This work was a collaborative effort created to raise money for the AIDS Crisis Trust. Spender invited several British and American writers to contribute with texts that could accompany Hockney's specially drawn alphabet. The written contributions are by Douglas Adams, Martin Amis, Julian Barnes, William Boyd, Margaret Drabble, Patrick Leigh Fermor, William Golding, Seamus Heaney, David Hockney, Kazuo Ishiguro, Erica Jong, Doris Lessing, Norman Mailer, Ian McEwan, Arthur Miller, Iris Murdoch, Nigel Nicolson, John Julius Norwich, Joyce Carol Oates, V. S. Pritchett, Craig Raine, Susan Sontag, Stephen Spender, John Updike, Anthony Burgess, Ted Hughes, Paul Theroux, Gore Vidal, and T. S. Eliot. An Egyptian-born American composer, performer, ethnomusicologist, and educator, El-Dabh came to the United States in 1950, becoming a part of the New York music scene that included Cage, Varèse, and Hovhaness. He went on to study composition with Krenek, Copland, Dallapiccola, and others. "El-Dabh's compositional style is influenced by Egyptian folk and traditional music. Frequently monodic, his works feature complex rhythms and much use of percussion. His career was launched in 1949 with a highly acclaimed performance of It is Dark and Damp on the Front (1948) at All Saints Cathedral, Cairo. In 1950 he made his début as a solo drummer, under the direction of Stokowski, in the first performance of Tahmeela. Other works include Clytemnestra (1958), One More Gaudy Night (1961), A Look at Lightning (1962) and Lucifer (1975), commissioned by Martha Graham; Sound and Light of the Pyramids of Giza (1960), written for the Cultural Ministry of the Egyptian Government and performed daily at the pyramids; and New Pharaoh's Suite, written for the Cleveland Museum of Art to accompany a visiting Ethiopian exhibit from the Louvre (1996).       Dawson's Book Shop, Los Angeles 1991 - 21pp. One of 60 copies of this miniature leaf book printed by Pall Bohne for Dawson's Book Shop. With an engraved, illustrated leaf from an extremely rare miniature two-volume picture-Bible, printed in The Hague by Daniel Langeweg, circa 1750. The original leaf contains a full-page wood engraving executed by Jan Besoet from the Book of Zechariah, chapter IV, verse 2, which depicts Zechariah's vision of a golden candlestick upon which a bowl, seven lamps, and seven pipes sat, with an olive tree on either side. The text of the book includes a brief essay by Ruth Adomeit on the history of this bible. Pall Bohne has added a note explaining how he made the endpapers using a technique called "Dutch Gilt," which is contemporary with Langeweg's "Bybel."       Alecto Historical Editions, London 1991 - 765 x 620 mm. (30 1/8 x 24 1/2"). No. 23 OF 125 COPIES. Loose as issued in five buckram folders inside a cloth solander box, paper labels. WITH 81 HAND-FINISHED COLOR PLATES, heightened with gum arabic. One corner of the (heavy) box very expertly repaired, two-inch closed internal tear to title sheet seamlessly mended, other very minor signs of use to the box, but the portfolios and their plates as new, even the tissues guards in pristine condition. Printed using the original engraved plates for "Travels in the Interior of North America in the Years 1832-34," this is a splendidly produced facsimile of a monumental work on the American West that offers a very attractive alternative to the prohibitively expensive original. Swiss artist Karl Bodmer (1809-93) was working as a landscape illustrator when he was hired by the Prussian naturalist Prince Maximilian of Wied for an expedition to examine and describe the wildlife and Indian tribes of the American West. The men travelled up the Missouri River from Saint Louis to Montana over a 13-month period, and Bodmer documented the landscape and people of the region in great detail. In the words of the website of the National Agricultural Library, "although Maximilian and Bodmer were not the first to explore the American West and record their observations, they were the first team combining a trained, dedicated scientist with an especially skilled illustrator, whose collaboration resulted in a work of unique historical, scientific, and aesthetic importance." According to ANB, "for over a century Bodmer's aquatints have been regarded as one of the most significant contributions to the iconography of the western frontier." In his portraits of American Indians, Bodmer "achieved a level of accuracy and sensitivity that no other artist of the American frontier has ever surpassed. His work is particularly valuable for its detailed rendition of the Indians' ornamentation, attire, and implements. Indeed, Bodmer was far superior to his better-known contemporary George Catlin, whose work lacks the Swiss artist's fidelity and meticulous attention to detail." In addition to depictions of native Americans, the "Travels" (the work was also produced in German and French) contains a number of memorable images of flora and fauna, terrain, frontiersmen, steamboats, and more. After the printing of the original editions, the location of the plates remained unknown until their rediscovery at Castle Wied in the 1950s; they eventually ended up being donated to the Omaha Joslyn Art Museum, which then collaborated with Alecto Historical Editions in London on the present spectacular reproduction. In an effort to achieve thoroughgoing authenticity, the work on our illustrations was done using the 19th century poupée printing technique, a laborious and exacting method involving the application by hand of multiple colors on the same plate. Copies of the original editions--which seldom appear in appealing condition--are now extravagantly expensive, costing hundreds of thousands of dollars. And copies of the present facsimile simply do not appear (this is the only copy we could trace that was not sold directly to institutions at the time of production). The original price of the present facsimile in 1991 was $85,000. EACH PAPER IS SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. The 1990 prize was awarded to Jerome I. Friedman, Henry W. Kendall, both of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Richard E. Taylor, of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), "for their pioneering investigations concerning deep inelastic scattering of electrons on protons and bound neutrons, which have been of essential importance for the development of the quark model in particle physics" (Nobel Prize Committee). Asterisks notate when he has intercourse with one of them. More often he notes, "no sex" for one or another reason. The set of 15 monthly calendars, filled with tiny writing, encompass the years 1971-1976, 1981, and 1983-1991.

The leaf is from a copy of Volume I of the Sweynheym and Pannartz first edition of Nicholas of Lyra's Postilla super totam bibliam, completed on 18 November 1471 in the Palazzo Massimo in Rome-only 239 of 452 leaves of that copy remain. The leaf bears a two-line rubricated initial on the recto. Sweynheim and Pannartz, the earliest printers outside Germany, worked at Subiaco and Rome, making Humanist and classical texts available to a wider audience. Since their press runs were normally only 275 copies, their editions are now seldom seen and costly. This is a rare opportunity to study an example of their type, first used in 1467 and now recognized as the first truly Roman font. Each chapter of the accompanying book begins with a 9-line initial in blue ink. Book bound in quarter-morocco with marbled paper over boards. Note from publisher laid in. This original silver-gelatin print is Number 15, and it is very prominently and beautifully numbered and signed in black ink-pen and stamped on recto by Jill Furmanovsky. This is a great photographic print. As far as we know, this is one of only two such copies still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: The only other copy available online is from RockArchive London for 6000 British Pounds/GP (between 7500 and 8000 US Dollars, depending on the day, post-Brexit). As one of the most serious and respected dealers in rock music memorabilia, they are not kidding. Don't take our word for it, look them up online. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of The Jane Brown Observer Portrait Award for this Charlie Watts portrait in 1992 and "Woman of the Year for Music" in 1998.         Song of the Bear

      Palo Alto, CA 1991 - Artist's book, unique, poem on handmade paper and Cibachrome photograph, presented format of Russian icon in maple and ebony hinged box, signed by the author / artist on the back panel in black and dated. Size of box: 16 x 12-3/4 inches; opening to 15-1/4 x 11-1/2 inches; text on handmade ivory paper with strands of black fiber (referencing the pelt of the bear) by David Kimbell of Magnolia Editions. The box is by Chris Daubert with maple for the backdrop of the poem and ebony for the backdrop of the Cibachrome print. Walter Sparks selected and laid out the text which was set by Mackenzie & Harris and letterpress printed by Alan Hillesheim at Digger Pine Press. From the large deckle on the text page, to the black ebony setting off the Cibachrome print, this is an exceedingly beautiful and well-thought out work. The artist / author states that the "prose poem is a reverie - a fusion of a dream, an encounter in the wild with a bear, and a celebration of the feminine spirit. The imagery in the Cibachrome photograph, which I printed, features a fragment of a pelt killed by a hunter with a bow and arrow, the backbone of an Alaskan brown bear found in an Indian mound that pre-dates gun powder, and an obsidian arrowhead." Whether displayed or quietly contemplated holding as book, this is an intriguing art work, capturing a moment of the past eminently recognizable today. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
