[London]: GraftonBooks A Division of HarperCollinsPublishers,. [1991]. boards.. A fine copy in fine dust jacket. (#138840). First edition. Signed inscription by Baxter to "Frank" on the title page. The author's well-received first book. "... RAFT features some of the most startling hard SF content in recent years. It is the first volume in the author's loosely connected Xeelee future history." - Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II- 84. "Humans are stranded on a 'raft' in a pocket universe of enormous gravity. Baxter's debut novel, in which he describes his young hero's quest through a world that is strange indeed. As an all-too-rare example of British SF rooted in speculative physics, it has drawn praise from Larry Niven, Bob Shaw and others." - Pringle, The Ultimate Guide to Science Fiction, second edition (1995), p. [296]. "It is very, very hard SF, and it's great fun, and the cosmogonic precepts of its universe are challenging to grasp, and it's quite quickly told, and it's really dumb about people." - John Clute. Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-84.

(KRUGER, BARBARA) (COOPER, DENNIS). Cooper, Dennis & Barbara Kruger. FRISK: A NOVEL - SIGNED BY DENNIS COOPER WITH A UNIQUE ORIGINAL ARTWORK BY BARBARA KRUGER. New York: Grove Weidenfed & Grove Press, 1991. First Edition. 8vo. Boards in Illustrated Jacket. Artist's Book. Near Fine/Fine. 128pp, no illustrations. Published in 1991, "Frisk" is acclaimed writer Dennis Cooper's third novel - a graphically sexual and violent first-person narrative of a gay serial killer. To raise money towards the 1995 independently produced film based on the book, the author asked thirty artists (including Mike Kelley) to each "alter a copy of the novel in whatever way they wished". These artworks were then sold at a special fund-raising auction. This example was contributed by Barbara Kruger - one of the most influential American artists of the last three decades. For it she cut up and collaged a color photocopy of the book's dust jacket to the rear flyleaves, and rubber-stamped her name in crimson ink in her iconic Futura Bold Italic typeface fourteen times on the verso of the rear free endpaper. This example was acquired directly from Dennis Cooper who has BOLDLY SIGNED the title page in black ink, and provided a handwritten letter noting the details of its creation. A most handsome copy in dust jacket of this unique altered book cum Barbara Kruger artwork showing a bit of fugitive glue, soiling and ink to the endpapers as a result of its transformation.         Visitor From The Underground - Limited Edition Print (Signed)

1991. Print. New. Lithograph print by Carl Barks on Acid-free Paper. SIGNED NUMBERED PRINT. Size: 10" x 8" (254mm x 203mm). Visitor From Underground was Another Rainbow's first Carl Barks money bin lithograph -- large-size or miniature -- in eight years when it was released in 1991. It was an instant success and quickly sold out. It was also the only miniature money bin litho. In The Fine Art of Walt Disney's Donald Duck by Carl Barks, a slip-cased coffee table book, Barks historian Barbara Boatner wrote the following text about Carl's painting and what was happening in a Visitor From Underground: "Worse than the Beagle Boys are little varmints that nibble thousand-dollar bills or squirrel away round, shiny objects … but Scrooge's helpers are too tired from a long day in the south forty to even notice an intruder. "In the centre of the painting is one of Scrooge's many lanterns, which, Barks explains, the old miser used ‘because he owned all those oil wells. He wouldn't pay an electric bill when he could light his money with some very cheap kerosene that he already owned … unless, of course, he owned the electric company, too.' The money bin scenes, Barks continues, are popular in part ‘because they give people the feeling of looking right into the source of all the wealth in the world.' For the ducks who have to till Scrooge's fields, though, the three cubic acres of cash act mainly as a mild soporific. "In the fall of 1973, shortly after the sale of this painting, its current (and present) owner gathered with the Barks and several others at the nearby home of a friend. Late in the evening Carl got the collector off to the side and confided -- with a twinkle in his eye -- that ‘Visitor From Underground' isn't the real name of that painting. I just put that title on there because I had to call it something. Its real name is, When the **** Hit the Fan.' Obviously, a story for posterity. Visitor From Underground and text about the painting are printed as a double-page spread in the Fine Art Book (plate 41, pages 150-151, chronological number 51, Barks' 12th oil painting from 1973). Visitor From Underground was printed in continuous tone by the Black Box of Chicago and is a limited signed edition of 595.

Reprint of the 1858 edition published in München. An unsurpassed reference work of permanent value, to identify artists who sign themselves only by their monogram or similar device. Literally thousands of them were book illustrators, hence the work's importance for books. Nagler begins by giving an exact facsimile of the monogram(s); this is followed by the artist's name, his biography, and then a list of his works, frequently including a complete bibliography of books illustrated by him. Arrangement is alphabetical. The total number of main entries is 14,961; the number of monogram facsimiles must be well over 30,000.
