosed in a drop-back box covered with navy blue cloth and lined with grey felt, title in gilt on spine. ***CONDITION: Volume fine; the leather of the binding smooth and supple, the hinges and text block strong, the interior pristine and entirely free of prior owner markings; there are a few stray light marks on the binding, we believe a natural variation of the leather. The box is also fine, strong, sturdy and clean. ***POSTAGE: International customers please note that additional postage may apply, please inquire for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         Gwasg Gregynog: A Descriptive Catalogue of printing at Gregynog 1978-1990

Gwasg Gregynog 1991 - 31x21cm, 74pp. With forty-one illustrations in various colours taken from Gwasg Gregynog publications, and multiple tipped-in specimens. Copy XVII of XXV (900) in a designer binding by Alan Wood of full white (backstrip) and black (boards) goatskin, rules blocked in white to front and back boards surrounding rectangular cut-outs, revealing collages of fragments of Press material mounted under panels of transparent vellum, title blocked in black to backstrip, t.e.g., matching white ruling to pastedowns, in a felt-lined drop-back box of black cloth over boards with black leather title-panel to the spine, blocked in white. Gwasg Gregynog's Descriptive Catalogue is an elegant and most generous production, well known for representing outstanding value for money in its standard edition of 755 copies in card covers. Here the book appears on a completely transformed level - a fine example of the special binding of just 25 copies in the Press tradition of very limited-edition luxury designer bindings, always scarce on the market (there was also a more commonly-seen quarter-leather limitation of 100 copies). Anthony Dowd (The Special Bindings of Gwasg Gregynog, Gwasg Gregynog 2004) records that the special bindings were originally going to be produced by John Pearson of Designer Bookbinders, but he was unable to carry out the commission and Alan Wood, who had just joined the Press as full-time binder (in the tradition of George Fisher before the war) designed and executed the binding himself. He went on to design one, and execute eight, further special bindings for the Press. The Catalogue is an essential reference for understanding the modern revival of the Press and its achievements - although the continuing absence of a second volume covering the post-1990 years is keenly felt. Fine (in fact Mint) in a Fine drop-back box. Dowd 'J' [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
