CONDITION: Near Fine (some light toning at the extremities; moderate surface wear, else Fine). From the publisher: "We grasp the considerably wide connotation of the word 'Hysteric,' and the emotions usually associated with hysteria. However, looking at it in a different light, we can begin to feel the energy in the word 'Hysteric.' The image which comes to mind is that of high tension and taut nerves, and can never be seen as apathetic. Hereafter, we want to make a series of these books with people who firmly believe they have the energy to elevate the feeling of 'Hysteric.' Before long, the concept of 'Hysteric' might be changed." Printed on thick coated stock paper in the United States to the very highest standards. In pictorial DJ with black titles on the cover and spine, as issued. The book is aptly titled as the passage of time, place, unique cultures, and beautiful men and women have been Irving Penn's (and photography's) greatest subject. The portrait of two shabbily dressed American-Indian children shyly posing for the camera, their hands resting on an ornate European colonial-period table, is classic Irving Penn, a testament to his greatness and humane-ness as a photographer. It is everything the 20th century is about in one simple yet stunning image: Colonialism and culture, The Old and The New, Rich and Poor, North and South, East and West. Irving Penn died on October 7, 2009 at the age of 92, his place in photographic history permanent and secure. A heartbreakingly beautiful book, this is an absolute "must-have" title for Irving Penn collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed and dated (in the year of publication) in black pen on the half-title page by the photographer: "Irving Penn 1991". Penn encircled his signature for emphasis. This title is a great photography classic. This is one of very few such signed and dated copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Beware: Many copies available online are subsequent printings or have serious flaws yet are priced as though they had collectible value. A rare signed copy thus. 470 plates. Irving Penn's "Moments Preserved" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. BIRDS OF AUSTRALIA (VOL. 3) (AUTHENTIC FACSIMILE EDITION) Robins, Wrens, Finches

Hill House. New;. 1991. Hardcover. 0947352147 . 97 Plates. BRAND NEW! This is not a mere reproduction. This is an exact facsimile of an original held in the Libraries of the British Museum (Natural History) in London and Tring. It is not a reproduction, because no camera was used in transferring the images from the originals. The paper used is 130 gsm mat art paper. This facsimile carries faithfully every spot, mark or stain as the original. It also carries the original Museum Department of Zoology stamps, and librarian's annotations. The color printing is so accurate that, from behind glass, the naked eye would be unable to distinguish the original from the facsimile. This facsimile is exactly the same size as the original (Imperial Folio: 22" x 15"). It is cased-in and bound between 4 mm. The boards are covered in special Japanese Saifu cloth, gold stamped on the spine, and with the gold Crown Cipher of the British Museum (Natural History) on the front, and blind embossed on the inner margin of the front boards. The end-papers are of special wood-free heavy grade paper, printed in a generated repetitive pattern of the Museum's Library stamps. The publisher has not intruded into the authenticity of the book, leaving the publication data printed only on the very last page at the end of the book block. This book is individually numbered on the inside front board, hand wrapped in protective brown paper, and placed in its own crush-proof outer carton. The carton is then sealed, numbered and signed on the outside by the printer's quality control officer. ; Vol. 3 .

        Collected Ukiyo-e 1: Harunobu [Meihin Soroemono Ukiyo-e 1: Harunobu]

Gyousei, [Tokyo] 1991 - [Tokyo]: Gyousei, 1991. First edition. Sumptuous exhibition of numerous Harunobu Suzuki ukiyo-e prints, in color, and others in black and white, with text in Japanese. Folio, 14 1/2" x 10 1/2"; olive cloth; glossy pictorial jacket, slipcase. Book, jacket and slipcase all in fine, as new condition. An extraordinarily scarce and beautiful reference on master ukiyo-e printmaker Harunobu Suzuki (about 1724/25 to 1770), assembled and described by three of the world's most learned authorities on the subject: Muneshige Narazaki, Juzo Suzuki, and Tadashi Kobayashi. Clearly designed as a collectible form, this Gyousei offering was printed for only a short time, only in Japan, and only in Japanese. 98 Harunobu prints are reproduced full-color, full-page, and full sized; the unusual dimensions chosen for these oversized pages allowed reproduction of the prints at their actual size. That dazzling display is accompanied by critical commentary in Japanese and many more prints and illustrations in black and white. This volume is part of a series by this trio of experts, who combed the museums of Japan and the world to find the best preserved examples of the best work of each of the master ukiyo-e masters. Hard to imagine an better-preserved example of this beautifully constructed art reference collectible than this one; even the slip-case, which by its nature generally absorbs something of a beating, has only the minutest flaws. The book, jacket and contents are flawless. L49 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

THE WHITE CASTLE - Rare Signed Copy of The First American Edition/First Printing

New York City, NY: George Braziller, 1991 - 1st Printing. Signed. 161 pages. Published in 1991. The author's first novel to be translated into English. One of the most spectacular literary debuts of the last decade of the 20th century. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a very small and limited print run as a hardcover original only. It is the author's single most scarce title. "In the 17th century, a young Italian scholar sailing from Venice to Naples is taken prisoner and delivered to Constantinople. There he falls into the custody of a scholar known as Hoja ('Master'), a man who is his exact double. In the years that follow, the Slave instructs his Master on Western science and technology, from medicine to pyrotechnics. But Hoja wants to know more: Why he and his captive are the persons they are and whether, given knowledge of each other's most intimate secrets, they could actually exchange identities. A colorful and intricately patterned triumph of the imagination" (Publisher's blurb). Pamuk's books are censored and often banned outright in his native Turkey, a culture that has to strike a delicate balance between (Eastern) Islam and (Western) secularism. The threat to one's freedom makes writing even more urgent and turns talented writers into great ones. His most passionate critic/admirer in America, the late great novelist John Updike, chose "Snow" as the best novel of the year 2004, bar none. An absolute "must-have" title for Orhan Pamuk collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Orhan Pamuk. This title is a great book. This is one of very few signed copies of the First American Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Copies available online command as much as $3000. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award in 2003 for "My Name Is Red". Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2006, the first Turkish writer to be so deservedly honored. One of the greatest living writers. A fine collectible copy. --- Literatur: u.a. - Dieter Tucholke 1965-1995. Grafiken, vermalte Collagen, Objekte. A humanist, he was a part of the transition between transcendentalism and realism, incorporating both views in his works. Whitman is among the most influential poets in the American canon, often called the father of free verse.[1] His work was very controversial in its time, particularly his poetry collection Leaves of Grass, which was described as obscene for its overt sexuality.
