A collection of twelve of the best of Bierce's Civil War stories, originally published in 1892. "In these stories, Bierce lays at our feet the wounded and the dying like no writer before him, and few since. But he does so in a context of compassion for suffering. He rages at the vanities and waste of war. But as he does, he is also exhilarated by it and is unashamed of his emotion. Were he to offer us unrelieved bloodshed, or unalloyed patriotism, we would not be reading him today" (Yolla Bolly Press). Group of four letters to historian and biographer, John Lukacs: TLS, 2 ALsS, ANS

Original manuscripts. Very Good. (1) TLS, 1-1/2pp, single-spaced, quarto, from 1170 Fifth Avenue, New York, November 7, 1991. In part: "....Your DUEL is a stunning piece of scholarship....You have done a masterpiece of historical writing. Only someone who has toiled to compose a book can perceive the art with which this extraordinary narrative is shaped....The scope, too, is remarkable....One could extract your judgments, characterizations, estimates, and conclusions and make a small book of aphorisms....Present-day Americans do not understand any politics but their own....On the point of Roosevelt's long uncertainty, I happen to have some information you could not know, because it has not yet been published. In 1941 FDR used Rene de Chambrun as propagandist....Yours with admiration and affection, Jacques." (2) ALS, 1p, octavo, in blue ink, from his Fifth Avenue address, Nov 12 /94. "....This autumn has been a series of ailments....It was good to know that you've finished your extraordinary book. Your rate of production is really splendid, and the quality of the product certainly deserves the recognition that was expressed in the Pennsylvania History Magazine. Doesn't this latest work of yours qualify for the you-know-what prize?...Affectionate regards, Jacques." (3) ALS, 1p, 12mo, in blue ink, Nov 12/95. "The letters are very good indeed. Coming from academics in a hoity-toity university, they are a tribute to your art & scholarship....I hope you can use the approving words to get a publisher....Mississippi is not at all a bad Press....My health & energy are returning slowly....All the best, Jacques." (4) ANS, 1/2p, handwritten note on an engraved announcement, from San Antonio, Mar. 9, 2007. "...Thank you for your fine book about G.K. [George Kennan]. It does him full justice. He was a good & great man. Trust you are well. Ever, Jacques." [This note is especially poignant in that it is handwritten on an announcement titled "Jacques Barzun to his Friends," telling them that a "lack of finger control" prevents him from answering their letters.] Barzun, recently deceased, was a French-born American historian of culture and ideas, winner of America's Presidential Medal of Freedom, and knight of the French Legion of Honor. Along with his friends and correspondent John Lukacs, Barzun helped establish the modern discipline of cultural history.

Fine/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 1 pages. Rare Charlie Watts collectible item. Gallery-Framed Vintage Photographic Print. A framed and authenticated copy of Jill Furmanovsky's "Charlie Watts, Halcyon Hotel, March 1991". Limited Edition of 30 numbered, stamped, and signed copies of the beautifully toned silver-gelatin print. As such, it is one of the smallest limitations of a vintage print ever produced. A magnificent production by Jill Furmanovsky: Oversize format. Museum-quality fiber-print, printed directly from the original negative. The tones are so rich and warm that they must be seen to be believed. Full framed size is 22 X 27 inches. Numbered, stamped, and signed by the photographer. Presents the single most celebrated photograph by Jill Furmanovsky, possibly the most celebrated photographer who specializes in portraits of rock music celebrities. The classic profile of a pensive, serene-looking Charlie Watts is surely one of the greatest portraits ever taken of a rock star, particularly one associated with the most Dionysian version of popular music. "I entered the London Observer's Portrait Award with this picture and won First Prize in 1992. To my great delight, Charlie wrote to congratulate me. Representing the bedrock of rock, Charlie Watts has aged immaculately" (Jill Furmanovsky) . Artists photographed in her 30-year career include many of the biggest names in rock music: Pink Floyd, Bob Marley, Eric Clapton, Blondie, The Police, Led Zeppelin, The Pretenders, Bob Dylan, and Oasis. She has also made music videos for Oasis and The Pretenders. Furmanovsky's books, "The Moment: 25 Years of Rock Photography" and "Was There Then: A Photographic Journey" are seminal works in the genre. An absolute "must-have" title for Charlie Watts, The Rolling Stones, and rock music collectors. This original silver-gelatin print is Number 15, and it is very prominently and beautifully numbered and signed in black ink-pen and stamped on recto by Jill Furmanovsky. This print is now sold out and highly collectible. As far as we know, this is one of only two such copies still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. The only other copy is available from RockArchive London for 6, 000 pounds (roughly, $9, 500) . As one of the most serious and respected dealers in rock music memorabilia, they are not kidding. Don't take our word for it, look them up online. This is a reasonably-priced copy of exactly the same classic. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of The Jane Brown Observer Portrait Award for this Charlie Watts portrait in 1992 and "Woman of the Year for Music" in 1998. One of the finest living photographers. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO "ROD STEWART" FRAMED GALLERY PRINT IN OUR CATALOG).

“The Predictability of Hydrodynamic Flow, in Transactions of The New York Academy of Sciences, 25, 4, November to June, 1963. pp. 409-432

Scarce first edition, first appearance of a revolutionary paper by Edward Lorenz, an MIT meteorologist whose meticulous attempt to predict the weather through an early computer unraveled into a spectacular “failure” that he turned into the chaos theory. “Lorenz made his boldest scientific achievement in discovering ‘deterministic chaos,’ a principle which has profoundly influenced a wide range of basic sciences and brought about one of the most dramatic changes in mankind's view of nature since Sir Isaac Newton” (Speech awarding Lorenz the 1991 Kyoto Prize Award). Lorenz’s development of the chaos theory is by any measure considered a seminal moment in 20th century science. “The main catalyst for the development of chaos theory was the electronic computer. Much of the mathematics of chaos theory involves the repeated iteration of simple mathematical formulas, which would be impractical to do by hand. Electronic computers made these repeated calculations practical, while figures and images made it possible to visualize these systems” (Wikipedia). In 1961, Lorenz was using a Royal McBee LGP-30, a simple digital computer, to run a numerical computer model to re-anaylize a weather prediction, when, as a shortcut on a number in the sequence, he entered the decimal .506 instead of entering the full .506127 the computer would hold. The result was a completely different weather scenario. To Lorenz’s “surprise the weather that the machine began to predict was completely different from the weather calculated before. Lorenz tracked this down to the computer printout. The computer worked with 6-digit precision, but the printout rounded variables off to a 3-digit number, so a value like 0.506127 was printed as 0.506. This difference is tiny and the consensus at the time would have been that it should have had practically no effect. However Lorenz had discovered that small changes in initial conditions produced large changes in the long-term outcome” (ibid). Lorenz published his findings in this 1963 paper for the New York Academy of Sciences. In it, he noted: "One meteorologist remarked that if the theory were correct, one flap of a seagull’s wings could change the course of weather forever." (Lorenz first used the term ‘butterfly’ in a speech delivered in 1972, but that speech was not published until it appeared as an appendix in his 1993 volume The Essence of Chaos). Lorenz was the first to recognize what is now called chaotic behavior in the mathematical modeling of weather systems. What he realized was that small differences in a dynamic system such as the atmosphere–or a model of the atmosphere–could trigger vast and often unsuspected results; that large events have incalculably small origins that grow in complex chain reactions. Today, “chaos theory studies the behavior of dynamical systems that are highly sensitive to initial conditions… rounding errors in numerical computation) yield widely diverging outcomes for chaotic systems, rendering long-term prediction impossible in general. This happens even though these systems are deterministic, meaning that their future behavior is fully determined by their initial conditions, with no random elements involved. In other words, the deterministic nature of these systems does not make them predictable. This behavior is known as deterministic chaos, or simply chaos” (ibid).& Chaos theory is applied in many scientific disciplines, among them: mathematics, computer science, economics, geology, microbiology, biology, engineering, finance, psychology, meteorology, philosophy, politics, physics, population dynamics, and robotics. CONDITION & DETAILS: Small quarto. (9.5 x 6.25 inches; 236 x 156mm). BINDING: Original paper wraps with very slight remnants of creases at the upper and lower fore-edges (see scan). Very good condition. INTERIOR: Near fine condition throughout. RARITY: Exceptionally scarce due to the paper’s publication in a small journal with a small print run. & & & &

        The Way We Live Now

London: Karsten Schubert, [colophon: 1991]. 6 coloured aquatints, with added tempera, by Howard Hodgkin (2 folding, 4 double-page). Original paper-covered boards, original blue paper chemise with orange tempera added by hand, protective tissue covering to binding, original publishers cardboard slip-case with printed title label on upper cover. A fine copy of a work which featured in Riva Castleman's survey of the best 'livre'd'artiste' of the last century, and John Updike included Sontag's story in his 'Best American Short Stories of the Twentieth Century'. "This is a special work of art, a unique collaboration between two great artists in response to the AIDS crisis" (Castleman p.198). Castleman's description of Howard Hodgkin's etched aquatints as "lushly colored" is satisfyingly accurate: the project was evidently close to the artist's heart (he spent four years working on the images) and he clearly wanted to create a worthy visual accompaniment to this short story by Susan Sontag. The addition of tempera by hand ensures that each plate is unique, but Hodgkin's intention with the series was to illuminate both the emotional changes and, at a cellular level, the physical changes bought about by the disease. The overall result "achieves an optimistic effect, which strongly repudiates the horror and fear." (Castleman). Sonntag's short story, perhaps the greatest ever written on the subject, offers an honest and deeply-felt account of an AIDS sufferer, and human strength in the face of inevitable loss. The edition was limited to just 243 copies, numbered and signed by both the author and the artist, this copy is number 116 of 200 copies. "All proceeds from the sale of ...[the] book ... [were] given to AIDS charities in the United Kingdom and the United States". "The book is designed by Gordon House ... The pictures and end papers are original etchings by Howard Hodgkin. The etchings are printed in intaglio ... and hand painted in Sennelier tempera by Jack Shirreff ... The cover is hand painted in tempera ... the bookbinding is done by Dieter Schulke" (printed note at end). Castleman, A Century of Artists Books p.198.

[Np: Columbia Pictures / Parkway Productions], 7 June - 29 August 1991.. [4],123 leaves, expanded by lettered inserts. Quarto. Photomechanically reproduced typescript, printed on rectos only of white and eight other colored stocks. Bradbound. Last several leaves show tidemarks along lower margins and gutters, with a trace of faint rippling (but no staining) continuing on into a few more leaves, two ink names (see below), else very good. A heavily revised "Final Shooting Script," with eight stages of substantial dated revises beyond that draft (i.e. a "rainbow" script). Ganze and Mandel's adaptation to the screen of a story by Kim Wilson and Kelly Candaele based on the experiences some of the players in the All- American Girls Baseball League during the years of WWII. Penny Marshall directed the highly successful film with an ensemble cast that included Tom Hanks, Gena Davis, Madonna, Rosie O'Donnell, David Strathaim, Tracy Reiner, Kelli Simpkins, and many others. This script bears the ownership signature of Les Lazarowitz, the production sound mixer, as well as his name in block print (a designation as part of script distribution, perhaps) and a few relevant annotations in the text. The script is accompanied by a black leather covered baseball, signed in gold ink by a number of cast and production members, including Tom Hanks, Madonna, Gena Davis, Penny Marshall, Rosie O'Donnell, Robin Knight, Tracy Reiner, Janet Jones Gretzky, Pepper Pairie (one of the original league players) and Neezer Tarleton. The baseball is attended by a handwritten and signed attestation by Les Lazarowitz about his obtaining the signatures during the film's production.

        Flore Danoise

Paris: Robert & Lydie Dutrou, 1991. Folio. (15 3/8 x 10 1/2 inches). Half- title and title in red, Text in French and Danish, printed in black with headings in red and black. 7 coloured plates by Alechinsky, each an "eau- forte originale sur facsimile de Flora Danica," each numbered and signed in pencil by Alechinsky. Unbound as issued in original limp paper wrappers, the upper cover with etched calligraphic decorated title printed in red and silver, plexiglass slipcase. Fine copy: the edition limited to 165 copies signed by the author, this copy number 7 of the 125 copies for sale by the publishers. An approximate translation of the colophon: "Flore Danoiose, a poem by Michel Sicard - dedicated to his daughter Flora - and the Danish translation by Uffee Harder are both set by hand in 20 point Garamond type. The seven original etchings by Pierre Alechinsky are printed on facsimiles of plates from the 18th-century botanical work: Flora Danica." The excellent images - reminiscent of the work of Max Ernst - provide a fresh view of some of the more esoteric images from Flora Danica. The literary/artistic equivalent of cloud-imagined figures and landscapes, Alechinsky offers a sophisticated view which complements Sicard's text/poems to his daughter.
